He has long bangs that fall over his forehead and sideburns framing his face.
During the days of hard travel after he and his teammates were forced to leave Iwagakure no Sato, Shinratsu had eaten much less, and had gotten more thin. Thankfully, after he was fed well in Konoha, the frailty had disappeared, even though he still remains thinner than when he was in Iwa. He had also grown taller, but not by much, but his isn't a case of malnutrition just yet, so he did grow. He would proudly tell you that fact too: that he grew two whole inches.
The violet in the blue of his eyes has also gotten more prominent over the years. He had cut his ponytail as well over the years, opting for shorter hair out of convenience's sake. TAB TABW a r d r o b e ↴ TAB↪ the worse for wear Today, he dresses very simply so as to not stand out: Shinratsu wears a plain black shirt and white hooded jacket, with light-brown shorts. He wears the standard shinobi fingerless gloves and sandals. Notably, he had refused to swap his Iwagakure hitai-ate for a Konohagakure one, and still wears his original hitai-ate. His two katanas are holstered to his back in an "X" formation. 〈 hi'ate 〉 → He restitched the plate to a new piece of fabric since the old one became quite worn. They are small, sharpened, hand-held blades made from a variety of everyday items, such as needles, nails, and knives, as well as coins, washers and other flat plates of metal. They were not designed to kill but rather to distract, harass, scare and deliver poison. This is the weapon that gave ninjas the reputation for being able to attack with "a wave of their hand". They were actually throwing shuriken, but as the shuriken cut through the skin and disappeared into the distance it was as if a cut had appeared by magic. Damage 2 - 4 + Dexterity mod. For Shinratsu, once he swears his loyalty to someone, he feels he can never go back on his word, and this is why until even today, he continues the original plan he had made with his teammates to find a way to restore Taida Marcus to power in Iwagakure even if they become separated in their travels. Perhaps his extreme loyalty was also partly due to the problems his clan had in Kirigakure: after all, the Fubuki for the sake of loyalty was willing to gamble their very lives.
▪ Sociopathic Over the years, he has become reserved to the degree of becoming sociopathic. This probably could not be helped, considering during the years he was on the run with his teammates until they were finally separated, Kiri Hunters were following quite closely on Shinratsu's trial. As a consequence, Shinratsu is unable to fully trust anyone today now that the only people he trusts are no longer with him.
▪ Paranoid Due to the fact that Kiri is trying to retrieve him (though why, Shinratsu cannot fathom, as he never even officially became a Genin in Kiri), Shinratsu had grown intolerably paranoid. That partly goes into his sociopathic tendencies, it isn't just that he hates people, other people also can't tolerate his presence as Shinratsu will literally overanalyze and oversuspect anything and everything and in essence drive them completely mad.
▪ Sarcastic He had gained a foul mouth over the years: the manners and nobility his clan had taught him completely went down the drain. Considering his rather eclectic latest history, it wasn't much of a surprise, as after he was separated from his teammates he went through his own trials and had to learn how to use every tool at his disposal to survive. It wasn't that he wanted to do things he had been taught against in his early youth, it was that he didn't have a choice: he learned to steal food and money, he learned to lie fluently, and worst of all, he began to learn of the corruption of adulthood: how to take the fair features he inherited and to use that to his advantage.
▪ Pessimistic The world is nothing but a dark icebox. It is cruel and unfair, and if you even manage to find the slightest bit of happiness, beware, for it will one day be taken away from you. That is Shinratsu's personal opinion of the world and it is impossible to convince him otherwise. If someone attempts to try to teach him the meaning of optimism, they would get berated by him quite badly.
Lately, Shinratsu had also grown to be quite cynical when viewing history, and loves pointing out the flaws in mankind and how they never learn from their mistakes. Ironically enough, even though he and Uchiha Akeru do not see eye-to-eye (due to issues during Shinratsu's settlement period in Konoha), the two would not admit they share this common worldview.
▪ Hot-blooded Albeit ironical, considering his blood is actually quite cold. But never mind that, enduring ordeals did not turn Shinratsu into the carefully planning, carefully thinking quiet types his clan idealizes. He became quite the opposite in fact, and is quite easy to antagonize, even though he might move when he will deal with you to a later time if the time and place is not right for immediate resolution of a problem.

