Burning Bridges Things were going well, at least, that's what the majority of the herd believed. They had found a new land ripe for the slaughter; a place where lesser's lived in great abundance, and kalona were somewhat scarce. The pickings were lush, according to the Great Leader, and from the amount of blood already spilled, things simply couldn't get better. Unfortunately, while the herd as a whole appeared to be doing well, there were ripples that spread throughout the herd. Not everyone followed the Great Leader so blindly, so thoughtlessly, with such devotion. The Great Alpha and her Protector had served the herd well enough, if those within truly embraced a darker sort of lifestyle. Blood, violence, power, it was what they promised to give their beloved kin, it was what they worked for everyday, what they strove to obtain. And yet. . . This Uncertain Lieutenant could not continue to agree. In every battle, he watched as their kin were forced to instigate needless, senseless bloodshed. In every battle, he watched as his won kalona fell, slain for another mile of land. Families were torn apart every time orders were given, and while they were a very capable force, while they all lived for battle, this was a waste. Not everyone born in to the herd was so blind or blood crazed. . . But there was no escape. Those that betrayed the herd were made examples of. The weak were not tolerated, not weak of mind, not weak of body, not weak of spirit, and yet. . . they could not go on like this. They were doing nothing but antagonizing the neighboring herds and killing them with needless violence. Prisoners were often tortured and eaten. Mare, stallion, foal, there was no prejudice among age, race, or kind. If they were caught and they were not of pure kalona blood, they did not survive. Some found this life to be absolutely in line with chaos and the great Kalona spirit. But him? No. He would not, could not agree. The kalona were a proud race, but he was not proud of the mass destruction that was caused in their Leaders wake. They were a herd of monsters. It was one thing to defend ones territory, it was quite another to be in a constant state of chaos and war. They would be their own undoing, one day, and would only give cause for more persecution from the lessers. The loop had to be stopped. There was a small group of them, from various ranks and positions, that agreed with his sentiments. Unfortunately, the small families, the handful of warriors, the retired elders, they lived in fear of being found out. Fear of retribution, should they be found out. They were not yet strong enough to make an escape, not yet. But, this Lieutenant could help where he could. Too many tears had been shed, too much violence had taken place. . . So it was, he would help. Picking his way through the woodlands, the light of the waning crescent provided little light. He could not delay another night, for the next battle was already prepped and planned. Tomorrow, more blood would be shed on an unsuspecting herd. "You're not going to them, aren't you?" The hiss of disdain was heard, and the stallion stopped in his tracks. He swung his head around to see his daughter step out from the shadows. She was young, scarred, and the only survivor of his lineage. His mate, his sons, all killed in battle. . .or cannibalized on in a moments betrayal. Thankfully, this one was strong. . . strong, and of the same mind. She had been taught to respect the land, the earth, every breath she took. "It is senseless. This herd, they will not win and they will be slaughtered. At least this way, they can prepare." The mare stared at her father, tail flicking anxiously behind her. ". . .This is dangerous. If you're found out - - " "There is no one to find me out. I'll return before they even realize I'm gone." "... but their lesser's. Why should you risk yourself?" She questioned severely, eyes narrowing. "Because nobody deserves to be so massacred," he repeated with a hiss. "These lands were not our enemy. HE made them our enemy and we both pay the price. Hush now, daughter, and fear not. I'll be back soon. If I fall, carry on as we always have." Reaching out, he nuzzled the mare in a moments pride and affection, knowing quite well that the lesser's would kill him the moment they found him near their borders. Still, it was a risk he was willing to take. A risk he had to take. They could not stop their herd, not yet, but he could give warning to the victims, warning to at least get the foals out of harms way. With that, the stallion slipped through the woods and in to the night. The daughter watched, before heaving a breath and shaking her head. Honestly, she didn't know what to do. . . . Was family greater than her herd? This was wrong. This was right. This was . . . something. Something she didn't know how to comprehend.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Nikkichomp
Daughter's Name Bronagh (Irish for Sorrow)
Temper Detached
Brief Personality: Bronagh's mood is liable to change at the drop of a hat. She has become increasingly unstable since the death of her mother and sister, and her brother's death only cemented her slow slide into psychosis. Other than her family, she holds nothing and no one dear. What is the relationship like with her father? She had always looked up to her father. With the loss of her mother and sister, she began to cling to her father and follow his lead. Once they lost her brother, too, she started parroting his actions and supporting his decisions in every way.
