Custom type: Growing semi custom
Name of guardian: "Brietath"
Gender of guardian: Female
Name of chosen: Ilmarinen Dixon
Description: Fire
Edits, if applicable: N/A
Other notes: Here!

Personality: She is absolutely convinced she is a natural leader. This is not the same as actually being one. There's potential, sure, but there are... issues. Let's start with the good stuff first: she's ambitious, brave, confident, and very, very honorable. She doesn't want to fight for the power, glory, or fame. She wants to fight for the sake of the fight, to be the first into the fray and the last out. She wants to protect what is hers. She wants to protect all of the world from the Wolves. It's just that she doesn't quite understand that being a leader is more than just yelling orders and expecting them to be obeyed.

Oh, and she's got a temper. A nasty one. She's on a hairtrigger an... ARE YOU STARING AT HER? YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH HINDS FIGHTING? COME HERE AND SAY THAT TO HER FACE! Or her hooves, as the case may be. She's a bit insecure about being a very combat-oriented hind. But a lot of it is just her being her. She yells. It's how she expresses herself.

But, when she's in a good mood, she's warm and sweet. She is the best bro Ilmarinen could ever ask for. Loyal to a fault, she will absolutely follow him to the edges of the world. She will never stab anyone in the back. If she's got a problem with you, she'll tell you to your face. Loudly. And frequently.

She is not the flirty sort. Breeding and mothering are completely out of her interest. Oh, she feels some vague sense of duty towards reproducing; she understands the vital need to produce more fawns and whatnot. It's just... it's just that romance isn't fighting. Any moment she spends not-fighting is a moment that's... well... not fighting. Like Ilmarinen, she has no idea how to comport herself in flirtatious situations. Or any sort of fancy situations, honestly. Like her bonded, she is completely out of place in this world of etiquette and hidden rules. It's much easier to just fight. THAT, at least, requires no rules besides, 'hit something. If it gets up again, hit it harder'.

Brietath was originally written for me by Tuathe De. She's based on the element of fire and 'Let it Rock' by Kevin Rudolf.

Kay

Custom type: Semi-custom Rook
Companion or familiar?: Companion
Pet name: Kay
Description: Golden brown. Maybe stripes? IDK. Just go ahead and run away with the whole golden-brown idea.
Edits, if applicable: N/A
Other notes:

Personality:
Rooks ought to be pretty bright, right? By the time they're adults, they've managed to survive Wardwood. That's a pretty feat right there. They've got to have the ability to avoid predators and all that. They're known for being clever.

And then there's Kay. She is, by far, the dimmest little creature to ever figure out what her wings are for (and sometimes she can't even manage that). She's the type of bird who would forget how to walk if her feet sunk under snow. Giving her a piece of string for a nest is dangerous because there's a good chance she'd tie herself to a chair. Twice. By accident.

On the bright side, she's incredibly sweet. Give her a piece of food and she's utterly convinced that you are her best friend forever and ever! She enjoys cuddles and attention, being rather more physically affectionate than most birds.

Maybe it's the feathers fluffing her out, but there's something rather spherical about this little bird.

You

Custom type: Semi-custom Rook
Companion or familiar?: Companion
Pet name: You
Description: Pale, cream, white
Edits, if applicable: N/A
Other notes: quest here

Personality:
Due to hatching oddly, You cannot fly. Or maybe it was Cordel's fault. No one ever gave him instructions on 'How to Teach Baby Birds to Fly'. No one ever thought of him interacting with babies (because the idea is vaguely scary). Anyway, whatever the reason, You cannot fly. Instead, he scampers around like a coked-out squirrel. He adores everyone and is insanely curious about people in general (especially if they have anything shiny upon their person). He has an immense amount of love for the entire world.

But, somehow, there's also room in there for hyperactivity and excitability. Oh, and that love of shiny things. Any visitors to Cordel's shop are warned to remove shiny rings beforehand. If you happen to extend your hand towards You, he may just slip that shiny, shiny ring off your finger. Actually, it's best to leave them at home, since he's figured out pockets. He really is quite clever, in his own way.

Personality:

What is rot, but fertile ground for growth?

It would be easy to look at Cairn and think that he's exactly what he appears to be: the shadow of death itself, a ghostly haunting upon the moors, and the darkness in the heart of the forest.

And, to an extent, that is correct. He is, by all meanings of the word, the Hart of the Forest. He lives and breathes it, understands its moods far better than he understands human beings. Rot has to happen. Trees must die and, when they do, they make room for new life all over again. The fungus that grows at the root of a tree? It's not ugly, for all it looks like dog vomit. To Cairn, it is a perfect thing of beauty, as is the towering tree overhead. They are the perfect example of what the world is to him: an endless cycle, of balance.

