Flying Lessons
A RP Event

So this is the day... Professor Drake thought, looking up at the sunrise peaking out from behind the tall castle walls. Today was flight training for both second years and first years... Merlin's Beard, she hoped everything would turn out okay!

The Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs all arrived on time in a peaceful manner and Professor Drake couldn't help but smile at this. Ah, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw... if it weren't for most of their excessive clumsiness when it comes to sports, this would be a perfect lesson... "Good morning students!" She welcomed them, "Today you will be learning how to fly a broom--if any of you don't feel comfortable doing this, take it slow. Other than that, I would like to warn you all that I won't tolerate any sort of rough-housing in this lesson--I have a series of long and murderously boring detentions all lined up for whoever dares to be a show off," Most of the students just stared at her.

"With that said, I would like to direct all of you over to the brooms," Professor Drake trotted over to her own broom and stood next to it. As she waited for the students to do the same, her eyes darted from kid to kid. No signs of rough-housing yet... She noted, "As some of you may know, you need to stand to the side of your broom--don't pick it up, Johnson--and command: Up!" Professor Drake's broom shot up into her single open hand. "Now, students, have a go at it."

Round One:
- Your student will extend one of their hands (with palm open) directly above the broom and say "Up!" To figure out their success in this, roll a ten sided dice (the success of your actions based on the number of the dice roll is explained below)
- You are only "picking up" the broom, no flying yet (unless you want to be reprimanded the next round)

List of Events:
- Round One (7/21/2012)
- Round Two (7/23/2012)
- Round Three (7/25/2012)

Rules:
- Flying will start on Saturday the 21st.
- Post one form per post
- Have fun and obey your teacher!
- There will be three rounds! These rounds consist of: "picking up the broom," floating about a foot above the ground, and finally, actually zooming about!
XXXXXX Each of these rounds, you will roll a 10 sided dice to determine your character's fate.
XXXXXXXXXXXX1-2, or low numbers will cause your character to have an "accident" of sorts--whether it be a spectacular failure or just stumbling!
XXXXXXXXXXXX3-8, or medium numbers will cause your character, though still rough around the edges, to do their task without much of a problem.
XXXXXXXXXXXX9-10, or high numbers will cause your character to be the envy of everyone else. They're a natural!
- This is a RP event so only people with characters can participate.
- If your character is not RP approved, please don't introduce any strange quirks or family background (until approved), however, you are allowed to participate.
- If you want your character to fail, go ahead and make even their average rolls spectacularly bad--or if your kid has a future in Quidditch (or at least you hope) and they roll a low number, you can make it just a once-every-blue-moon-excessively-unlucky stumble!

This is going to be something strange, Sky thought, nervous butterflies in her stomach. She thought riding on brooms was just some sort of witch-tale... but for it to actually be in practice? This was too good to be true! Sky had seen brooms in Diagon Alley and though her father had offered to buy her the most expensive one in store, Sky refused. As much as she wanted to go home and try out riding a broom, she knew that first year students weren't allowed to bring their own to Hogwarts--and God only knows what Yuan would do with a magical broom lying about! He might just catch it on fire just to spite her.

The main reason Sky was anxious about riding a broom was because it was so unfamiliar to her--what other sport was like riding a broom? Despite her father promising her that she would be excellent at it, Sky couldn't help but wonder if there was some sort of trick to this all--or did you really just hop on a broom and get going? How was she supposed to fly these things--I should have read up more on this... Strangely, most books just told of the awesome adventures of Quidditch players on their brooms, not per-say, how to even get one to work.

But despite all this doubt, Sky hurriedly found a broom when Professor Drake led them towards them. This is going to be so much fun, Sky thought giddily, looking up impatiently as the Professor chattered on. Finally, the professor let them take the reigns. Is all I really do just say "Up"? Sky couldn't help but be skeptical. "Up?"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Lothar was stoked, though his expression didn't show it. He didn't want to come off as a newbie to the whole broom riding, even though he was. His father had explained all the basics of it to him but since they weren't allowed to fly outside of school let alone own their own broom for the first year he was as green as the other first years around him.

Lothar was only half listening to the teacher, mostly because he had already heard most of it. He held back a snort when the teacher said there was to be no rough housing or showing off. Yeah, right. There was sure to be at least one or two kids that did that. His eyes swept over the Gryffindor group which was acting rather rowdy at the moment. Oh yes, there was sure to be one of those that acted out and got in trouble, no doubt about that.

Lothar noticed that a bunch of the kids had started to grab brooms so he made his way over and plucked one from the bundle and stalked over to an empty spot by his fellow Ravenclaw, Sky. He shot a smile over at her and saw that she was completely focused on the teacher, so he reluctantly turned his attention back to the speaking professor.

Finally, she stopped speaking and directed them to have a go. A go? Lothar snorted and laid the broom on the grass beside him and then stood up and held out his left hand and gently called out, "UP."

Lia was, admittedly, skeptical about flying. Somehow, it had just never occurred to her or her parents to get a practice broom when she was younger. Her father had never been particularly good at Quidditch, and she had no idea how the rest of her family had done. She had no idea how this would go, especially so early in the morning. In fact, glancing around, she noticed that many of the other students were yawning and dragging their feet.

