This will probably get moved into the Academy subforum when we finish renovations (we really will finish those someday soon) but for now I figured I would put it here so y'all got a look at the Character Development subforum. It's more than just a place to keep profile threads (though that's what it's used for mostly these days) but it's also a good place to get feedback on characters so if you've got a character you ever want help or critique on just plot it in here and the guild will take a look at it and comment.

In any case, reply to this post with your final project. Once those are all in we'll do the exam then let y'all loose in the dorms to claim and decorate your room (in a locked building while we finish making the rest outside it >.<).

Zane Vincent

Played by: Watervoir
Commitment: Hobbyist

Basics
Full Name: Zane Vincent
Alias: Black Hat

In the Great City of Valhalla, ‘Black Hat’ is the name associated with the leader of the notorious underground computer network known to the public simply as The Underground. Little, if anything at all, is known about this individual, but the group had not stirred enough trouble yet to incite a thorough investigation. Zane believed getting a hat from the local dollar store would be a great touch to his aspiring infamy and he wears it everywhere he goes, but if anyone were to really ask him about this particular accessory, he’d merely shrug and claim that he wears it because the Black Hat is his childhood hero.

In regular use, “Black Hat” is a security informatics term applied to computer criminals.

Age: 17
Gender: Male
Nationality: hails from a city by the name of Valhalla in a post-apocalyptic America
Ethnicity: Human; Caucasian

Concept
Archetype: An ordinary high school student by day and hacker by night. He is most likely to serve as mission control.
Tag Line: Boy genius and ringmaster of an underground computer network.
Description: In a post-apocalyptic society where a violent game show provides as the bread and circuses for the masses, Zane became an expert on computers at a young age and certain events led him to inherit The Underground, a criminal computer network. In this world where the plot is centered on the happenings within the grand city of Valhalla, Zane is an experienced computer scientist and hacker and will be allied with the underground rebel movement.

Appearance
Hair: Dyed jet black; his normal hair colour's brown; he has bangs that can cover his eyes if not swept away; the back of his haircut ends off at the shoulders
Eyes: Cobalt blue
Skin: Fair
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 145 lbs.
Build: Slender
Distinguishing Features: None.
Description: Dresses smart casual. A black top hat is his signature accessory. He has an array of prized possessions, among them being: his cell phone, MP3 player, credit card, driver's license, (chain) wallet, ID, (the) top hat, Bicycle cards, and a laptop. He can often be found with a lollipop or some sort of sweet in his mouth.

Personality
Likes:
1) His black top hat: it's symbolic of his role as leader of his virtual group, but if anyone asked, he'd claim that he's simply a fan boy of the leader of the underground group.
2) His, and just about any, material possessions: laptop, phone, cards, sweets, etc.
3) Meaningful relationships that don't hurt too bad
4) Baseballs: they've always held a special place in his heart ever since he’d solved one of his (then) biggest problems in school with one of them. Nowadays, he’d simply troll the offender over the anonymity of the net.
5) His brother, Kyler
6) Computers
Dislikes:
1) His father: while it's not an outright hatred, he believes it's his fault that his mother died. But it might be that Zane just needed someone to blame.
2) ICSS: because it contributed to the circumstances leading to his mother’s death. Although admittedly he is curious of what it's like to be under its influence
3) Bitter food, spicy food
4) Questions about his parents
5) Anyone who tries to control him
Hopes:
1) To never see his father ever again, and if they do meet up, to get the chance to beat the s**t out of him.
2) To uncover the government’s secrets. No one ever takes him seriously, though. He doesn’t himself half the time.
Fears:
1) To be unquestionably identified as the Black Hat.
Habits/Quirks:
1) drums on things when bored
2) double checks locked doors
3) uses mundane items as toys
Alignment: Neutral Good
Description: Zane is not the type to readily accept authority based on tradition, rank, or title. To him, respect must be earned and success is the ultimate meter of value. He doesn’t work well with adults, for example, who wish to impose authority/superiority on him. On the flip side, he also doesn’t like those who seem deadest on considering themselves inferior/incapable. In turn, he can be rather demanding in his expectations, but only because he wants to motivate others to achieve an adequate level of success in his eyes. He has strong confidence in his ability and talents and is prepared to lead if no one else seems up to the task, or if he sees a major weakness in the current leadership.

