It peeks out of the tundra only slightly, like the broken ribs of an ancient titan. To reach it requires days of travel through the bitterest cold of Kishu, and a bravery that many men have forgotten.

It is an ancient place; its origins steeped in darkness, and the foundation of the darkness that birthed the curse of Necromancy. Here is where the first of them stood, besieged and hungry and in terror, no more than frightened soldiers praying for rescue, when a presence blew in on black clouds from the cold... and it made them an offer they would not refuse.

Now, Fort Adelarde is buried under feet of snow and entombed in plated ice. Beneath the frost lies the fort's ruins, and the mass grave that surrounds it. Thousands of bodies lay their, buried in the tundra, mummified as husks... most of them the corpses from the war long past, but others tell a different story.

The dry, cold, dilapidated interior of the ruins tell two different stories, each intertwined. Tables of ghastly tools; soil stained brackish brown from the pools of blood that congregated beneath the screaming victims of a man driven mad in his rabid racism and hatred. This was once the lair of a serial killer, a Necromancer named Besrim Halgar. It is also his tomb, and the man who killed him has finally returned.

Now, the lightless dark inside of the ruins breathes with a haunting and inexplicable life. Voices belonging to no creature whisper, and they cavort in frightfully joyous harmony. In its deepest buried place, at the bottom of the fort's labyrinthine skeleton, there are signs of activity. Pieces of machinery salvaged from various locations. The coals of a dead but recent firepit. A bedroll... and beside the bedroll, a beautiful feminine creature still loved and grieved by her people is frozen in repose. It is the corpse of Lady Azur Bascule, slain Lady of The Devil's Eye Desert, but preserved that she seems only to be sleeping. The shadows cradle her crystal grave, and sing her songs of silence.

He returns...

The shadows sighed; the depth of their non-existent lungs expelling a figure from the flux of their blackness. It was Krayth, and he emerged on his bedroll, legs crossed, eyes turned down upon the dead woman of his dreams.

He said nothing. He did not need to. As the Anima sat in silence, caressed by the pulsing darkness the engulfed the lightless room, he set his hands -warmth despite the cold- upon her crystal casing. There they remained, fingers spread, reaching to touch what was beyond his grasp.

He had returned. A shuffling followed above ground, snow being shaken from a form wrapped in furs. Downward it moved, until it reached near where the man of shadows resided. Krayth would feel a prescence near him. He would only need look up to see a human-like form wrapped in furs, no features to give away who it might be.

He heard it before he saw it, and then saw it through the eyes of his kin.

He was gone before the figure could see or speak to him, swallowed by the black to emerge elsewhere. Behind the imposter. The cretin would be unable to see it in the dark, but the sensation of a razor edge pressing firmly in through the furs at its neck would be unmistakable. Before blood was drawn, the sword gave pause. The Anima's Exodus growled, the sound sybillant and strange as it hissed. Within that sound were the strained, distant screams of souls stolen long ago.

"Die," they said in unison, as the Exodus's form erupted outwards, its throat-facing edge shifting from that of a knife to a guillotine spade in the breadth of a heartbeat to hack through fur and flesh alike.

Lady Liliana of Ernya, Sage Elementalist

Wind blasted back at Krayth to try and pin him to the wall before a move could be made in attack. Hands covered in fur reached inward to pull the hood up and off, exposing light purple hair on a darker skinned woman. "Krayth, you should know better than that. Everyone thinks you dead, my friend. Everyone but the last one to know the truth." Liliana let the wind die out so Krayth wouldn't be blasted anymore as she turned to face him.

"Then why deceive me Liliana?" Krayth snarled, recoiling from the wall. His eyes pulsed in the tenebrous space, and though he did not move against her again the sinister guillotine form of Beyruun remained in his hand, at the ready. "Bandits came. Necromancers. I killed them. I'll kill anyone that trespasses here. Too much is at stake... why have you come? To dissuade me?"

"Deceive you?" she asked, slightly confused. She prodded into his mind, seeing how she looked to him. She blushed, not realizing how menacing she had looked. "I'm sorry but I did not come in this to deceive you. It was to keep warm waiting for you without wasting my energy." Using his eyes, she looked upon the crystallized repose of his late wife. "I come with advice. And a warning. If you willing to listen to both." She shuffled a little, unable to verbally say what she still wanted to say. And to see you still alive. Especially after that day, she mentally added into his mind. Her mental words would carry with them the shame, sadness, and pain of what that day meant to her. While she herself was not crying, you could almost hear the tears in her mental voice. She didn't know why but her work and connection with Krayth made it easier to expose a few of the holes in her "powerful" appearance.