As Professor Drake explained the lesson, Amerilla allowed her mind to wander, questions flying through her head. What will it be like flying? How hard is it? What if someone falls? She hardly even noticed when the professor walked over to the brooms, only realizing that the group was migrating away from her.

Recognizing a few people from her classes, she hurried over, finding a broom next to one of her friends. She checked to see if anyone else was as lost as she was, and breathed in slowly. "Up!" she said firmly.

User ImageLouvenia had yawned again and covered her mouth in embarrassment. She had been so nervous about today she had slept rather fitfully the night before. Her dreams had been plagued with nightmares of her falling off her broom and breaking a lot of bones. She trembled slightly adjusting her glasses back up the bridge of her nose and listened to the professor drone on and on about what they were going to do.

She wrung her hands and glanced over at her cousin. How the heck was he so calm? Here she was a pile of nerves and tense out of her mind that she could barely even function properly! She shot an annoyed glance at him as he jauntily walked over to the pile of brooms and came back to stand next to a indigo haired Ravenclaw girl. He had promised he'd stay next to her! What was he trying to show off?

With gritted teeth, Louvenia stomped across the ground and grabbed a broom and made her way back to him. She was annoyed to find that someone else had taken up the spare space next to him and she had to walk down the line to stand next to a pink haired girl in the Ravenclaw uniform. She tried to ignore the repeated shouts of "Up" that were coming from the other kids as she gently placed the broom next to her.
"Up please." She said in a low voice.

Annnd... nothing happened. Sky stared down at the broom, perplexed. Now she was certain there was something more to this "Up" than what the teacher was saying. A bit peeved, Sky looked to the students along side her--oh! "Morning, Lothar, I didn't notice you there." Sky greeted, noticing that Lothar seemed to be having the same trouble as her. "Is this... This "Up" really going to work?" She asked, knowing that everyone else in the class--minus the other Muggleborns--probably knew much more about this flying business than her. Times like this, I feel so behind, Sky thought, feeling rather frustrated. Most of these kids grew up with magic all around them! Well... at least I get to ace Muggle studies without trying, Sky thought dryly.

Taking another glance around her, Sky was even more jaded to see that the "Up" thing was actually working for some kids! "Up!" She demanded the broom, glowering down at the broom. I dare you not to work! Her eyes narrowed. "Up." Nothing was working. A bit exasperated, Sky looked back towards Lothar--hoping to perhaps steal some secrets from him--only to see that another Ravenclaw girl just got the broom on her first try. "Great." She muttered, nudging the broom with her feet. "Up or I'm going to strangle you," Sky demanded with a bitter smile, a bit surprised when the broom actually lifted off the ground--sure, she had to bend down to catch it, but it was better than nothing, right?

Thunk! The broom smacked her square in the jaw. Rubbing her face, she looked over next to her, only to see a broom fly perfectly into her housemate's hand. Well, that doesn't exactly seem fair! she huffed inside her head. She noticed a few other people having troubles, but certainly nobody got hit! Who would've thought brooms could be so violent?

Scowling down at the broom, she figured it would be best to try again. "Up?" she repeated, this time more cautiously. As if bent on not cooperating with her, it rolled around on the grass, hovering perhaps an inch above the ground. Discouraged, she began to pleadingly repeat the command, hoping that it may just agree with her if she tried enough times.

Eventually, as if begrudgingly, the broom lifted slowly into her outstretched palm. Triumphant, she held the broom firmly at waist level, trying to discourage it from misbehaving again. This broom business is much harder than I thought...

Cecilia arrived at flight training a few minutes earlier and watched as everyone, even the professor, filed in. As she expected, she didn't know very many people in the group... Though she did recognize most of the other purebloods (not that there were many here, considering most went to Slytherin). Lothar Aleksie Alvesleben was in the middle of a group of Ravenclaw girls. The only reason Cecilia knew of his face--he and his father weren't that involved in the pureblood circles anymore--was because her mother made a point to show him to her when they were visiting Diagon Alley--"he may be a pureblood, but he isn't suitable," Cecilia could hear her mother scoff and almost see the ends of her mouth twisting in a frown. So instead of finding a spot by him, Cecilia filled in near another Hufflepuff--only to see, right before she did, a Ravenclaw girl getting squarely hit in the jaw by her broom. "Are you alright?" Cecilia inquired, frightened for not only the girl's safety but her own--who knew riding a broom could be so dangerous!

Cecilia flew with her instructor at home, but these brooms looked... ancient, to state it kindly. The bristles were going everywhere and Cecilia was almost certain the only thing she'd get out of this practice was a fistful of splinters. But reluctantly, she held out her hand and commanded, "Up, please." Flinching away from the broom a bit--who wouldn't, after seeing that poor Ravenclaw girl's accident?

It was nice to be outside first thing in the morning. Dew was still in the grass and the daylight was young. It felt like a good start as Eleanor walked out with the class and filed to listen to the professor's words. She was doing okay with this so far, since they only had to call the broom into their hands. No big deal...