Zane is not the most socially adept individual. He’s not the type to wear his heart on his sleeve and had the tendency to skip over what he considers to be irrational social rituals, like engaging in idle chatter, bowing to higher-ups, or even giving a simple hello. Thus, at times, he can seem cold, reserved and unresponsive, especially if he is preoccupied or don’t know what to say. He is usually better in a working situation than in a recreational one; he’s not good at making small talk, but have him be informally teaching a friend or engaging in some significant discussion, and his tongue would be smooth.

Ability
Strengths: intelligent (scholarly), works fast, good actor
Weaknesses: impatient & intolerant, materialistic, untrusting, can’t cook
Skills/Special Abilities: computers whiz: specialty is hacking

Background
World/Genre: Zane comes from a post apocalyptic world set in the distant future. It has a mix of soft sci-fi and hard sci-fi elements in it, but it does not take place in space (or as far as he's aware). His genre is action, as much of the story is centered around a game show held in the prominent Neo-Coliseum. The government is an oppressive one, so part of the story too is for the heroes not necessarily to overthrow it, but to find out the secrets it is hiding. Besides that, the main heroes are popular competitors in the Games. Zane is not the main character, nor is he a competitor of the Games.

As far as the public is concerned, Valhalla is a massive city, situated in the only inhabitable location amidst a wasteland. Walls that grow up to form a dome to envelop the entire small nation protect the denizens from the dangers outside, which include flesh-eating beasts and extreme weather conditions. The city’s main form of entertainment is the game show held every night at the Neo-Coliseum.

Family:
Father: George Vincent
When one mentions the Vincents, Zane is the last name that comes to mind. His own reputation is shadowed by his father’s. George Vincent is a brilliant researcher and inventor in the field of neuro-electronics, which as the name suggests involves a combination of neuroscience and electronic engineering. His most celebrated and infamous invention was a machine that allowed for human intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS), a process in which electrical shocks are administered to a certain part of the brain to incite feelings of immense pleasure that are equal to or beyond that gained from taking illicit drugs.

George’s invention contributed to the death of his wife. Shortly thereafter, the government declared ICSS illegal after a portion of the populace began undergoing unauthorized surgeries to implant the electrodes that would land them either death or eternal bliss. The man himself was taken in by the government for ‘protection’, as they had termed it. Zane doesn’t believe it entirely, but he blames the man for what happened to his mother and is more than happy to avoid him for an indeterminate time longer.

Mother: Valiera Vincent
She was a fellow researcher, although more in the strands of neuroscience than anything. She was not part of George’s team that gave rise to the ICSS machine, although it was through the project that he had met her. He frequently sought her knowledge on the areas regarding the workings of the brain that he did not understand completely himself, and through their consultations with one another, they grew all the more closer.

Subsequently, a picture-perfect family bloomed from the pair. It didn’t last long. ICSS was pushed into the bowels of society when Zane was at the age of two, and soon Zane often found himself being told that his mother was ‘in her happy place’ when she wasn’t there to attend to him. By the time he was five, his mother was taken away to rehabilitation from addiction to the machines. However, with ICSS being such a new technology that, the authorities lacked the necessary psychologists with the proper know-how or patience to deal with Valiera. His mother was reported dead a few weeks after she had been taken in and it wasn’t until six years later that the kids found out she had committed suicide after negotiating with a few shady individuals for a couple minutes with the pleasure machine. Overdose was uncommon, but possible.

Younger brother: Kyler Vincent
Unlike Zane, Kyler, age 14, does not have the vivid memories of his mother haunting him, nor does he have his brother’s aloof attitude. Kind and compassionate, Ky is often too immersed in his school activities to really spend time with his only accessible family member. Ky goes to a separate high school than the one Zane attended, a prestigious one that demands for its students to board. The two rarely ever get to see one another, but nevertheless, Zane cares a lot for him and their infrequent moments together are never boring.

History:
Zane was born a permanent citizen of Valhalla – citizen because Valhalla welcomed all, and permanent because there were no other cities for hundreds of miles around, if at all, that supported life. Zane is a resident of the city’s innermost ring, an area sanctioned off for the highest of the social classes in the Great City.

Following the death of his mother, he started becoming more immersed in the world of the Neo-Coliseum and the Games , a program he had started watching at the tender age of four and initially had no interest in. Apart from that, little remarkable occurred in his childhood apart from his chucking a baseball in a guy’s face out of anger during his time as a student of Royal Heights Public School, for the third time. It was one of a few suspensions he’d get in his lifetime.

