Reap was exhausted. He'd come back from helping to build the wall feeling distraught, wracked with grief over memories taken from him that he hadn't wanted to surrender. He had wandered for a while, feeling as if he'd been lobotomised, seeking for any remnant or thread left behind of that brilliant and shining emotion he'd felt, an emotion that seemed white in the grey, like a light through the fog. The emptiness left an ache that made him want to curl up around it and stop.
And he didn't even know why.
Iron. Iron had been his first thought as he wandered through the ruins, he had to find him. Alone he felt like he was vulnerable, like every crawling scrabbling thing could see his pain and it made him a target.
When he was attacked he wasn't surprised, but gone was the usual easy confidence, instead his self defence was manic and afraid, like a child lashing out rather than a predator on the hunt.

Iron was always hanging around the Ruins.
He liked the junk, and even if it meant dodging the rain, there were plenty of places to go. He was resting under a building, when he saw a distant skirmish- the eerie skittering of a fog creature, and a crash of yellow light.
He followed the trail into a back alley, near two tangled up cars and a wet, rusty dumpster.
The yellow belonged to somebody familiar, sword brought up as one of the many-legged guys reared up, reaching, clutching-
Iron aimed to relieve it of a few digits. By now, the shots were true. Close, but not wild. Half of the reaching arms exploded and curled into nothing, and the creature slunk backwards, limping and low to the ground.

Reap wasn't feeling as resilient as usual, the swipe of claws against him felt far more potent than usual and he wondered if as he became more tangible, more solid, so too would the pain. It was a morbid train of thought and he was glad as shots rang out in a way that seemed to echo from the surrounding buildings.
It was exactly who he needed and he couldn't help the way his heart seemed to leap in his chest.
"Thanks."

"I was in the neighborhood," Iron said with an easy grin, walking closer to make sure the shots got delivered as intended.
I talked to the goddess, he tried to say, but the words got caught in his throat. The words made it seem heavy. Even though he had, and he thought he had the answer, finally. Reap would want to know, wouldn't he?
"They're not so tough on their own. Haven't got the ******** sense to pair up."

"Naw, I guess that's what makes them different to us." He was wary of the emphasis on us, he still had little to no handle on the other man short of that he wanted to work with him and that they were better off as a team than not. It didn't dismiss all the worries that someone else better might come along, most of what Iron had said hinted at the same sort of self-orientated view of the world Reap himself possessed and which kept him going.
But he had an exception, it was just hard to articulate it.
It was as though there was a swell of words gathered up in him, honest things he wanted to say, glad and grateful things. About fear of loss, about purpose, about suspicions, about the memories that had been so very important.
Instead all he managed to say was. "I'm glad you came." And jammed the sword straight through what remained of the twitching erratic creature.

"Yeah," Iron said, and he got the strange feeling that if he had something covering his head, he should take it off.
He bent to gather a trophy.
"I was waiting around for you."

He raised a brow at this, almost suspiciously, he wasn't wired to jump to positive conclusions, as far as he was concerned, Iron was just as likely to have been waiting around to give him bad news as he would have been to simply hang out.
He leant down to pick up the colourful fragments, hardly seeming to pay attention to them.
He intended to make more awkward small talk, but he was never very good at avoiding what he wanted to say. "I met the goddess." he said quietly. "I remembered something good. And she took it away."
He clenched his grip white knuckled on the fragments he held. "Something was right there. Right on the tip of my tongue and it's gone." he gave Iron a wistful, longing look. "But it was important."

"Me too," Iron said. "And the same thing happened. And...there's other stuff, I can't remember it right anymore. I went on...some kind of task. The details are blurry. I didn't give the result to the goddesses. I know that. But I don't have it."
He shook his head.
"s**t just...just gets took anyway."
He looked over at Reap's knuckles. He reached to touch his hand, not knowing why, but he held onto valuable things all the time, his weapons, the objects, and he wanted to hold onto Reap's hand too.
His own hand wasn't quite solid. It mingled in and out.
"I went to ask. About your question. I think...I got it figured out."

Reap listened intently to Iron's recollection of his own encounter with the goddess and found he was deeply chilled at the idea that even if you held onto the memories with everything you were, they would go away anyway. He didn't want to think about it.
He didn't even have to think about the way when his hand was taken that he took Iron's, running his fingertips across his hazy knuckles, his own form more solid than it had ever been. He lingered on the ring finger as if seeking for something before he trailed over.
Shifting his weight he leaned nearer, reassured, safe somehow. "What did you figure out?"