Imitation Theme: The Sacred Blacksmith - IE
Those peaceful days from long ago... I long for them now. So foolish I had been, not realizing how much they meant to me, only learning to regret when they are gone. I came to the Stone a stranger, I did not mean to become attached, but you, despite the opinions of the other villagers, treated me like one of your own. Even now, I can smile, remembering those first days... Those fights with Cronos, and all those complaints, especially at the rough way you handled us as punishment. But that was your way of showing you cared, wasn't it? As I met more people, slowly I came to realize, it wasn't just you. Even that strange Genin called Roy. And of course, there was Shizuka-chan, and despite it all, even Cronos-kun.
Before long, Iwa indeed became home. Sometimes I wondered, if I was betraying the village where I was born, by growing attached to another. But if this feeling seems so right, how could it be wrong?
Now many a long day has passed. The road ahead is rough, winding and harsh, but what is there to fear? There is nothing more to lose after all - not after our idyllic garden has been overrun. That is not to say your students have become tragic, that we have become lost... Merely we have only grown strong in the way you have taught us. But even saying that much wouldn't be completely true, isn't that right, Sensei? One day, I will see them again, my teammates whom became like family. And one day, we will find you again, most certainly without fail.
Sensei, you who are still out there in the world, somewhere... Did you leave...because you blamed us...? We failed you. You have every reason to hate us. But even if you hate us, we wanted to see you again.
Do you think of us as often as we think of you? The Team is scattered now, but even now I believe that Shizuka and Raisuke still misses you deeply as well. Another time, you might have laughed at the situation we find ourselves in today... Renegades of Iwa! How disappointed you would be. Perhaps you would have even called us your baka deishis, for even thinking of doing such a "stupid thing". But ah, we grew up. We didn't just dare to think anymore, we accomplished.
It's almost hard to think sometimes when the memories from which today springs from seems only yesterday... But you have taught me this before, Nankurunaisa: walk on, live on. Today I am a foreigner again, once more in a foreign place, but this time, I am not without direction, I am not without purpose and the next time your team meets you again, not a single pair of hand belonging to the three of us will willingly let you go.
Falsetto Theme: Omoi Gakenai Kotoba "The others in Iwa have prepared for by far longer. He would not want to see any of you injured." -Gogandantes Keiko "I don't understand." Came his grumbled complaint.
They were charged by their Sensei to aid his wife with the chores of the house. He and Raisuke were helping out Keiko in the kitchens while Shizuka's happy laughter came from the other room where she was playing with Mayuri. Of course, he wasn't complaining about assisting Keiko with physical labor, firstly he owed Gilgamesh and Keiko greatly for taking him in ever since he angered the matron of the orphanage enough to chase him out, and besides that, Shizuka had the harder task to keep the little demon occupied (the totling had taken quite a liking to pulling his hair).
Nor was he complaining about the chores. The tasks they had been given being quite simple, not to mention, if they gave Keiko a hard time, there would be her husband's wrath to face later. He wouldn't dare think of such a thing anyways, Keiko-sensei was always sweet to him, even during the Academy days when she first introduced herself as their Ninjutsu instructor and her brute of a husband as their Taijutsu instructor.
No, his concern was of a totally different matter. It was the commencement of the third stage of the Chuunin Exams in Iwagakure, and Giglamesh was gone for the meantime to help the Tsuchikage proctor the event. In more ways than one the news brought some measure of relief, not only did this give the team breathing room from their sensei's slavedriving ways (Shinratsu was sure no other team went on two missions a day or received as many grunt assignments) but also Giglamesh's presence would probably be well-appreciated by the other exasperated Iwagakurian shinobi in keeping their rather off-his-rocker Tsuchikage and his equally crazy Hokage friend in check.
A week ago, all of Iwa was in quite a riot, something about the mysterious chunks gouged out of the nearby once-scenic mountain. Apparently, the Council did find out where the pieces of land were invested and although it went to the preparation of the stadium for the elimination matches, that didn't mean they were very ecstatic about the fact. He heard that the two Kages promised profusely upon discovery that the mountain will be properly restored at a later time. However, the faces of the Iwa Council spoke volumes of how they did not believe that promise.