His naughty streak did not end there. During the last couple of days of his junior year at Royal Heights High School, he and some friends rewired the school’s network after a teacher had boasted about his recent handy work on that particular system to be impregnable. However, instead of a suspension, the kids were ordered to learn from their mistakes and Zane had been assigned to teach a programming course that emphasized the practice of computer ethics.

It was also during this time that he learned a few secrets about the government that he shouldn’t have. Through a series of unfortunate events, he and a friend found out that, among other things, government hides the fact that the entire city is underground instead of above it, but Zane doesn’t know why. He only knows that there are consequences to spreading the truth and therefore feigns ignorance of the knowledge of it. This was also the time during which he gained the role as the Black Hat, which is a story for another time.

Today, at age 17, he works a free schedule as a graphics designer among other things. Little would he know that he would soon be meeting his Neo-Coliseum hero Lance Omicron and that a whole new chapter of his life would begin.

Plotline
Do you have any goals in mind for your character? These are not necessarily things your character wants but what you want to do with them. Explain:
His role in the story will be to serve as the leader of a clandestine virtual network whose goal is to uncover the mysteries of the world around them and the political powers in charge, thus helping to further the main protagonists' plots.

Tableau
Write a brief scene introducing your character.

It wasn't lost to him how young the teacher looked. For a university, this man looked more like a teaching assistant than any professor, but then again, who was Zane to judge? He was only 17, and here he already was in a post-secondary institution. He wasn't exactly genius material himself, but he had gotten the acceptance, and figured that coming to the university would be to his benefit.

"Hm." It turned out this room was where he was supposed to be all along. Zane took a sneaking glance out the door, half-expecting to see Effie May standing there with a smug broad toothed grin. But there was no one there, so he simply turned back with a defeated sigh to get a hold of his surroundings before the teacher finished and it was his turn for introductions.

A look around the rest of the classroom gave him an array of sights. Apart from the unusually large male-to-female ratio in the room, the most bemusing sights were a roughened cowboy, what appeared to be a gigantic pile of rocks resembling a humanoid, and a girl obsessing over some elaborate paper folding that looked like something she would have been interested in. Zane was not usually considered "normal" in the settings he usually found himself in, but compared to these guys, he figured that he would probably fit right in.

It did not elude him that several others had a similar sense in fashion as he: a plain tee and jeans. He felt a tugging of his clothes and when he unconsciously brushed a hand against his collar, he found that his shirt was no longer an ordinary tee -- it was no longer a tee at all, having been magically replaced by a white, elbow-length dress shirt and a diagonally silver striped black tie. His top hat, skinny jeans and sneakers (his items of most concern) were still very much on his person, however. Before he could fully digest this out of the blue change in apparel though, there was a moment of silence that begged for his attention.

"Cool." Hooking his thumbs around the belt loops of his jeans, he greeted the silence with a firm stance and a grin. "Name's Zane. Got a little lost on the way, but here I am. I don't come from anywhere but a black cylindrical room of thought, or so I've been told, but the worlds I enter are all the same: happy looking cities equipped with twisted summer camps, post-apocalyptic violent game shows and..." His eyes trailed over the heads of the other students to the scenery rolling beyond the windows. "...this. Anything basically that involves a big ******** mind-screw." A shrug. "She likes to do these things to me. Not sure why. She being the crazy chick everyone calls Watervoir. Have yet to see her face, but I'll find it soon enough. I already know enough to be sure that she's only got a year and a half, maybe two years, of solid role play experience and that she hangs around certain threads in Gaiaonline's Barton Town." A silence for it all to sink in, and for him to consider his next steps to fend himself off against this 'role player'.

"And that's about it for me. Pleasure meeting you all and I hope to get to know everyone better at some point or another." As he began moving in to choose a seat, he wondered how many of these people knew about these supposed beings that controlled their every thought, their every action. There had got to be some way to band together and stop this...

...And the thought was lost. What had he been thinking about again?

Zane wasn't sure, and was suddenly too consumed by the thought of wanting a lollipop to stick in his mouth to care. He took a seat not too far from the front of the classroom, slid out his phone and tried making a text, in spite of the lack of signal bars on the top left of the screen. Vaguely, he registered the teacher fishing for more questions and the arrival of another student, another latecomer like him. Zane had no further questions at the moment, but there was an empty seat to his right that he didn't mind being filled.

This is for the Academy.

