The Pokémon research facility run by Professor Hemlock. Here at the Pokémon lab, the Professor studies Pokémon along with his assistants and also does the important job of distributing starter Pokémon to new trainers. Specializing in Pokémon breeding, Professor Hemlock is particularly interested in baby Pokémon and spends much of his time observing and caring for the little infants alongside his assistants, Teddie, Freddy and Betty.
The Pokémon that Professor Hemlock has to distribute to new trainers are as follows:
[In addition to your starter, every trainer also receives a Pokédex, a Z-Ring, and five Poké Balls. You don't need to wait for a crew member to RP the Professor, so you can RP him and get your Pokémon yourself. You DO need to have had your profile approved by a mod first though, so please keep that in mind]
Laram breathed in the smells of the new region as he sauntered up to the lab's front door. He had no idea what to expect, but after five different people in town mentioned this place, his curiosity got the better of him. He stretched his legs, back, and neck. After the long boat ride, his body had gotten pretty stiff. Craning his neck, he eyed his Rufflet circling in the sky. This was their usual custom. Zeus stayed up high, allowing him a bird's eye view giving advance warning to Laram of impending dangers that he couldn't see on the ground. Laram waved him off, letting the Pokémon know that he was going indoors. Zeus would rather stay with Laram, but they needed to stay on guard. If things went south, Laram could function better inside than his best friend. He was more at home on the warm air currents high up. Sighing to himself, Laram knocked on the front door and adjusted his pack on his shoulders. It was his bad habit when he got nervous.
"Somebody's at the door!"
"What? Betty, you get it. I have my hands full here.
"I don't? This Froakie won't take his shot. He keeps turning invisible on me."
"Well I'm dealing with this egg. Teddie, you get the door."
"I outrank you."
"What does that have to do with anything? Wait, there's no ranking system! Just get the door."
The sigh could be heard through the door, as well as the scuffle from within. He was about to walk away when the door opened, revealing a tall, bearded man with an "I'm so done with this" look on his face. "How can I help you young man?"While the man seemed a bit unkempt, his tone and demeanor were kind."Well, I am new to this region, and everyone in town pointed me in this direction."As Laram was explaining, he saw a shimmer of movement pass through the man's legs and out the door. Out of instinct, he plucked it from the ground and lifted it up arm's length away from his face. As he did, a small frog seemed to appear out of thin air and eyed him quizzically. It seemed confused that the young man could have done what he did. A smile crept onto the professor's face and he looked back inside before addressing Laram again."That's the first time anyone has been able to catch him so easily. That little guy is known as the Tiny Terror around here. This is my lab son. While you are a little older than most that come here looking for their first Pokémon; you seem to be made of good stock. Usually, I let the children choose who they want their first partner to be, but I'd like you to do me a favor. Take that little guy with you. You will be able to handle him better than we can. He has more energy than we can handle. As a thank you, I'll let you take our newest egg with you. Freddie, bring me the new egg, and a Pokédex!"
Laram stood dumbfounded, with a small frog Pokémon in his arms, as the professor closed the door. After a few moments and some incomprehensible words, the door opened again, and he physically spun Laram around and opened the top of his pack. Noticing it's contents the professor whistled."Your pack looks like you've been on the road a while. It seems like I made a good choice with you. Here is your Pokédex, and some Pokéballs to catch some more. Here's the egg. I'm going to stick it in your back compartment to keep it safe. I'd recommend you take it easy with that. Well, that's about everything. If you are short on money, make sure to check out the local notice board. There's usually someone that needs help. Good luck, and don't be shy. Let me know when that egg hatches, I'd like to see what it is."He closed the door and left the new trainer alone with, what was now, his new Pokémon. They both stared at each other, not really knowing what to do. Both of them were pushed in to the situation. Laram shrugged as Zeus flew out of the sky and landed on his shoulder.
"This is Zeus, I'm Laram. You're welcome to come with us if you want. Of course, if you don't, I won't force you."Laram placed the small frog onto the ground and waited for his answer. The little, blue frog looked at Laram, then back at the lab. After a short contemplation, he nodded to himself and then back to his new trainer. For better or worse, he decided to bet on this new person. After all, the assistants in the lab were no challenge, and the young man seemed to be better suited for combat. After it was decided, Laram smiled and adjusted his pack on his shoulders again. This time, he was a lot more careful. There was new cargo in there."He was right, we don't have any money. I think I saw a shop as we were coming here. Let's try there."Zeus took off into the sky, and Laram and his new Froakie walked off in the direction of the shop. *Exit*

Regal's brow furrowed as he looked over the town map his Porygon had pulled up for him on his Pokégear. According to the device, this was indeed the Pokémon Lab that everyone had been directing him to. It didn't look anything like the other research facilities that he had been to over the years, though. It was much smaller, and there didn't seem to be security of any kind watching over the building. Perhaps things were just more lax in this region? It really didn't matter in the end, so Regal just shrugged his shoulders and knocked on the door.
"Hey! Someone's at the door!"
"Go open it, then! I'm busy!"
"I'm busy, too! Get Teddie to open it!"
"Don't you go pushing it off on me!"
Regal scratched the back of his head nervously as he listened to the bickering on the other side of the door. Luckily, he wasn't kept waiting for long. The door opened up to reveal an older, bearded man wearing a lab coat. The professor, no doubt."Good afternoon. Can I help you with something?"
"I'm hoping so, sir." Regal responded. "My name is Regal, Regal Bastion. I just arrived in this region, and all the locals recommended that I head to the lab here and speak with the Professor. I hope I haven't caught you all at a bad time."
"It's not a bad time at all." Replied the professor. "I'm Professor Hemlock, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Regal. Please, come inside." The older man ushered Regal into the building, which was much more impressive on the inside, and listened to the young man's request. It was quite unusual for someone to begin their first adventure when they were almost in their twenties, but thankfully the Professor was tactful enough not to pry. After being set up with a Pokédex and Z Ring, Regal was shown to where the starter Pokémon were held, and he took his time looking over them before choosing his partner.
