Mount Vesuvius

A relatively short distance to the South of Rome lies the now extremely active volcano, Mount Vesuvius. The land surrounding used to be fertile but for hundreds of years now the volcano has constantly been erupting and spewing foul gasses into the air. One would think perhaps this was the intervention of another or a result of the war that had almost entirely consumed humanity and the terrible weapons used in it. Whatever the case though this is sure to be an upward battle to ascend the mountain as a heavy spiritual pressure lies at the top preventing flight.

[Mission Data: Air Walking is forbidden during this thread unless I remove the restriction.

Until the official starting date of the mission you may post but it will not direct you towards any goals even if you walk up the mountain.

It's really hot. Keep that in mind when RPing.]

[Mission Commence: We'll be making progress from here onwards.]

((Edit: I've added an aerial photo of Mount Vesuvius. Given it's a real volcano and all))

A humongous pulse of burning reiatsu emits from the top of the mountain. Could it be some strong spiritual creature has mixed itself with the fires of the volcano? Volcanoes have for a long time been places of spiritual significance too and so it is possible that a creature of immense power exists atop. The fact of the matter though is that the signal indicates a Shinigami origin and a Shinigami origin is more likely to be good news than bad news. More likely. Not certain. Shinigami betrayals aren't exactly unheard of these days.

However, from the backs of the Shinigami who should be preparing to rush up the mountain an extremely fast hollow spiritual pressure is racing towards them. Mixed in is the slight scent of a Shinigami. An enemy is coming and although they probably won't arrive before the Shinigami have made good progress up the mountain they should still be wary. The humongous spiritual pressure emitting from the mountain is certain to have brought other enemies in for a fight.

This is the kind of situation where the Shinigami are sure to get attacked from both sides. They'll have to keep a watch for enemies climbing the mountain alongside them.

Bob

Are you watching closely?...

Bob sighed rubbing the back of his neck as he arrived as the base of the mountain, "This seems rather tedious, but I suppose if this is what I'm assigned to do then I shall get going" He loosened his shinigami robes allowing the top half to fall off so that he could properly air out and keep from overheating while ascending this mountain. His gaze shifted to the top of the mountain, "There is definitely something up there, I'm glad I only brought the essentials. I was sure to hydrate before hand so I shouldn't need anything until the mission ends. Still I should be sure to pace myself while climbing this so that if anything happens to pop up I won't pass out from heat exhaustion" His mind mulling over the best course of action as he wiped the sweat from his brow that was already beginning to permeate through his skin.

"Names Bob, squad 11. I'm heading on up now, you may wait for the others. I'll be sure to pace myself so you guys should be able to catch up pretty easy." He spoke to Kusari in a calm tone with a slight hint of excitement. Bob was a very social person but the only thing that could override this desire to interact with others would be his desire to fight and test himself. He tilted his neck to either side allowing a symphony or cracks and pops to emanate outward from his upper vertebrae. He took in a deep breathe holding it for a few seconds before exhaling allowing his heart rate to slow so that he could hopefully do a better job at remaining cool.

He took his first steps up the mountain, noticing that since the gradient at the bottom of the mountain wasn't very sharp he was able to begin walking up with ease. He was going at a nice pace allowing the rocks on the mountain to stabilize him so that he wasn't wasting careless energy trying to keep his footing in loose gravel. After about twenty minutes of walking he had made it to a more hardened part of the mountain making it so that he could continue his ascent with less caution of where he stepped. Bob was determined to reach this mountain and complete this mission. He knew that his comrades would catch up with relative ease. He also knew it would be prudent for a scout and be easier for him to come down to them if he encountered an enemy he couldn't handle on his own.

(Sorry... wasn't sure of the mountain layout so it made the ascent rather vague since I wasn't sure what to assume...)

Shirokuma arrived a bit later than he expected, but he arrived none the less. He stopped at the bottom of the volcano and looked up to gaze at the entire volcano. He could feel a small pulse of reiatsu and it seemed to be coming from the top of the volcano which made him wonder why anyone would come here of all places. He looked over and noticed someone had already arrived before him. He nodded to them before he began his own climb up the volcano.

