I was at Judo training on the weekend, and this kid and I were talking about music. He is into all the hardcore death metal type stuff which is not really my thing. When I said I liked jazz, he looked at me like he was an idiot. I asked him what he had heard and he said he refused to listen to any of it 'cause "its all crappy boobidoo bullshit". Before I decide a genre is crap, I LISTEN TO IT! How can someone form an opinion without knowing anything!?

I definately have a problem with people that have closed minds about things like that. I try to watch listen, read, something that i dont understand before i go ahead bashing it. I find it pretty harsh when someone bashes something that another person loves. unfortunately i'm guilty of that but it has to do with turning on the tv and watching things like American Idol and Beauty and the Geek.

Ah, just give him the most complicated jazz song for guitar and see what he says. Death metal is like all one chord with words that can't even be understood. It's more like noise, in my opinion. Oh, maybe there's some good stuff out there, but I'd rather not waste my time finding it. domokun In conclusion, jazz can be a very complex genre; perhaps the most complex. 3nodding

It makes me mad. Really mad.

But it also made me mad that someone JUST did the same thing. There's a lot of bad jazz out there too, and I had to spend time looking for the good stuff. It seems really hypocritical to say that, considering the topic of conversation.

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_jazz_guitarists. This is basically a long list of jazz guitarists that you can choose from.

*Getting back to the main topic*

My friends (who listen to rock) are always saying how stupid jazz is. Personally, I tell them that jazz isn't stupid; it's just not geared towards their low level of intellect.

I really like it! I dont see how something so peaceful, in my opinion, can make people hate it. I just dont see it! Why?!

Simple. People say such things because they are ignorant and have no wish to remedy their ignorance.

Congratulations, you're as ignorant about death metal as he is about jazz.

Here's a tip, Slipknot isn't death metal.

Jazz, much like classical, has a certain stigma attached to it. That's the way it is. Many people haven't heard much or any jazz but they assume they don't like it based on what they've heard about it, or because it's "old people's music". Some also don't like the instrumentation, because they like rock oriented ensembles (an electric guitar or two, bass, drums, vocalist) and aren't used to wind instruments like saxophones which is what jazz is to them. They don't even have any idea that jazz fusion exists.

Of course, there are people who know what jazz is and simply don't like the whole concept of it being based around soloing. To some this is simply musical masturbation and has no compositional value.

Eewww. So, tell me more about this wonderful death metal. I'm intrigued now that you say that my ignorance is like the other person's ignorance of jazz.

I've never seen so much progress made in so little time.

I mean, HS makes a fantastic snarky comment on death metal ignorance (much more to the point than mine) and then bingo- tell me about death metal.

hurrah.

you know, there's a really good section in the music forums about the different kinds of metal. it's a good start.