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd!
Please explain why the mare chooses this path: She has been involved in meetings with rebels, and now her father has told her that he will not condone the actions of the herd as a whole. Although the idea of betraying the herd shakes her for a moment, it does not take her long to decide to follow the path her father is on, whatever it may be. He was the only family she had left, the only thing on this earth that she held dear, and the rest of her precious family had been torn away by the herd, in one form or another. They were strong; they did not need this herd. And although it means getting involved with lessers, there is no other path for her to take.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: dawns_aura Daughter's Name Kalina Temper Machiavellian Brief Personality: Expediency over morality. Self before others. Strength and purity of kalona lineage above all else. She and her father were all they had left since the death of her mother, sister and brother, so she held as much fondness for him as she was capable of feeling. She also has seen how wrong the actions of her herd are and she is subtly working among the upper levels of the hierarchy to affect positive changes from within. That was the only intelligent thing to do, and she is very intelligent and calculating. In her own way she is loyal. Not necessarily to family or herd, but rather to the proud kalona race as a whole. She is not afraid of getting her hooves dirty, and is willing to do whatever is necessary.
What is the relationship like with her father? There is as much fondness between the two as can be expected from such a rigorous and strict race. There is much coolness and formality. They both drive each other hard to become better, stronger. But when it comes down to one another the herd or the self, they will always choose to save themselves first.
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Father!
Please explain why the mare chooses this path: He taught her strength, and here he was. A hypocrite. Weak. Betraying everything they both believed in. But in a way he isn't wrong. What the herd was doing was more harmful than beneficial. But there were better ways to address the issue than throw everything away with an ill considered act. To go against the herd so openly... It wasn't a matter of 'if' but rather 'when' he was discovered, he was dead. There was no other path available to him. To one who would be deemed a traitor. A brief twinge pulled at her heartstrings, but was quickly dismissed, his death would be for the best. He was weak.
And weakness could not be permitted.
But to turn him in would also be betrayal. He was still family. Blood. And in her own way, she still held affection for him. So she would offer him the dignity of a quick death. That was the only mercy he deserved.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: o-Elixir-o
Daughter's Name Zenobia
Temper Self-Preservation
Brief Personality: She is someone that will do what it takes to stay alive. She may not always agree with the decisions but she’ll take the best route that will benefit her. She has a tendency to be cold for she wishes not to grow any sort emotion to anything that she might possibly have to kill one day.
What is the relationship like with her father? Unstable, she finds him to be a wildcard in her life.
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Father!
Please explain why the mare chooses this path: The minute he made the decision was the minute she realized she could no longer take the risk. He may be blood but what if he was to be caught? Would that also bring punishment down upon her? In the long run her family if anything was the herd he was about to betray. A small part of her made her feel grievance for what she was about to do to her own father. It would be the blood she’d have to carry throughout her life.
No matter, he was not about to cost the trust of her herd. She was not about to be exiled or even worse killed for his disgusting actions. She let out a deep sigh clearing out any form of remorse she felt for her decision and headed back towards her herd. Her eyes harden and her emotion masked she approached the leader “Hey---there’s something I have to tell you.”

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: xxx Yuki Bear xxx
Daughter's Name Maeve
Temper Bitter
Brief Personality: Maeve is very fidgety and nervous. Ever since the death of her mother and siblings, she sleeps with one eye open and is constantly on the lookout for betrayal and pain. This has skewed her perception of others so much, that even those that she is very close to can be seen as enemies in the blink of an eye.
Despite her nervousness, Maeve strives to be the best Kalona she can, using her father as an example. She uses his teachings to calm herself and feel powerful.
After her father leaves her, Maeve becomes very bitter towards those of 'lesser' standing. Despite her upbringing, she comes to despise non-Kalona, because she believes that they are the reason her father abandoned her. She is still very cautious of those around her and trusts nobody. What is the relationship like with her father? Maeve sees her father as her protector throughout her childhood and early adulthood, and the shining example of a proud and strong Kalona. However, when his discontent with their herd becomes apparent to her, she worries endlessly about him leaving her. When he inevitably 'abandons' her to the mercy of their herd, and betrays her and her race, she finally snaps.