But never mind the feelings of wizened old politicians. For Shinratsu, his concern was of a totally different matter. Regarding the event of the Chuunin Exams, their team was quite eligible to apply for competing. They had been together for almost half a year when the event was first announced to be hosted by Iwa. But their Sensei for whatever reasons of his own duly declined the Kage when a messenger from that Taida Marcus approached their team.
"Shin-kun, he has his reasons, you know..." Came Keiko's quiet voice, soothing as usual. "The others in Iwa have prepared for by far longer. He would not want to see any of you injured."
"Like he doesn't do enough of that himself." He huffed, a fine brow raising slightly at the answer he had received. He dropped the diced carrots his hands had been cupping into the stew. With a boiling gurgle, they slowly disappeared from sight, sinking into the soup.
"Being a Genin is...so dull. All we do is help Takamura-obaa-chan clean her cats daily, last week we painted the Tao couple's new garden fence...there's that bulldog owned by Roy-san's mother whom we walked last month...evil thing almost bit off my hand... But what are we going to do next? Help the miners extract ore? Or smelt a bar or two for the smith in the local refinery? How is this exactly being a shinobi?"
Yes, he understood the only B-ranked mission the team attended did not go the way Sensei expected. That was his fault... But he had apologized for stepping out of line, hadn't he?
"Shin-kun..." Sighed Keiko as she stirred the soup delicately and uplifting the ladle, tasted the soup before proceeding to fill several bowls. "That isn't the purpose of those D-ranked missions."
"What is the purpose then?" Inquired Shin, his brows nearly disappearing into his hair as he hovered over the bowls and slightly blew on them. The room seemed to grow colder noticeably as he chilled lunch.
Keiko spun around, her hands on her hips and her lips pursed.
"Shinobi live to serve their village. Shin-kun, but how are we supposed to protect our home if we don't even know what it means to be selfless for others?"
His mouth curved into a frown at that. He hadn't thought of it like that.
There was no reply that he could make.
That was the last of that conversation.
Giglamesh-sensei would continue to work his team hard, and when Lord Juuyondaime finally handed out medals to the newly-named Chuunin, Shinratsu was there in the stadium with his teammates, politely clapping while everyone else from so many villages roared with deafening cheers.
If only he knew how quickly that peace would disappear...
When he first saw the messengers interrupting the Promotion Ceremony, clearly in haste to reach several of the Kages, he didn't think much of their agitation. But news traveled quickly. As Kages left early for their native lands with their respective embassies, rumors erupted everywhere. He didn't catch quite the details of the situation, only whispered rumors of a damiyo and Hi no Kuni. He had assumed it was merely a small political matter that those nations probably had with the Fire Nation nobility.
But Konoha departed with such haste, with other villages swiftly following at their feet. The celebrations were originally scheduled to last three days, but by the final day, only Kiri remained.
And then, the last of the foreign embassies departed too.
In the time that followed, Shinratsu bought newspapers with small change he earned from missions, intending to keep on top of news. The world was facing a terrible situation: apparently a new Fire Damiyo ascended to the throne of Hi no Kuni and he was conquering the minor shinobi villages and destroying the rural areas belonging to civilians. Distaste rose on Shinratsu's tongue: how disgraceful, to perpetuate war so, that stupid noble.
A week passed since then.
Soon enough, Shinratsu would find that he could no longer poke fun at the stupid decisions of political leaders.
Wall the Heart Theme: Lord of the Rings - Elven Themes "Shin-kun...? Shin-kun! I know you are in there! Open that door this instant! Just because Giglamesh is on a mission doesn't mean you can-...! Just when were you planning to eat with us...? Shin-kun...!" -Keiko Gogandantes He could've pretended to be asleep.
But he couldn't fool her, naturally. Even in his inexperience he could surmise as much, that his chakra was far too chaotically unstable for someone pretending to be asleep. And considering Keiko-san also happened to be one of the former Sensors of this village...that made it downright impossible that she would fall for this.
