This thread is not to debate if something is godmodding or not. It's already been discussed with someone who is both staff for the thread it occurred in and crew for this guild.

I still have been left bewildered and unable to see the distinction as to why...

1) a harmful physical action where the attacked character is not given an opportunity to negate damage/death is considered godmodding

2) making fundamental changes to someone else's character sheet without their permission is not considered godmodding

In my mind, either both should be godmodding or neither, and trying to sort out why one is and the other is not is only giving me a logic malfunction. However I accept that #1 is goodmodding and that #2 is not even if I do not understand why this is the case.

I realize that I probably could have just sent someone a PM. However if I'm confused by this, there may be others that would be similarly confused thus could also benefit from having it explained. ^^

Godmodding is essentially having a Mary-Sue (Gary-Stu). You have this one perfect character that seems to control everything. Keyword "control".

So to answer your question, I do believe that the second is considered godmodding as well, if s/he made changes in your character without your permission that gave their character a benefit or your character a handicap. That's my opinion and I don't know exactly if it is.

Sometimes I wold let it slide if they made a slight change to the character's past without my permission. Like something unimportant like having a girlfriend (it has happened before, when one character was in the middle of trying to convince someone else's character that my character was straight. xD I liked it, and it was hilarious, so I didn't do anything.) or something that didn't have long-term effects.

A non-Gaia thing I was looking at, if it helps.

        I'm sorry if that makes no sense, by the way! ^^;;

I'm talking about major changes...

In my case, I technically need to go rewrite an entire character sheet and throw out all the world building stuff just to turn my IC self into a soulless beast that was the result of a pact with the devil... pretty much in blood range mode all the time, eat and kill, no dialogue, crosses & holy water work.

In another case, someone else had someone decide for them that their character has peculiar blood. What does this mean? The owner of the character couldn't tell me because she doesn't know.

These types of things ARE NOT GODMODDING, even when the person making the change without permission is not crew/staff to the thread in question. I am not here to dispute or argue with things that have already been ruled by annual ball crew as 100% valid [i.e. not godmodding.]

However it was not explained to me as to why making fundamental changes to someone else's character without their permission is not godmodding, and I made this thread because I feel that there might be others that could also benefit from such an explanation.

I'm the RPer whose character turned out to have weird blood...I let it stay because I actually thought that was pretty cool! Basically, you are ultimately the master of what it is and is not okay for other people to do to your character's background, etc. If you're not okay with what they have in store for you, it is 100% okay and acceptable, and even EXPECTED, for you to pull the plug and say "That ain't happening in a million years!"

Natalie (my character in question) being from a special bloodline was something that I thought was kind of cool...and I'm still waiting for the guy who sprung this on me to come and explain the rest so I'll know what the heck my character should do about it. But even though the guy I was RPing with sprung it on me completely out of the blue, if I didn't like the way he was writing it, you'd better BELIEVE I'd have pulled the plug on that plot line! In the same way, I would be ROYALLY ticked if somebody came in and decided to make her a villain or something. You can be assured I would set them straight on that so fast their brain would explode!

Bottom line: If somebody foists a twist on your character unexpectedly and you hate it and it's not going to work for you, tell them they're godmodding and they can buzz off. If it's something you kind of like, let it slide. Ultimately what happens to your character is your call.

I hope that made sense. sweatdrop

Well then, no offence, but that's stupid.
You can't change a character without the character's creator and the thread creator's permission, because we have a plot and characters are part of the plot. Changing a character that's not your own is godmodding.

Usually, if you want to do something with another character, you should talk to the character's owner and the owner of the thread, to make sure that that change is OKAY, because you honestly can't have something that doesn't work out for the roleplayer. If it's not your character, your don't have the right to do anything to that character unless you've been given prior permission.

If you do want to change a character, you should at least explain WHY a character is being changed, how it fits, what that means for the character, and work out the details on BOTH SIDES of the change, which includes the ROLEPLAYER of the character.

I'm going to take a guess that this godmodding happened in the café thread we have. It's not so much a guess, but whatever. If someone said Leigh (my character that I've been neglecting a bit. ><) was a fairy that lived 5000 years ago and is now pretending to be a college graduate, I would snap at them and correct them both IC and OOC. Leigh is human because I made her human. Someone can't stroll in and change her genes.

Anyway, I agree with Alv. Even if it's not godmodding, it's "illegal" RP-wise. You control your own character (who isn't perfect, by the way. Give them some faults) and only your character. Anything else is not public domain.

Sorry if I'm a little worked up. ><
        I reaalllyy dislike godmodding. xD

I thought you were telling me the complete opposite last night and that the weirdo blood thing was being used to illustrate the point. >.< Being both staff in the thread and crew in this guild, I considered it to be a 100% official decision that it's not godmodding to the extent that anyone can rewrite anyone else's character all they want.

When I do get invited to RP, 9 times out of 10 they want me to do Twilight OCs with them so yes that is a real concern for me. I don't want some Twihard showing up and rewriting me, and it's not realistic to poll people before entering a thread to make sure that nobody is going to do that to me. sweatdrop *worries more about sparkles than evil*

Okay, you explain things better than Alv does... [Yes, it was the cafe but that's moot. I won't be returning to avoid further conflict with someone who I don't think is going to budge on her opinion on how my character should function. I'm also not part of the club/group that gets to do RPs, so I technically didn't actually belong there in the first place.]

        Haha, thanks, I think. xD
Ahh, the café was part of the Advertising committee. The host club's event wrapped up a few days ago, and I'm in the process of continuing it in Barton Town, so yeah.

And absolutely. If you don't feel comfortable returning to the girl that's messing with your character, I wouldn't push you into it. You should always have control over your own character.
Although maybe we can let the person know that what she's doing is godmodding? It's always stressful to have to deal with a godmodder in RPs. ><

I'm not part of the advertising committee either, so the point still stands that I technically don't belong in any of the RP threads. [and I do not think she's going to be a problem anyway unless she runs into more undead characters.]

The explanation she gave me via PM is that most people know that vampires are the result of deals with Satan. Not those words exactly.

Unfortunately, I probably won't be roleplaying again until the annual ball itself [assuming a room host is willing to accept someone with roleplaying experience that is infrequent at best.] No, this is not meant to be taken as a pity party that room hosts be willing to accept that or that the committees here that do RP should let me RP with them so that I can practice... I'll try to figure something out.

        LOL
I know how you feel. o:
I'm usually okay with groups, but I was in this RP that was so fast-paced at first that there were literally 2394329 posts per day and you had to write out 2+ posts per day to keep up. It was crazy.
        BUT SO FUN. 8D
But it slowed down to a stop now, and I think we're restarting.

Before the 10th Ball, I literally have only done roleplays that were either 1x1 or very small groups. I am really only used to something like no more than four people with a turn rotation cycle, and everyone just politely waits for their turn to come up. I am currently weighing my options.