Iron pulled him out from the edge of the roof, closer to the building and out of the rain.
He looked down at their hands, but didn't let go.
"You asked if fighting was all there was. I think...I think it's like this. There's something coming. That makes sense. That's what all this fighting is for. And when it happens, we'll either be prepared, or what we won't be. I won't let you break up. And you won't let me break up. That means something. After that, if we make it, if we're strong..."
He searched his own chest with his free hand, where his heart was a pulsing and complex tangle of colors. Purples, greens, yellows. Branches that knotted and unknotted themselves. His string, with the blue light. Then he tentatively reached to touch Reap's chest, the space where Reap's heart coiled in a rainbow blur, big, and different. Changing, but familiar.
"We won't have to do what they say, it doesn't have to be strong and weak, not if we don't want it to be. We can make the world however we want. Do whatever we want. We'll say what the purpose is. What's good. And we'll..."
He squeezed Reap's hand, getting lost, searching Reap for the rest of the words.

Reap let himself be pulled out of the rain, he hardly registered the sting any more when he wandered through it, the pain was a reassurance, a low level discomfort which had to be borne and tolerated.
He didn't want to let go either.
As Iron spoke, he listened intently, his expression solemn, it made sense that something was coming, the wall seemed to merely be holding at bay some horrible tide, and even at that, just barely. To hear the assurance that the determination to defend went both ways was a reassurance and listening to the other man he could believe that they could make it through whatever else this bizzare world cast their way.
When the glow of his heart was touched, Reap's first instinct - he thought after the fact - should have been to flinch, to protect himself. But he did not. It didn't offend him, for whatever reason that Iron strode into his personal space that way. And he licked his lips, suddenly dry thanks to the odd nervousness that curled around him like this, gathering up his mettle.
"We'll stand."
And he let the instinct draw him in again, let himself unhook their hands onto to reach out and slip his arms around Iron, to press their chests together, as near as he could put the glows that were all they were. It was still like a word on the tip of his tongue, a yearning ache that couldn't be satiated entirely, but here, this close could be eased.
"And I think with you, I could do it. I think we could change everything. I think even the goddesses would be afraid."

The words sent something strange through Iron.
It was like Reap was touching a hole in his memory, and the edges were still ragged. Most of all, he felt pierced with wanting.
When Reap pulled him in, the gesture was sudden and intense. He felt raw. Exposed. Their wasn't much in between their hearts, and the mist that made up his chest wavered, then gave, mixing freely with Reap's.
There was nothing between them. No space, no barrier. Iron felt safer. He locked the word and thought away, in case the goddess came for it, but drew closer to Reap, arms folding around his back and clutching his shoulders. He pressed back.
"I won't leave you behind," Iron said.

There was a twinge of fear that went hand in hand with the sheer intensity of emotion that surged in Reap, it was almost trained into him at this point, strong emotions were fleeting and fragile, simply existing to be stolen away and forgotten. And he didn't want to forget, he didn't want to surrender what little he had. The feeling of mingling, of barriers absent was like a weight lifted off his chest, like he could breathe again.
Twined up with that relief, that liberation was other, lower, more unfathomable emotions, like vague shapes glimpsed through the waters of thought, a sense of danger and laden promise bound up with them. He didn't remember them from any of the things he'd seen.
He clenched his hands as if terrified despite assurances Iron would leave, that he'd be left with that feeling once again that there was simply something forgotten. Ignorant. It was unbearable. The idea of finding himself in a world where he'd never met the other man - where he wandered alone, oblivious and sad while other people leapt upon the far more likeable shade - was harrowing and deeply distressing. Panic simmered in him, dancing on the nerves of those other stranger feelings.
"Please don't." he said, low, quiet and vulnerable. "I feel like I remember. But I don't know if I just wish I did so much I'm convincing myself it's true."
He eyed him, searching and thoughtful. "I just. I feel like its there. If I just.. like.."
Drifting memories, cracks in the surface of the past made him kiss Iron's lips searchingly, as if somehow he could find what both of them were missing by letting the lurking and hazy instincts edge in.