And so he sat there on the ground on the other side, covering his ears with his hands and drowning out the sound of her voice even as he kept the door shut with his body's weight. A single tune came to mind: an old song his mother used to sing to him, and he clung to it like driftwood now. But it lost the power to calm him long ago: the off-tune song from his memory only made the throbbing pounding of his heart hurt even more. The lullaby may offer no solace, but when the sound of her footsteps faded away into the distance, so did the song from his lips fade into a sigh of relief.
Some days, he could almost hate her.
But it wasn't her fault that he was feeling this way. Keiko-san had always been quite kind to him. While Giglamesh-sensei preferred the tough kind of love, his wife on the other hand... She had been like the mother he had lost. Maybe that was why it was becoming more and more difficult for him to be around her. The more he grew to feel he could love her... The more he grew to feel that possibly, he could come to love this...adoptive family... But the more he felt his heart becoming capable of love again, the more he also found himself waking in the evenings in a cold sweat.
Some evenings, the feelings worsen, and he grows all the more afraid that he was somehow dreaming even in his waking hours, and that at any moment he would rouse from this happy dream to a bitterly frightful reality.
How pathetically hypocritical of him. Even though he was sure his eyes had been shining with wonder when Giglamesh-sensei first proposed the living arrangements to him. This wasn't to say that for a time, he was very happy. He couldn't have received anything more: a good teacher, good teammates, a good place to stay, and slow but sure acceptance in Iwa despite his foreign origins. But here he was now, being a coward, getting cold feet... His eyes squeezed shut again. Just why did the world had to go into chaos again?
Just why couldn't Iwa be as Iwa always had been and not let stupid world problems bother them? There hadn't been a day of peace since the conclusion of the Chuunin Exams... Not just that, the whispered talks about Lord Juuyondaime also makes his blood run even colder than it already did.
What the hell was going on?
What was going to happen?
It grew more difficult to pretend all was well. Even playing with Mayuri did not help ease his worries, and her forceful tugs on his hair became unnoticed more and more to the absent-minded teen. The time he spends together with his teammates to train was the worst: he could see that Shizuka and Raisuke would also rather it be the early days, when their team was constantly running missions, rather than this recent horrible stasis the village had recently entered. At the least, it was also conveniently reassuring for him that Giglamesh-sensei was being requested for more solo missions. He wouldn't know what to do if he was forced to play house day to day without end and around Sensei, he could not escape honesty.
Each day simply became too exhausting.
Cronos would laugh at the mess he was in, wouldn't he?
How lucky the Aurum boy was... The other never captured someone else's concern and did not know still what bliss that was. He saw how Cronos looked on with jealousy when he and Shizuka was taken up by Giglamesh-sensei for the squad, while the other was not. Cronos had hoped that the three of them, upon graduation, would be working together. Instead, that day before him and Shizuka, Giglamesh-sensei had brought another boy, some nameless fellow Shinratsu had never met before in Iwa until then. But later when Cronos would later accuse Shinratsu of having replaced his rival, the Fubuki had grimaced. Isagawa Raisuke may be an interesting fellow, but the other boy also had an air about him that said there were secrets Raisuke could not permit other people to know.
A boy who was the same as him.
Shinratsu understands better today, that Giglamesh had not chosen either him or Raisuke out of earnest evaluation: Giglamesh-sensei saw pain in both of them and wanted to help before that pain transformed irrevocably into bitterness. Why else would Keiko try to make him understand what it was like to be a foreigner to the village and to eventually love it so much? To try and make him understand Giglamesh-sensei? To have Raisuke listen to the same story also? Or even why else make him spend so much time with Raisuke? Her recountings of her husband's early days, and with such pride, was not just to humor the past. There were honest wisdom behind her words, wisdom she had hoped both boys would learn from.
He leaned his head back against the door.
"Don't let war come..." He whispers.
It wasn't in his nature to sit around distressed. But if there was any such deity for shinobi, and it had ears, this was all he wanted for it to grant.
He got up, and cautiously opened the door. He owed Keiko-san an apology, and at the very least, he should try talking to her even if he could not be completely honest.