Every step he took Shiro could hear the rocks, pebbles, and anything else he stepped on crack and shift under his weight. He expected this climb to be harder, but the terrain wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. He advanced up the volcano more and more until he came across yet another Shinigami. He tilted his head wondering when he arrived and started his climb, but he shook it off as he felt the terrain change. He had to take it a bit slower and be more careful. He thought if he didn't a chunk of the ground would slide of and send Shiro (and possibly Bob) back down the mountain.

Packing his backpack was the hardest part of the mission for Rat. Aside from the basic necessities for survival if he managed to get lost, he was torn between armoring up to prepare for anything that may come his way or stripping due to the heat he would face. He’d never encountered a volcano before but if they were as fickle and full of lava as he had heard from tales; well he didn’t want his armor melding into his skin. Rat decided to just chuck some basics in his backpack. They were climbing, and carrying explosives wouldn’t be good but what if he needed them? With that in mind, he threw in a huge wad of clay. His hatchet-shovel might come in handy at some point if they needed to fortify. Another item into his pack. Extra water would never hurt. Hydration. Bug spray might come in handy. If there were any bugs up there. Just in case though. Matches were also necessary. Rope, two separate 60 meter half-ropes for climbing. Then his bag was full. He looked forlornly at the other items, finally decided to grab a large wooden board-like shield and strapped it on his back under his heavy backpack and set out to meet the others.

It seemed that his packing dilemma ended up making Rat the latest arrival. He noticed two people had begun their trek upwards. The slope appeared consistent for now, at least. Were introductions in order? Nah, probably wasn’t that important anyways. This was just a search and find-out-what-was-going-on type of mission that involved climbing a volcano. He couldn’t picture himself bonding with someone climbing a volcano. Rat’s pack was large though, he would probably end up the slowest in the group. It didn’t bother him too much, if he needed to lighten the load he would get rid of a can of bug spray. Or perhaps not. Well, here he went. He’d just loosely follow behind this 7’3” tall, heavy-set bear of a man. At least it would assure him a stable path up the mountain. Following behind him made Rat feel like a child. As long as the man didn’t get heat stroke from his helmet and crash into him.

Kusari, who stood at the bottom of the mountain, was sure to be the first to hear the sound. Perhaps he would even already be able to hear the sounds of six great hooves charging towards their location. Yet still he might also be the first to fully see the huge cloud of debris being ripped into the air. The cloud shared its' location with the hollow reiatsu hurtling towards the Shinigami party. In terms of raw strength it should have been clear by now. Not one of them could go toe to toe with whatever hid behind the cloud of debris and hope to survive in a battle of purely physical might. Some of them might be able to resist but ultimately they would have to run.

Bob's attempt at pacing himself would really pay off now. He had already made some progress and the great cloud of dust was hurtling towards them at an impressive speed. It must've been moving at least around 100 km/h or 60mp/h and could easily outrun the Shinigami on flat ground. Though whether or not it would maintain that speed up a slope or when ascending a mountain was up for debate. In any case the Shinigami were faced with a dilemma. Should they try to run down and take on whatever engine of destruction lay hidden below or should they press on in the hopes of outrunning the beast to their goal? Ultimately it was likely the hollow would catch up with them eventually but they could buy each other time to reach the top if they ran now. This would be their last chance for rest and using their radios to communicate as well as making informed decisions. From here onwards it was either a race up the mountain or a battle with a hollow as well as more than likely whatever the inkling of Shinigami was that existed in the swirl of destruction fast approaching.

[Last chance to change Kido. Select the Kido you think best now.]