"My grandfather would be proud." Regal commented as he locked eyes with a feisty looking Charmander. The look the lizard Pokémon gave him was all the prompting he needed. "He was a pretty well known fire type trainer in his day." Taking the Pokéball in his hand, Regal released his new partner and introduced himself, much to the approval of Professor Hemlock.
Caroline wandered in, literally wandered in. "Hello?" She said absentmindedly, ignoring Regal. He was obviously an aide to the professor and she decided that she could find them alright on her own. But it seemed like Professor Hemlock was busy! With- oh he wasn't an aide. She supposed it was never too late to go on a childhood adventure. "Anyways-" she poked an actual aide. "Hello, I need help with the stuff. And the things."
"Huh?" The aide turned around to see the fourteen year old. "Oh, you're here for your starter. Come over here and pick your starter while I gather your things." He said, leading her to a suspious looking box before wandering into the back. Caroline didn't know most of the Pokemon there. Obviously she knew the Alola ones, being from there herself, and her mother had made sure she knew the Kanto starters. The girl already knew what it was like to ride a Charizard (best take your daughter to work day ever.)
Both of her parents liked fire types. For her mother, it was just for her starter and dear old dad considered himself a fire specialist. What wouldn't they like?
She grabbed the Poke Ball holding a Rowlet. "Yes..."
Caroline sent out the small grass owl thing. He was definitely cute and she sent out her Salandit to see how they would get along. Sullie sniffed the other boy and nodded. The Rowlet looked spooked and fluffed up his feathers up a ridiculous amount. "Heh, okay lil dude. You'll do. Casper? Or is that too easy of a nickname?"
"Technically he's still a flying type, Rowlet's only become part ghost in their final form: Decidueye." The aide explained, handing over a Pokdex, three Poke Balls, and a Z-Ring.
"What? How? These things are rare!"
The aide gave a polite shrug. "Trace elements of the material used to make the Z-Rings can be artificially created in a lab under the proper circumstances." He answered while Caroline slipped on the ring. She could get used to this. Oh technology, you beautiful creature you. The girl left before the aide could drone on any more.
Sneering delightfully at the building in front of him, the black jacketed male pulled his hands from his jacket's pockets, looking upon the place with a fresh set of red eyes. So this was the place? The Blume Town laboratory, where the man could take a new partner in crime?
It didn't impress him, not as much as he would've liked it to impress him, but he had bigger tastes than just a quaint little laboratory. Showcasing his first impression would lead to a very mixed response from the professor, he was sure, so he put on the best smile he could, while throwing his purple scarf around his neck, so it wouldn't hang down in front of his chest. It was painful to smile like this, that was sure.
"You look like you might have a stroke, bro" A smaller voice spoke from down below, whereas the human's eyes immediately shot downwards to the yellow headed, saggy pants'd bipedal. Their eyes met for a second, and despite initial response, Tori felt himself sneer again, as the tiny guy below him did so in turn.
Of course, despite Tori hearing it in terms of a bunch of cries placed together that a Scraggy may make, he had a feeling he should take that as an insult. And yet, despite that, he felt almost proud of the little guy for doing such, even if the insult wasn't fully understood. "Leave it for the battlefield, Kitanai, for Ragnarok has yet to descend upon this mortal folly quite yet! Ha ha ha!" The blackette responded back, a smirk on his face, and a laugh to his pace.
The little bipedal beside him gave out a sigh, and shook his head. "Whatever you say, Tori." Yet, it seemed Tori had ignored this and headed inside. The bipedal placed a pair of blue headphones that were around his neck onto his ears, and listened to a very curious rock melody that seemed out of place for the current year. Yet, all the same, he turned it up and walked in behind him.
With a one track mind, Tori grinned to the assistant's aide that stood in front of him. With his right arm extended out and his elbow angling to the left with his hand, while Tori's left arm did a similar mirrored action, and with his mouth already curved upwards the way he wanted it, his pose was complete. "Docta'! I have come to claim my newest partner from the jaws of hell itself! I shall settle for nothing less than the fiery tempest of onslaught that resides underneath this roof!"
The aide stared for a moment at the posing man. Rather than just letting him decide his starter, the aide decided to grab the Fire type he had at the ready, since that seemed to be what he was interested in. "Right... you're here for your starter. Sure... this is what is known as Fennekin. Known as the fox Pokemon, it-"
"A servant of the flames most befitting for me; a sly fox to go with the guardian of the underworld, Kitanai!" said the posing young man, as he posed to the Scraggy, pointing his way. And yet, the music playing on the little bipedals headphones was too loud to hear, so when he looked up to see the posing Tori pointing his way, all Kita could do was thumbs up.
The aide felt the sweat drip down his face, as he looked at all his assets that the boy would need."Sure... let's go with that. Here's... a bag. It has a Pokedex, a Z-Ring, and three Pokeballs inside. Oh, and uh... here-" he grabbed the closest egg he could find, and the aide merely pushed it into the posing man's arms. "Courtesy of the lab. Now can you leave? You're going to scare the other Pokemon..."
The laughter that ensued from the blackette was close to a mad scientist's, as he sneered. "Oh course! For you have given me the key to Ragnarok itself!" The aide continued to sweat, but thankfully, the blackette left without much convincing. Kita did so once he realized his master was leaving.
Pulling the headphones off, the Scraggy rose a brow. "So. What's inside?" he looked to the Pokeball, to which he crossed his tiny arms in anticipation at the new follower of this madman. Upon Tori's releasing of the Pokemon, a tiny fox immersed itself into flames, for merely a moment, before looking up to her new master.
And proceeding to go blue in the face upon realizing that she had been taken from home. "W-Where am I?" she squeaked out nervously, looking up to the jacketed, smirking man, as well as across to the beady-eyed, saggy-pants'd bipedal.