Burning Skies Theme: Cygnus Garden In every corner of the village, the sounds of wailing pervaded: there was no escape from those mourning the lost ones. The sight alone was almost enough to make one wonder: was this a form of karmic justice upon the shinobi for robbing those people a second time of their way of life? What indeed was fair? What indeed was not...? That day... It was almost dusk, the sky a foreboding color of red. But what was there to be worried of? Iwa was an impregnable fortress, built on the heights of mountains, not even the great Earth Master, mighty as she was with her ancient knowledge and power, was able to conquer the village with stony defenses worthy of its name.
What could then a singular meager human noble do against Iwa?
Yet, Shinratsu had not failed to notice how over the past week the Taida whom ruled the village swiftly fortified the defenses. The entire village bustled with nervous noise, and despite constant assurances from the Council over the radio broadcasts, it was clear that worries plagued everyone.
He and his teammates were helping Keiko today as per usual, but Shizuka had left already for home. The Henka's mother would be waiting, and though in better health from the medicine the elder daughter Harumi brings, the elderly Henka would only be satisfied when both her daughters were home to share the dinner table. Today was also a rare day in that Raisuke could stay behind for a little longer than the usual.
He, with Raisuke, had left behind the gates of the village following Keiko-sensei to scour the canyons for herbs. Keiko had made a promise to the boys, to teach them how to properly prepare medicine, so that if there ever arises a situation where first-aid was necessary, they would be prepared.
Raisuke held on to the currently empty basket, while Keiko walked ahead with Mayuri in her arms. The child was too young to be left home all alone and Giglamesh was away again on yet another mission for the village. Shinratsu had picked one of the flowers from the autumn meadows, and teased the tot as he shifted it slightly out of her reach every time she lunged for it. The child's mismatched eyes narrowed slightly, clearly in displeasure, and promising Shinratsu pain the next time she got a hold of his hair. He smiled faintly, and met her glare with defiance. A quiet laugh from the child's mother disrupted the glaring contest Shinratsu held with the small girl.
She acts as if she is older and all-knowing. Thought Shin with an exasperated roll of his eyes as Mayuri with a huff looked the other way. The child was certainly more like Gilgamesh-sensei in terms of personality. With an almost shiver, Shinratsu wondered to himself what sort of demon Mayuri will be when she's older. No, scratch that, he found himself rather feeling sorry for whoever would have the misfortune to court the girl. With how overprotective Gilgamesh-sensei already was, that young man will first have to survive the full wrath of Iwa's Kenjutsu master even after he survived whatever trails the girl herself put him through.
When they arrived at their destination, Raisuke and Shinratsu worked quietly together. Over the months, the two had grown able to cooperate even without a single word exchanged. That was perfectly fine for the both of them, usually when the team conversed, Shizuka would be the one initiating and maintaining conversation.
Hours passed by swiftly, they only had to find the right herb among the others. Sometimes it was easy to mistake the herb for the common bush-grass it grew in. Occasionally, when he was unsure, he would show Raisuke the herb as well: a quiet nod from the other as confirmation would be enough. When the basket was finally full, both boys stood. Shinratsu held onto it this time, as Raisuke had carried it here.
"That's strange..." He wondered aloud. "Where's Keiko-sensei?"
Raisuke suggested that they wait. And so they waited, deciding it was best not to move out of place in case Keiko-sensei would return only to find them not there.
As time passed, and the sun slowly disappeared from sight over the horizon, the lengthening shadows aggravated Shinratsu's worries. He could see that Raisuke was growing unsettled too.
It was when they saw the distant light of fire and black smoke in the direction of the village that they realized something was terribly wrong.
. . .
He and Raisuke quickly decided to split up to search for Keiko-san. There was nothing they could do to aid those back at the village, it was either that the people of Iwa would be able to handle the intruders or not - that was something they would have to have faith in now. Finding Keiko and Mayuri came first. Though Keiko-san was of Chuunin standing, Mayuri was with her, and that alone rendered the outcome of struggle much more unfavorable for the young mother.
He stopped cold when he caught the sensation of several large chakra presences.
Since when?, he thought to himself fiercely. Neither he nor Raisuke had noticed them!
If that many enemies slipped by, that means they had to be shinobi, because only shinobi could conceal their signatures this well!
He stopped in his steps, and placed his palms against the ground. A field of ice spread, the ambient weather changing.