He did not share her gift. The Void Lord could hear her voice inside of him, but her sorrow was distant and slight to him. He knew she could see into his mind, and there was no way to hide the truth. In the past 2 months, the Anima had set out on a path to acquire knowledge by any means necessary. His memories bled together in a blur of violence and torment; scholars of vivification tortured for their findings, Necromancers' insides turned out to force them to use their magic in his presence; hermit priests sacrificed on their own altars for their refusal to help. There was no remorse or regret throughout any of it. There was only determination.

"I once wished there was another way." His voice echoed firm through the crumbling Halls. "I realized there was no alternative. No one is willing to go the distance required. No one will understand the choices I have to make. No one could with themselves, knowing what I am required to do... but in death, I am exonerated. No one will know. I can bring her back; restore our people, and give them the freedom from Fate they deserve. There is no other way." It sounded like there was an apology riding on his voice, but it never came.

"Say what you came to say. I will listen."

Liliana nodded, deciding to sit as she spoke. "Her body will need to be made whole before you can even attempt to bring her back. Otherwise, if you succeed, she will die again but more painfully." She ungloved a hand and showed Krayth the white healing threads he would be familiar with. "You know what little healing I can do and how if holds no ill for light and dark alike. I have a more powerful for of it that can mend flesh that has been completely removed from someone. Lost limbs, organs, what have you." The threads faded away as she put her glove back on. "I will help you if you truly have looked at all the options. If you truly feel you can rip her from Fate's Fabric." Liliana stood up. "But know this, my friend. There is always a chance you do more damage than good in this endeavor. Anything from getting back a living husk to rewriting your people's history." She knew first hand how attempting to defy Fate could turn out but she kept that silent. She walked over, putting a gloved hand on his shoulder. "Even losing your son to regain his mother. There are few channels you can try that could bring her back without such repercussions. I just ask you truly look at those first."

"Do not mend her!" The Anima shouted, raising his knife in the instant that Liliana raised her threaded hand. He recoiled just as immediately, and in her mind the Seer would see the primal flash of alarm dashing over Krayth's thoughts. He lowered Beyruun as quickly as he raised It. "Not yet... I will not have her made whole just to rot, empty. I am not ready. I have the knowledge of Necromancers, but I know their methods will not bring her back as she was. I have knowledge of holy resurrection, but her soul has gone too far unto the Dead Lands. I..."

He drifted off, at the mention of a boy. His boy. Liliana would see such potent fear and love at once that it defied human sense. Which made sense. Neither one was human. "I have a son..." Joy welled up in the cracks of his black foundation. It was captured under a suppressing sea of doubt. "Should I see him? So much is at stake... too much. No, not yet... I cant." It was tragically heartless, the resolve that love gave him to curb his own longing. He was back to himself -the shadow of- and his words were composed and urgent. "Time is what I need, and what I lack. You are being vague, Liliana. I know you do so to protect us, but I need you to relinquish the full truth. Trust that I can do this. My mind is clear. I will not misstep. What channels do you speak of, and how can I find them?"

"There is only evil in action,

Lady Liliana of Ernya, Sage Elementalist

"If you feel her soul has gone too far into the land of the dead, then there's only a myth left to you," she said as his emotions lay bare to her mental sight. "And yes. You should see your son before you attempt this. In case Fate has you pay the toll of this task with your own blood." Liliana looked away, seeming to gaze on Azur without actually being able to see her. "I'm glad you appreciate why I give information how I do. It's not a happy life to be as I am. But if you wish for the full truth, you may have it. But I will have to explain it as I see it myself." She sat down, back to her friend so she could focus. She opened her mind to him, allowing him a slight glimpse into what she sees. "This path, this stitch you make in the Fabric of Life crosses many patterns. Those of all the tribes of Devil's Eye, those of your family both living and dead, those who live willing to help you, and those you have slain. Where you intersect with Azur's final stitch, it touches many of those patterns." A tapestry filled with images so small one would have to live many lifetimes to see them all, came to Krayth's mind. It got closer, showing him the battles with the Blood Barons, his union to Azur, and the figure behind them as they stood dressed in the mantle of leadership. The shadow of life and death. The piece began to move, drawing Krayth to where Azur took her last breath, life still growing within her. From that one image grew Adellos crowned with light, a small serpent boy clutching a woman Krayth wouldn't know, the battle with Ivy, Liliana helping with the dark ritual that darkened Triwind's skies, and Sephra's fall. "If Azur did not die that day, as she was meant to..." A ghostly hand reached into view and plucked Azur from the tapestry. The image changed to Azur, still alive and round with child. Adellos became a dead man's stare, Triwinds held sunny skies but overgrown with vines and plants, and Sephra stood over Jiaum's crater to direct scores of new soldiers. "This is only one version to the many I see. I will show you the worst possible one, if you wish. But only if you think you can survive such a thing."