Another laugh echoed from Tori's throat before he spoke in a booming voice, that even the Lab could still hear. "Welcome aboard, spawn of Logi! My name is Torikki! I shall be the guide through this twisted mortal plane! Be it known! I shall name you-"
"Here it comes."
"Majikku! Magic thief, and producer of the underworld flames!"
"Basically, he's your trainer. I'm so sorry for you."
The fox looked up to the man, and looked down, her timid eyes barely able to make eye contact with those ruby globes that gazed back. However, Tori noticed this, and undoing the scarf on his neck, placed the purple scarf around Fennekin's, wrapping it around her.
"Do not be afraid, Majikku. I promise to protect all who come under my tutelage, for I am Torikki Matsuta! The Master of Tricks."
Even Kita made a bit of a smile at that. This guy could be sweet, when he wanted to be, with crossed arms, he gave a shrug, and spoke to Majikku yet again. "You could always do worse though, I suppose." The fox's eyes began to well up, as she sniffed the scarf she was given.
Regaining his composure, Tori began to laugh to the sky, as he went on his way. "Kitanai, Majikku! Let us be off! Ragnarok's arrival is nigh!" and with that, the fox and the bipedal both nodded, while Tori carried the incubator, their first destination being Route 1.

Bravery is not the absence of fear...
Matthias strode up to the door of the lab with the confidence that came from years of overcoming hardship. Here was a young boy who not only knew exactly what starter he wanted, but even knew what type of Pokémon he wanted to specialize in. Matthias planned to specialize in dark type Pokémon. Often misunderstood, many people considered them to be vicious, malicious, and even downright cruel. Yet Matthias had cared for several dark types back in Goldenrod City, and had never found them to be any more or less cruel than any other Pokémon.
Of course he also planned to uphold the legacy of his adopted father, but that was besides the point. Now was the time to begin his journey. Stepping up to the door, the boy looked down to his Pawniard companion before knocking. "You ready for this Blade?" The young Pawniard nodded and Matthias knocked ont he heavy wood door. On the other side, he heard the muffled sounds of people arguing before the door finally opened.
A wise looking man opened the door and greeted Matthias with a smile. "Ah you must be here for your starter Pokémon." The man waved Matthias in and guided him inside before continuing. "I'm Professor Hemlock, I'm in charge of helping trainers just like you get started on their journeys." Matthias' heart was pounding as he listened to the professor speak, it was so exciting to finally get the chance to follow his dream.
As they approached a long table, Professor Hemlock indicated a row of Pokèballs and gave Matthias another smile. "Here are all the starter Pokèmon I have available, please take your pick from among them." Moving with purpose, Matthias immediately selected Litten, a fire Pokémon form the Alola region. "This is my choice professor."Professor Hemlock was a bit surprised at how decisive the young boy was. "Why Litten, you didn't even glance at any of the others." Matthias chuckled at the mans surprise. "I'm going to become a dark-type Pokémon specialist. I know Litten won't become a dark type until it evolves, but for now, its fire matches the one I have in my heart!"
Professor Hemlock was impressed by the determination he saw in the boys eyes, and the fire too. "Very well then, don't let me keep you!" After giving Matthias his Pokèdex, Pokèballs, and z-ring, the Professor waved him out the door to begin his journey. "You take care now, and be a good friend to that Litten!" Matthias waved back to the professor as he walked out into the town. "I will! Thank you Professor!"

But rather the courage to face that fear and overcome it.
Laram allowed himself to be led into the lab that he had never seen the inside of before. The last time he was here, he never got past the front step. The young trainer felt some slight nostalgia, but Betty's voice cut off the feeling."The last time you were here, you were kind of rushed off before we could show you around. But I need your help with something while the professor is away running errands. I just want you to help me corral these Pokemon and keep them occupied until he comes back. The playground is back through that door. Just don't break anything and we'll do fine. This shouldn't take more than a couple of hours."Laram didn't really know how or why he allowed this person to rope him into their problem, but he figured he probably owed them. After all, Shadow was a valued companion, and this was where he came from. The trainer sighed and released his Pokemon onto the playground. He figured they might as well be able to have some fun while they were there. His Pokemon looked at him quizzically, and he nodded his approval to all of them. To which they all darted off in every direction to play with the other Pokemon.
Laram sat under a tree and chuckled as some of the Pokemon there got into some play fights with his Pokemon. It was very obvious that they treated his Pokemon differently than they did themselves. It seemed as if they were more curious about them being under the care of a trainer. The trainer could tell that these tussles weren't anything serious, and he knew that his Pokemon could handle themselves. He took the time to scan all the Pokemon there. It took some time, seeing none of them would sit still for very long. During his time babysitting them, he noticed a group of Chimchar and Grookey bullying a Chimchar in their group."Hey! All of you stop that!"Laram rushed into the group and put himself in between the attackers and the victim. He stared down each and every one of the monkey Pokemon until they gave up and shuffled away, wrestling with each other the whole way. Once the trainer was sure that they were gone, he turned around and knelt down to console the Chimchar they were attacking."You okay Bud? They weren't pulling any punches were they?"The Pokemon looked up at the trainer, sadness and pain in his eyes. Laram's heart lurched in his chest, and he immediately felt kinship with the fire monkey. He pulled out a potion from his pack and tended to the wounds Chimchar had received. As he did, Laram's Pokemon showed up around him, and the Pokemon cowered underneath the trainer's leg. Laram chuckled, and patted his head."It's okay. They won't hurt you. They're friends of mine."The Pokemon looked up at the trainer, scared. But Laram nodded reassuringly. The little monkey gingerly greeted the Pokemon around him, and almost immediately began playing with them. The group ran off and continued playing for the remainder of their time there. After a few hours, the Professor returned, thanked Laram and his team, and payed him some money for his troubles. Laram thanked them, received directions to the beach and left. As he was leaving, he noticed Chimchar chasing after him and his team until he was scooped up by Betty. He could tell from Chimchar's eyes that he desperately wanted to go with them. But Laram was sure he was promised to another trainer. So he swallowed the lump in his throat and made his way to Blume Town Beach.