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Father!
Please explain why the mare chooses this path: Maeve believes that her father has betrayed her and left her to go save those that were against their very blood. She takes this as an extreme offense, and without her father to gently guide her towards the correct path, Maeve lets her tumultuous emotions get the better of her. She runs back to the herd and screeches her father's betrayal to them - because without him, they were all she had left.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: DraconisSiirexus Daughter's Name Contra ((Catalan for "Against")) Temper Free-willed Brief Personality: Like her temper, she is free-willed and likes to think on her own. She was tough and brave, and always knew how to stand strong if it meant defending herself or others. She never likes to agree to things that meant she would go as low as the Kalonas that like war. She always takes care of family then friends, since she finds family more important to her. What is the relationship like with her father? Seeing as he is the only family left for her, see will be a bit worrisome whenever she doesn't know where he goes, and she always spends her time with him and sticks by his side. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: Knowing it was terrible to betray the herd, she didn't want to risk lost of her only family, so she began to think of it. She didn't want him to die, he wanted him to live and the bloodshed to stop already. She would feel guilty at first for betraying the herd, but the war had to end. She was responsible to keep with her father till death, so she knew that her own life would have to be sacrificed to save his. With a bow, she began to follow behind him, hoping that if she followed as well that they would think that they both were going to do something other then flee and save the next herd to attack. Each silent step she made, she began to hear her own heartbeat begin to increase, making her feel uneasy about this whole thing, but she had already made her choice in the matter. Closer and closer they went to the border, her heart racing as she knew she was going to panic, but kept herself calm and cool, though in her head she was just using a mask to hide her nervous self about it all. Without knowing, he stopped and looked back, and when she did they were over the border and she relaxed again, believing and trusting him more.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Cheyriddle4 Daughter's Name Tiponi- "Child of Importance" Hopi origin Temper Vigilant Brief Personality: Not one to let feelings sway her decisions Tiponi takes everything in consideration. If she doesn't understand something she tries to put herself in the others hooves and see what is pushing them to follow a particular path. She doesn't like to be caught unaware so she is very observant. Loyal to those she cares about. She tries to keep family first yet the herd is also family to her. What is the relationship like with her father? Tiponi has always been close to her father. He taught her to fight and other things throughout her life. His approval is something she has always strived for yet her brother always took from her. Well that is the way she see's it. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: Tiponi loves fighting as much as the rest but she has some morals to uphold. Her viewpoints don't quite agree with the herds and she is just scratching the surface on just how much her views are different. Every day she starts to understand the Rebel's views. When her father sets out she doesn't fully comprehend. Yet she knows her fathers nature. She knows he doesn't do anything without fully going through the consequences. Yet she fears for him. Her ties to family is strong and the more she puts herself in his mindset the more she starts to understand what is propelling him to do this. Little by little she starts to agree with him. Yet she is conflicted because she doesn't want to lose the herd. Her father is all she has left. In the end blood is thicker than water. She trusts that her father judgement is sound. All she can do is hope that he isn't found out.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Ryuukishin Daughter's Name Axelle Temper Diligent Brief Personality: The sudden deaths in her family have made her fickle; in order to avoid any more suffering, she forms and severs ties as she needs to based on how likely it is the individual will cause her pain. She changes her behavior to reflect the status she gives to others, being strongly devoted to the former and highly detached to the latter. However, though her actions towards individuals may change quickly, her values and love for her family lie intact. What is the relationship like with her father? She admired her father greatly but has desperately tried to grow distant once he started meeting with the rebels. She fears his end is soon to come. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: Axelle was conflicted about the decision to help her father; if he was caught, he’d be tortured. She knew his strength, but what of his endurance to a torment he’d never faced before? If he spoke and gave them up, the rebels would be at risk, yet even if he kept silent, his punishment would serve to demoralize the others – the Great Leader would make sure of that.
And if he was not – what then? She did not miss the implications of his words, nor the lessons she’d been taught of the lessers. He would be killed, or the others would look down upon him for dealing with them if he was not.
