VName: Katya Manning
VColor: ██████ Pestilence's Bile - #D0DC75
VAge: 13
VNationality: American
VHome/Financial Status: upper class, wealthy. Living in a medium-sized estate in the Anna district.
VSchool: Rosaline Academy

VPersonality:
An avid lover of books, Katya reads quickly and easily, devouring stories about girls who can save the world with their best friend and come home to castles with mothers, fathers, family. She still likes to daydream: mild fantasies about friendship and fun. She would practice in a mirror the scenes from her novels. smiling giggling, talking to the silvered glass as thought it was her best friend. Katya found herself wondering what it would be like to have people to talk to outside of her house. Over time, her daydreams evolved and became determinations and Katya resolved to change herself for the better from the outside in. No more would she simply wait and be afraid and alone.

And although her resolve is strong, Katya is afraid. Over a decade of nightmares and sleepless nights have acquainted her with the myriad of things that go bump in her nights. She is apprehensive and afraid, of death, of being alone, of being with people. It's not things she dreads most; scary movies or books hold no sway over her. After all, they are fiction, and she has lived with the reality of her own mind and that stricken hospital she wanders nightly. Even still, she finds that people, how they react, the new world of school: these are just as frightening as her dreams, although in an entirely new way. It's difficult, to want to be rid of loneliness yet be afraid of people. But Katya desperately wants a normal school-girl life.

For every situation, she's played out a thousand jittery outcomes in her head. The different phrases and possibilities ruin havoc through her often sleep-deprived mined. This constant imagining of results actually helps her steady herself in a way. Instead of causing Katya to flee everything, to give up and escape, her anxiety manifests itself in small, repetitive gestures: slowly twirling a lock of her hair, tapping her fingers in patterns, holding her thumbs as she talks. Even though these small fidgets help focus her, Katya still finds that her nervousness twists and turns the words on her tongue. She often says entirely the wrong thing, to her utmost mortification.

Shopping has helped her push past her near-crippling anxiety. While she is still not a terribly confident person, the little interactions forced between clerk and customer have bolstered her up. As such, she's come to enjoy shopping. It makes her feel pretty, beautiful; in her mind, the clothing makes her look like the person she wants to be. Katya knows the set roles of people within stores - no surprises lurk behind a clerk's service smile. Somehow, that is immensely comforting. Similarly, she finds it much easier to speak with and form attachments to people with clearly defined roles: teacher, nurse, clerk. Unfortunately, relating to her peers is still difficult for her. Their unpredictability is confusing and worrisome, unpredictable.

Despite her apprehension about people, she is determined to try her hardest to have a successful school year. Almost any goal is achievable through hard work, right? With this belief firmly in mind, Katya knows that one day she will make many friends, one day she will overcome her nightmares and one day, her father might take notice of her. All she has to do is keep working hard. The only things holding her back are her nightmares. These dreams taunt her even while she's waking, like a ticking countdown to dying.... alone, uncared for. Although she easily gets discouraged, Katya optimistically drags herself back up every time. Her determination is straightforward and incredibly strong, if a little idealistic, but no matter how many times Katya fails, she will push herself up towards her self-styled shining future. After all, any success, not matter how small, shines more brightly than the biggest failure.

VHistory:
User Image Originally from Estes Park, Colorado, Richard Manning left his family and their practice to pursue his dream of success in a state-of-the-art hospital. Teuful General Hospital had offered him a position in their esteemed family medicine department, and so he eagerly relocated. Soon after settling in, he met Emma Byrd, and it was love at first sight. Or, at the very least, intense infatuation. They were wrapped up entirely in each other as only first loves are. When Richard later found out that Emma's father was the hospital's director, it seemed just another push towards marriage for the couple. Why fight fate? Soon after their nuptials, Emma was pregnant. And so, into this insular family, Katya was born.

Richard and Emma loved their giggling daughter in their own way, although they remained obsessed mainly with each other. But Katya wanted for nothing; she had a nursemaid and more toys than she could ever play with. And if Emma was puzzled by her new motherhood and her daughter with bouncing curls, she tried not to show it and simply passed her along to a nurse. Unfortunately, on one of the rare family outings (without Richard, as work had called him in once again), a wayward car slammed into theirs, the crunch of metal drowning out Katya's high-pitched scream. The two-year-old only suffered a few cuts and bruises, but her mother had been wounded fatally and died in Teufel General.

Even right after she was gone, Katya had a hard time remembering her mother's face. There was only the impression of soft, cold hands, and blond hair. Or was it brown? Even her great grandmama couldn't describe her daughter-in-law and eventually Katya stopped asking. Over time, the images blurred further and her mother's face became an amalgamation of a thousand different women. Each nurse, nanny, tutor, and housekeeper looked like and yet not like her. It had been ten years since her death and the word 'mother' held less meaning than 'alone'.

