User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Balancing things was more difficult than she thought. Both literally and figuratively. “Uh…Ah…!” The ghostly foal stumbled around, balancing a stack of boxes on top of her head. She pursed her lips and whipped her tail nervously. “Don’t drop it…don’t drop it…” But at the same time, she had to get all of these boxes over to the bakery so she could run to the library and…! Just thinking about all of the things Jolly had to do made her dizzy.

And then everything fell. “Oh no!” she muttered in a soft voice. Jolly held back any tears before reluctantly leaning over to begin picking up the boxes one by one.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.A vermilion unicorn colt had just been walking along, minding his own business when an avalanche of boxes toppled from what seemed to be the sky. They fell everywhere, Truths only just managing to dodge them well-enough not to get hit. He was outraged; someone could have seriously been hurt - particularly him!

But when the perpetrator came to light, the colt's temper dissipated almost instantly. He watched her pick up a couple before moving to help her collect the rest. "...What's in them?" he asked aloud, keeping her in his peripheral vision at all times. Maybe if he distracted her from her slight mishap, perhaps he could avoid watching her spill those tears she was so dangerously close to shedding. Hard Truths didn't really know what to do with himself around crying fillies and mares and it made him immensely uncomfortable.

So caught up with cleaning up her own mess, Jolly hadn’t realized she had nearly covered somephony with boxes too. Only when he began to help her pick up the boxes did she realize. “Oh! I’m so sorry. I didn’t hurt you, did I?” she asked with furrowed brows. It was the first thing on her mind, but eventually she managed to remember his question. “Oh! Right. Um. Nothing fragile, fortunately. Mostly clothes and all toys. I’m helping someone move.”

The tears had instantly disappeared soon as she sensed another presence. She didn’t want to cause any trouble by crying. Besides, wasn’t it better to pick yourself up and press forward? "I'm Jolly, by the way. Jolly Rancher. Thanks for the help."

He huffed at her question. "If you had, I would have let you know. I'm fine," he informed her. "It seems to me like you're the one who needs help. Do you often take on more than you can handle?"

Grunting at her thanks, he nodded. "Jolly...I'm Hard Truths. What are you doing trying to move so many boxes on your own? You could have hurt yourself. And other phonies, besides," he scolded.

Jolly pressed her lips together. “Well, if you say so. Eh? Ah! Uuum.” It took her a moment to figure out an answer before suspiciously insisting, “No, not at all! This is nothing. I just tripped on accident. That’s all.” She tried to brush it off with forced laughter before the façade melted altogether. It was difficult to lie to someone called Hard Truths.

“Everyphony is so busy, so I thought it would be better to not bother them and do it myself. I didn’t think the boxes would be so heavy.” She hung her head and brushed one hoof against the ground. “I guess I was wrong. I’m sorry.”

Casting the filly an incredulous look, the unicorn was mildly annoyed by the idea that she thought she could have lied to him and gotten away with it, even for a second. "Hmph. I see you take me for a fool," he murmured, expressing his disappointment.

She seemed to give up her facade relatively quickly, however, as she explained her real reasoning. Speaking a little more gently, Truths sighed. "It's alright. You had good intentions, it sounds like. I think if you hurt yourself, though, it would be more of a bother to everyone involved." Taking a few boxes, he hoisted them onto his back.

"Unh. Still might be too many...might have to come back for them. Jolly, are these due to be anywhere by any certain time?" He had assumed she had been in a hurry or else she probably would have been smart enough to take the boxes in several trips. If they were to reduce it to one, he suspected he might have to use his magic, which he usually avoided doing when he could. This time, however, it might have been necessary.

((It's perfectly fine. XD I'm sure we all know how that is. I've been pretty absent myself.))

Her heart twisted. “No! That wasn’t it. I just didn’t want to bother you,” she insisted with knitted brows. Jolly’s hoof drew random circles in the ground. “Yeah, that’s true,” she admitted quietly. But it was one thing to say something and another to actually do it. To say she would start asking others for help when she needed it was too much too soon.

Her face lit up with alarm. “Oh! You don’t need to…” The filly’s voice drifted off as soon as she realized what she was doing. No way he would appreciate that, so she opted to zip her lips and mutely allow the other phony to carry a few boxes on his back. “Um, thank you,” she whispered, lowering her head as she bent down to pick up a few boxes herself. “She’d like them in as soon as possible, but as long as I can get them in by the end of the day she’ll manage somehow. That’s what she said.”

As Jolly balanced a couple on her back, she looked at Truths nervously. “And um, thanks, again.” This time she managed an uneasy smile. “So um, we have to go this way.” She nodded her head in a particular direction before walking.

Shaking his head, the curt colt rolled his eyes. "If I'm asking you, it's no bother to me. And even if I wasn't, there are better ways to go about diffusing the concern of others than outright lying to them. That'll just make them worry more once they find out the truth," he explained. "Not to mention suggest to them that you don't trust them with the truth and make them feel even worse."

Glancing back at her as she stopped herself in the middle of her sentence, he smirked a bit. "There you go," he said, nodding in approval as she thanked him. "You're welcome. I know I don't need to, but if I didn't want to, I wouldn't be doing it. Maybe others would, but I'm not that kind of phony. I speak my mind for better or for worse, if you hadn't already noticed." He looked at her. "Would you help the phony you're helping move if you didn't want to?"

Nodding some more as Jolly explained the situation, he readjusted the load on his back and raised his head higher so he could see where they were going. "My pleasure," he said to her second expression of gratitude, dipping his head in acknowledgement. "Lead on." Doing his best to keep the boxes balanced, he followed after the filly as quickly as he could.