Where people get Cairn wrong is when they assume he's evil. What else could he be, but the darkness? But, here's the truth: dark is not evil. It's only within the darkness that the light can truly shine. His deep understanding of nature has made him compassionate. Where Silence would not help a baby bird, Cairn will. Everything deserves a chance and, quite frankly, nature isn't so delicate that the lack of a single death will throw it out of balance. The bird will be returned to the earth on its own time. There's no need to rush anything.

He's a slow thinker. He's certainly not stupid, just very, very cautious. He simply likes to think through all of his options before jumping to conclusions and actions. He's very aware that he's out of place once he's out of his realm and wants to be absolutely certain he doesn't make mistakes.

Which is more difficult than it looks. He has a very limited understanding of human nature. Tell him about Christmas and he'd come to the conclusion that the entire holiday is basically a birthday party and, for some reason, robins are involved. What is the purpose of Christmas cards, he would ask and patiently wait for an answer. I assume the receiver knows it's Christmas, so what is their purpose? To confirm that it is indeed this specific day? And why robins? They are not particularly cooperative birds. When I tried to attach one to this card, it flew away. 'Comical seriousness' is probably the best phrase to use. He takes his station as a connection between the forest and humans very, very seriously.

It's important to note that he doesn't have an imagination. He tries to. He so desperately tries. He adores music and poetry, songs and stories. He will listen to every last bit like an eager fawn in the hopes that, through the stories and songs, he will gain a better understanding of human nature (he loves and is fascinated by humans). Perhaps stories would reveal the importance of Christmas cards.

While he's slow to anger, he won't depart once he gets there. 'Mercy' is another one of those human things he doesn't understand. It's really very unwise to try and push around a giant deer who has a set of antlers like steak knives on his head. Threatening his Chosen is Not Smart. Threatening young animals around him is Not Smart.

Sometimes----not always, but sometimes-----he knows when someone is going to die. It's not looking into the future or anything (that is reserved for Hedgewitches). He simply knows when it's time for someone to leave the world and join the soil. Usually, it's in cases of disease or old age. One could argue that it has nothing to do with the supernatural and everything to do with the natural: there are certain signs when someone is dying, after all, so maybe Cairn just picks up on those signals. He doesn't comment on it. He always simply says, I just know in a voice as solemn as an open grave. When he senses an impending death, he's compelled to find this person and stand at their side so they don't wander to the spirit world alone. Everyone ought to have a guide. Everyone ought to know that someone cares. It's his duty.

Inspiration: The Dullahan and psychopomps in general. There's a bit of Discworld's Death thrown in there as well.

Chosen:
Chosen: Meera LASTNAME HERE?
Job: Dunno yet. Maybe a guard or something? She will absolutely leap into the position of Warden.
History: Grew up in Pallisade. This is pretty much as far as I've gotten. :C These days, she lurks around Oldcastle, as it's closer to the forest and Cairn feels more comfortable there. Meera's adaptable. Mostly, she works as a guard for the city. She has given due consideration to the idea of a black woman working with the guards and decided 'sod to the lot of them, I'll do it anyway and I will be ******** glorious'. But, whenever it gets too stressful, she takes a leave of absence for the country and prefers herding animals. She likes sheep and goats the most.

They, she finds, are often cleverer than humans. At least when sheep panic, they don't try to bite and kick the sheep next to them. She has one particular freemartin she likes; she raised him from a lamb. She calls him 'Lucky'.

Appearance: Meera is exactly what you get if you take a person and hammer them out on the anvil of life. Well, no, not really. I just thought that would be poetic. Anyway, she is a rather thin sort of person. Not skinny, exactly. She's more wiry, the sort that means muscles are strung along her limbs like beads on a wire. And she does have muscles. She is every inch a guard. In fact, she has to borrow a few inches off of someone else, since she doesn't have many for herself. She's 5'5''.

She's dark skinned. Her hair is dark, thick, and curly. She prefers to keep it cut short, just beyond her ears, because keeping it longer is a hassle. Also, long hair is a handy grip for when you're fighting with someone. She'd rather not just hand someone a weapon.

She's not exactly pretty. She's more handsome than pretty. Her sharp features are just a bit too sharp to be truly 'pretty'. But she does have lovely eyes; they're a bit large for her angular face and are a deep brown.

Personality: Meera has taken personal offense at the world. Mainly, she's taken personal offense because the world isn't doing things right. When she was tiny, she was raised with the ideas of truth, justice, and honor. Theeeen she realized that all those things were rather bunk.

Clearly, the world was wrong. Well, at least on some things. After a few fights, Meera quickly decided that 'honor' certainly had no place in that specific part of the world. If she must fight (and she's got a bit of a temper, so she absolutely will), she will fight hard and dirty and, above all else, to win. The point of a fight is to get the other person down on the ground as soon as possible. It's not to win points or something like that.