Laram kicked the dirt from the bottom of his boots before knocking on the door. The Professor answered, looking incredibly scruffy and tired. The man looked as if he had no sleep the night before."Oh good, you're early. Come on in."Laram followed the Professor inside, listening to him explain that Betty asked for a personal day, and he wanted Laram to fill in for her. "In return, I'll pay you for the day."Laram agreed, and the Professor handed him a list of things that he needed to do for that day. It was a pretty hefty list, and looked more than the trainer could handle on his own. But he figured the best thing he could do was just to start on it and work hard. The first item on the list was letting all the Pokemon out into the playground and feeding them. So Laram searched around until he found the food and Pokemon. He let them all free and corralled them into the courtyard, to which they eagerly followed. Once he was sure everyone was outside, he, along with his entire team, fed them all. They seemed content to play outside, so Laram just let them all stay there while he looked at the next item on his list. It was cleaning up after them, inside the lab. The trainer sighed, and asked his Pokemon to keep an eye on things while he dealt with the mess. Once back inside, the trainer located the cleaning supplies and began washing down where all the Pokemon slept.
A couple of hours of scrubbing later, the trainer dropped the brush into the wash bin. Their sleeping quarters were spotless, and Laram was covered in grime and sweat. He didn't have much time to adjust to his circumstances because the Professor walked in with another task."Oh, Laram, there you are. I need you to come with me and take some notes. Hurry up." The trainer sighed and followed his temporary boss into what looked like his office. Without provocation, the man began speaking and Laram scrambled to find a pen and paper. Half an hour of dictation later, the Professor was finished. Laram handed the man his notes, and noticed that it was time to feed the Pokemon again. He walked back outside, broke up a couple of fights, got some new scratches, and managed to feed them all. He was already tired, but it was only around midday. He sat under the tree he did the day before, and a familiar face stared at him from the branches."Oh, hey there Chimchar. How are you today?" The monkey squeaked in the tree and climbed down next to the trainer. Laram patted him on the head, and the Chimchar smiled with joy."You're a good guy Chimchar. I'd love to stay and play with you, but I need to get back to work."
The trainer stood up and began walking back inside, but Chimchar refused to leave him, frantically following behind. The trainer smiled. "You want to help me out? Sure. Come on."Laram picked the monkey up into his arms and got to work on his next task. The pair finished quickly and moved on to the next one. They continued this pattern for the rest of the day, and Chimchar even helped Laram and his team feed the Pokemon dinner. At the end of the day, Laram, Chimchar, and his team herded the lab's Pokemon back into their sleeping quarters before the Professor called out for him to grab a Pokedex, Z Ring, and some Pokeballs. Laram did so, and handed them to the Professor, who handed them over to a new trainer and her new Pokemon Grookey. Laram smiled and wished her well as she left out the front door."Umm, Professor? What's a Z Ring for?""It holds your keystone, and allows you to use Z Crystals...You should know this, you already have a badge. I gave you one when you got Shadow.""Uhh, I never got one of those.""Oh. Well, just grab one for yourself. It looks like you're done for the day. But I have a proposition for you. Someone broke in to the lab last week and stole some of the Pokemon we have here. I want you to track them down and get the Pokemon back. You can take Chimchar there with you to help out. What do you say?"Laram agreed, and picked Chimchar up in his arms again. He planned on getting some rest, but helping Pokemon came first. He had an idea where he should loook, and headed that way.
"Don't worry guys, you're safe now."Laram quietly clicked open the front door of the lab and allowed the four stolen Pokemon inside. The lab was quiet, everyone was still asleep. Laram ushered the stolen Pokemon to where they slept and helped all of them get in to bed. The trainer chuckled as his team and Chimchar yawned as well. It had been a long night, but Laram wanted to at least get back to King Town before he allowed himself to sleep."Good job getting those Pokemon back."Laram turned around to see the professor standing in the doorway with two cups of coffee in his hand. Once Laram saw them, the man offered one to the trainer, who greatly accepted it."Thanks. They didn't cause too much trouble, but that thief. He'll probably come back."Laram had dealt with the man twice now, and he seemed to be the type of person who would come back to finish a job if it went south. He more than likely had stolen the item he was trying to retrieve last night."We'll deal with that problem as it comes. I'll make sure to let the local authorities know about what happened."
The professor smiled, but he was a little too carefree for Laram's taste."Anyway, let's talk about Chimchar there. I want you to bring him along with you if you please. I can see that he's grown pretty attached to you, and I know you will raise him well. He gets bullied a little too much around here.""Of course I will. If he wants to come with."Laram got down on one knee and held out his hand to the small chimp. They both locked eyes, and the Chimchar smiled.Char! Chimchar!"The chimp exclaimed happily and the pair shook hands."Good. Now that that's taken care of, we need to talk about your team. You are going to have to leave two of them here with me. I'll take care of them until you want them with you...What the?"The professor was cut short by two bright lights emanating from Laram's team."Oh, those two are evolving. Congratulations."Laram watched the forms of his Froakie and Charmander glow and begin to grow and change. After ten seconds, his new Pokemon emerged from the light and nodded to him. "Guys, that's awesome. You're amazing."Laram made up his mind. Until he was sure that the lab was safe, he was going to leave his new Charmeleon and Frogadier behind to protect it. The trainer took the two aside and explained to them what he wanted, they nodded and immediately went on patrol."Okay, Professor, I'll leave Shadow and Firnen here with you for now. I'll take Chimchar and Wimpod with me. I guess I should give you a nickname, huh? How about Sun?"The chimp was happy with the name. Laram grabbed Wimpod's pokeball and left the laboratory, and headed out towards Route 1.

