Getting packages, gifts, notes or whatever have you back home when Esmeralda couldn’t carry anything anymore had become an increasing problem the Dovaa has to deal with. Someone had suggested birds, and she’d even heard something about a Vlidean. She’s also looked into Alkarai, but she had no idea where exactly she’ even find one. Vlidean it was then. The Dovaa was sure she could properly deal with their nature, passing it off as sassy rather than evil as she’d heard. So, the smartest way she’d found to capture one was with a net and wait for one to get caught up in the net. Esmeralda was of course, sceptical of this approach; this was until she heard the cry and her trap working. She’s actually caught a Vlidean! The net had closed in on the bird and now it was suspended, glaring angrily at her from its position. She judged it was young and would need training now that she’d successfully captured it.
Muriel was unopposed to the idea of Esmeralda going out and finding some scary bird to tame and train. After all, the Dovaa did not hide the fact that she would be riding her once she was big enough which meant carrying things as well. Now this Muriel was opposed to, she was an intellectual, not a mule! And considering this adventure was one of Esmerlada’s les perilous ones, there was no way she’d be able to stop her anyway. The birds were certainly dangerous, but so was he now and she was going to make sure they knew it too. So, for the whole capture, Muriel sat back and watched.

How do you best approach something that is angry at you? The only possible way Esmeralda could think of was if she fed it. Now that Muriel was large enough to actually help, they’d managed to get the young captured Vlidean down on the ground and tied it so that it could move in its net. The first day Esmeralda couldn’t get close, the youngster tried to get at her, so they had to resort to throwing food at it. It took a week before Esmeralda could get close without getting charged at. Her goal was so that the Vlidean would associate her with food and shelter and everything that was good. Another week went by and she could now get close enough without getting hurt. That had actually taken a couple of tries because low and behold it thought she was food! Though it quickly learned that the Dovaa was not after Muriel snapped at it a couple of times. Finally however, it ate food out of Esmeraldas hand and it was time for some serious training.
Esmeralda requested some help from Muriel and she complied then, having no other reason t unless she wanted to see Esmeralda hurt. In fact, she’d even snapped at the thing a couple of times. She stared it down making sure it understood that harming the Dovaa would not be acceptable under any circumstances. In the end, the stupid bird did understand and it stopped attacking her. It glared at Muriel though, but she was content with knowing that it wouldn’t attack her Bonded for fear of her. This made her hold her head high and give the bird a toothy smile once or twice.

Esmeralda gave the Vlidean another week before she finally untangled it from the net; she’s previously made sure to tie its foot down just in case it decided to try something. Granted as the Dovaa looked at her Bonded who was having a staring match with the Vlidean, she doubted it would be going anywhere. And so the training began, always with food so that it would understand it got a reward. However, Esmeralda simply could not get the bird to do what it wanted. It was like trying to teach a child that would only do something if there was a sweet involved. There was simply nothing she could do to keep its attention. Maybe she was simply not doing it the right way; she was after all new to this taming thing. Yes, it would be better if she tried to capture one that was younger.
It took forever it seemed to calm the damn thing down; Esmeralda seemed relentless in her actions. Muriel still had not interfered, even when her Bonded began to train the thing. She could see right away forever, that it simply was too stupid a bird to know what Esme wanted from it. This, Muriel told the Dovaa who had to reluctantly agree with the Drakein. She wasn’t surprised; Muriel was quiet opposed to having a stupid bird do the work, suggesting maybe they try to find another Drakein. Not that her suggestion had anything to do with that fact that she’d love to have another Drakein around.
