For the first day after he'd made his inaugural rune journey, Taym had been absolutely confident that round two would go just as swimmingly (no pun intended, except it was Taym, so possibly intended a little). But every day reminded him that he was not naturally lucky, or skilled, or even remotely competent, and so by the time he'd weaseled a second tank out of the Sun division and meandered down to the early-morning beach, he was feeling decidedly grim.
This feeling was not helped at all by the fact that he could see, almost as soon as he dove in, that the way was obstructed. He hesitated, treading water for a bit after a thoughtful resurfacing. He crawled out, then waded back in.
There was nothing for it. Whatever it was, it was smaller than the thing last time. He'd have a go at getting past it.
At some point, Taym's life had become a life that included the thought: oh, but it's just a little monster, like, size of a car, tops. That's doable. This was a melancholy realization.

The thing was, it was doable. Either the Thing wasn't a morning person, or Taym was, or possibly, as always, it was just dumb luck. In any case, after a few leery seconds of assessing it, Taym found a way past it that didn't seem to piss it off.

A tense and uneventful descent ensued, and then he was back, and he immediately went to see if he could uncover the stash he'd found last time, if no one had kicked their way into it yet. He was apprehended. He didn't see what they were attached to, but a few suckered arms snaked out of the darkness in the back of the caves, and he was too slow to get out of the way.

They hurt. A lot. Enough that he instinctively (and when did that become instinct) summoned Fionnghal into his hands, despite his insistence last time that bringing a glittery light into a dark undersea cave was asking for trouble. He ended up not needing her, struggling away but not before his shield took a major dent and his self-confidence took a major blow.

Assaying much more cautiously--as befitted a damned Death hunter who shouldn't have been running heedless into the maw of danger anyway--he managed to locate a cache near where the last had been.

Damn. He'd hoped he'd be able to n** in and out as quickly as he had last time, but this was a foreboding start. He pocketed two stones.

He was interrupted by the sensation of movement in the periphery of his vision, and turned to follow it.
Well, that was horrifying. Ariel this was not. He had the feeling they weren't interested in any Prince Charmings, either, and he damn sure didn't qualify, regardless. Maybe another cave would be wise, if they didn't follow him right out.

He backed slowly away--backing up underwater was an odd sensation--and hightailed it. Somehow this worked. He briefly considered booking it right back up to the surface, but he only had two rocks, dammit, and that was just insufficient.
He paused and waited. Nothing immediately manifested to devour him or eat his soul or whatever horrifying mermaids did.

Back to work. He gingerly prodded a pile of rocks with his foot, and tensed.

When nothing slithered out, he relaxed. When instead he realized he was looking at a pocket of runestones, he allowed himself one tiny, triumphant fistpump. This was hard to do with the proper finesse while underwater, but he managed.

His triumph didn't last long. Either there was a major mermaid infestation or these things were all connected. Either way, the vague grey shapes materializing in the depths and the pinpoints of glowing blue suggested that a quick exit was advisable.

So he did, cutting it ridiculously, unacceptably close. What happened to being wily and sneaky, a*****e?

When he found what appeared to be another safe spot, he realized he was sharing it with a clump of waving fronds that looked terribly familiar. He threw a rock at it. Nothing happened.
He got closer. Curiosity got the best of him.
He reached out.
FOR SCIENCE!

At first, nothing. And then, just as he was getting comfortable and reassuring himself that no, not everything around here bit, it bit.

Unfortunately, seaweed wasn't the only thing around here that bit. Fionnghal noticed it almost before he did, sharply calling out a wordless warning in his head. This was going considerably less smoothly than last time. ******** squid-arms everywhere.
