SHADOW RUN General Information The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. (2d8 for Taym) If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.
Trainees: 0 recovery

She woke up just barely on this side of the grave, a low burn of anxiety thrumming through her veins. The clock read five forty two, and it's too early to be awake let alone alive, but the bed was empty, again (and again, and again). A note on the bedstand read in even writing (void black ink, staining paper that's hospital wall white) that Clarice in the shop, and to call if she's needed. Clerise stretched, stumbling out of bed to grab workout clothes, because she already knew that today was a day for sweating our the rage, to bleed it out of her pores like she was a stuck pig. Sports bra, on, wife beater, on, capris, on, hiking boots, on. She pressed the palms of her hands against her closed eyes until she saw sparks, cussing up a storm as she slipped Balthazar's silver chain around her neck, as she dragged her nails along the walls of the dorms, as she fixed herself a protein shake for breakfast, as she tried to retain her grip on reality. It's tenuous, at best. Try again later. There was barely a soul around, except some twiggy guy who looks like he needed two sandwiches and a rigorous handshake. She settled for a hearty clap on the back, right between the shoulder blades, letting her natural state of shark-smile and blatant camaraderie take over. "Wanna go kill things?"

He had already arrived at the conclusion that everyone on this island was ******** insane, and being startled out of his grim post-breakfast reverie by a none-too-gentle smack and an invitation to casual murder absolutely cemented his opinion on the matter. He choked on the drag he'd been taking. He'd jumped like he'd been shot at; jumped like a startled animal. And now he held himself all taut and hunched like he was worried Clerise might bite him, or suddenly give chase, and he was looking at her from under his eyebrows with all the wariness of a feral cat. And yeah, he did feel murderous, but it was obvious that the only thing he felt like killing at this particular instant was whoever'd interrupted his smoke: the only blessed mundane ritual he had. "Good ******** morning to you too," he hazarded, not feeling as drily witty as he'd wanted to and instead sounding petulant. "I think I might have misheard you."

The way he jumped made Clerise cackle, a throaty laugh that could best be placed on the shelf between "Hyena" and "Crazed Witch" in tone and volume. She gave him a once over, from the front this time, making a not bad kind of face. Her bets were on him not sleeping at all.
"Morning to you too, Mister What-the-Cat-Dragged-in," Clerise replied, sliding a hand to her hip, cocking her head with obvious amusement evident on her face. "Nah, you heard me right. It's too early, I feel like s**t, and I want to kill things. Let's do the Shadow Run. You new here?"

She got a look over in return, and although his face was totally unreadable, his thoughts were privately running along a path of "not bad" as well, with somewhat more enthusiasm. Red hair, even. Too bad about that laugh. And the general... obvious, low-level insanity, although maybe you couldn't help that once you'd been here long enough. "So new I don't even know what the ******** you're talking about," he answered flatly, putting his cigarette out on the wall and stripping the butt off to shove it in his pocket. "Have the feeling I'm going to find out, though. I'm going to assume it's futile for me to resist?" Not that he wanted to, not really. It was early and he'd barely slept and barely eaten but he desperately wanted something to do, something to keep him busy.

"That," she replied with an ever widening grin, "is ********' perfect." Seizing him by the upper arm, Clerise merrily tugged Taym in the direction of the shadow run. Fresh out of the pod meant that he didn't have a side picked, and had not yet betrayed her by fraternizing with the enemies that were her family. "Fresh out of the ********' pod, like a little green pea," she crooned teasingly. "Yeah, I advise you not to pitch a fit," Clerise agreed. "I am pretty sure I could carry you with one arm to the shadow run, and I don't know if you want to be shamed in that way so early on in your career." A laugh. "Basically, it's just a training course. Run down a hallway, hallway is full of creatures from the beyond, try to kill them before you pass out. It's fun!"

He let himself get dragged along for a bit, too startled to really protest, but he made an effort to shake himself loose by the time she got done talking. He kept going, though. He couldn't put this s**t off forever. He didn't say anything for a long time, just tagged along at a slinking hunched-over lope, and when he did his voice was full of suspicion. "Fun? Exactly what kind of creatures from the beyond are we talking about? And who are you, exactly?"