Keiko-san, Mayuri...
The color of his eyes paled as he hunted for their body heat signatures with his tundra field.
Please be safe.
. . .
It wasn't Keiko or her child he first came upon.
"So you were the one who made that field control Jutsu."
Shinratsu's gaze grew cold, as he looked in the direction of the voices. Four strange men clad in black robes, whom he had never seen before, were there. They wore no forehead protectors, so it was hard to identify which nation they were from as their physical features held no telling traits.
"How surprising, to see Iwa has claimed the Hyouton Creation bloodlimit."
"Hey you." Replied Shin calmly. "There was a mother and her child around this place."
"Hm... Hien, it appears he really is no more than a small child. So very rude."
"I'm asking the questions here, you b*****d."
"If you are so interested, why don't you make us tell you, boy?"
The air grew chilling, as Shinratsu's eyes filled with cold delight.
"Fine by me."
. . .
"How very weak."
He didn't wince as the heel of a boot crushed down hard on his left hand. He tasted blood on his tongue - did he bite it? But the pain was only a dulling ache compared to the rest of his body. His body temperature had dropped to chilling levels, his payment for managing to trap one of the enemy shinobi in the wire of his Ayame Tori and channeling Hyouton until it inflicted third-degree damages.
But his own body was numbing, and where frostbite hadn't begun to creep into his muscles, it ached with burning pain. He had been forced to fight unfavorably: just like his Sensei, these people were samurai!
"Any last words, kid?"
He spat on the ground in answer before his right hand came up, forming quickly several single-handed seals.
Tatsu, Ne, U, Tori!
He pressed the palm of his hand hard against the other man's leg. The intruder gave a wild yelp, as his body quickly froze.
The man released him as if having been burned.
He quickly rolled into a sitting position, still in a daze, but his eyes never left the enemies. Before the others swiftly approached, intending to help their comrade, he struck both of his palms on the ground.
He would remain in contact for many moments longer, maintaining sharply the frozen field. The man's friends, their chakra signatures changing to angry flares, drew close.
In the last moment, Shinratsu released a wave of freezing chakra into the field, and watch in satisfaction as they froze in their tracks. The ice over their body climbed from the feet up, freezing them whole.
He breathed a sigh of relief.
It only took moments to dispatch three of them - one by one, he cracked their heads and watched as the frozen lumps rolled onto the ground. But the fourth, only encased from neck-down, could still speak.
He stood before the last foreigner, exhausted and quite battered from the battle, but the taste of victory gave him strength to stand.
"You know..." He breathed out heavily even while smiling. "It was really stupid for you to get that close. I couldn't hit you -- much too fast -- so this was the next best thing."
"Doesn't matter..." Gasped out the one who was still alive, trying to keep his teeth from chattering due to the cold. "The woman and that brat's dead, so it's still your loss-..."
He did not allow the man to finish, burying his kunai in the other's throat.

Rank N/A Cp Cost 3 Cp per round kept activated Special - Add 3 Fortitude for every 10 ranks in Survival (Only for Enduring Temperature changes) - Add 5 Awareness (Only for Sensing those inside the Absolute Tundra. Rank E Cp Cost 4 Dice Rolls N/A Damage N/A Requirements Learned in the Academy. Special This attack is considered as having been used during your opponent's Turn. (It does not use up your attacks for your Turn). Can only be used if all of the opponent's attacks have missed. Allows user to go into hiding. If user wishes to flee, he gets an extra initial roll. To a normal person, it would seem as if the user has teleported. Rank D Cp Cost 15 per feet Dice Rolls 2 Damage N/A Requirements Dexterity 20, Chakra Control 10, Ninjutsu 8 Special When rolling initiation checks or racing, or anything that involves speed, add Chakra mod. to the dice roll. The clansmember will be able to sense intruders in their tundra field due to body heat and recognizing a foreign type of chakra in their purely ice chakra-based field. However, if this technique is kept on for too long, rebounding damage will be inflicted on the clansmember as well. It is possible to keep this technique on indefinitely. Rank D Attack Turns 3 Cp Cost 20 Cp + 2 per extended yard, 8 Cp per round Damage 20 - 25 + Chakra mod.