No matter what, it seemed every one of his decisions only led him closer to his own failure, his own death. She was bitter that he would risk himself so, when they’d already lost so much. He was good and brave and strong, and the rebels needed him, but couldn’t he see that she needed him more than they?
Feeling forsaken, and even frightened, she followed after her father. She pleaded with him, begged. Her earlier severity fell away like petals in the breeze; she looked a fool, and she knew it. But she couldn’t lose him.
---
She was alone when she returned to the herd – alone and unsuccessful. The Great Leader looked to her, his gaze questioning. She knew what she could do, what she should do. It would have been so easy to tell him, to manipulate what she knew and get the lessers' herd killed before her father reached them.
But as much as she needed him... perhaps he needed her, too. She shook her head and walked away.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Mewsings of An Angel Daughter's Name ÆGLÆCA "Glaeca" - Anglo-Saxon -- "demon, monster" and "hero, warrior" Temper Survivor Brief Personality: Glaeca has seen those she loves killed in a rain of blood. She has seen her herd turn their face when her family needed them most. She is fearless, loyal to her blood and to her race. However, if things turn sour, she strives to survive, even if it means turning her eyes in order to do so. She knows pain, and is finds comfort in it if only for the fact it is something that is "always".
What is the relationship like with her father? From foalhood, she has watched her father with admiration. What he did, he did to survive. There was nothing wrong with that fact. She learned to be fearless in decisions and strong and fine of tooth and claw. She grew to be wiry and strong and intelligent of mind and strategy. Blood was commonplace, and her father taught her to battle. He is an idol, teacher, protector... he is the only thing that sometimes made sense in the bewildering lifestyle that her herd followed.
Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd!
Please explain why the mare chooses this path: As always, Glaeca trusts her father, trusts her family above all. His views, confusing as they are are crystal in the fact that surviving is the most important thing. Killing those who could not fight... it lacked thrill. A battle without sense was truly just a massacre. But for them to be aware... it would mean they would have defenses up and that her herd would have to actually try.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Painted Moose Daughter's Name Andromeda Temper Resolute Brief Personality: Steadfast and determined, Andromeda has proven herself to be the ultimate soldier. While she often comes across as emotionless, this just makes her all the more ruthless of an opponent. She is not quick to expose her inner thoughts, as they would be seen as a sign of weakness, and follows commands with militaristic precision. Orders are to be followed, and while a soul may bear questions about them, it is not their place to vocalize them. What is the relationship like with her father? Uncertain. Since she was a filly Andromeda had always been more of a mama’s girl, and upon her passing she stepped into her mother’s role. Since she views her bloodline as strong and pure, like most of her kind, she’s tried to mend the bond with her father to the best of her abilities, if for nothing else than to keep the family strong, but has always found a rift. It’s as if he’s in some place she cannot follow. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: Andromeda’s entire life has hinged on the teachings of her breed, and what was expected of her to aid in its succession. However, as it is even within the most steadfast soldier, she began to see the truth of her current cause. Through the secret meetings she began to see just how truly deranged her herd had become. Instead of the prideful, true rulers they had been, could still have been, they had stooped to peltless Skinwalkers. To be true to the Kalona was to carry a method to the madness, instead of allowing the bloodlust to rule over you, and her father had seen it long ago. Andromeda would leave to go with her father for the time being, to seek out other Kalona herds that still retained the traditional beliefs, and stand against the plague that swept the land.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Baby Pandah Daughter's Name Novaria Temper Tolerating Brief Personality: She was taught to respect life and differences and so she has never truly considered lessers as something to be slaughtered. Tolerated yes, but not wiped off the face of the planet. She believes they belong in the Kawani lands just as much as any Kalona, even if her race is far superior. She values intelligence over brute strength. She is curious about all types of life and highly respects intelligence. What is the relationship like with her father? Lately her relationship with her father has been strained or nonexistent. They have both been busy doing their own things. When she sees him, she thinks of her family and how they're gone and that is stressful for her. But underneath their sad connection, their bond is very strong. She loves him and respects him, he taught her everything she knows and he's all she has left. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: At first she was simply curious about the other side. She attended the rebel meetings and took in all of the information she could. At first the others were hesitant to trust her because they knew she was the Lieutenant's daughter but she gained their respect quickly by not giving them away. Her curiosity and appreciation for life kept her moving forward, and one day she came face to face with one of the lessers. After speaking with him she realized how intelligent they were, not much different than her own race. She began to appreciate his view of the world more and more each time they met, and she fell in love with him. She had never felt a love so deep besides the love she felt for her family. But just like her family, his life came to an end too soon. The rebels gave her the news of his passing during battle. She felt as if the world had lost a beautiful soul, and because of what? Blood and battle. The things her race had practiced for generations now made her sick. She became enraged at her own kind. This had to stop. If someone didn't do something soon, she would.