The more he talked, the guiltier Jolly felt, but she silently bore with it because as much as she hated to admit it, his words held a fistful of truth to them. Sometimes it was better to just suck it up and take your medicine, as distasteful as it could be.

Jolly smiled weakly at his approval. At this rate, this was probably the closest thing to a compliment she would ever get from him. She laughed at Truths. “I’ve definitely noticed, but it’s not a bad thing. It’s good that you say what you think. It clears things up.” A pause. “As long as you try to word it nicely, at least.” But so far, the other phony had been pretty nice about laying down the truth to her. He wasn’t chewing her out or anything like that.

She nodded, carefully walking past Truths and toward a nearby bakery. “We’re going to a bakery, but we have to take the back door to avoid customers. Is that okay?” she said, craning her neck slightly toward him.

The unicorn hesitated, a mix of expressions on his face. Wording it nicely...that's what Mooncake had suggested he do, too, but how could he do that without detracting from the truth? He didn't want to p***y-foot around issues. What if others didn't get what he was trying to say if he wasn't outright and direct about it?

"...Sorry," he said, realizing he had probably been pretty harsh, especially for their first meeting. He remembered how she almost looked like she was going to cry when she first dropped the boxes. "I'll try to do that next time." It was one thing to be direct with another colt, but fillies seemed to take things a little more personally from what he could tell. It wouldn't hurt to word things a bit more subtly, he figured, since fillies were sensitive as well as smart and they would probably catch on quicker than any colt.

He continued to carry the boxes as carefully as he could manage, nodding slightly when Jolly explained the situation. "Yes, that's fine," he answered. "I generally prefer to avoid others anyway. They'll only get in our way."

Jolly beamed at Truths. “Of course, sometimes it’s good to be direct! Sometimes even necessary. It’s just that some situations require more delicacy, you know? I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it. I know you can.”

“That’s good! Oh! Um.” She pursed her lips together. “Yes, I suppose that’s true, but I don’t think it would’ve been that troublesome. Plus, it’s always nice to be able to say hi to the customers, don’t you think?” Well, considering he’d prefer going through the back, perhaps not. The filly spent most of the walk in contemplative silence before her face lit up and she twisted her neck toward Truths. “We’re almost there! It’s the second store on the right. We can just go through the alley to take the back door.”

True to her words, the two encountered a small general store painted pale yellow. The front was decorated with small, potted plants and the building was surrounded by a quaint fence. Her tail swished happily when she headed for the back and pushed the door open. “Auntie! I have the things you wanted!”

"Hmm..I don't, actually," the foal admitted. "You'll have to distinguish those for me. But I appreciate your...blind faith in me." It was cute, her belief that he could do it. It might even have been flattering, but he just wasn't sure what he had done to warrant such belief, if anything.

"Maybe not, but I'm concerned it'd be at least as troublesome as when you - I mean...when I was in your way earlier. And I was just one phony. There's bound to be a lot more at the entrance. They're not even our customers." He couldn't quite understand what was so nice about it. "Saying hello is all fine and dandy, but not while we're trying to keep our focus on the task at hoof."

He tilted his head around the boxes to look at her curiously. "You really like other phonies that much?" It almost reminded him of Candy. And...well, considering Jolly Rancher's name, she and Candy Dandy would probably get along very well. He wondered if they already knew each other.

Following as she led him through the alley, the unicorn colt was surprised to see that the back entrance appeared just as pleasant as any front entrance to a store that he'd witnessed before. He blinked when he heard Jolly's voice call to her...aunt? Or maybe she was just calling her that out of respect, but he didn't know any foals besides himself who were even aware anyone did that.

Deciding to worry about that later, he restrained his curiosity in order to set down the boxes by the door to see if he could keep it open for Jolly by the anchor of their weight.

She smiled. “Sure! I’d love to help you out with anything if I can, and I think it’d be really useful for you to get used to it. I think it’ll be really useful in smoothing over certain things in the future,” she insisted, her tail swishing happily.

Jolly hummed thoughtfully. “You definitely have a point there. I guess that’s a good thing about using the back door! Both ways have their pros and cons, I think,” she decided after mulling it over for a few moments. At the question, the pale phony giggled. She hoped he could see her nodding her head from behind the box. “Definitely. I love being with other phonies. I think it’s important to socialize with each other.”

Her call was met with a female voice, older, but also warm. “Jolly? Is that you? Just set it down on the floor, love. If you could help me put them away too, that’d be a load of help.” The foal called back a quick ‘okay’ before hurriedly walking through the door that Truths had managed to open. “Thanks! You can put them down here in the corner and I’ll take care of the rest. I’m sorry to take up all of your time with that.”

Kitomyx
s'fine! haha, I didn't notice that until you said that xD

"Important, hm?" he repeated, intrigued by her outlook. Loving to be around others was one thing, but considering socialization to be important was another. "Why do you think that?"

Standing in the doorway, the unicorn watched Jolly. "You're welcome," he answered. "And don't apologize. I was the one who offered to help, remember?" And he found himself still wanting to. After all, there was nothing much better he had to do today and he wanted to talk to this filly a little more. If she wasn't too busy, of course. But if he helped out and they didn't mind, it would half the workload and they could talk at the same time.

"Mostly clothes and toys, you said, right? Nothing fragile or in danger of breaking...?" he asked. "I could...stay and help some more. Unless you'd rather do it on your own," Truths added, remembering there were a great many things he preferred to do on his own. Some things you just had to do yourself in order to make sure they were done right, so he could understand if that was the case.
