I didn't want to hijack Alice's thread with all of this so I'm putting it in its own little thread. I'm seriously looking into trying to run a role-play again and since summer is upon us and most of us aren't overly busy during the summer months what better time to run one again. I want to do one that doesn't take itself or the players very seriously. It's going to be wacky, over the top, very cliched, and full of stereotypical things and it's going to be set on Gaia. I know what I want to do but I'm not sure how I'm going to execute it.
The premise of the whole role-play is a group of explorers and adventurers searching for lost city on what has been called a fool's expedition because any attempt to find the place has thought to be cursed as prior expeditions have vanished without a trace. The original role-play had an eccentric wealthy museum board member offering millions to anyone who could bring back any proof of the lost city's existence, a mad scientist type villain wanting to use the rumored cursed stone within the city as the power for his ultimate weapon in yet another attempt to take over the world, bumbling sidekicks trying to stop our group of adventurers from making it to the city, and an entire tribe of pygmies living along the Congo River all taking place on modern day Earth. It was a mixture of cliched Thirties and Forties adventure movies and a little Indiana Jones styled action.
That was the original that I first did nine years ago and redid seven years ago back on another site. This time I want to try a very similar premise on Gaia. Now I'm sure we all know the status of zOMG where site plot canon is concerned and it's because of that my lost city here on Gaia can be the Otami Ruins without stepping on any official site canon. However, that's about as far as I get with this idea. I have another idea that can merge beautifully with my role-play idea. I've been tossing about the idea of a Barton Explorer's Club, which could replace the museum aspect in the original, but I'm open to expanding things outside of Barton. This could be an awesome way for us to immerse ourselves into the Gaia world.
So the overall premise, worth doing or does it need some work? The Explorer's Club, work it in or nix it all together? And is the idea of a cursed blood red ruby causing the fall and ruin of the entire ancient Otami civilization a good one or should it be something else? Airships for transport, yay or nay? And should we have some kind of wacky stereotypical evil scientist doctor type with henchmen for a villain or not?
Yes, I'm bouncing ideas off all of you so I can work up something that will actually make it to the end this time. Because gosh dang it I actually want to get farther than the tribe of natives capturing part of the group and really mucking things up for our heroes. xp
So who's up for some wacky Gaia based adventure this summer?

Just going to rewrite all of my ideas here again from my thread. > A<Quote: Well then how about we give the story a little tweak, eh?
I thought about it for a bit and had an idea that Otami Ruins could lead to the Lost City and that the tribe of pygmies are actually natives from the Old Aqueduct. Maybe they were the only ones who managed to survive the invasion of the animated, but that could be up to anyone to think about. London could be replaced by Barton- I mean Durem sounds like a better choice, but Barton is the centre of the Gaian community and is the oldest town out of all the other ones. I also had this idea (stuck in my brain for a long time) that the Art Arena is connected to historical museums, since you can browse in the Arena to look at art. If you can browse art in the arena, then think about how similar it would be to an actual museum. Maybe the Arena has different blocks (for example: a block that shows off the history of Gaia or something.)
Sorry, once the ideas are laid out, it's hard to stop myself. redface Thoughts? D:

Sorry, once the ideas are laid out, it's hard to stop myself. redface Thoughts? D: Oh no no need to be sorry. I like most of what you have going there. I definitely was having blocks where it came to what I could translate the pygmy tribe into. How to work up the civilization that used to live in Otami without making them too corny sounding was where I'd always get stuck. I could do something with some of those ideas you put out there. However, I kind of want to avoid breaking that fourth wall. Most of the characters we're going to be creating won't know about forums and the art competitions. I was thinking, and you can totally yay or nay this, about having a Durem Natural History Society. It would kind of be like the National Geographic Society sending out people to explore and research Gaia's ancient past. They would be the ones to fund the first expedition to Otami that went missing that had both the ruins and any attempt to find them be considered cursed and a fool's mission. And it was because of that early mission the famed Barton Explorer's Club was disbanded.
It's pretty much going to be someone from the Natural History Society putting up the money to fund another expedition to Otami after the society says only a fool would go on such an expedition that's going to get people to want to revive the Explorer's Club no matter how much the rest of Barton is against the idea because of the supposed cursed expedition. You know I really do think that whole Explorer's Club angle is what I really needed to help kick up some new ideas for this thing.

I really like this idea-particularly as it's set in the world of Gaia. I think the Barton Explorer's Club fits in well. Generally the Gaia universe is very flexible in terms of setting so I can't see any problems there.

Yeah that's what I like about it, especially with what they hinted on when they did the whole airship stuff a few years back. Plus, with the age of my character it'd be something she would have heard about as a young child and even though she knows about that doomed expedition she would still want to try and find Otami. Now my hangup is in creating an explorer type look for my avatar. xp

I like this idea! I'd need to come up with a character... And an avatar or two.

The airship plot had so much potential, but then the whole thing seemed to just fizzle out, which was an awful shame. It'd be interesting to explore how and why my character would join the expedition. I think the outfit she's wearing in my signature art would work well for this. 3nodding

I guess we were too dependent on the airship plot and the summer event that year to keep things interesting and it became hard to keep people wanting to participate in the role-play and the guild entirely.
Considering one of the character requirements was they all had some kind of weapon, even if it was a small handgun for protection, your character would fit right in. The whole why someone would want to go on such an expedition was a fun thing to explore. Some were in it for the money, some wanted to uncover the mysteries of the lost city for the historical side of things, and then there were some who simply were in it for the pure thrill of the hunt so to speak. Why a half elf, a pixie, and whatever else people work up would be so interested in finding Otami should turn out to be very interesting,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am working on refining and fixing up the basic overall back story and plot for the RP as we speak. I can make further adjustments to things before I even put up some kind of OOC and character sheet thread. Now should I bring Durem in this at all or do you think it would work better if I rework the Natural History Museum/Society side of things and have it instead be a mysterious wealthy benefactor wanting revive the Barton Explorer's Club because he wants the large blood red ruby for himself and will pay a large sum of gold to anyone who brings it to him?
I'm wondering if having a stereotypical villain in this thing would still be worth having or if I should go the route of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and have it be every man and woman for themselves with wacky mishaps and setbacks along the route to the ruins. I want to make this a fun RP for the summer that everyone can enjoy and I figure the wackier and more over the top it is the better.

I'm sorry your guild didn't work out, it sounds like you had a really good concept behind it, if people had only had the interest, I was thinking that myself-as a sword wielder, weapons wouldn't be a problem. Rika would be perfectly suited to this kind of a story. I'd love to explore what would compel my half elf to take off on an adventure like this one. It'd also be fun to see how everyone's characters interact with each other.

I think the Barton explorers club should be revived. A main villain or a mad mad mad world take both sound pretty good.

this sounds quite fun. Barton Explorers Club = Awesome. a main villain could work... but i could live without it a secret villain among them would be much more suited for the rp. Someone that wants the ruby or the reward for the ruby all for themselves kind of person.
now i got to think up an avi for this as well... hm

fewer NPCs the better. To many of them can make some problems. Finding out who is the traitor will be fun. ...I have not seen Kim Possible in forever. always loved Ron Stoppable. And here is my avi Tobi the Cave Explorer Never without his belt of many things including two pistols, backpack of everything else and awesome night vision goggles he is ready to crawl thru any dark areas others fear to go. Getting a few scars is nothing to him. Hates wearing socks, so avoids colder areas Is a smoker when we are closer to having the rp and others make theirs i will add a few more details about him. For now that is good to try and inspire others to be creative. I just really hope someone makes a doctor, or this might not be very pretty sweatdrop
