Location: San Zhi Resort
Images:: x, x, x.
General debriefing: There has been the stirring of something that scares even the locals: a rumour has it that in the evening, the lights turn on several of the odd pod-like buildings. Music can be heard from within before the light flickers off. This investigation must happen, due to this claim, in the evening after dark.
* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 4C. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a INSANITY ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.
1- 20: The darkness combined with the fog make it extremely difficult to navigate. As you move your flashlight against the ground all you see is the crackled pavement, the pods obscured from sight -

- As a skeletal face carved right into the cement leers at you -

- And disappears. It was just your imagination... right?
21 - 40: Tattered pieces of fabric seem to be hanging from a few smashed windows. Upon further investigation you realize it is actually strips of skin peeled off some hapless creature.
41 - 60: You take a look at the pods again. They look normal enough, though none of them have the odd flickering light. Well that's a relief. A strange jarring noise interrupts you and as you look back, the order of the pods have changed, from location to colour.
61 - 80: You hear music playing in the background, a sort of wailing, foreign music. It seems to be coming from right above you, but nothing is there. Only you can hear it.
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- As you continue walking down the sidewalk you hear a large crack, followed by another. A strange gas explodes from underneath, making you extremely dizzy, as you cough to figure out what is going on, fighting for air now. You have exposed your entire team to a hallucinogen, making everything more terrifying than ever as your vision swims and hops uncontrollably and your hearing becomes muted. Something creaks, groans, lurches underneath you, but is that your imagination?

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. AS you can't really see the boss, most of it will have to be dependent on what you can see, if anything at all, from strange faceless figures lurching, half-hopping towards you to the smiling dead coming back and swiping at you. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

* 4 mission reward points for completing this successfully

A certain tiny blonde Sun trainee was currently waiting near the training fields with her arms folded and a dubious frown on her face. When Gale had asked her about accompanying him, Heidi, and Taym on a external mission she'd jumped at the chance, but she also couldn't shake the feeling that she'd just signed up for an express pass for some freaky a** s**t.

Rumors and stories painted very vivid images of the sort of things that typically went down on missions, and if even a third of it was true then they were in for an interesting time, at the very least.

At least the company would be good. She liked Heidi, and Taym, and Gale seemed really nice.

Taym would deny right into the grave that he was ever craving approval from anyone, let alone from someone like Gale, whom he was irrationally biased against solely because Gale was small and dressed nicely. But here he was, ambling up to the training field and drawing up about five feet from Peyton. He didn't say anything--just nodded at her, with a cold professionalism--and took a distracted drag. He was burning through his cigarettes too quickly. He was going to regret this later.

He wasn't exactly ready for this, but he was rapidly learning that doing anything around here wasn't a question of being ready. Just being willing.

Sometimes not even that.

He huddled down into his coat like he was cold even though he could not possibly be, and let his eyes wander the fog.

Another external mission. Hopefully this one turned out better than the last one.

And the one before that.

After letting Tuck know where she was going she was off to the training field, humming cheerfully. Or she was humming cheerfully until she got a good whiff of ugh gross. Heidi's face scrunched up with displeasure as she gave the man a disapproving look. "Gross, dude." Normally Heidi was polite but not when it came to smoking. It was gross.

Heidi shook her head and turned back to Peyton with a smile. "Hey! Sorry if I'm late. Um..so where're we going? Is this..your first external mission?" She asked both Peyton and Mr. Smokey.

Gale's team of assembled trainees, while nice enough, seemed to be relatively competent, a fact he appreciated. From what little he knew of Peyton, she was confident in what she did, and Taym was the sort of type who did things well or not at all (at least, from what Gale knew of him, what with that whole system he'd developed). As for Heidi, Gale knew of her, but not really her personally, but now was a good a time as any to start meeting people.

"Good morning," said Gale, as he stepped towards them, his shooting glasses perched on the top of his head. He gave a small smile to Peyton and Taym, his eyes flickering towards the cigarette, and then stuck out his hand towards Heidi. "I'm Gale, by the way; I don't believe we've met before."