Reina

Played by: Isa-sama
Commitment: Gamer

Basics
Full Name: Reina Trasfer
Alias: N/A
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Nationality: Vallendale
Ethnicity: Half-elf, half-human

Concept
Archetype: An unfortunate child who wishes she could just be normal.
Tag Line: A girl destined to save the world, she just needs to find the courage to do it.
Description: In a world where hope seems lost, humanity continues on. The Cataclysm happened many years prior, but through sheer luck, a small amount of people survived. Some guess that it was a nuclear explosion that caused the Cataclysm. How or why it happened didn't matter. The only thing humans could do was to move on and attempt to rebuild what was lost.

In this significantly smaller world, religion still held sway. Some people believed that the first creatures God created were called Spirits. They were representation of various aspects of humanity and emotion. When God created humans, he had the Spirits kept in heaven while allowing the humans to live on Earth to prove their worth. Another aspect to this religion believed that the Cataclysm was actually the biblical apocalypse that got interrupted. Religious scientists found a way to bring Spirits into their world by sealing the Spirits to the soul of a human. The process of sealing left a mark on the body where the Spirit entered - the mark was called a Sigil.

The sealing process was incredibly painful on the "volunteer" who would hold the Spirit. If not done correctly, it was possibly for the Spirit to contact the human host. By whispering into the host's ear constantly, it could, and likely would, try to drive the human insane. Death was the only way to free the Spirit from the human cage. Increased agitation, depression, schizophrenia, and insanity were side effects of sealing. The people around them worried that one day these Sigil-users might go crazy...and they had every reason to worry. People feared what they did not understand, and Sigil-users were very firmly in the realm of things people did not understand. However, the human would have access to a power that the Spirit once had. For instance, if the Spirit could manipulate fire, it was possible for the human host to also have that ability. It was these spiritual abilities that greedy people craved.

There was a man named Aeon, an incredibly intelligent scientist, who firmly believed that the Cataclysm should have been the Apocalypse. Aeon needed to find the Sigil-user who contained the Spirit ordained to bring about the Apocalypse and release that Spirit to complete the work of the Lord. The second the Sigil-user died, the world would be destroyed. Needless to say, quite a few Sigil-users did not want to see the world be destroyed. Aeon disappeared after a long, arduous battle, and the group thought that the fighting was all over.

The group finally relaxed, and after some time, started to marry. Things seemed to be going well for them, and they had no reason to believe that they couldn't have families in this time of peace.

The Sigil-users discovered another odd effect of being who they were. Should they have children (which they did), the children would inherit the Sigil(s) their parents had. The powers that came with having a Sigil did not come into play until after they reached a certain age, but having a Sigil meant dealing with a number of problems growing up. People would ostracize the Sigil-users' children, and the normal people's children (who noticed how their parents would stay away from the Sigil-users) would mimic their parents' attitudes. These people would fear and hate the Sigil-users because the unforunate Sigil-users lead very dangerous lives (attempted kidnapping and attempted murder were not uncommon).

It was in this kind of environment that Reina grew up in. Reina was the daughter of Miles, who contained the Spirit of Life and Faith, and Ayame, who contained the Spirit of Fury and Passion. Oddly enough, Reina only had the Sigil for the Spirit of Life and Faith. Her ability manifested differently from her father's (who had essentially been immortal as long as he contained his Spirit); whatever she drew in her notebook would come to life.

It was when Reina and the other Sigil-users' children and barely become adults that Aeon reappeared. Aeon did disappear after the final battle, but he did not die. Aeon had hidden to heal his injuries and to find another way to bring about the Apocalypse. He believed that he would find a way to complete God's work by waiting. His moment came once the original group of Sigil-users had chilren. Aeon was ready to try again, and this time, he was confident that he could start the Apocalypse to finish God's work.

It was now Reina's and the other children's turn to prevent Aeon from destroying the world. She doesn't know whether they'll be able to do it, but she'll definitely do her best to prevent the end of the world from occurring.

Appearance
Hair: Waist length, wavy blonde hair
Eyes: Brown
Skin: Pale
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 130 lbs
Build: Straight-build
Distinguishing Features: Pointy ears and has this symbol tattooed in the middle of her back. Whenever she uses her abilities, it will have a very faint glow.
Description: She carries gray backpack filled with art supplies and snacks. She has a dark grey, elbow length shirt on, a pair of jeans and boots.