Matthias was a bit nervous, but also excited as he approached the door to the Blume Town lab. As the type of trainer to always do his research ahead of time, he already knew he was looking for Professor Hemlock, and even what types of Pokémon were available. It really comes down to a choice between Litten and Froakie… The rugged looking teenager thought to himself as he knocked sharply on the door with his left hand. His right was fiddling with the single Pokéball on his belt. A long-time friend of his, the Nickit inside was often a calming presence, but while in town he liked to keep his partner-in-crime tucked away safe and sound. … The both end up as dark types by the end of their evolution chains, but there are others of both typings…
While he was deep in thought the door opened and middle-aged man in a lab coat stepped out. ”Yes? Can I help you young man?“ The professor looked down at the boy in front of him, a lot older than most of the kids who came knocking at his door, and much more sharply dressed to. Was I expecting a trainer today? The professor thought as he smiled warmly at the boy.
Matthias looked up with a warm smile of his own and extended his right hand, butterflies in his stomach a bit at having to deal with a new adult. Despite having been adopted a couple of years ago, his instinct was still to fear most adults. Damn it, the counselor told you that it’s just the anxiety messing with you. Just take a breath and introduce yourself. One deep breath later Matthias did exactly that. ”H-hello, Professor Hemlock right? I’m Matthias Valeran, I spoke to one of your assistant about picking up a starter Pokémon today?“
Taking the young man’s hand and giving it a good shake the Professor noticed the bit of a stutter and made sure his demeanor was calm and inviting. Certainly this wasn’t his first time dealing with a nervous trainer. ”Of course of course! Welcome young man, come on in and we will get you sorted.“ A well organized man, the Professor guided Matthias through the lab, giving him the grand tour. He introduced the boy to his three assistants, showed him some of the research they were doing, and even let him hold and play with a couple of the baby Pokémon they were studying, before heading to the back counter with the row of starter Pokémon, all with nameplates and pictures by their respective Pokéballs. ”Now have you given any thought to who you want your new partner to be?“
At first, Matthias’ chest was tight, and his stomach in knots. Stepping through that door with an authoritative adult was damn near giving him a panic attack. However, as the Professor walked him through the lab, Matthias found himself relaxing bit by bit. Far from judging him, criticizing him, or even prying into his personal life, Professor Hemlock simply gushed about his work. Letting out the breath he didn’t even know he was holding Matthias began to calm down as he was shown all around the lab. I like this man, Matthias decided as he gently pet a 3-day-old Pichu. He’s so kind, and so passionate about his work… he kind of reminds me of Dad. Soon enough it was time to choose his starter, and this was were Matthias hesitated. ”Can you tell me a bit about your Litten, and your Froakie?“
Professor Hemlock put a hand to chin for a moment before reaching up to a shelf and grabbing a couple of files. ”Hmmmm well let’s see here. My files say the Litten was born and bred here in the Kimchi region, a very reputable breeder to the north, lovely old couple, I often visit them to study the new babies.“ Flipping to the other file a small frown crossed the professors face as he looked over the papers. “Oh yes I almost forgot about this, Froakie here was rescued from a Team Flare base in the Kalos region, poor little guy was going to sold to the highest bidder in an illegal auction.”
The professor had barely finished explaining when Matthias cut him off. ”I’ll take him.“ His expression was dead-set with determination as he spoke, and he was already reaching for the Pokéball. As he picked up the cold sphere of metal, he heard the professor express concern. ”Are you sure? He’s going to be very scared of people. I’ve been meaning to find a good home for him, but to take him on a journey….“ Matthias nodded as he held the Pokéball in both hands, cradling it as he spoke. ”I’m sure Professor. I grew up on the streets… I know what it’s like to suffer at the hands of others…“
Professor Hemlock looked down at the young man in front of him and saw a wisdom and caring in him that was beyond his years. Any other trainer and he would have insisted on a different partner, but Matthias… Matthias might just be the perfect home for this poor Froakie. ”Well then I guess you’re going to need these.“ Reaching up to the shelves beside him, Professor Hemlock gave Matthias a Pokédex, a z-ring, and 3 fresh Pokéballs. ”You take good care of him for me ok?“ With a nod Matthias took the items, placing the z-ring on his right hand, the Pokédex in his pocket, and the balls away in his pack. ”I won’t let you down Professor. Thank you.“ With a round of goodbyes, and a few more pets for the baby Pokémon, Matthias left the lab in much higher spirits then he had entered it. Not only had the Professor been a wise man, who knew just how to handle an anxious teen, he had granted Matthias a renewed sense of purpose. Taking Froakie’s Pokéball off his belt for a moment he looked close enough to see the silhouette of the Pokémon inside. ”Don’t you worry Froakie, I’m going to take good care of you. Just you wait, you and me, we’re going to show the world that you can’t treat people, or Pokémon, like they are worthless.“ Matthias wasn’t sure if the Pokémon could hear him, but he would soon prove it with the best love and care he could provide.

"So this is the lab. What do you think Dewey?" Quill patted his Dewpider on the back as they took in the view ahead of them. They had just gotten off the boat and were ready to start their new adventure together. Quill had learned about the lab from a few of the locals on the beach. While he enjoyed the water, there was a bit too much sunlight for the pale skinned young adult. He could already feel his skin burning on the back of his neck, and he wasn't happy about it. Not that he was going to complain to anyone about it, he was just irritated. The last thing Quill wanted was anything resembling a burn. "Should we see if anyone is around?" Quill shrugged his shoulders at his Pokemon as he stepped to the front door and knocked. "Hellooo? Anyone home?" Quill listened as he heard what sounded like a large creature clamoring around inside. Then, everything went silent for a few moments. He was about to knock again when a large man in a lab coat opened the door. "Hello? How can I help you, son?"
