You have entered the office of Professor Selene Apophis, PhD. Lib. Sci.

Please maintain a quiet decorum when in this office, as you would a library.

Notes from Professor Selene's previous classes will be available as handouts in the cubicles hanging from the doorway, for those who need it.

The office of the former librarian seems both cramped, and spacious. Two stories of books loom upward, but the square footage of the room is miniscule, and you barely have enough room to walk around. Books are scattered everywhere, and fill the shelves to burst.

The room is lit well enough for comfortable reading, without being too bright.

Selene's desk itself is covered in paper, craft materials, and all sorts of typical teacher supplies.

About Professor Selene

User ImageUser Image
Name: Miss Selene Apophis
Nicknames: n/a
Gender: Female
Age: late 20's

Faction/Race Monster/Egyptian Cobra
Natural Ability: Hypnotic Gaze - Staring into her eyes long enough can put you into a trance.

Personality: Selene has matured exponentially from her younger days, learned to handle pressure and anxiety, and even forced down that hissing stutter until it is almost non-existent. Now, Selene's found an outlet for her obsession for books, in teaching. She wants nothing more than to share the fountain of knowledge she's slowly built up over the years, with her students. All that time spent alone in her room while her peers socialized would finally pay off, in the currency of bright, shining faces ready to learn. That is how teaching works, isn't it?

Selene prefers quiet, over any kind of noisy activity. If her classroom begins to get rowdy, she won't raise her voice to get their attention - in fact, she may lower it down to a whisper, in an effort to force the class to silence themselves to hear her. If it does not work, she will quietly ask for silence, and very likely be completely ignored. Any sort of fight, or altercation, within the classroom, will be handled with the same kind of uselessness, and she will very likely lose control over her own classroom at least once every day.

Despite these setbacks, Selene is all smiles. She has a cheery personality, when she is not being attacked or put in a difficult situation. She tries to remain calm, but it's easy to break her, and any real anger thrown in her direction will end in tears and/or shaking.

Finally, Selene's greatest fault is that she still cannot manage to walk on two legs with ease. She remains in her natural, snake form as much as possible, but during class she retains her human form and a little bit of the old, clumsy Selene emerges once more. She will trip over the tiniest of bumps, her legs will often give out at awkward times, and she is all around clumsy - when someone offers to carry her places for her own safety, she is terribly embarrassed to impose, but usually agrees simply to save herself another trip to Cricket's Office.

Despite all of the anxiety, shyness, and clumsiness, Selene is still thrilled beyond compare to be teaching at Amityville, and expects great things from her students.

Class Description: Professor: The Categorization and Utilization of Fear: Basically a study into the details of what specific Fears a human makes, and how they can be structured and labeled for classification, and then later in later classes it will be about utilizing the different kinds of Fears that can be harvested.

FEAR: The Chill: Anti-veNOM - Her bite injects healing Fear into the target.
Professors: 10d4 on two targets
First Dice:
xxxxx 1: Miss
xxxxx 2-4: Success!
Amount Healed: Add remaining dice. You cannot go over your max HP. Nor can you give excess HP to another character.

Physical Description: Small, thin, a little jittery, and withdrawn
Eye Colour: Black, and slit relatively thin
Hair Colour/Style: Long, black, usually beaded in several strands.
Skin Colour: Dark, around this shade, with green scaly patches
Clothing Style/Colours: Very ancient egyptian, classic, form fitting, and of course jewelry etc. No giant headpieces, but maybe some kind of billowing hood to clothing-ly signify her cobra hood, sure.
Extra: She shouldn't have visible eyelids, since her eyes blink using the nictating membrane, which covers the eye from right to left when blinking.

RP Requests and Plotting

This post is for anyone who would like a GM NPC plot and desires Selene's expertise in something! If you're wondering if I'm busy or not, just take a look at the open slots. I really encourage and practically BEG you guys to reach out if you need her for a plot, or especially if you are new to the shop and just want an NPC to give you an IC run down of something. We're here for you guys! HELP US HELP YOU!

Professor Selene Apophis
Gender: Female
Age: late 20's
Faction/Race Monster/Egyptian Cobra
Teaches: Classification and Utilization of Fear

Best plot uses: Selene is a member of DETH, she is also one of the students from the past event that occurred during the Defenders meta, that several students were able to witness through the eyes of Medea's trance. So she has insight into that event. She is VERY FOCUSED on learning to collect Fear as humanly as possible! She's also a trained and well-experienced librarian. And I'll be honest, I love playing her. She's not as good with things like tours, because she can't walk very well. But she's happy to drone on about things in her office, or if you have a plot that could use any of her assistance, just PM me and let me know!