User ImageKusari looked at the kids eagerly rushing up the volcano. Bob, with his attitude and spiky hair seemed liked he would be the biggest headache here, The second kid seemed like he may be worth a crap in a fight, but outside of that, what good was he? The last guy seemed to have brought all of his worldly possessions with him. Kusari lit a cigarette and turned towards the mountain, ready to climb. Thats when he saw it. In the distance a cloud of dust rose, horses? He whistled to get the attention of the others, "Hey maggots, check your six!" He looked behind him and used his superior athletics ability to climb up a little bit. He pointed his hand at the approaching cloud, figuring out were he would be, he adjusted his focus and said, "Twenty seven by seven o two. Moon raises higher, tide crashing. Vision Obscured as the Great God takes his seat on the throne and cast out the impudent from his court! Hado number thirty-eight Yabu Retsu!" A black ball launched from his hand towards the filthy mass of hollow energy coming at him. It was destined to land in the creatures path and explode, when it did, twenty six explosions would crush the beast from every side.
"Get yer' arses up this mountain and focus fire on the hollow. If your worth your salt with kido, firing is authorized, melee fighters get up the mountain and scout ahead." He looked to see who would be staying. Then he ran up the mountain a little more. These punk kids acted like it was hard, short of the heat he did better workouts for his morning PT, but damn that heat, he was already building up a sweat from the heat alone.

Are you watching closely?...

Bob turned when the one at the bottom of the mountain yelled maggots. He couldn't help but laugh at what the Kusari had exclaimed finding the military lingo to be trivial and humorous in this setting. "You sure seem to think a lot of yourself my friend, though if you wish to assume command be my guest" He spoke while simultaneously attempting to analyze the enemy that was apparently charging towards them. "This guy is a piece of work, I like him!" He thought a smile on his face, not minding that Kusari had named himself the leader of this operation. He could bark out orders rather effectively so he supposed it would suffice for now.

"Aye aye sir!" Bob spoke with a salute playing along with the commanding officers orders. He decided that meant he could stop pacing himself and let loose and scale this mountain with a fair amount of ease. "Over green, over emerald, over fungi. Tell me mine location oh expedient one." Bob spoke before thrusting his right arm up above his head. A blue and green flare like flame erupted outward flying high into the sky before erupting and collapsing into itself and falling back down towards Kusari. "Eat that, you'll better be able to coordinate after you do" He said before releasing the weights on his forearms and ankles allowing them to simply fall to the ground. Each weight weighed approximately forty five pounds making Bob considerably lighter and stronger.

"I'm going on ahead, I'm one of those melee fighters you spoke of before" He spoke phlegmatically before turning around and leaping off up the mountain. After dropping the weights and slipping out of the top half of his robes Bob could scale this mountain effectively without sweating out too much weight to make him dehydrated by the time he reached the peak, or his next obstacle. "When he eats that he should get a really good idea of what could be at the top of this mountain. Hopefully he will be able to tell me what it is before I reach it" He began to ponder his options hoping he would come up with some sort of decent strategy before he reached whatever laid at the top of the mountain. Each step he took seemed to push an exceptional amount of force off of the ground allowing him to leap and bound in long graceful strides up this mountain. This strategy made it so that he could cover a pretty large distance with each stride allowing him to maximize distance while minimizing energy consumption.

Shirokuma was slowly making his way up the volcano when he heard someone shouting. He turned around to see two more shinigami behind him. One of them was the one yelling and another had what seemed everything ever made in a backpack. He shook his head and looked to where the other shinigami said to look. He tilted his head at the oncoming cloud that seemed to be set on running at them. He held out his finger and mumbled something before he shot off a Byakurai at the cloud. He then looked down at the shinigami with the giant backpack and sighed before he picked him up and began to run up the volcano. To him he felt like he weighed nothing. He pointed back telling Rat to do anything while he carried him.

He continued up the volcano and continued to carry Rat as he mumbled and whispered some things before a blue orb appeared in his hand. He would then quickly kneel down and push it into the ground before he began to run again. Whatever was chasing them it would have a hard time catching up. His boots thudded against the ground as he made each step count pushing him and Rat up farther and farther, but also to make sure they didn't fall or slip and tumble down to what ever was chasing them.