She is an extremely loyal person. On the bright side, this means she will stick by a friend throughout anything. On the downside, it means that if you try and convince her that, say, a friend is actually stealing from her, she will cover her ears and go LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU. Metaphorically speaking. Probably.

The people who are in charge are in charge for a reason, she feels. A hierarchy is necessary for order and she stands by it.

Stubborn. Have I mentioned that? Changing Meera's mind is like trying to rip a stump out of the yard. Necessary in some cases but, in others, it's probably not worth it. Just work around the proverbial stump. It'll probably save time. She's also a very determined person. Acutely aware of being a woman in a man's world, she is decidedly prickly about any comments (or perceived comments). She is absolutely determined to crawl up through the command, because she thinks the best chance she's got at changing the way the world works lies there.

She does care. Really, she does. It's just that caring in this world is like being a cow in a pond of piranhas. Sooner or later, they'll strip the poor thing to its bones. She's learned to deal with the way the world is by developing a layer of snark, like so many other people. Most of her soft spots are reserved for the animals she occasionally cares for.

Relationship between Cairn and Meera:
They are absolutely not two halves of the whole. They are more complementary than anything else. Meera is rash, where Cairn is studied silence. Someone as... oblivious to human nature as Cairn is-----dare I say 'innocent'?-----needs someone more pessimistic and cynical like Meera around.

Plus, I like having pairs who argue like lots.

Username: FerretPrince
Pet Type: Guardian (custom, non-growing)
Pet Name: ??? Not sure yet...
Gender (for deer): Female
What you're looking for: Silver dapple grey horse Something like this. biggrin
Same horse
His name is Magic, apparently?
As you can see, he is very pretty
I just really love the way Rejam does dapples. The first reference is closest to what I like, color-wise. He looks darker in that picture.
-Glowing light purple eyes
Do you have a preference for totem pose? 2

Bribe: +100k
Roleplaying Notes: I think her Chosen will be part of my Wardwood astrology concept.

Personality:

Cruel? Kind? These words mean as much to her as the pheromones of ants mean to humans. They simply don't translate to Silence. Neither does her name, to be honest. Her true name can't be so easily pronounced. The closest approximation is silence itself but, since it's incredibly difficult for humans to communicate via not talking, she will accept the title of Silence.

Nature is not kind. Nature is not cruel. Nature simply is, without wrapping itself up in the confusing values of morality. The world does not care that a baby bird dies in the cold snow; it only cares that the world keeps spinning and the bird's death makes certain of it. As it decays, it gives its life back unto the world, providing nutrients to the soil. The ants carry away bits of its bone and flesh, giving life to the colony. In turn, they are eaten by birds and other animals. The cycle continues.

That is how Silence sees the world. Not as a distinct event here and there, but rather as a continuous series of events, each one affecting the other. To understand why the baby bird fell, she would explain how, long ago, a fungus took root in the branch of the tree, slowly weakening it through the years. A cold breeze blew at the exact moment, cracking the branch in two. And Silence would explain this all, quite enthusiastically, completely missing out that some humans might find the topic of dead baby birds upsetting. She'd be extremely surprised to learn that anyone would get angry at her for not saving the little bird. She'd be surprised that anyone even considers saving it, to be completely honest.

She's not sadistic. That's another word that has no place in her world. Nature is red in tooth and claw, and extremely unforgiving. She's simply very devoted to making certain that the spirit world and the human world both keep turning. It's not simply a personal thing for her. It's a physical thing as well. Literally. When the world is out of balance, she will feel extremely uncomfortable and disconnected. This aura, this spiritual balance, is as much of a sense for her as Up and Down is for humans. Just as humans always know which way is Up, so Silence always knows when something is upset in the balance of the world. It's a bit like having the tag of a shirt constantly scratching and scrabbling, only its under her flesh and bone, in her brain.

Personality: From a human perspective, she completely lacks a sense of personal space. That's a human thing, not an animal thing, or even a spirit thing. If she likes someone, Silence will hang all over them, constantly getting in their way. She leans, nosebumps, will stand right where you need to go in order to get your attention. She is very affectionate. Of course, if she doesn't like you, she has absolutely no problems kicking you. Or biting. Or trying to harm you any damn way she can. 'Pity' and 'mercy' are other human concepts she has no time to learn. If she thinks you are a threat, she will do whatever she can to make sure you cease to be a threat.

