Death Hunter DEATHSWEEPER General Information The large stone cavern with the tiled floor and large yellow smiley face is likely familiar to at least several trainees, and may even feature in a few nightmares from time to time. Welcome to Deathsweeper, the training course that may only be attempted via c-type golem, and often acts as a testing ground for the Life Division's more painful creations. Stealth and detecting imminent danger are vital for Death Hunters and anyone who has to spend extended amounts of time near Caelius. The Deathsweeper chamber is full of hidden traps that only the finest of survival instincts can survive unscathed.
If you fail: you get to once again relive the sensation of dying. Painfully and sometimes quite strangely.
If you win: you have survived stepping 5 tiles into the room. Anything further is purely for peen and bragging rights.
Mechanics roll 1 d10 check for hp loss and death decide whether or not to use your bonuses if you survive, repeat. roll list: the traps are ICly constantly changing, so feel free to get creative as to what exactly those traps are! -50% HP is off your full HP, so if you hit -50% twice, then you are 100% KO'd
01. horrible death 02. - 50% HP 03. live 04. live 05. - 50% HP 06. - 50% HP 07. horrible death 08. - 50% HP 09. live 10. horrible death
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. All participants get a flag, this flag will allow your character to notice something about the area they're stepping into. OOCly this means you can adjust your rolled number, up or down, by one point. Instinctive moves are used in the same manner as flags. These are stackable, so if you have 1 flag + 1 instinctive move, you can use them up in order to adjust your roll by two.
(If you roll a 1, you may not move your number down to 0, -1, or 10. And 10 cannot be adjusted to 1 or 11.)

Here was the thing: Taym didn't actually ever want to think, at least not in the introspective, directionless, non-goal-oriented sort of way. Thinking led to bad places. Thinking was hard to avoid right now. He'd tried sleeping it off after the slightly traumatic spar with Peyton, but despite his physical exhaustion and running on about a two hours of rest, sleep had refused to come. His thoughts chased each other in circles, and he'd been just about to drift off when his traitorous brain replayed a knife sinking up to the hilt into a set of skinny girlish ribs, and a shrill scream. He'd heard things. He was good at hearing things. He sat in on conversations and disappeared completely, when he wanted to. So here he was. Nothing like a good life or death scare to get the hindbrain shouting out the fore. The alien sensation of occupying a golem helped too; it added an interesting layer of detachment. The grins of the techs at the dumb-as-bricks newbie had been ominous, and rightfully so. He took a step thoughtlessly, and was engulfed in flames like they'd accidentally (?) given him a golem made of napalm. He scrambled. Status Step: 1HP: 20 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: 1

Initially, scrambling was a relief, because the tile crumbled into something wet, and so he was doused. He wasn't sure what it was that did the dousing, but whatever it was, it burned a lot worse than fire. All right. Strike. ********. One. ATTEMPT TWOI have no mouth, and I must scream, he said, although he rarely initiated conversation with Fiona. He was shaken up. What the ******** kind of sadistic assholes were running this place? he thought of all the warnings about Caelius. Come again, sir?Don't call me sir. And never mind. All right. Round two. He tentatively assayed a step, but before he could put his foot down his hackles rose. Maybe not. Yeah. Definitely... definitely not. He stepped to the side and in his anxiety to get away from whatever was telling him not to put his foot down there, he put it down here instead without thinking. After doubling over, he looked down with vague, detached horror at the thing sticking out of his chest, and had more sympathy for Peyton. Status Step: 1HP: 20 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: USING - 0

OK, so he'd learned his lesson twice now about blindly and instinctively trying to get away from the pain. That was good. Through the mist of rage and (to put it mildly) discomfort, he managed to observe that the tile next to him was frosted over like a cold glass, and he wasn't sure why, but he dropped a flag on it, which immediately crystalized in an attractive and horrifying way. He tentatively took a step in the other direction, and relaxed when nothing happened. Status Step: 2HP: 20 Flags: USING - 0 Instinctive moves: 0

He stood for a long time just wishing he hadn't gotten himself into this, pretty well convinced that he was ******** no matter which way he went. So when he stepped and nothing happened, he exhaled, and went to try another. Except he couldn't. One foot was stuck, completely immovable for some unknown reason. A string unfurled from the ceiling. On the end of it was a machete. A second followed, bearing a bottle of pills with a skull and crossbones on it and a label that said, in neat script, "slow and painful death." And then a third, with a note that said I WANT TO PLAY A GAME. The reference was wasted on someone like Taym. He stared at the items with a baffled lack of comprehension that blossomed slowly into horror as understanding crept in. A fourth string descended, and this time the note said JUST KIDDING. He didn't see what hit him in the back of the head, but it hurt. Strike two. Status Step: 3HP: DED Flags: 0 Instinctive moves: 0

Attempt THREEI am in the wrong ******** division. What makes you say that, s--Obadiah?These people are sadists and psychopaths.Sounds like the right division to me, sir. That threw him for a loop. Was that a joke? From you? I'm shocked. From me? Never, sir. Obadiah. He took a decisive, almost angry step. Maybe if he moved with self-assurance the traps would be cowed into submission. Clipboard and an attitude. Act like you own the joint. Success! Status Step: 1HP: 40 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: 1

Well, it worked at first. The second stride, made as confidently as the first, brought a world of pain down on his head. Literally on his head: the ceiling opened up and a rain of pellets hit him with a force that suggested they'd been fired from something. "Son of a b***h!" Right, so back to tentative creeping. See, you know how I know I'm in the wrong division? How?Low ******** pain threshold, but I never told you that.Your secret's safe with me, sir.Tentative creeping worked, this time. A slow exhale of relief. Status Step: 3HP: 20 Flags: 1 Instinctive moves: 1

He stopped, reveling in the luxury of not being in immediate danger of his life, and crouched down to assess the tiles nearest him. There didn't seem to be any time limit, nor was he in a panicky rush. They all looked identical, so he crouched a bit lower, and shamelessly, sniffed. That one definitely smelled like... well. Not great. He had queasy good-hit-vomit memories, and planted the flag delicately. It partially disintegrated as soon as he did. He shuffled warily to the next tile, and made sure he could move his feet. Good. Very good. Status Step: 4HP: 20 Flags: USING - 0 Instinctive moves: 1

He actually partially put his weight on the next tile, but something told him that was a mistake, and he felt Fiona's surge of disappointment before he nimbly darted to the next one. He wasn't actually sure if dodging a hail of arrows was cheating, since he had triggered it, but there were no sudden warnings or flashing red lights. Well that wasn't so ******** bad. Game for another try?I believe humans say, go big or go home, sir. They usually leave off the sir.Status Step: FIVE BITCHESHP: 20 Flags: 0 Instinctive moves: USING - 0

He was getting cocky. Probably that would bode ill for him later, but for the time being he took the next tile with a stride that, if not as confident as he hoped, at least wasn't as terrified as he'd feared. Success. Haha. Excellent. Status Step: 6HP: 20 Flags: 0 Instinctive moves: 0

He bent down again to examine all the surrounding tiles. This was his job, right? It was a training course, not a sadistic entertainment source, right? Well, he could tell himself that. North, south, east, and west. All ********, he suspected. Time for a daring diagonal. Good luck won out. Status Step: 7HP: 20 Flags: 0 Instinctive moves: 0
