Maslin
Name: Maslin
Race: Dovaa/Orderite Hybrid
Gender: Male
Clan: Peisio
Class: Mage
Appearance:( outdated) Maslin is a young boy of average height for his age and lineage, though he is a bit pudgy. His shaggy hair is a sort of creamy orange that looks brighter in sunlight and resembles a sort of pale pumpkin. His skin though still fair is a touch darker than one might see on a pure blooded orderite. Maslin also sports amber eyes, a smattering of orangish red patches of scales and a similarly coloured crown of horns. Like all of those with orderite blood Maslin bears an elaborate tattoo on his back that transforms into an equally fancy pair of wings.
Personality:( outdated)
For all that he’s still quite young Maslin is an awful lot like that grumpy old man who wants those damned kids off his lawn. He’s filled with sighs and grumbles not unlike the bellows and territorial roars of dragons. It’s not uncommon to see him preface social interactions with a roll of his eyes and a low voiced mutter or sigh. He’s generally not all that impressed with other people and isn't shy about this fact. People are often unreliable, violent and cruel, not traits Maslin finds particularly appealing in potential companions. Or at least that is what Maslin has come to believe, being raised on the move much of his early opinions of non family was based around the gossip he heard while helping his family barter. Unable to stick around and get to know people Maslin was often left with the impression that most people were cheaters and drunks and the like. This combined with some childhood bullying over his less than pure origins put a pretty negative spin in people from Maslin's point of view. An adult would see the bigger picture about the world, Maslin sees only in small chunks of personal experiences and hearsay.
If you earn his trust or interest Maslin is usually good for some decent conversations about topics he's keen on, still there's an air of cynicism to him that never fades. Earning his trust usually means being consistent. If you're the kind of person who he sees tending to a hurt animal but later catches drunkenly harassing someone he's not going to trust you. It's not even about being nice per say, it's about if your actions follow a consistent pattern. Not lying to or trying to hide things from him helps as well. If you give him some advice that turns out to be good he's more likely to take you at your word the next time he sees you. He's almost never going to blindly trust anyone upon just meeting them but repeated exposure to a person who doesn't act noticeably different each time builds trust. Maslin craves stability in his relationships and to get close to him you have to have shown you can be counted on.
For the most part the young hybrid is social on his own terms even if that doesn't make him the most popular person.
Despite being grouchy and on the cusp of puberty with all it's hormones Maslin is not a violent kid. He'll snipe at you and glare but physical confrontations are not in the cards unless he has to defend himself. Maslin in general avoids confrontation and is more than content to look the other way when people are fighting, he's really not the person to ask to settle your debates for you either. For all that he bitches at other people Maslin never goes looking to start an argument and doesn't feel the need to make sure his voice is the loudest heard when people are airing opinions.
Maslin is attracted to broken things and is happiest when left with a mess of mangled materials and broken parts that must be put back together ever so carefully. He enjoys the understanding that is gained from deconstructing something and then restoring it to it's original state. Fixing things especially stuff with finicky little parts gives Maslin a sort of glee and sense of accomplishment he cannot find elsewhere in his life. Of course the process of improving a thing that was once broken is also enjoyable and lets Maslin express his creative side. The young boy rarely makes truly new stuff but tries to find ways to make things he already knows better.
Though not possessed of great bedside manner Maslin is interested in healing, as people are also complicated things which break down from time to time. Combining these two interests is an interesting prospect and as he ages Maslin will attempt to make contraptions for the injured and disabled.
Maslin is an ok student, he does his best to pay attention to whoever is teaching him at the time and he's quite responsive to subjects that engage him the right way. Subjects that really bore him make Maslin's mind wander though and there's no forcing concepts into his brain. There's just some things Maslin will never care enough understand. People who boast about their intellect irritate Maslin but he begrudgingly respects those who are smarter than himself. He isn't above asking for help when he really wants to understand something either though he tries to pick people who won't tease him about not getting it.
Physical prowess is not exactly Maslin's forte, he's got dexterous fingers and good hand eye coordination but that's it. He's the last kid you're going to see voluntarily climbing a tree to rescue a stuck toy or pet and the first kid hitching a ride home instead of walking the extra bit of the way. Maslin has to find motivation to perform physical activities and often enough there isn't any or at least not enough to have kept him from putting on some weight. Not that Maslin is overly concerned about looks.
Young and jaded there is much about the world Maslin has yet to experience and understand. He has his views and his goals but only time will tell how they may shift as he matures. For right now he's just the grumbling boy fixing the mechanized doll of some girl he barely even knows the name of and probably won't remember.
Background:How Maslin's parents met and how he came to be is apparently a talk for when he is older or so he's been told. He knows only that his father is a dovaa and absent from his life, a fact which brings his mother only sadness when mentioned.
Maslin grew up on the move as it were. His mother was part of a family of traveling Orderite traders and she'd not wanted to be left behind during her pregnancy. Maslin's early childhood is a series of fuzzy memories of places and people he can't quite be sure he knows the names of. With so much moving in and out of his life every few weeks Maslin clung to the things that were always stable, his family. These people were his teachers, his friends and not a one of them ever game him dirty looks, called him names or tried to bully him. It was from family that he learned of the state of the world, the great engagement and how it effected even those who chose not to fight. First hand experience as he aged continued to teach Maslin that the peoples of Magesc were not always the sort he wanted to befriend and even the normally friendly Orderites could be unpleasant people.
Natural curiosity over the years lead to Maslin taking interest in trying to fix his families occasionally broken wares. With a great deal of time on his hands there was often little else to do but try and figure out why a watch had stopped ticking. Too young to be a great craftsman like one of his uncles Maslin has set about being useful in his own way and lightening the load on his family as he knows traveling with him is a burden.
Maslin has currently set for himself a fairly unambitious future continuing the family trade, how or if that may yet change is unknown.