Rat didn’t know who that guy thought he was but a gut instinct told him they probably wouldn’t get along. Perhaps it was the attitude he had? Probably a Ninth Squadder. He thought derisively. His opinion of the Ninth Squad was abysmally low even before the evacuation. The ideals a good amount of them seemed to espouse just didn’t hold any water with Rat. Speaking of which, weren’t his other two mission members a bit familiar? He definitely had seen them somewhere before. Well, his general animosity towards the Ninth Squad nor the familiarity of the others wasn’t really important right now. What was important was an incoming cloud of dust thundering across the ground. And no matter, that man’s orders were as good as any. What did Rat even qualify as though? Sure he had a hammer to hit things with, but he wasn’t really a melee fighter per se and scouting would be difficult for him at best. He certainly could fire kido but judging by the size of the debris cloud, he wasn’t sure how effective any kido he’d fire would be.

Suddenly, Rat found himself inexplicably airborne for a moment as he bit back a startled yelp that turned into a brief, high-pitched whimper instead. Looking down, he noticed that the man in front of him had picked him up and faced him backwards. He didn’t even seem to be struggling. This guy must be an absolute monster. Rat thought. His large size wasn’t just for show then. Then the world started swaying and rocking as said man began running- running!- up the volcano at an impressive pace and consistent cadence. Rat understood the significance of his pointing too. He was glad he hadn’t brought any Shell Flares along, those likely would’ve erupted in his pack already from the motion, but he hadn’t packed any ready-made explosives and the clay would take time to make. The man carrying him, Shirokuma he believed, knelt down to place a kido Rat instantly recognized as Mutilator Mine before continuing up.

That gave him an idea. Mutilator Mine was excellent for taking out the legs of Shinigami, though it wasn’t as effective against the hierro of an Arrancar. If he could take down the legs of that thing, while it was large enough that it wouldn’t be able to react quickly to attacks on its flank, he hoped. He didn’t know what shape it was but the hoof-beats at least told him it had feet. “Bakudo #9: Horin!” Rat intoned as he cast an orange rope, with a yellow spiraling pattern, towards the ground near where the dust cloud was coming, hoping to lead the beast, a Hollow judging by its reiatsu, and snag its legs to trip it up and throw it off-balance.

The Kido cast by Bob would not just reveal a good path up the mountain but would also reveal the state of the mountain. It was something they may have been able to guess themselves from the approaching scent of smouldering flesh and the immense spiritual pressure emitting from the peak of the mountain. Upon looking at the Sanic Tracker Kido they would find all surrounding the mountain the corpses (or rather more likely burnt out shells) of hollows surrounding the mountains. Hidden by larger rocks. It was quite likely that whatever the force atop the mountain was it had slain the other hollows with a fiery power strong enough to cook the organs of the hollows and burn them from the inside out. To put it simply the Shinigami team had found themselves in-between a rock and a hard place. However in good news they had now found a more easy route to climb the mountain. If they were to go to their right they would find a move even route up the mountain that hadn't been as badly destroyed by constant eruptions.

Meanwhile a Kido onslaught was fast heading towards the huge Hollow reiatsu. With a definite sound of a hit an explosion went off in the path of the Hollow and for the first time the reiatsu of the creature could be felt to be slowing down and the dust cloud surrounding it was settling down. In a few seconds Kusari's, frankly understandable, mistake became clearly visible. A gargantuan beast stood before them. At least a hundred metres tall. Each hoofed foot was as wide as nine Shinigami. There was no question Kusari's Kido had hit its' target but its' effects were negligible when combined with the hugeness of the enemy he was facing. There was also the slight worry that the creature may boast a hierro but that power was mostly reserved for Arrancar. Which this was certainly not. The intelligence or surprising lack thereof could not be felt off this creature. A great bushy looking thing with dark brown fur all over and two enormous tusks and yet with no eyes and no clearly visible mouth. This must be one of the Hollow Warbeasts which rumours had started to circulate about. It was said they were a special breed of hollow purposefully created for their focus on physical power at all other costs and that it was completely impossible for a Shinigami to win a physical battle with one.