Clerise quite literally kicked the door open to the training course, because using the door properly was overrated, scaring the ever-loving piss out of the tech inside the observation booth. They flipped her off before resuming their reading of what was presumably some sort of skin mag. Gesturing to the tunnel before them, Clerise nodded at the shadowlings that crawled underfoot of each other, ready to swarm at any moment. "Those little ********. They don't really have a proper name, but they're kinda dinky, so it's not a big deal." She pulled the pocketwatch off its chain, summoning her weapon: twin sickle scyhtes, his runes pulsing a cherry red against their curved silver blades. "Just follow my lead, smash some faces, and try not to get swarmed." Clerise jumped forward, lashing out with one blade, slicing at the nearest shadows. She moved with the grace of a practised athlete, of someone who had honed their body into something to be used instead of something to live inside. She was forceful by nature, boisterous and loud and a whirlwind wrapped up in a hurricane, and it had taken a lifetime of work to gain any semblance of control over her limbs. He wasn't ready for this. No, not like metaphorically, like he wasn't ready for this, he'd thought there'd be a warmup, or a lecture, or an orientation, or something, instead of plunging straight into a seething mass of shadowlings. Instead it actually took a sharp Sir! in his head for him to even remember, oh right, I have a sharp object like she has (or not exactly like she has), I can use-- Nope. Too late. He had a brief, not unattractive vision of Clerise going HAM, and then failure. Status Wave: 1 Attack Dmg: LIKE IN THE NEGATIVES Total Shadowlings taken out: ACTUALLY ZERO Recoveries left: 0

Clerise landed with ease, stomping on the head of a few shadowlings in the process, landing in a crouch. A number of creatures took no time in crawling over her, piling up higher than a multi-car accident on a freeway. For a minute, the tower went still, a chittering mass of creatures dogpiled on top of Clerise. With a roar, she sprung upwards, sickles arcing upwards in two massive slices. She shook her head, some red hair coming free from her usual braid, forcing a freehand backflip to shake off a few straggles that she soon dispatched after another stuck landing. And then she turned on her heel, facing Taym. ...Correction. Facing where Taym should have been. Snorting with laughter, Clerise hacked her way back to the beginning, waiting on him. "I didn't even see you summon your weapon--" because she doesn't pay attention to much of anything, "how'd you go down?" Her grin was only a little bit smarmy. Just a little bit. Someone other than Taym might have used the term "Zerg rush." Taym didn't know what a Zerg was or what it might rush or why. He was pissed now, though. Not pissed enough to be hypereffective, but pissed enough that he had the presence of mind to summon Fionnghal, the weight sudden and reassuring in his hand, and almost distractedly bat off a handful of lingering shadowlings while he struggled to his feet. "Who the ******** are you?" he demanded, looking like he wanted to turn the blade on her more than anything. "This is your idea of a good time?" "So you do have a weapon, and aren't some shmuck in disguise!" She laughed, and she was getting into the groove of combat, letting it roll over her in a wave, letting it possess her. "I mean, you're still a schmuck, but. You know. One of our shmucks!" It probably didn't make much sense to twiggy, but Clerise had a system, okay. Most of the people on her side were complete ********, and most of the time it didn't bother her personally, as long as hey could take care of themselves. "Don't be such a wiener," the redhead fired back, giving him a look full of quirked eyebrow and a bring it on stare. "This ain't so bad." To make a point, she lopped the head off of a few shadowlings. "My name's Clerise, if that's your way of asking. I'm in Life." She turned on her heel to face Taym, lashing Balthazar's blades out behind her, and the look on her face was one that was pleased as punch, if not a little crazed. "Are you kidding? This is my idea of something to do when I'm bored. If I want a good time, I'll pump iron or bother my girlfriend or something." "You just said it was fun!" he protested. "Like a minute and a half ago!" He was so busy bitching at her he didn't have time to take note of what his arms were doing, and they apparently did pretty well on their own. That wary-animal aura served him well when he wasn't thinking too hard about leashing it, and he moved surprisingly nimbly, with a bony, stiff-jointed lack of grace that put one in mind of a twitchy spider. "If you were looking for something to do you could have suggested the pumping iron." With those arms? ha! "Or the girlfriend," he added, because he couldn't help it. She looked at Taym, humming to herself, and promptly flung both of her sickle scythes behind her. They flew threw the air, rotating like little chopper blades, chopping up monsters behind her. "Oh." She scratched the back of her head, and then shrugged sheepishly. "Listen, dude. I've got, like, the shortest attention span. You'd probably insult a goldfish if you compared my mind to its. But hey, see! Now you're killing things like you're supposed to instead of being a whiny baby!" Clerise threw the horns in his direction, nodding he head appreciatively. "Are you even capable of lifting? Do you lift a toothpick and some marshmallows, is that how that rolls? Do you have to do the cheaty kind of pushups, where you use your knees?" A suspicious whizzing sound came through her ears, but Clerise opted to continue ribbing the newbie. Even if he was actually doing pretty good right now! "Nah, dude, I used to do that, but we're not that sharey anymore, I mean, I don't really know you and--" THUMP. THUMP. Her sickles had come back to clock her right in the back of the head, one after another. Knees buckling, Clerise resorted to an interlude of creative swearing, and smacking her sickles against the ground as if that could hurt them. (It could not.)