The man looked sleepy, it was mid day, and Quill was sure that running a laboratory took a lot out of a person. The new trainer chuckled and scratched the back of his head. "Sorry to bother you sir. But I just got off the boat and this is my first time in this region. Somebody on the beach pointed me in this direction. I'm not exactly sure why I am here though." Quill put up his hands in a submissive manner as he gave his statement. He wanted to let the man know that this wasn't totally his idea. Right..right. They always do that. Come in lad." The man turned around and entered the building without another word. Quill wasn't sure what to do, but he humbly followed. As he did, the man introduced himself as Professor Willow. He went on to talk about how he was a Pokemon professor, and this was his lab where he conducted research. Apparently, he normally had three assistants helping him, but they had all come down with some virus named after an adult beverage that Quill hadn't been allowed to have yet. He mentally shrugged at the news, it didn't really have anything to do with him.
"Let's see, what am I looking for? Ah! Right." The man sifted through haphazard piles, grabbing objects unknown to Quill. Where are those...Ah!" The professor snatched three capsules from the top of a desk as he made his way further into the lab. "I think that's everything. Right, here's the hard part. Now you have to make a decision. Out there, is your new Pokemon partner. You can choose any one of them, but make sure you choose one that is suitable for you." The professor indicated out a window to a play area behind the laboratory. Quill peeked out, and recoiled immediately. There were Pokemon out there, and they were playing. Normally, that wouldn't bother him, but there was a group of fire Pokemon playing, and some that were bullying a poor little Piplup. It was like the embers were encroaching on the little bird's space, and it was more and more terrifying for the creature. But not as much as as for Quill. He clutched his head and sunk to the ground hyperventilating. He sat there, unable to hear the Professor's questions, as fear and dread gripped his heart. He was taken back to a night when he was twelve years old. The worst night of his life. All he could see were flames, engulfing everything around him.
Just as he was about to spiral, he felt a leg touch his knee as Dewey climbed into his lap. The little spider concentrated, and the bubble around his head expanded to cover himself and his friend. Quill felt the cool water surround him and his breathing began to slow and become more regular. It took a couple of minutes, but with his Dewpider's help, Quill calmed down enough to answer the professor. "Sorry. You were saying?" Quill wanted to continue as if nothing happened. "Uh..Right. Anyway, I was telling you to pick your Pokemon partner." The professor scratched his head awkwardly as he stared at the young man. Quill gingerly stood up and peered through the window again. This time, the scene was slightly different. They were still trying to pick on the Piplup, but now there was a Chespin standing between them, arms outstretched. It was taking all of the abuse from the group with its' back turned, smiling at the Pokemon it was protecting. That struck a cord in Quill's heart as he qazed at the scene. "That one. He's coming with me." The professor raised an eyebrow as he looked out the window where Quill was pointing. He shrugged his shoulders.
"To each their own, I guess. *ahem* I mean, that's a fine choice son. Chespin is a great Pokemon." The professor walked outside, broke up the group, and placed Chespin into a Pokeball and brought him back inside. Quill accepted the Pokemon and everything else the professor offered him. "That is everything a new trainer needs to get started, plus a little something from me. That's a special ring that Pokemon can use Z moves and mega evolve with. Make me proud." Quill and Dewey were shuffled out the door, and it was closed behind them. "Okay...that was weird. What now?" Quill asked his Pokemon and both just shrugged their shoulders at him. They were just as lost as he was.
The sun was shining bright overhead as Yukiko knocked on the doors of the research lab. She wasn't sure why, but her mother had insisted that she stop by to introduce herself to the professor after getting off the ship from Olivine City. It wasn't as if it was out of the way, so she had no reason not to. Her adventure had to start somewhere, after all. Jasmine was perched on her shoulder, with her big, fluffy tail tickling the back of Yukikos neck. She wasn't sure what to expect either, but the curious Pokémon was eager to see what happened next.
To Yukikos surprise, Professor Hemlock opened the door himself and welcomed her inside to give the new trainer the grand tour. Apparently her mother had called ahead and informed the professor that her daughter would be arriving to begin her trainer journey in an unfamiliar region and was hoping that he could help get her started. It was a bit embarrassing to have her mother trouble him, but the older man just laughed at Yukikos apology and brushed it off with a wave of his hand.
"Helping new trainers take their first step is part of my job, Yukiko." He reassured her. "It's really no trouble at all."
He then proceeded to hand the new trainer a small box containing some items he had prepared for her. Inside, Yukiko found a Pokédex for recording information on the Pokémon she would encounter on her journey, as well as some Pokéballs for rounding out her team. Finally, there was a bracelet that the Professor explained was for using something called Z Moves. After slipping it on and stowing away the other items, Hemlock lead Yukiko over to a different area of the lab that had all kinds of rare starter Pokémon playing with each other so that she could pick one to take with her.
"I can really pick whichever one I want?" The girl questioned. "Aren't these guys supposed to be really rare?"
"These Pokémon are specially bred and raised for new trainers to take them on their journey." The professor explained. "As long as you raise them with the proper care they deserve, you're more than free to take your pick."
It didn't take very long for Yukiko to make her choice. The girl had barely started looking when a cheery looking Chikorita approached her on its own to play with her and Jasmine. She had been planning to pick a grass type anyway, so it worked out perfectly. She named the little cutie Angelica and, together with Jasmine, the trio thanked Professor Hemlock for all of his help and left together to go explore the rest of Blume Town. There was a beach, a park, and even a little cafe to enjoy, so their first day was sure to be a fun one.
Asher tugged at the straps on his backpack. It had been a long boat ride to the Kimchi region and he wanted to stretch his legs a bit. He had walked around the new town stopping only to chat with a few locals about the area and what there was to offer. A few of them had mentioned a Pokemon laboratory where a kindly professor helped new trainers start their journeys. That sounded interesting to him. While he did have his faithful companion Radar, he was always on the lookout for new Pokemon to aid him in his quest to become a licensed Pokemon ranger. He knew he was a little old to "start his Pokemon journey", but many people had mentioned that the professor helped people of all ages and backgrounds.