It was more than likely true. However it was an interesting challenge.

Another thing the Shinigami may have heard was that due to the sheer stupidity and actual non violent nature of these beastly Hollows they had to be commanded by some sentient creature sat atop. Although it was only a tiny black dot in the whole picture of things the Shinigami sat atop had an easily felt reiatsu central to the destructive force that the Hollow emitted. He could be no stronger than the Shinigami here or at least the difference was negligible. This meant if they could get atop the beast they would be able to stop the force directing it. There was now a clear path of attack for the Shinigami.

Meanwhile Rat had made the mistake of firing a binding Kido at a creature which was easily stronger than him. Possibly a creature strong enough to drag the mountain itself with it. With a yank from one of the creature's legs it pulled Rat out of the hands of the Shinigami holding him, or at least attempted to, with the kind of strength that could move even the strongest Shinigami alive. Rat would be better of dispelling his Bakudo if he didn't want to be thrown about like a sack of potatoes. Very small, very fragile potatoes.

This movement was actually the result of the Hollow Warbeast resuming its' charge up the mountain and now it was on a crash course for the one who had fired an offensive Kido at it. Kusari. With a body large enough to seemingly tear the mountain in two Kusari would have to move out the way or try and clamber on top of the Warbeast so that he might fight the Shinigami atop it. All in all the situation was not looking bright but at the very least a chance for victory, however slim, existed.

Bob

Are you watching closely?...

Bob sighed as the sheer size and strength of this thing finally became visible, what a pain this beast should be to take down. There is no possible way he could take this thing on brunt force, Bob was stronger but this thing much blow him out of the water. He watched as the kido fired seemed to merely aggravate the thing more and saw his teammate get snatched up by the thing because he casted a bakudo. There are two others who can help him, it's important we know what is at the top of the mountain. I hate leaving him, though I suppose I won't really be leaving him behind because they will stay to make sure he is safe" Bob continued to ponder trying not to break pace as he got the information from his sanic tracker which revealed an easier path up the mountain.

He made the decision reluctantly, knowing that his large comrade would definitely stay back to help and that the up tight person would most likely do that as well. Very well then he could scout ahead to see what lies at the top of the mountain. "My friend, Shiro was it? I'm continuing on ahead, we must reach the top to at least know what is up there, I trust you can handle this and save the smaller one" Bob spoke this kindly and rather softly to Shiro making sure to express the trust he had in the hulking man. Bob knew positive reinforcement was far more effective the negative so hopefully he would send the right message to Shiro.

Bob was fighting the urge to stay and fight but the grouchy gary at the bottom of the mountain had told him to reach the top and that's what he shall do. "By the crashing waves and the silence of the wind I command the deliverance of mine enemies unto me." Bob spoke while turning to the right on a rather wide arc so that he could remain at top speed and angle himself properly to be sling shot to the much better path on the mountain. A yellow strip appeared three meters in length on the ground before him, his head bent over and so did his back shifting his weight so that when he took off he wouldn't lose stability. His foot made contact with the strip as he rocketed at a speed much faster than his was previous capable. His long strides managed to keep him at this accelerated pace until his reached the path.

Bob saw the path after only about thirty second turning a bit tighter so that he would intentionally lose some of his speed and lower the amount of energy he was consuming. He now found himself continuing up the mountain with his long strides leading the way. "If I keep up this pace I should reach the top without dying from heat exhaustion, actually I should have around 60% of my energy left which I suppose all things considered is definitely a good thing. I have some water in my flask but I should wait and use that sparingly as it's my secret stash and as such should on be used in dire needs" He mused ideas also now knowing of the burnt husks which surrounded the mountain. Their burnt nature lead him to believe that this was something besides the sky scrapper that was attacking his comrades bellow. Bob felt rather terrible leaving his teammates but it was even more important to reach the summit so that he and his comrades wouldn't get caught in a pincer movement. He continued to stride up the mountain now making covering more ground easier now that he was on this stable and steady path. Bob should reach the summit in no time at the very least having superior positioning for attacking the monster at the top if there was no real threat up there. Although Bob suspected there certainly would be.