Class Notes for Class 1

Quote:
"Glumgut's Theory categorizes Fear into three main .. categories." She cleared her throat after pausing, when she realized just how repetitive she was being. "Ahh, so there is Tangible, Actional, and Abstract. Tangible is the Fear of things you can see, taste, and touch - and these Fears are usually in the form of nouns. Subsequently, Actional Fears can usually be found in the form of verbs - Fear of falling. Fear of dying. Fear of drowning. Actional Fears are the fear of something happening. But if you look carefully, you'll notice a bit of overlap! We'll discuss that in a minute. Let's move on to our third category, Abstract Fear. This is the most murky and complicated of categories because it's just so hard to pin down! Glumgut himself almost dissipated of a brain aneurysm once when he tried having an intellectual discussion with Professor Slipthroat who refuted his theory entirely, stating-"

She bit her lip, silently chastised herself for diverting off the subject, and waved the thought away. "Sorry, sorry, not important. Onto the Abstract! According to Glumgut, Abstract Fears are the mightiest of human woes, because they cannot simply be overcome by growing up or facing it. They are the Fears that will grip a Human throughout his or her lifetime, and may never let go. And they are often Fears that we ourselves suffer through as well. Fear of Change. Fear of Love. Fear of a deity. Fear of no afterlife. These are Fears that humankind inflicts upon themselves - you will not often see one of us creating an Abstract Fear. It is very complex, and very dangerous. And that is why our Trick or Treaters tend to focus on using the other Fears when dealing with humans. It's just cleaner that way. No mess!"

Quote:
"Using these fears in combination will offer a wide variety of desirable, or undesirable results, and knowing which to use when may even save your life one day! There is nothing more dangerous than a human that fails to be properly frightened by your methods. You never want to encounter one that fights back, they can be such a hassle!" She, being a DETH associate, would never condone or even discuss the methods of dealing with such humans that the Boogey's might be using. That was why it was better to teach positively, and keep anyone from being in that position in the first place. Knowledge was power, always.

"Combinational fears are an advanced lesson, I assure you we will get to it in time, if you continue to come to my classes. What fun that will be! But for now, let us return to the basics."

She waited for more suggestions, but instead of returning to the basics like she'd hoped, it seemed Bella had other plans. Distracting plans. Selene giggled at the question. "Oh, it was quite a terrible fight indeed. Slipthroats theories on phobia distinctions were directly overlapping of Glumgut's already established categorizations, you see. He was out to prove that Glumgut was nothing more than a sham, making up silly names for silly things that had no meaning. Of course, he just came up with his own names for the same thing, so really, what does that make him!" And Selene let out the first natural sounding laugh she'd ever made since her entrance into the classroom. "Slipthroat's theory has three categories as well. Social phobias, specific phobias, and agoraphobia. Well, when he got to the agoraphobia, Glumgut was all but laughing at how ridiculous giving that fear it's own category. Why should the fear of leaving home have it's own category, he asked! There was much name calling, and in the end the two scientists simply started fighting physically. You see, Glumgut was a small, thin man. He stood no match against Slipthroat, who at the time of this discussion weighed an astonishing four hundred pounds! Most of that was blood, but still!"

She pulled out the new sheet, which already had a drawing on it. In fact, there were two artists at work here..

"So here we have a typical scenario for a scare victim, who is asleep, and dreaming." The professor had yet to look at the actual slide yet. She looked at the class as she spoke. "He is dreaming, something pleasant perhaps, and-"

She noticed.

"And." Her voice wavered.

"... And," She sucked it up and continued. "Our job is of course to feed on their Fear, which means they have to be scared of something. Now, let us suppose our research has indicated this human has a fear of death. How would they best be scared then? There's three likely options, and choosing which of the three is why it's important to know your Fears. Let us suppose you choose Kettil's method, which is to prey on the fear of the dead. A zombie, perhaps."

She drew a little zombie coming towards the bed.

"This could work. The human may fear zombies, but they also may not. Simply being scared of death does not necessarily mean they are susceptible to all three categories of Death, and it's your job to figure out which is the safest, most reliable scare tactic for this human. Say, perhaps, he or she likes zombies." Selene giggled quietly. "Believe it or not, some humans are beginning to have an odd affection for gore and death. You have to be careful you don't find one of those! But even more dangerous is the human who has watched far too many of the most recent phenomenon - zombie dispatch instructional videos. Yes, these exist! And a human that has watched too many of these is desensitized to the dead and rotting. They will try to attack you! This is to be avoided, of course.."

She used her fist to erase the zombie.