During the course of these visions, the Anima had gone from standing to sitting, Beyruun gripped tightly with Its blade lain over his lap. "Don't hold back. I did not come this far to let Fate triumph over me. I will not fail. Show me everything!"

"Remember your decision. And do not think any less of me for doing this," she whispered. The hand returned, tapping the image of Azur. Beneath that singular contact, the fabric began to unravel. Ghostly figures were unleashed from the fraying of thread and stitch as what remained started to stain a dark red. The threads dyed red started move on their own, reweaving the spot ripped from them into a new and much worse image. Now there was no Azur image at all. No child with the eyes of his lover. The tribes of the desert laying in blood-drenched sands as an unholy night lay over the entire nation. Blood Barons walked again, aiding the very ones they had already slain to protect the world. And in the middle of it all stood a young boy, who wore upon his belt the heads of three people: two men and a woman. All of them held a unnatural visage. Otherworldly would better explain it. And not but a couple steps away lay Krayth, worshiping this man as Beyrunn ripped open another body behind him with no thought from Krayth. The image faded away, leaving Krayth to look at the room around him without the mental intrusion. "I know you believe Fate has one simple plan for everything but Fate is merely the result of the actions we take. We cannot run from what our actions bring us, Krayth. We can only hope to make the action that will change that Fate for us. What you seek to do is destroy the past, something Fate does all it can to protect. If you truly want for this, I will look into that myth I mentioned to help you. But I cannot tell in certain terms what will come of trying this. Because there are no certain terms to it." She hung her head. "I know this myself through experience. I will not give detail but suffice to say I still pay for my error."

The Anima's head was slumped forward. What purple-orange plasmoid light usually show from his eyes flickered as they rolled back in their sockets, and in the dark a warm curl of spittle fell from his mouth to his hand. Beyruun did not mirror its master's silence. There was a rasping, rushing sound, as though the Exodus were panting off an ecstatic and joyful climax.

When it was over, he did not stir. His head swooned upward, taking in his surroundings, gray in the darkness of their tenebrous passage, illuminated through the gift of his Second Sight. The smell of frozen flesh, ice, and rust brought him back as if from a waking nightmare. Beyruun immediately fell silent as its sibling regained control of his faculties. He wiped the drool from his mouth using the corner of one black sleeve, and looked up at Liliana. What she would see within in might be cause for alarm, or cause for relief. Horror, and a determination more resolved than ever before.

"Now I know the price of failure. I will ensure it never comes to pass. Please, Liliana, tell me of the myth you speak of... and tell me how I may bring the Blood Barons back. You have opened my eyes to the consequences of my path. You have also made me aware of how to better the odds. If I can test this myth against the Barons and kill them now, in the present, there will be no chance of their return in the future."

Was what he speaking madness, or was it something more? If this was truly how Fate would react to his incursion, then he could begin elsewhere, test the threads of Fate against foes he knew, and knew how to best, and then they would be unmade... but the parallels threads left potential for ruin everywhere. She could see the thoughts in his head. If he brought the Barons back now to slay them again, would that test the solidarity of the tribes? Would it undo the first past of their rise and fall, or would that history be preserved if they were instead restored through Necromancy? The cogs whirred, but the only one with answers stood before him.

Liliana went over to Krayth, seeing the pain she had unwillingly inflicted on his mind. She gathered him into her arms, holding him as his mind tried to process how her own worked. Calm feelings worked to help sooth the mental trauma inflicted. "That was only the worst of what could happen," she said softly as she stroked his hair. "The myth I speak of is from my old world. It spoke of a being with the power to rewrite Fate itself. I assume it was talking about a seer and a seer's connection to Fate but always what if. What if a seer has the potential to unlock the ability to be the forcing hand to change Fate's outcome? I haven't had much chance to study here in Rykros but there's suppose to be a lost archive somewhere in the world that would have that kind of information."