Formal introductions aside, Gale said, "We're heading out to the San Xhi Resort. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the San Xhi Resort was built in 1978 in San Xhi, Taiwan. They were originally intended to be a vacation resort, but the company building them lost their funding, and there were several mysterious deaths while on site. Instead of being destructed, they were just abandoned, which makes a perfect hotspot for suspicious activity."

He gestured for them to follow him, heading into the lighthouse and up the stairs towards the portal.

"It should be a pretty straightforward mission," he said. "There's been some curious things happening around them, so we're being sent to check it out."

Peyton had had a smile all ready for Taym as he walked across the field to join her, but it slipped away as he offered little more then a nod to her in greeting. She narrowed her eyes at him, debating a fitting retort, but Heidi's arrival saved him from any sass that might had been directed his way.

She gave a snort of amusement, then offered the other blonde a bright smile. "Not late, and yeah, unless we're counting the cruise thing." She didn't think that counted. It was certainly a mission, but somehow she got the impression that it was in a class of it's own. "You?"

Gale's greeting pulled her attention around, and turned automatically to face him as he addressed the gathered trainees. Small talk could wait for later.

The tiny Sun was quiet as Gale explained where they were headed and the details of their mission, and it had pale brows inching upwards in a mixture of curiosity and healthy caution. The San Xhi Resort sounded kind of neat, in a Ghost Hunters sort of way.

She fell into step behind Gale as he lead the way to the portals. "Do we have any idea what we might be up against?" 'Curious happenings' wasn't all that informative.

Taym's only reaction to Heidi's comment had been to very deliberately turn his head away from her to exhale, keeping his eyes on her as flatly defiant as a territorial dog. While Gale was talking he licked his fingers, extinguished the smoke, and stuffed the butt into his pocket, and when they headed for the lighthouse he made an exaggerated, wordless "ladies first" gesture at Heidi. Clearly at least one of them was of the taciturn variety.

"This'll be my...third.." Heidi frowned and scratched at her cheek, looking to the side as she recalled her other external mission trips. Yeaaaah..they hadn't gone very well.

When the man made a point to turn his head away to exhale Heidi was pleasantly surprised. He didn't flip out on her or anything. Good, good. But before she could thank him for that a blonde boy arrived and introduced himself. Oh. So this was Gale. Heidi grinned. "I'm Heidi, nice to meet you." She took his hand to shake it before stepping back. She was still grinning though she said nothing as he explained where they were headed off to. Sounded interesting, but then so did all the other places she'd been to.

She followed the group, looking to Peyton when she asked what they were up against. "During both of my external missions my groups have been assaulted right off the bat. We can't really see it too well and we don't generally see or hear the same things. It's like we're hallucinating and attacking nothing but something at the same time. It's weird.."

When the man gestured to her she frowned but walked ahead anyway, looking back at him with slight concern. Was he mocking her? "Um..I didn't get your name?"

"Thompson," he said flatly, having apparently decided that anyone who greets him with an "ew gross" is not allowed to be on a first-name basis.

"There have been strange lights seen by people who pass by the resort," said Gale, in answer to Peyton's question as mentally he walked through the checklist inside of his head. Runic weapons, check; bandages, check; notes...notes...check... "There have also been reports of music being played, even though there isn't anyone who lives at the San Xhi Resort and they've been abandoned for twenty years. Locals see them as haunted, so they tend to stay away, which means something's not quite right."

He slid a sideways glance at Taym, slight exasperation in Gale's voice as he said dryly, "That's Obadiah. Or Taym, as I heard you prefer being called?" he added, with a tilt of his head. "Also, no smoking on missions."

"All right, through the portal, and weapons out."

The sidewalk of the San Xhi resort was cracked and breaking, weeds growing up in the spaces left behind. Gale led the team down a walkway, a runic dagger, rather than Jinhai, in one hand.

"I think the reports said more due west," he said, half to himself, but the rest of his thoughts were lost as a large crack ripped through the air, echoing dismally in the silent resort.

Gale stopped walking abruptly, throwing out a hand.

"Wait," he said, but there was another crack from the sidewalk and something greyish and cloudlike burst from beneath his feet. Gale gave a yell of surprise, staggering backwards, but the gas was already swelling, swirling around them all, billowing upwards in a hiss.