"So you must use your knowledge of alternate categories of death to scare this human. Perhaps rely on the abstract fear of death instead. Illusion is a widely used scare tactic, and reliably safer than actual contact with a human. Create the illusion of being in a coffin. Buried alive. And so on. Creativity is key to success!"

As she spoke, she'd drawn a box around the human, and now that she was done, she carefully erased it.

"So in summary, the importance of knowing your Fear categories can help you to maximize your Fear potential. One of my favorite examples is the Fear of Darkness. It's so versatile! Consider this, if you will. Some humans are scared of the dark because they believe something bad will happen to them in the darkness that they are safe from, in the light. Actional Fear! And some people are afraid of darkness for an entirely different reason - the darkness itself may feel crushing, a tangible presence that envelops them and constricts them, much like an enclosed space. This is a tangible Fear! And lastly, the Fear of Darkness can be as simple as emotional reaction. Darkness may bring them loneliness. Unhappiness. Some form of mental distress. This is Abstract Fear! It is your job to know which category to work from - or, if you're unsure, then how best to use all three to assure maximum Fear potential with the least amount of risk!"

Class Notes on Holiday Doors

Nio Love
"Welcome, welcome, new and old! My name is Professor Selene, and some of you have already been to my previous classes so you are aware of how to conduct yourselves while here. There are many new faces as well, and for those of you who have not met me before, let me be clear - my class is in lecture format, with an activity after I've filled your heads with delicious knowledge! So pull out your pens and paper, as you will have homework based off of this lecture and your experience today! Tut tut!"

She did not wait for the students who hadn't prepared, to find - borrow - steal their supplies. She immediately started in on the lecture, waddling shakily behind her desk to the chalkboard on the wall. "Today we will be learning about the seven gateway doors that are hidden in the Weeping Forest, also known as the Holiday Doors!"

It was even harder to hear her when she had her back turned. Students in the back probably couldn't hear her at all.

"We will be discussing six out of the seven, because I think you are all well aware of Halloween, our home, pride and joy!" She giggled into her hand, as if she'd made the funniest joke, and continued.

"So let us begin! Let's see, we have.."

Selene was very, very short.

She also took far too long drawing out little symbols for all of the holidays, and the class had started to chatter behind her in the process.

"And those are the - students, tut tut, you're in a classroom, no more talking please! These are the seven Holiday Doors. They lead to all of the worlds that connect us, all of the worlds that humans have created through their emotions. And did you know, in each of these doors are separate worlds, and they all have doors to us as well! Lucky us, these doors are hardly ever used, and we keep to our own holidays, don't we?" She chuckled into her hand, amused at the idea of visiting the other worlds so freely; Selene had not been employed at Amityville during the Train field trips.

"Now, everyone please take notes, I will give you just a bit of info on all of the Holiday worlds!"

Valentine's Day

"We will travel through the doors in a linear fashion based on date. If we consider the first of Frost October to be the first day of the year, then the first Holiday that humans celebrate in their calendar year is Valentine's Day! Many of you are very familiar with the concept of this world, because we have adapted our own special version of the holiday to celebrate - Scarentine's Day! It falls on the same day as that of the humans, which is the 14th of Short October! And what a lovely day it is, mm? A celebration of love, and the color red! And hearts! Living, beating hearts!"

Selene's information on the subject was based off of her own research on humanity, and thousands of well published documents by other famous Halloween writers. This, of course, meant most of the information was wrong.

"I believe Franklin Stein wrote on his first exposure to the celebration of Valentine's Day in the human world, if I can remember correctly - to quote - " She cleared her throat, and took on a gravely tone. "Franklin found himself under severe prejudice, since he had no working heart - the humans threatened him with pitchforks and red, red fire until he cease and desisted." She nodded thoroughly. "If you'd like to learn more, our library has several books on Mr. Stein's works and experiences with the humans, they are quite a delightful read!"

She moved to push one of the baskets forward. They were filled with red heart shaped candies. "The Holiday world of Valentine's Day was created based off of the emotion of love, and the world of Valentine's Day is remarkably pleasant! There, you'll find many a small flying gnome - they call them cupids there! And these cupids seek to shoot you with harmless arrows that cause you to feel quite emotionally attached to anyone around you. This is also a world filled with many kinds of chocolate, and red, so much red! But alas, not a lot of blood - not even the arrows pierce through. A bit of a disappointment, wouldn't you say?"

St. Patrick's Day

"The next Holiday on the human calendar is St. Patrick's Day. This holiday takes place during Storm October, is known for over-use of the color green! This is of course because of a human's obsession with luck, particularly when it comes in the form of four leaf clovers. They're very difficult to find, you know, but oh, how they try!"