Most of all, she adores hearing stories about herself and how great she is. She's extraordinarily vain; why shouldn't she be? Isn't she beautiful? Isn't she a true queen in her land of spirits? Then why shouldn't she be told so? To her, it's not vanity. It's simply a fact. Avoiding saying so would be like avoiding the color of the sky or how water is wet. If she's told otherwise, she'll assume the speaker is an idiot and unable to understand basic facts.

At best, she's capricious. Her moods are as changeable as the breeze.

She tends not to think about the consequences of her actions. She wants thing. She gets thing. She doesn't understand that she needs to pay money for thing. She is stronger than someone else who has the thing, so why should she not take what she wants? Planning ahead is certainly not her forte.

Tact? Oh, honey... no. There is no tact in nature. Silence has absolutely no brain-mouth filter. Again, why should she be ashamed of saying things as they are? Nature also has no problem with sex. Her poor Kelvin is constantly told things like, “Wait. Why are those humans wearing Not Pants? Skirts? What are they for? Oh! Those are female humans! How clever! Do they wear skirts to allow males easier access? Kelvin, why do you never breed? Are you never in season? QUICK. THAT MALE IS APPROACHING YOUR FEMALES. DEFEND YOUR HAREM. Wait, you are turning a funny color. Is that to attract females' attention? Ooo! It's working! Keep going! Ooo now you're making sputtering sounds. Is that a challenge to the other males? Is that a mating call? Oh! I've got it! You're trying to attract the males' attention!”

She talks. A lot. She's a little chatterbox without a filter.

She literally doesn't understand that humans work differently from other animals. Her Chosen frequently attempts to correct her but she doesn't understand.

Kelvin: “No, dear, human mating rituals are a bit more complicated. For example, we generally require a few weeks of emotional foreplay before even considering getting into bed.”

Silence: “What? No, of course humans are still like any other animal. They just put fancy words around it. It still boils down to males impressing females and females choosing. Or males impressing males. Or females impressing females.” (She does understand non-reproductive sex; after all, it's only natural).

Basically, talking to her is a bit like having a NatGeo program in your head all the time.

Her Kelvin is her yardstick to measure humans by. Is he putting on pants at this hour? Clearly, that means ALL humans wear pants at this hour. Is he sad? Whatever made him sad makes ALL humans sad. She relies on him heavily for understanding how humans and human society works. Social cues? She gets them from Kelvin, even if she doesn't always regard them. She also doesn't really notice the difference between male and female humans, to be honest. They look more or less the same to her.

Chosen:
Chosen:
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Appearance: hello, tall, dark, and handsome. Standing just a hair under six feet tall, Kelvin is a rather imposing figure of a man. He's spent a lot of his life in the army and it shows. Basically, he's built like a house. Unfortunately, those aren't the only rewards of war he's received; he's quite scarred, including on his face.
[will fill out more later; this is just to give a basic idea, I guess.]

If he'd been born in another world, Kelvin would have been a knight. He is honorable, trustworthy, bold, and hide-bound. Look, things have been traditional for thousands of years. A million dead people can't be wrong, right? As it is, fate has led him to the path of the army. He's a captain, or at least was before being Chosen. He wishes he wasn't so good at killing other people, really he does. In battle, as a soldier, he was always very good at keeping calm in dangerous situations.

See, fact is, Kelvin is a sweetheart. He's very mild, rather quiet, and would much prefer to spend his days quietly reading or listening to music. He regrets that he has absolutely no talent for art or music, but appreciates it in others. As the youngest son of a noble family, he enjoyed the curious mixture of an excellent education, and the expectation of doing absolutely nothing with it. He decided this was... inadequate. He wanted to change the world for the better and decided the army was the best place for him.

Socially, he's a bit awkward and shy. See, he's one of those people who lives in constant fear that there are rules and he is always breaking them by accident. Regency era was quite a one for social etiquette. He does his best to get along and, since he's worried about breaking those rules, he tends to be quite quiet. When something doesn't follow the typical social script, he feels positively lost (women have opinions? When did that become a thing?) and tends to retreat even more into his own private sanctuary.

Unlike his Guardian, Kelvin is rather modest. He dislikes talking about his military victories (they make him think of the lives lost; there's no joy to be found in bragging about death). If the conversation does turn towards himself, he does his best to redirect it towards something else.

In a more relaxed social setting, he can be open and friendly. He quite enjoys puns and wordplay. It just takes a bit of time for him to open up. Since he spends a lot of his time apologizing for Silence, this might take a while.

With his obedience to social rules and mores, he is the perfect Chosen for Silence; he gives her a view into the human realm, with all of its wonderful complexity and confusion. Silence, on the other hand, gives Kelvin a chance to play peacekeeper instead of warmaker. He relishes the new role, as he tries to find a common ground between the spirit world and the human world.

[Silence is my Seelie Queen entry. Waiting on the contest close before doing anything with her or her chosen.]