His head was beginning to spin.

"WEAPONS!" Gale coughed, his voice hoarse, and something moved in his line of vision, something black and snarling...

They were headed to a haunted resort to deal with whatever was making it haunted? Sounded.. Fun. Pale eyes twitched to the other two, gagging their reaction, was met instead by Taym giving Heidi the cold shoulder. It made her blink at him, breath leaving in an amused sniff before Gale corrected him and gave the other girl his actual name, instead of his last name. It made her snicker quietly under her breath, even more so when Gale added the no smoking rule, and she could only shrug and smile at the death trainee if he happened to look in her direction before they entered the portal.

She summoned Warrick immediately upon Gale's order, and she kept close as they began walking along the sidewalk that wove around the odd, pod like cabin units, and she kept her eyes moving, searching around them.

A loud crack echoed through the air, and Peyton didn't need Gale to tell her to wait, she froze, tension crawling into her shoulders as she stared around them. Another crack followed the first, and something grey and swirling rose up around them like gas.

Instinctively she threw an arm up as she backed up, trying to push Taym and Heidi back as well as Gale called for weapons and all hell broke loose around them.

Whatever that gas was, it rose up to surround them, and Peyton didn't know if something was actually out there, or if whatever she'd breathed in was making her think something was out there. Her head was spinning, noises around her were muffled. She grit her teeth as she pushed a hand back into someone's chest, before a swooping shadow made her slash out with one of her blades. She didn't connect with anything, but seconds later something dark and sharp swiped back at her. It struck her in the arm, and although her shield protected her she let out a startled yelp anyways,

He bit back the observation that he'd already put his cigarette out for a reason, but he seemed less put out by the "no smoking" than he did by Gale's attempts to build a happy friendship bridge.

As luck would have it, he wouldn't have time to comment even if he had wanted to. Maybe it was because exposure to various mind-altering substances was essentially Taym's baseline state, and maybe it was because the little incident in the Shadowrun had taught him a lesson, but Fionnghal was out and in his hands almost before Gale barked out the order.

"Watch it," he snapped at Peyton's shove, nipping back in to take a swing at a shadowy thing in the fog. He wasn't even sure what he was aiming at, but the feeling of the charge connecting told him it was something real, at least. Unfortunately, that meant it could hit back, and for worse than it had gotten.

Obadiah? That..oh! Obi Wan! Okay, so he was the grumpy gus. Made sense. Heidi held back a smug smile when Gale told Obi Wan no smoking, keeping a perfectly passive face as she stepped through the portal. Heidi didn't need to be told twice, or even once, to summon Matilda. The weapon was in her hands before her feet touched the ground on the other side. None of her external missions had been easy or quiet, they always nearly died during them.

And apparently this was no exception.

"Again?! Cover your nose!" Heidi groaned as she quickly pulled her scarf up around her face to cover her nose and mouth. It wasn't perfect but it was something. The world spun but she planted her feet as firmly on the ground as she could. She stood in front of someone--who--oh. Gale. Right. Matilda was held out horizontally in front of her, eyes darting everywhere in search of something, anything.

"Gale? What kind of weapon do you have?" She heard Peyton yelp and she jumped, looking for her and Obi Wan. "Are you two okay?"

So much for getting the job done quickly. Gale coughed, waving a hand in front of his face to try and dispel some of the smoke wafting in front of him, feeling his head spin unpleasantly. A sense of dread was gnawing in his stomach, and Gale grit his teeth, hearing Jinhai make an annoyed sound inside of his head.

An explosion of gunfire broke through the dense shadows.

"I have a gun," said Gale a moment later, entirely unnecessarily.

It was probably for the best that Peyton was preoccupied enough to have not heard Taym snapping at her for trying to push him out of harms way. She would have been irritated.

As it was, the swirling gas and whatever was lurking within were enough of a distraction that she barely caught Heidi's concerned shout. "I'm fine!" So far. s**t had hit the fan, but they weren't in trouble yet. Not really.

A flicker of shadow moved beside her and she spun on her toes and drove a small fist towards the bulk of the shape. To her delight she managed to hit something, but it retaliated. Knocking her away with a hard blow to the hip.