Kusari looked up at the approaching warbeast, and its rider. "You think I'm afraid of something just because its big?" He smiled as he began to run a little towards the right. He ate the kido Bob had left him and said, "In all things moderation. Shatter and Smash. The sun, the wind, the moon. A black rain descends. All frown upon the Earth. Bukudo Number twenty Ooze Gun. Hado number fourteen Dark Stone Shard Blaster." A gun coated his right hand, a black ball in his left. Mud and ash flocked to the ball as Kusari tossed it into the beast's path, simultaneously canceling it, leaving a great field of mud. Next he fired the entirety of the ooze gun's contents spread over the path of the beast. A large thing like that couldn't stop on a dime, it would crash. The final two shots hit the beast's feet, initializing the trip. "How much do you want to bet Warbeast don't have seatbelts." With any luck that driver up top would be tossed off from its mount, and once on the ground he would get a swift kick of justice. "BAAAAAWWWWWWWB," Kusari shouted, "HEAD RIGHT SOLDIER, THE PATH IS CLEAR AS DAY!" He hustled back more an more, clearing the beast's possible trajectories. Watching the skies for any signs of the driver.

((If Kusari sees this guy flying through the air I am going to use my custom Bakudo on him to disorient, increase damage.))

Rat would’ve liked to say this was all part of his grand scheme. He would’ve liked to say that he had noticed the reiatsu of a Shinigami sitting atop the unmistakably Hollow monster charging towards them. It would have been nice, oh so nice, to consider being brutally and suddenly ripped from the hands of his carrier the key to his attack strategy to take down this threat. Unfortunately, all Rat was thinking as he rocketed through the sky, rather jerkily due to the motion of the Hollow, was something along the lines of ”HOLY HORSE NUGGETS!”

The inertia from the initial pull threw him about halfway across the creature, giving Rat a better view of the topside, before the Horin snapped taut in his hand and pulled him back towards the front like a bungee cord. Not wanting to be pulled under and trampled to death, Rat decided now was a good time to let go of the Bakudo. Well that solved one problem, now he had to deal with accelerating towards the back of a gigantic war beast at speeds faster than man was made to go. As Rat swung his backpack off of his back and held it in front of him like a cushion, he decided he most definitely wouldn’t have time to cast kido with a chant.

”Bakudo #10: Speed Barrier! Hado #7: Buster Blast!” Rat shouted out as a barrier of wind formed in front of him that would slow down his fall. The other part rested upon timing; if he was off he would very well fracture or break his left hand upon impact. He felt a brush of bristly hair on his left palm and released the Buster Blast, creating another cushion to his fall alongside his backpack and the Speed Barrier. The hairy and living nature of the Hollow also meant the drop wasn’t as deadly as it would’ve been. Well, it was a rather haphazard way to reach the rider on the beast but he had done it. After all, this was all part of his grand scheme. His left hand admittedly felt sore but as Rat hefted his war hammer, he was confident he could at least distract the rider. Hopefully there wouldn’t be any sudden movements by the war beast that could knock him off. He could grab the hairs for support if that happened. For now, he took out a chunk of clay from his backpack and replaced it on his back.

”Explosions are nice, explosions are fun. Everything should explode under the sun. Hado #35: Shell Blast.” Rat began to chant under his breath as he began to single-handedly mold hollow clay balls out of the clay. Judging by the amount of clay he took out, he could make four, perhaps five if he consolidated the scraps, Shell Blasts. Since his location wasn’t all too stable, he’d stick with one Shell Blast at a time. No point in blowing himself up because he couldn’t hold all those clay balls.