"Should we go see what this professor and his lab are all about?" Asher motioned to his Shinx to see what the cub thought about his plan. The little blue Pokemon nodded and squeaked his affirmation back at his trainer. Asher smiled in return. He knew that whatever the plan was, he could count on Radar to have his back. The pair stopped a police Jenny and asked her for directions to the Pokemon lab. She pointed in the general vicinity and said that the lab was at the top of a hill. "It's at the top of a hill on the edge of town, you can't miss it." Asher thanked her and headed off in that direction.
The building mentioned came in to view and Asher climbed the hill to the front door. There were Pokemon playing in the front, and Asher politely waved as he knocked on the front door. He heard a shuffling sound from within before the front door swung open, revealing a rugged looking man that looked like he had just woken from a nap. Yawning, he addressed the young man in front of him. "How can I help you?""I hope I haven't caught you at a bad time. A few locals mentioned this place and said you helped trainers just starting out. I'm new to this region, and was hoping to get a map of some kind."
The Professor waved him in, opening the door wider so that the boy could step through. "Sure sure. Follow me." Professor, trainer, and Pokemon weaved their way through the lab, sidestepping piles of books and other items strewn about within. After rounding a corner, the professor grabbed a small box and handed to Asher. "Here you go son. That box contains a Pokedex, a Z Ring, and five Pokeballs. Everything a new trainer needs to get started. As for a map... The professor rummaged around with some scrolls of paper and pulled out a medium sized parchment that was a little old, and a little dusty. "It's old, but it still has all the cities, major landmarks, and routes on it." Asher was busy stowing the items from the box. but thanked the professor and accepted the map from him. "Now for the most important part. Picking a partner. I see that you already have a Shinx with you, but I breed certain Pokemon specifically to help new trainers. These guys have a mild temperament, but grow up to be strong allies for your journey. Follow me."
Once again, Asher was lead through the building, but this time, out the back. The professor placed a pokeball in the new trainer's hand and motioned to the area in front of them. "There are no wrong choices, but make sure that they choose you as well. Mutual trust is very important in the bond between Pokemon and trainer. Go. ahead, pick any one of the Pokemon running around out here." Asher nodded and gripped the capsule in his hand as he stepped forward. There were so many Pokemon running around and playing. The options before him were staggering. He knew that he wanted something with a relatively calm demeanor. Nothing too wild. But also something that had the tools to help his lifestyle as a Pokemon ranger. He hummed and hawed so much that ten minutes had passed without him moving. As he was trying to make his decision, a friendly looking Bulbasaur walked up and looked at him quizzically. Bulbasaur. That was a Pokemon that had many ways of subduing or pacifying wild Pokemon. Asher knew that Venusaur were particularly passive in the wild, and mainly kept out of trouble. Not too aggressive, well equipped for work, a calm attitude. It's perfect. Asher knelt down and rubbed the head of the little green Pokemon, who smiled at the attention. This Pokemon was exactly who he was looking for. "Hi there, I'm Asher. This is Radar. Do you want to come with us and help people?" The Bulbasaur looked puzzled for a moment, but then nodded yes and extended a vine. Asher shook it, and the bond was made. He tapped the pokemon with the pokeball, only to register it, and immediately released him. "I think I'll call you Briar.
"Good choice. Bulbasaur are easy to raise. Now, most trainers take part in the gym challenge, and Kimchi has their own. I believe the closest gym is in Nix City. But it might not be a bad idea to explore the area around Blume town. There is quite a large variety of Pokemon. Good luck." The professor shook Asher's hand before reentering his lab. Left alone, Asher wasn't sure what to do. He looked at his new pokedex. He knew that they were basically encyclopedias of knowledge on Pokemon. It was a useful tool. He tested it out by scanning Bulbasaur and Shinx, quickly glancing through their information. He knew there was a beach nearby and decided to go there first.

A small yawn escaped Mila's lips as the young girl walked around Blume Town. The excitement from her first boat ride combined with the nerves of leaving home for the first time had made resting almost impossible the night before, and now the lack of sleep was starting to catch up with her. She was too excited to sleep yet though, with curious eyes darting to and fro as Mila took in her new surroundings. Blume Town was a whole lot smaller than her hometown of Lumiose City, but the atmosphere was definitely more pleasant. It was much quieter than back home, and sported all kinds of lush greenery and vividly colored flowers.
"It's like something out of a postcard..." She quietly murmured to herself as she stopped to look around again. Before she'd left home, Mila's caretaker at the orphanage had advised her to meet with the local professor to help set the girl up for her journey throughout the region. It was a logical place to start, though Mila didn't see anything that jumped our to her as a research facility. Thankfully, an elderly couple passing by was kind enough to give the girl some directions.
"The professor's lab can be found at the top of that hill over there." The gentleman said while pointing it out for her. "Just a short walk away."
Thanking them for the help, Mila let Taxi out of his Pokéball and climbed onto the Skiddo's back as the duo took off for the lab. The warm sun and floral scents had the grass type in high spirits as it carried her over to meet the professor, who she found just outside the facility tending to some of the younger Pokémon.
"Always nice to help someone start their journey." He said cheerfully after the introductions had been made. He handed her a small box containing an assortment of items, including some Pokéballs, a Pokédex, and a funny looking bracelet he called a Z Ring. Even more generously, the professor also offered Mila to take her pick from his selection of Pokémon to take with her.
"No need to be modest." The Professor reassured her as he led the girl to the back of his lab. "The young ones here are bred specially to journey with new trainers, after all. All I ask is that you raise whichever Pokémon you choose with care."
It wasn't an easy decision, but Mila quickly had her mind made up after being approached by a young Fennekin who offered her a twig as a peace offering before curling itself up around her foot. It was cute, and warm and friendly, which ticked all the boxes on Mila's checklist. Scooping up the little fox in her arms, the new trainer asked the fire type if it would like to come with her, to which it playfully yipped its reply.
"Sounds like a yes to me." Mila said with a rare smile on her face. "Nice to meet you... Twig."