For Katya always felt alone in her family. Or not alone, lonely. After Emma's death, her father had tossed himself wholeheartedly into his work and let nurses and nannies raise Katya. The loss of Emma was devastating to Richard; their love had been a symbiotic kind of love, and left him half a person. Seeing Katya, who was like a miniature Emma.... it was difficult. He began to avoid her. Richard wasn't around to watch the smile fade from Katy's face, to see her become more and more withdrawn. Even after the emotional wounds had scabbed over, Richard knew nothing of raising a child. Katya was a stranger to him.

Young and lonely, Katya begged again and again to be taken to her father's hospital. Her nannies, told to deny her nothing, dutifully took her and dutifully searched for her every time she ran away. The nurses grew familiar with her face and let her roam at her father's insistence. Katya was an unobtrusive shadow in the hospital, silent and ever-moving. Searching, she thought, in the simplistic view of a child, that if she looked hard enough, she could find her father in that hospital. And they would go for ice cream or to the park or see a movie or do any of the thousand little things that children want from their fathers.

She never found him. Katya lost track of the times she got lost; the winding hallways tricked and turned and smelled of disease and antiseptic. Eventually, she stopped asking to go to the hospital. But although she no longer went, the hospital remained in her dreams, a labyrinthine place of nightmares and failed hopes. The things she had seen over the years of running haunted every corner. Again and again, she saw the old woman with her rosary, silent tears rolling down her wrinkled face. She felt the stretcher rush past her, surrounded by yelling nurses and the metallic tang of blood. The halls changed as she walked them; looking into the dream rooms only showed Katya horrific images: people swallowed by wires and machines, people dying, their faces melting into nothing. She would wake up screaming. Eventually, she learned to swallow her screams, although she never stopped having nightmares.

A certain kind of insomnia developed in Katya, a fear of sleeping and the dreams it would bring. If she just stayed in her bed, eventually exhaustion would claim her and the nightmares came anyway. So, she often slipped out of her window and walked around Teufel Town. In well-lit parks and along busy roads, Katya could walk and think without sleeping. She slowly accrued a wardrobe fit for such nighttime excursions: nothing fancy, but serviceable, inexpensive clothing. The sunrise became familiar to her, an alarm telling her it was time to return home. Only Rosie the housekeeper clucked in concern over the dark circles ever-present under Katya's eyes.

Rosie Sharp, hired when Katya was seven, was the one positive constant in Katya's life. A caretaker and a friend, it was she who worried over the young girl, and tried to draw Katya out of her tired shell. They read together, ate together, played hide and seek. (Rosie always hid somewhere easily found until an eight-year-old Katya stamped her foot and demanded fair play.) As she slowly opened up, word games became Katya's favorite and she insisted on speaking important things in pig Latin, the only language a young Katya found amusing, much to her tutors' despair. It became their secret language, in their country of two. And so, the housekeeper became a mother figure, as much as a hired person could.

As the months rolled by and Katya continued to grow, her tutors changed with more frequency. She learned quickly and well, finding the best worlds within her books. But still, Katya became aware that her life was not a normal one. Normal young girls didn't have nightmares daily; they had friends, they had fathers in more than just name, and at night, she imagined they slept deeply, dreamless, idyllically. She longed to meet these other girls, to have friends instead of tutors. Slowly, the girl became more withdrawn again, starved for contact with people her own age. Concerned, Rosie suggested asking her father to enroll Katya in Rosaline Academy. With her help, Katya asked and was granted her desire. And now, it is her first year in the Academy and she has just turned 13.

VHome/Financial Status:
The Manning family is upper class, wealthy. Currently, they live in a medium-sized estate (3 stories) in the Anna district. The Manning family currently employs 1 live-in housekeeper, 1 cook, 1 part-time maid, and 1 part-time gardener.
Katya's bedroom is on the second floor, and decorated in the same gaudy style as the rest of the house. She hates it, but at least the bed is comfortable.

User Image

VAppearance:
Katya is not a terribly fashionable person, but she tries, pouring over magazines to find the best looks. Even still, she has a hard time matching clothing pieces to form an outfit and make-up is still a mystery to her. However, Katya does have a fondness for earrings, having stretched her lobes to 0g. To be perfectly frank, she likes the funny sting caused by the stretching and plans on going even larger one day.
One thing she will never compromise on is the practicality of all of her dresses having pockets.

VLanguage: Pig Latin

VDesires: I don't want to dream anymore.
Katya feels as though her near-constant nightmares are the biggest hindrance in her life. They frighten her, rob her of sleep and make her all too aware of her own mortality. They lurk in the shadows of her mind even when she is not asleep. She just wants to live a normal life, doing normal high school things. And not have nightmares or this fear. If she can conquer them, it's the beginning.

VEmblem: They pity the ill and the invalids

VWeapon: Needles

VType of Magic:

>Negation: [defensive] dreams and illusions hold no place in Katya's heart. She can negate illusion magic or block a spell completely.

>Hospital Prison: [defensive] her needles can interlock around her, forming a barricade against attack. Alternatively, they can encase others as well, both protecting and trapping.

>Needle Rain: [offensive] hundreds of thin needles fall from above, piercing an enemy and leeching their life to Katya.
