The knock on the door was a playful shave and a haircut with America calling out, "Taym you ready? Loser has to get me lunch!"

Get me lunch. She was learning, at least.
"Right," he said dryly as he opened the door, shrugging into his coat and tucking his scarf up around his neck in his usual futile attempt to hide how thin and ropey it was. He was a picture of glum resignation: he needed to do this, and America was one of the few people with both the force of will and the desire to force him to do it.
"I hate you," he told her, with a face like a kicked dog's.
America smiled as Taym came along sulking but didn't put up a fight. He was learning, at least.
"What was that, Obadiah? Thank you for accompanying me, America." Her voice went just a bit lower, gaining a nasal quality. "I appreciate your continuing magnificence, please do guard my body from the artistic deprivations of bored Life techs. By the way, that is a mighty fetching dress, it makes your posterior look even more delightful than usual, which is truly a surprise as it is general knowledge that your everything already excedes expectation."
Switching back she nodded solemnly to Taym, "I would call you a flatterer, Mister Thompson, but we both know its not flattery when it's true."
Unless interrupted soon, Taym was in distinct danger of spending the entire walk over listening to America flirt with herself for him. Something about her was almost aggressively on today.

He'd endured the little skit by packing a box of cigarettes against his palm, and he opened it (take one out, turn it upside down, put it back) and lit one before he answered.
"I would never use the word fetching," he informed her, turning his head politely away to exhale, his voice still flat and miserable. He was as off as she was on. "I also wouldn't bother telling you you look like a million bucks on any given day, because you always do, and anyway you're fully ******** aware of it. Impeccable impersonation otherwise, though. What was the door thing about?"
"Now that is a shame. Next you'll be saying that fetch'll never happen," she sighed dramatically and batted her eyes at him, before turning her attention back to their path. "I need to get an actual door on my room, that man I'm supposed to go easy on? Has decided it's perfectly okay to go down to the basement and watch me sleep." She rolled her eyes heavenward, "Probably getting courtship tips from Chantelle, who by the by, is cheating on poor Jerry with him."
She slid Taym a small, sideways smile as she offered the gossip.

He didn't return it. He did not, in fact, look interested in the gossip at all.
"You want me to say something to him?" he asked after a long pause. "Lawrence, not Jerry about his ******** relationship problems." The idea of Jerry having a relationship to begin with was baffling and not a little bit infuriating. His voice was the careful kind of level that suggested a great deal of anger was being tightly restrained behind it.
"You think he'd listen to you when he won't listen to me?" The smile grew wry, "Because I don't, and I don't want you having to deal with him anymore than you already do, either." They reached the arena and she eyed the small tower with both anticipation and apprehension. Hopefully she wouldn't have to go a little crazy this time. "He didn't get caught, understand? He told me himself."
They neared the table and she pulled her phone from her skirt pocket.

"Probably shoulda got a real door awhile ago anyway," she admitted a bit wistfully as she set the phone on the table. Should have, but didn't. For reasons.
He gazed dismally at the tower and flopped into the seat on the far side of the table, already looking as though he'd lost the game and been sent home in a state of public disgrace.
"Ladies first," he said, shoving his uncooperative hands into his pockets and absolutely refusing to touch anything.

"Alrighty then," America agreed as she seated herself across from him, eyeing the tower intently before reaching out. "Guess I'll just have to show you how it's done." Quick as a snake she grabbed up a piece, flipped it high up into the air, and caught it, depositing the block neatly on top of the tower.
Grinning she raised her eyebrows at him. "See? Nothing to it. We'll get you through this is no time, and then you can treat me."

Life Hunter BATTLE ARENA
General Information The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.
Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.
If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...
If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.
Mechanics - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.
- you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)

Round 4
Pieces: 5 Points per piece: 10 Trainee Roll: 1d4 Life Trainee Roll: 1d6 Hunter Roll: 1d6 Life Hunter Roll: 1d8
Bonus Mechanics Life Hunters train for precise hand eye coordination and exceptional judgement, thus they have a slightly lower chance of knocking down the tower.
He watched her without the faintest ripple of pleasure or admiration and then, without comment, reached out, extracted a piece, and replaced it on top. This he performed without flourish, and also without hesitation. It was the picture of the word mechanical, neatly illustrated.
"Are you sure he's actually creeping on you, or is he just saying that to get a rise out of you? Not that I doubt him," he added drily. "Just curious."

She rolled her eyes and pushed her phone at him, "The DM's." In her opinion, Taym very rarely seemed impressed with anything unless it was to be a sarcastic s**t about something, so she wasn't too disappointed by the lack of reaction. Instead she kept her attention on the tower, eventually selecting a new piece and waiting until a distracting laser had moved on.
He ignored the offer for the time being, focused on the task at hand. The shaky, traitorous, awful hand. The sudden tremor jarred the tower and it swayed, already, but was too fresh to collapse. He shot her a look that dared her to comment, and replaced the brick.
"If there's creepy ******** sexts in there I don't want to read them," he said, reaching for her phone anyway, his trembling fingers sliding over the screen.

The girl snorted, "He wishes." Pursing her lips as the tower wobbled slightly, she continued, "But the creepy part isn't wrong."
"Why should he wish when he's getting the real thing on a regular basis?" he pointed out, clumsily navigating his way to her direct messages and feeling wonderfully, thrillingly intrusive. He didn't even put the phone down before attempting another piece, and the distraction showed.