The Takahashi Siblings

Sam walked towards the lab with a twin in each arm, trying not to pant from the exertion. At seven years old both kids were still small enough to be picked up but not so small that they werent heavy to carry for long distances. Still he couldnt bring himself to wake them up when they hadnt been able to sleep soundly through the night. The only way to the Kimchi region was by boat and after their parents had...never come back from an accident at sea neither child was that thrilled about that. To be honest Sam wasnt either. He hadnt slept at all during the boat ride even after both of the twins had knocked out. Hed sat staring at his baby siblings and trying to keep his breathing even as the sea rocked the boat. Getting off the boat had been a relief, the new region looking even more promising and free because it meant they were on solid land again. Sam hadn't really bothered to get to know the town, finding instead the nearest lodging an renting a room to take a power nap before starting his trek to the lab. The twins had still been knocked out and he hadn't had it in him to wake them and so here he was carrying two seven year olds. Getting to the lab however, he realized he needed his hand to knock. "Mimi..Leo" he whispered down to them jostling a little bit. "wake up come on kiddos" Mia woke up first making a sleepy sound and opening her eyes. She nudged her twin who gave a hum and his own eyes only a shade darker than hers openned as well. "I need to put you guys down okay?" "Okay Sammy" Mia answered. Leo for his part only nodded. With permission granted, Sam put down the twins, stretching out his arms before knocking on the laboratory door. "Well hello there" Both twins took a step behind their brother making Sam sigh inwardly. It was customary of Leo to hide behind him being the shiest of the twins but Mia never did this. "Good morning sir" Sam said bowing his head. At the same time he reached behind him to put a hand atop each kid's head. "Sam Takahashi I'm here for my starter pokemon?" The proffesors eyes went to the twins softening as they took them in before going back to Sam. "Ah yes of course" he said letting them in "right this way" Sam walked in with his siblings behind him, Leo stuck to his side one hand clinging to his pant leg. Mia however couldn't help herself when she saw the baby pokemon eyes lighting up as she gave a soft gasp at the adorable creatures. "Mia, we look with our eyes"Sam said keeping a hold of her. Nice as it was to see her come out of her shell a little and be a bit more like herself, the last thing they needed was for one of the twins to break something. "Thats quite alright Sam" the proffesor said, "Why don't I show you some of the baby pokemon" "Sammy can we?" Mia asked doing her best puppy eye pout. Sam smiled nodding, he was never good at saying no that face...to either of them really. Much left after...after all that had happened. Mia smiled again taking the lead as they followed the proffesor to see the pokemon Leo kept to Sams side but Sam saw him looking around, interest growing as they saw the different stations in the lab. "Whats that one? What about that one? Do they stay cute?" Mia asked some of the assistants, making them and the proffesor chuckle. Leo was observing everything and while not as extroverted as his twin did pay attention when her answers were answered. "Now as far as your own pokemon goes" Proffesor Hemlock said now that the siblings were done looking around-and the twins seemed to be more at ease. "Yes sir?" Sam asked blushing a bit when the proffesor waved off the formal tone "Proffesors just fine" he said motioning to a specific station. "These are what we call starter pokemon. We give them to trainers starting off their journey." Sam looked through the different pokemon beckoning for the twins to follow. Whatever pokemon he picked would be traveling with all three of them so it was important that the twins were comfortable with it and vice versa. "What do we think kiddos?" "I like the teddy!" Mia said pointing to the Chespin right away. "The mudkips cool" Leo said quietly but no less determined. Both twins looked at each other and Sam, with ten years of experience in foreseeing a brewing twin conflict kneeled down between them. "We're not taking a pokemon unless you both agree on it" he said firmly. He himself had no real preference. He hadn't been very familiar with pokemon enough to have a favorite type before starting his journey and as of right now all he cared was that he had one that would help him on his journey and maybe protect the twins when needed. Both twins pouted but Mias pout vanished as she saw a green pokemon lounging a bit away. "Kitty!" the little girl exclaimed clapping her hands and going towards it. Never one to be far from his twin, Leo followed. Sam looked as the little boy squatted next to the...kitty pokemon and held out his hand shily "Um.Si-Professor" he said after a look from the older man ."whats that?" he asked as he moved towards his siblings, the proffesor had said all the pokemon here were used to humans and would not harm them but still. "Ah that is a Spirigito, a grass type pokemon" Proffesor Hemlock said smiling as the cat pokemon bumped its head against Leos palm making the little boy smile. "A little capricious they require a lot of attention but the're smart as a whip. Playful too." Sam nodded as he took that in. He would have his hands full with the twins. Maybe a pokemon that needed constant attention wouldn't work for them. Mia turned looking straight at her big brother "Sammy we want this one" she said at the same time Leo added "Please" quietly. Of course. "Alright" he said knowing that when the twins were that in sync they were serious about something "We'll take the Spirigito I guess" Sam said with a slight smile. "Excellent" the proffesor said taking out the pokeball that belonged to the cat pokemon. "With a three person traveling party it'll certainly get enough attention" huh that was one way to look at it."I should mention Sam that every trainer also gets a pokedex, some starting pokeballs and a Z ring" he said handing Sam the items. "Oh..thank you" Sam said then stopped "Um..what..whats a zring?"
One explanation later Sam was walking out of the lab with a starter pokemon and new items. He had also asked the Proffesor where the town was, explaining that with two small children he wanted to find lodgings and maybe find some odd jobs before he took off for his first gym. The proffesor despite not knowing the full scope of just why Sam was in charge of two seven year olds had been very empathetic and pointed him in the direction of Blume town, saying there were always people who needed something done as well as pointing out trainers lodgings. "Take care of yourself Sam. And bring that pokemon back to visit sometime you hear? I like seeing how the trainers I help do from time to time" "Yes sir" Sam had said ducking his head when the proffesor protested the formality again.
He walked out and held out both hands one for each twin to hold. "Alright how bout we go get breakfast" he said as the three siblings walked to town.