And then it was chaos. People were threatening their brooms while other students were getting injured! It was too early and peaceful outside for things to get crazy already.

After looking at the others, she looked down at her own broom and reached her hand out Please be nice... She took a deep breath and willed the outdoor freshness to give her some courage. "Up," Ellie ordered a bit shakily, but it was an order just the same.

Lothar was annoyed that the broom only lifted a half inch off the ground. He glared down at it and then glanced over at Sky who had just spoken to him. "Good morning Sky, it's nice to see you. And..it is, but for some reason the brooms just don't want to work properly." He added giving his broom a slight nudge with his foot.

He glanced down the line at the other kids and was more than a little annoyed that Louvenia his cousin had gotten her broom to come up with her first try. Perhaps he'd do better on his second try? He'd better.

A smirk played at the corners of his mouth when he heard Sky's threat to her broom. Perhaps that would work for him? With another glare at the broom he held his left hand out over it. "UP, you bloody broom or I'll throw you in the fire"

The broom rose up and came to a stop an inch away from his hand. Lothar closed his eyes and sighed. "UP!" he said again and waited for the broom to come up all the way to his hand.
This broom was not getting the better of him.

Louvenia was rather stunned when the broom instantly whisked up into her waiting hand. She blinked and then looked over at the girl next to her when she heard a loud THUNK sound. Ouch..that had to have hurt. She winced seeing that the broom had swung up and hit the girl in the head.

"Are you okay?" she asked clenching her broom and leaning over to get a good look at the other's face.

Then she looked around for Lothar to see how he had done. She was surprised to see that the broom had only come up an inch off the ground and he was scowling at her in annoyance. She smiled and waved at him with her free hand. She never gave up an opportunity to show him up, they were constantly in competition with one another.

Then she turned back to the other girl to see if she had gotten the broom to come up yet. She stayed quiet as she watched the broom roll around and then hover a little above the ground. Finally..after a little while the broom lifted slowly to her hand.

"Good for you! you got it to work!" Louvenia said with a smile.

Did it twitch? She swore that she saw it twitch. "Up," Eleanor said again while she heard more threats. She looked at Lothar with distaste before going back to her own concentration. "Up, please, up..." It twitched again, and rose an inch. Ah-ha! Progress!

"Up, up, you can do it, up." Slowly, slowly it floated up higher and higher in halting bursts that seemed to require a lot of uncomfortable coaxing and word repitition. Eventually the broomstick was hovering just below the grasp radius, then in a final surge it flew into her hand with shaky yet startling force. Fortunately, it didn't move her arm out and about or throw her off balance.

She couldn't help but smile at her triumph. So you didn't have to be a total brute to make it work! Ha!

It made Ellie wonder how one could backfire so badly. She looked over with the other people that were asking about the pink-haired Ravenclaw's health.

Lia smiled at the two girls who were friendly, and concerned, enough to make sure she was okay. Inclining her head to the side, she smiled and nodded. "It's likely just a bruise! I've gotten hurt much worse before." she replied. Turning away and frowning, she glared at the broom in her hand. "Temperamental thing..." she muttered to herself. She wasn't one for grudges, but it was testing her.

Watching the other students get their brooms up with ease, she was struck with a bit of jealousy. "How is it so easy for some people?" she addressed to nobody in particular.

Tristan held her eyes upon the instructor whenever she was in view. She soaked in the words the Professor spoke and drank it all up like a living sponge. Flying! They'd be Flying today!!

In all honesty, Tristan felt a little apprehensive about completing the lesson. She wasn't one to like heights much at all. However, Tristan couldn't contain her excitement. Her lips stayed in a soft curl of a smile as she followed her fellow Ravenclaw classmates towards the brooms and stood beside one.

She studied the teacher's posture and commands. She stood sure, feet casually apart, back straight, arm steady and extended, hand open with the palm down and she spoke with casual determination through the command. Tristan took a deep breath and nodded to herself, going through the checklist now set in her mind and followed each one.

Stand sure...?
Check.

Feet casually apart?
Check!

Back straight with arm steady and extended?
Check, check, and check.

Hand open with palm down?
Check and check again!

She then took a moment to nibble upon her lip and gather her bearings. With her luck, she'd never get the broom to fly straight into her hand like the Professor did... But there was only one way to find out...

She steeled herself and pushed her glasses up on her nose with her free hand before speaking clearly and sternly.

"Up."

Cecilia was both surprised and relieved when the broom rose up to her hand without much of a hitch--and she was even more relieved when the pink hair girl confirmed that she was okay. Trying to downplay the fact that she just got her broom up on the first try, Cecilia responded, "My father paid a retired Quidditch player to teach me how to ride a broom," Cecilia explained, "A lot of us grew up with riding a broom," She reassured the girl, not wanting her to feel bad about being hit in the face.

Then she remembered something that made her smile, "My instructor played as Seeker for the Wasps in his day... and I remember, he told me that the first time he tried to ride a broom, not only did it smack him in the face, but when he tried riding it, he started going backwards!" Hopefully that would make the girl happier, not fearful--though Cecilia could see it going both ways so she quickly added, "He was one of the best seekers of his time."
