Maergrethe slid into Potions class just moments before the class was to start. She was a bit annoyed that her normal seat was taken and had to take a seat near the back. She tried to ignore all the looks she was getting from the boys around her. What were they all staring at? Surely they had seen a girl before!
She busied herself by taking out her quill, ink and parchment paper to take notes when the class began. She rather hoped that today was going to be one of those hands on days, as she was getting tired of taking notes. She turned her attention to the professor when she entered the room.
"Class today we will be brewing the Cure Boil Potion, the team of students that brew it correctly will receive 30 points for their House. First off, let's get you paired up."
Maergrethe was excited, she couldn't wait to actually get to make a potion. She just hoped she'd get a competent partner. She gathered her stuff back up and put it in her bag, and pulled her book out to look over the instructions in the book while she waited to hear who she was partnered up with.
"Mr. Alden and Ms. Linwood," Called the teacher almost immediately which surprised her. She glanced around wondering who her partner was, she didn't think she had met him yet, though she did remember a kid in the Ravenclaw House with the last name Alden. It would be great if it was the same Alden, two ravenclaws working together would ensure them getting those extra points.

Like always, Taylor sat in the back of the classroom, farthest from the teacher's eye. Unlike the other boys who sat back in Potions, it wasn't because Taylor wanted to fool around and joke--just the opposite, in fact. He would read ahead in the potion's book (sometimes even bringing along the potion's book Aunt Hecate bought for him). First year potion's was sadly boring for him--he'd been working with a lot of these ingredients just shortly after he was able to speak.
Must've been late, Taylor thought to himself, immediately drawn to the single girl sitting in the boy cave--not because she was female, per say, but because of the strange way the other boys ostracized her. She'll return to her seat tomorrow, and with that, Taylor didn't give the girl further thought.
Professor Fairfront, an elderly woman of African American descent, started explaining their task for today. Cure boil potion... Dried nettles, six snake fangs, four horned slugs, and two porcupine quills, Taylor automatically thought as soon as she mentioned the potion's name.
He was ready to gather the ingredients when Professor Fairfront started naming off pairs. Ah... he thought, somewhat mournful. It was easier for him to work alone in potions--not that he had anything against his classmates, exactly... "Mr. Alden and Ms. Linwood," Professor Fairfront announced before moving on to the next group. Linwood, Maergrethe; Ravenclaw, He remembered, his eyes going to the girl in the back. If he remembered correctly, that was her. The girl who was running late.
As soon as Professor Fairfront dismissed them, Taylor stood up (without even bothering to grab his potion's book) from where he was sitting and made his way over to Maergrethe. I'm Taylor Alden, I don't think we officially met," He started, extending his hand for her to shake. "You're Maergrethe Linwood, correct?"

Maergrethe twisted a lock of her hair, glancing around at the boys around her. Surely Mr. Alden wasn't one of these snot nosed brats who were looking around in confusion. "A little help here God?" She prayed under her breathe as she glanced around once more.
Maer glanced up in surprise when the boy started to introduce himself. She was rather stunned to see that he had the loveliest looking eyes she'd ever seen in her life. Not to mention that soft brown hair that had fallen directly over the middle of his forehead. She itched to reach out and brush it back out of his face, but instead clutched to her bag.
"Oh, why yes." she replied blinking like a deer caught unaware and then shot him a smile. "It's nice to meet you," She replied with a small flutter of her thick purple eyelashes and then pushed her bag up on her shoulder. "Shall I go grab a pot then? Or would you prefer I gather the ingredients? I have no preference either way. I'm not the squeamish type."

Maergrethe seemed started when he spoke to her and he couldn't help but feel somewhat bad for this--he hadn't meant to alarm her... though, he didn't understand why she would be alarmed by him. Perhaps she was deep in thought? Taylor could relate, he had his spaced out moments as well. Or... perhaps she didn't know who he was? That would explain it, Taylor noted. He wasn't offended that someone didn't know who he was--he didn't make a point to stand out during classes and generally sat where no one else could see him.
He was at least a bit relieved to see that Maergrethe was a Ravenclaw--it meant either she was going to be able to help him or she was at least going to put up a nice effort. "I'll gather the ingredients, could you please get the pewter couldron? He inquired, glancing over his shoulder to see how the line was near the ingredients. So far, there wasn't any. "I'll be right back," He gave her an apologetic smile for leaving without giving her a chance to respond.
While up, he found his way over to the ingredients, grabbed a tray, and started plucking snake fangs up--keeping a watchful eye out for impurities in the calcium as he did.Six of these, he noted to himself, placing the six fangs in the mortar and pestle he had on his ingredient tray. Next were the four horned slugs and without any queasiness at all, he stuck his hand in the jar of slugs and picked four average sized ones out. With that all together, he picked up the two porcupine quills and then a few dried nettles. In the line behind him, he could hear the other kids' grunts of dismay when they came across the slugs.
Once he was done, Taylor made his way back to Maergrethe who had hopefully gathered the cauldron by now and offered her the mortar and pestle. "We're supposed to crush the fangs--would you like to do it?" He held the mortar and pestle in his hand, waiting for Maergrethe to take it.
Perhaps I should be friendlier, Taylor wondered, looking his housemate. Or maybe I'm being too polite... He was never that comfortable with people he didn't know and he was usually too aware of them for his own good. "Have you had a chance to read the instructions?" He inquired, still rather politely.

Maergrethe was a bit annoyed with herself for startling when he had approached her. She didn't want him thinking she was a spaz and had been off in La La Land.
Maergrethe shot him a smile when he request her to get the pewter cauldron. "Not a problem Taylor." She said demurely and made her way swiftly over to where the pots were all stacked in the back corner of the room. She looked over the pots and didn't settle on one until she found the perfect one. She wasn't going to have their potion fail because they had a cauldron that was all worn out on the bottom.
She knew there were impatient kids behind her but she wasn't about to hurry. "Hold your horses..the art of potions is all in the pot." She told them with a roll of her eyes.
After about five minutes of looking she finally found the perfect one and made her way over to the counter where she had left her book bag. She shot a smile at Taylor when he came back and laid down the supplies on the counter. "Sure I can do that." She replied and pushed up the sleeves of her shirt and got to work crushing the fangs with the mortar and pestil.
"Umm..I've read it several times over the past couple of weeks. What about you?" She asked with a competitive glint in her eyes.
