The forest was ancient and dark, no light from the sun was able to shine through the thick canopy of trees; yellow eyes watched those who traveled the woods, waiting for a sign of weakness, for an opportunity to attack. Bird calls were loud and piercing as their prey scurried beneath the entrapping brush. A single horse walked through the woods, her tail swishing as she stepped delicately over the protruding roots. Her horn was dark, in certain shadows it looked as if it was stained with blood. The mare’s brown eyes watched the woods with contempt, waiting for a creature stupid enough to deem her prey; a few had already tried and they were now collecting maggots on the side of the trail. She stopped in the middle of the trail, all had gone silent; a wicked smiled crossed her countenance and she waited patiently for what was to come. Mere seconds passed before a blur appeared from the dense darkness and headed straight toward her with yellow teeth bared; her horn came down and impaled the starved creature. With a sharp movement of her head she sent the carcass flying into a nearby tree with a thud. She continued to walk as the metallic scent of blood filled the air and the sounds of the forest were mixed with the tearing of flesh and her devious laughter.

Guinevere, b*****d daughter to King Leodegrance, had achieved the basis of her future goals. She had infiltrated her sister’s kingdom, pretended to be Gwenevere and even became pregnant with Arthur’s child. While she was his queen she had set the ground work for suspicion, the average populace of the kingdom believe Gwenevere to be a whore who slept with Arthur’s second in command. And now that Gwenevere is pregnant, everyone is suspicious that the foals are not Arthur’s but one of his knights. Eve laughed out loud, it was just so delicious, it did not matter that her original goal of killing her sister fell through; this type of revenge just seemed so much sweeter.

Thinking about the fruition of her schemes made her skip in excitement, now that her son was grown and using his skills to destroy the meek and find a perfect mare to be the mother of his spawn and his mother’s minions. There was another thing she must attend to before she could continue on with her goals; in her travels she had heard of an herb that when taken while pregnant it would kill the weaker foals. It was such an interesting concept and one she was willing to test out to validate its claim. The mare was seeking out the stallion who held this information and she would do anything to get it and discover if such an herb really did exist.

Erebes had always been a loner. Even when trying to be a part of a family he was alone. He liked it that way. Was safer that way. When he ventured off on his own he chose this random part of the woods. To hone his craft. To learn all the herbs that he needed. He identified with plants far more than he identified with other soquili. It was hard sometimes, to pretend to care. They found him in his little part of the woods. Asking for his help. Asking for an herb because they feel sad, because I am not thin enough, I hate this horse can you give me something to take care of it…

He hadn’t meant to get into this. He didn’t even need payment. He enjoyed making these concoctions. He liked hearing the problems so he could create a solution. It was what he was good at. Call him crazy but sometimes you had to do something that maybe you aren’t so proud of in order to do something that you really loved. And he loved his plants. He loved his work.

He glanced up to the moon. It was shining so bright, so giant in the sky. It was starring down at him as if it was judging him for the sins he had committed. He glared. He wasn’t the one who wanted the herbs to use on others. In that way his conscience was clear.

That's why he enjoyed being alone. Even in this part of the woods the creatures that roamed the dark did not disturb them. He didn't get into their business and so they stayed out of each others way. Their yellow eyes often peeked at him from the darkened branches above. But he was sure he scared them. His color was so different from these dark areas. They had seen him kill other small creatures like themselves without even touching the dying being. They were frightened. Sometimes he even frightened himself. And then he got over it and moved on doing what he knew. Because he was the best.

Where was he? Eve continued to search, she knew the basic location the stallion liked to call home or his lair as she liked to call it. He was growing quite a reputation and it was time to test if that reputation was truth or just make believe. If it was all a lie, he would not live long enough to spread any more rumors about his prowess; she would make sure of that. A stand of auburn hair fell into her face, blocking her view of the path, with an irritated breath she blew it out of her face; she hated to search for a stallion, usually they would come to her and that is the way she preferred it. The forest sound dimmed, and became quiet, signifying that there was a creature roaming the dark woods that terrified them, a wicked smile crossed the face of the mare, making her twisted and ugly, compared to her normal beauty. She had found the stallion and now there was no escaping for him, he would help her or he would die, there was not any other option.

On silent hooves she followed the silence, keeping her brown eyes alert for a large shadow. Minutes passed before she heard the sound of soft hoofs hitting the dirt. There you are, she thought and continued to follow the stallion, like a mountain cat stalking its prey. She stopped when she got a good look at him, and it was all she could do to stop from gasping out loud in appreciation. He was a delicious stallion with four sets of wings that appeared to be leaf like and he was green as the lush forest around him. Even if he did not know the answer she sought, she would like to have some fun with him first.

She stopped and waited for him to sense her presence, if he was as good as the rumors said, he would have known right when she entered into his territory. Her stance appeared relaxed, but if he should turn hostile it would only be a second before she was ready to use her horn and deadly force. Eve would prefer not to have to resort to that, since she was quite enthralled with the stallion and kept imagining how he would benefit her in other ways.

Someone was sneaking about. He sensed it. He continued what he was doing. Currently his small alcove was in a bit of disrepair. Early in the day he had had a client that needed a small potion to cure the head aches that she was consistently having. He rolled his eyes. He didn’t think it was headaches that had been conflicting the mare but rather the fact that it hurt for her to think. Not the brightest, that one. In consequence, his tools were still lying about. A mortar and pestle that he often used to grind his ingredients together lay on the table.

The rock table that took up most of this clearing. He had made his home and did his work in this area. The table that he made himself when he decided to get into this business. He stored most of his ingredients amongst the leaves. In case he departed and someone wandered into this part of the woods and saw his stash of his sometimes poisonous items. They would not know the difference, but he knew. The most toxic were in their own bottles, gleaming see through containers that allowed him to move them without touching the contents.

He stared at the leaves covering the items in question. Normally this late in the night he would be sleeping. It was odd that his mind was so unquiet. He didn’t often think of his past. It was best to just leave it where it was. But for some reason on this night he kept thinking of how…Alone he was feeling. Maybe I need to get out more…? Even in his mind it sounded like a question. But by nature he liked to be alone. Maybe it was just a phase. Maybe its because he still wasn’t sleeping. Or maybe it was because the person who had sought him out still had not shown themselves.

“I know you are here. There is no use in hiding. I assume you sought me out for a reason.” He said into the silent night.

Oh he was good, she liked that about him already. “So what gave me away?” She smiled as she walked out of the shadows and into the stallion’s line of sight. Her brown eyes looked around his place of business, it was in a state of disorganization but it showed the mare that he actually used this place to create his potions, “And yes, there is a very good reason why I am here and I heard that you were the one who could create what I want.” She walked closer to the stallion, keeping an assessing eye on him, oh he was quite the specimen. Once she got what she wanted, she would ask him what he is, because no normal stallion would grab her attention like he was currently doing.

She stopped at the mortar and pestle sitting on the giant flat rock he used as his work are, “What did you create here? Which herbs?” The mare knew quite a bit about herbs and potions, she taught her son everything she knew about poisons and so considered herself an expert on the subject, but there was always room for more information, “Oh, I digress.” She faced the stallion in all seriousness, “I want an herb or an herb concoction that will kill a weak foal but keep the strong ones alive. It is like a poison, but it makes the strong one stronger and the weak one cease to be. Can you do what I ask? And if you agree, I want you to show me what you do and teach me the method.”

He would not deny her, who would pass up this opportunity where many believed it not to exist. Her offer would surely call to his ego. “You would be the only one who could accomplish such a feat.” Eve turned her smile on the stallion, “Will you do this for me? It does not matter the cost.”