But then her father beat her to it. When he told her what he was doing she couldn't help smiling on the inside. They were so alike. She had been taught to be proud of her Kalona heritage, and so she was proud to be his daughter. If it had not been for him, she would not have been Kalona. She looked into his eyes and missed her family, her brother who had died so horribly...she shuddered at the thought. If she lost her father now she would be the last of their family standing. But he would die for a good cause, a cause that any of their family would have proudly fought for. And she would continue to fight if he died now. She owed him that, she owed her family and the world that. "... but they're lessers. Why should you risk yourself?" She asked him, testing that his intentions were true. His answer was what she had been thinking for a long time. The Kalona within her squirmed uncomfortably and hated the both of them for this disgusting betrayal. But her feelings for the lesser she had fallen in love with were strong as well. She had to face these feelings, she had to end this war.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Bardess Ookami Daughter's Name Kolacul Temper This is what you'd see on the cert! Conflicted Brief Personality: She likes to seem firm in her choices, she refuses to let anyone she doesn't trust see her being indecisive, even if that means taking a path she is unsure of. She's willing to say she changed her mind, if she can do it in a haughty "I dare you to question me" way, never if it means admitting she was wrong, or did not know. What is the relationship like with her father? He's the only one left that she trusts completely. Words like "I love you" never passed between them. But she was sure he knew, after all, she let down her guard a little around him. So, clearly he knew all he needed to know. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray Herd! Please explain why the mare chooses this path: She wouldn't make the choice publicly, not just yet. If he made it back safe, then she was firmly for the rebels... until the next time she had to choose. But if he died at the hooves of the lessers... she would leave. After all, the lessers would have proved that they were everything the leader said they were, but her own herd is still no better. If her own herd killed her father...? Well, she might not survive long after him, but she'd sure as sun take as many of them down with her as she could.

I'm Going to Stand My Ground Username: Zactura. Daughter's Name: Servius - to preserve. Temper: Reserved. Brief Personality: Withdrawn and cold, Servius is built to endure. She's mostly silent, only rarely using her voice to lance through whatever unfortunate plan or comment that raises her ire enough to warrant words. She's tactical, calm, and quick-witted--and for these reasons, her father has been carefully grooming her into a prime candidate to succeed him behind closed doors. Servius has a good mind for battle, but only a small taste for it; that is most likely what will prove to be her downfall later on in life, if the war continues. What is the relationship like with her father? Servius and her father have a fairly cordial relationship, with the two of them mostly communicating non-verbally or not at all when together. They don't mind, though--they're both not the most vocal sorts, and prefer to save their words for when the time is right instead of 'wasting' them elsewhere. Trust is something that's present in a reasonable amount, but it's not a particularly solid thing; Servius knows that her father just wants what's best for her, but when either of them are likely to get killed from day to day, she doesn't want to break down the wall of ice that she's built between them for both her safety and his. Will she betray her father and turn him in, or betray her herd and pretend she saw nothing? Betray her herd. Please explain why the mare chooses this path: After this much war and bloodshed, Servius is more than done with having her part in combat. She's aware that she doesn't have much choice in the matter, but that doesn't mean she has to like it--but her father's attempt at warning the other herd puts her in more than a bit of a sticky situation. If her father dies, suspicion will likely fall to her for being his daughter, as well as the other herd being mercilessly wiped out--but if he succeeds and the lessers fight back and win, she very well may die anyway. Even then, her father is the only somewhat stable thing in her life, and Servius has no intention of letting that go any time soon.
