It was one of those days. One were there is no sun. No sun at all to warm his coat. No sun to brighten his mood. A day were in this desolate field there was no sound but the thunder slowly rolling above and the sharp winds that made the grass sway.

It was here that Erebes found himself wandering, slowly making his way towards the trees that lined cresting knoll. He knew the rain was coming and the very thought of getting wet made his wings flutter. He huffed at the thought. Even the word flutter made him think of his stupid girly wings. Black feathers flashed through his mind of he thought of his father with his commanding gait and deep black wings. Cyan eyes shifted to glance at the wings in question and with another huffed he looked away and started up the not so very steep hill that lead to the trees.

A droplet of rain fell from the cloud covered sky to land ever so gently onto his snout which stopped him in his tracks. Unwillingly his eyes crossed to look upon the wee droplet. Slowly his eyes narrowed in heated concentration. Of course, of course it would begin raining on this already horrible day.

Rolling his eyes up to the skies he stared at the gray puffiness above. Another droplet fell onto his snout, and than another to his forehead, and then the sky unleashed a torrent upon him.

His coat took only seconds to soak up the water, and he suddenly felt heavier. Hanging his head down in defeat he once again began his trek to the trees. Within minutes he arrived and got below the tall trees, their leafy foliage shielding him from the downpour that appeared so suddenly.

He shook his head which led to the rest of his body, attempting to dislodge the water. It appeared to have no effect and he stopped his efforts and instead looked out over the pasture. Today was the worst.

He loved the rain, there was something so peaceful about it as it washed away the old and brought in new life as it saturated the land. Westrion stood beneath the droplets, letting them slide off his slick black wings and tickle onto his back. Everything went silent during a rain storm, there were no squawks from birds, only the drip drop sound of the water falling on the canopy of tree leaves was heard. The world was playing its song for all to hear; Westrion smiled, who was not moved by the beauty of nature? His father had told him many stories about meetings in the rain, two of which were important encounters that changed Háidēs’ life forever: the meeting of Callan beneath an ancient tree and the discovery of Roman, Westrion and Erebes’ adoptive brother. The God of the Underworld had found Roman bleeding out after a Purewalker attack and healed his wounds and treated him like a son, waiting for him to talk again. It was stories like that which made Westrion love what his family did, treating the sick, helping them get better, giving them stones that would ward off negative energy and bring positive energy into their lives.

Westrion looked down at the pendant he wore, it was like the one his father made for his mother when they first met, since Lina had the tendency to get into trouble, his father had told him in a conspiratory tone. The foal had received his narcissus necklace at the same time as his brother as thanks from their father when they helped him treat an influx of injured soquili. Westrion wore his around his neck, proud to have a symbol of the family that represented his will and drive to help those in need. He did not know where his brother kept the amethyst necklace and was saddened by that fact.

It was as if his thoughts had summed him, for there, standing on a small mound overlooking the rain soaked pasture was his green brother Erebes. A large smiled appeared on the colt’s countenance, and he raced forward as fast as his four wings would allow him to run. “Hello Brother! Lovely rain we are having! The earth was thirsty and now all the herbs will be green and the world will be lush. Is it not wonderful?” Westrion looked at his brother with happiness and tried not to smile at his brother’s apparent discomfort, instead gave him a sympathetic smile, “Oh, I forgot, you don’t like the rain very much do you? It should stop here in a few hours.”

His brother’s happy disposition often times got on his nerves. But he never said these thoughts aloud. He was different from the rest of his family, to be sure, but he didn’t want to intentionally hurt his brothers feelings,

“Yeah, not too happy about the weather.” He answered his brother. He muttered the statement but it was almost a useless answer. His brother could tell that he hated this weather. It always made him moody and tired. Cranky is the word his mother enjoyed using. It wasn’t his fault. It was just the way he was. The sun was his friend and the cloudy skies were his enemy. Until this rain cleared up he knew that his sour mood would continue.

From the corner of his eye he saw a flash of purple. He huffed. The narcissus pendant his brother wore was the same as the one his mother also had and the one he had stowed away. His father enjoyed rocks and gems, metals and other such things that came from the earth. In fact, the necklace his mother always wore was the first gift his father ever gave to her. It was a romantic story for sure. But half the time he continued their story in his mind. Of them falling in love and becoming lifemates. Of the moment they found out they were going to have children. The shock of when they saw him with his green body and plant like wings crawling out of his basket.

He can recall that day. His mothers purple eyes starring in through the crack between the basket and the lid that contained him. Her soft voice, calling to him, telling him to come out and greet the world. And the very moment she realized that he was not what she expected, what she wanted. She claimed to love him. But he will always remember that look.

Westrion looked at his brother and then at the rain clouds hovering above their heads. He had said a few hours of rain and it looked like his guess was night on the dot. He cast his caramel eyes out in the rainy gloom, the forest was only a few minutes away and would provide cover for the wet brothers, “Why don’t we go over there and get out of the rain?” He directed the woods with his head, “You will feel slightly better once you are not soaked to the bone and I am sure there is a cave or a rock hanging in those woods.” He knew that his brother would be bitter and grumpy all day while the rain still fell from the sky and the sun was blocked by the thick clouds. “Erebes, I,” Westrion was not sure what he should talk to his brother about, he cared for the colt, but Erebes always seemed to pull away from him and did not want to create that brotherly bond that he has seen in other siblings. Its not like there were any fillies in any of their lives to talk about something as silly as a crush. The black winged colt shook his head, ridding himself of such thoughts, there was no time for girls for him or his brother. Haides was constantly teaching them or Erebes was wandering off. “Why are you up here all alone?” Westrion wanted to start walking down to the woods but remained where he was waiting for his brother to make the first move.