Selene pushed a basket forward, filled with colorful little marshmallows. "In the Holiday world of St. Patrick's Day, all sorts of lucky charms can be found littering every corner and haven. The denizens of this world are also small gnomes known there as leprachaun, I'll spell that for you - l e p r a c h a u n, that is quite the mouthful! These little darlings are all dressed in green, and they strive to collect and hoard gold en masse. If you catch one, he will probably assume you are there to steal his gold, and attack. How vicious!"

Selene giggled, clearly not serious about the vicious part.

Easter

"Now, today is actually the day that coincides with the holiday of Easter! This is one of my favorite holidays, because humans use it to celebrate new hope. What an enchanting idea, is it not? Easter is the day when everyone can start anew, given a fresh chance at life. Ah, humans have such brilliant little ideas!" She seemed to speak of humans fondly, as one would speak of a pet.

"The denizens of Easter Town are main of the bunny or chick variety, though there are a few eggs with legs hopping about, ha ha!" Both of her hands covered her mouth to hide her giggles this time. "Eggs in general are a focal point of the holiday, since they too are a sign of new life! But in general, this holiday also seems obsessed with chocolate. You'll see on your desks the little treats I left you, shaped like bunnies! A typical Easter treat."

She pushed another basket forward, filled with colorfully wrapped eggs. "These candies here are very famous around Easter, because they're filled with creme that looks like an egg. I promise you, they are not an egg! But they are quite delicious."

Independence Day

"Next we have Independence Day. This is a day that celebrates freedom! Freedom from what, you may ask? Well, as you know, humans are greatly oppressed due to the fact that they are our main food source. But we have fought hard to make sure their rights as a species remain protected, and they are not harmed when we scare them for Fear! This is a wonderful thing to celebrate, and although it's not documented, I would truly like to believe the humans are thanking us for being so thoughtful!"

This, of course, was not even close to the truth.

"On this day, great big noisy firecrackers are sent up into the night sky to shower the world with color and light. Red and Blue are very popular colors for celebrating this day! And in Independence Town, those colors are represented in stars almost everywhere you look. Denizens of this town are fierce, proud people who seem to love noise and explosions! Isn't that exciting?"

She pushed the basket of thin packets forward. "This particular candy may be new to you. They are called Pop Rocks, and they are small little kernels of candy that crackle delightfully in your mouth. They are a popular representation of the sound and excitement this day celebrates!"

Thanksgiving

"We're reaching the end of the calendar year, and on the month of Waning October we find a celebration known as Thanksgiving! The key to this Holiday is in the name - it is a day to give thanks! Think hard, for a moment. I am sure all of you have much to give thanks for, in your life. Why, just existing is a blessing you owe to humans, in and of itself! Truly, there is much to give thanks for."

She pushed the basket, filled to overflowing with big, fat, round turkeys. "The denizens of Thanksgiving Town are called Pilgrims. They are very quaint and traditional folk, who seem to enjoy wearing black clothing and funny little hats. They also seem to enjoy turkey very much, which is a shame, because - well, you can imagine the turkeys don't really enjoy it, mmm? Speaking of turkeys, I made these chocolate turkeys for you all myself! Don't they look darling?"

Selene seemed hesitant to talk too much on the antics of the pilgrims in Thanksgiving town, and her home-made turkeys were a perfect distraction.

Christmas

"And now we come to the last door, one which you are all quite familiar with as well. Christmas Town has a lot of history with Halloween Town, and anyone who knows the story of our great, dear Jack Skellington - " She put her hand to her chest and stared up at the ceiling. "May he rest in pieces - " Her hand fell, and she continued as normal. " - knows much of Christmas Town already! In the human world, Christmas is a true celebration of joy. The leader of Christmas Town, Sandy Claws, happens to travel the entire human world in one day just to give them all presents that they ask for. How does he do it? Why, magic of course! How else does anyone do anything, really!"

She pushed the basket filled with candy canes forward. "We have our own celebration, on the day of Christmas, as you all know. And Sandy Claws' magic has allowed us to have that one day of snow as an eternal present to us all - to be able to celebrate just as the humans do. Truly not as awful as some people would like to say, that Sandy Claws!" Quieter, she murmured something about not having ever met the man herself but -

"Green and red are the standard colors for those who live in Christmas Town, which include Sandy Claws himself, his wife, and a veritably unending horde of little gnomes known as 'elves'! They are very hard workers, spending an entire year creating the gifts that Sandy Claws hands out on that one, remarkable day."