Personality
Likes:
1) Pencils – it was her first artistic medium because they were cheap to get at the marketplace. However, it never really stopped the loneliness she felt. She thought it was fine because it gave her more time to perfect her artistic abilities. Reina still loves drawing with pencils because pencils were the only thing that never failed her - when she needed to leave notes or describe things with pictures. It gave her an outlet, and she will always remember pencils fondly for it.
2) Creating stories and characters – since she spent quite a bit of time alone as a child, she got really good at creating imaginary friends.
3) Camping – when she felt the need to get away, she would go camping in the forest nearby and just unwind. No one would catch her cry or yell (or try to tell her what to do like her mother), and she could draw to her heart’s content.
Dislikes:
1) Watercolor – as a child, something about the delicate colors used to sooth her. Each imperfection made the art unique; there would never be another like it again. As she got older, she started to hate the paleness of the colors and found them utterly sad. The splotches where her tears hit the paper made her feel ashamed. You couldn't hide imperfections in watercolor, which irritated her to end. A mistake was still a mistake, regardless of excuses.
2) The thing she hates most of all is alcohol. Every single type. Doesn't matter what it is or how good it might taste to others, she will stay away from it like it is going to burn her. Seeing as her first experience with alcohol lead to her having a tattoo on her back, she thinks it would be a good idea to never drink ever again.
Hopes: The world won't end in a fiery apocalypse.
Fears:
1) Losing control of her abilities.
2) Losing her friends
3) Bullies.
Habits/Quirks: She is very very polite to people. When embarrassed, she doesn't like to look at people in the eyes. She also chews her nails when she's nervous.
Alignment: Neutral good
Description: Reina is a very shy individual who is very polite. When faced with confrontation, she would prefer to try and smooth out whatever the problems are than fight. When she does get angry, she tends to keep it to herself. She is a very creative person who enjoys drawing/painting whatever pops into her mind. Although she enjoys some time alone (if only to draw), she does like socializing with people. She does not easily socialize (introductions are the hardest part of socializing for her), but if a persona manages to get past her shy exterior, they would get a very caring friend. When she does argue/fight for something, it is usually for the benefit of someone else rather than for herself.

Ability
Strengths: She's very creative, which is useful when it comes to having the ability to bring drawings to life. She is a long range fighter who has surprisingly good aim with a pistol (though she's not terribly fond of it).
Weaknesses: She can freeze up when confronted, and she needs to be in the background of a fight. It takes time to draw something to defend herself, so while she is drawing, she is vulnerable.
Skills/Special Abilities: She can bring her drawings to life.

Background
World/Genre: Earth/Post-apocalyptic epic with fantasy elements
Family: She has a mother and a father, both who are Sigil-users with only one Sigil each. This should normally mean that she inherited two Sigils, but only one Sigil (her father's) has appeared on her.

Her mother, Ayame, holds the Spirit of Fury and Passion. Ayame is a very strong woman and quite strict. She is more stubborn than a mule and is a workaholic. She's very good at being a leader or a soldier, and because of her somewhat domineering personality, Ayame has a difficult time understanding Reina's gentler nature. She has pink hair and dark brown eyes. Though Reina was unaware of it until recently, Ayame is not her biological mother. This also explains why Reina never inherited the Sigil for Ayame's Spirit. Reina doesn't not know where her biological mother is, but she does know that Ayame has been there for Reina despite their misunderstandings. If Reina is asked about her family, she will get angry because she is still getting used to the idea that Ayame is not her biolgical mother.

Her father, Miles, holds the Spirit of Life and Faith. Miles is a calm and laidback sort of person. He is an elf, which is where Reina got her elven genes from. He is generally understanding, and he is the one that his daughter goes to for trouble. He has blonde wavy hair and blue eyes. He is her biological father, and there has been a bit of friction ever since he told Reina that Ayame is not her biological mother.
History: Because Reina came from Sigil-users, people worried that she would develop symptoms of insanity like many Sigil-users had. People's fear of Sigil-users' powers and generally dangerous lifestyles tended to make people keep away from Reina's small family. Her parents wanted to try and give their daughter a more normal life than they had, so the continued to try and get her to play with children her own age. However, children mimicked their parents' reactions, and didn't like to play with Reina. Many kids would say it was because she was an elf, she was ugly, or that she just had a horrible personality. Some would insult her parents and wonder aloud whether she would go crazy on the town, and maybe that they would be better off if she weren't around.

Rather than fight the other kids, Reina wilted under the scorn. She would try her best to be polite and kind to prove that she was a normal person. When it didn't work, she tended to go out to the forest nearby and camp for a night and draw. She had been drawing since she was incredibly young, and her parents were glad to see that she at least had an interest in something. The mother and daughter had many misunderstandings because Reina's inability to stand up for herself made no sense to the incredibly strong woman. Once Reina grew older, she understood that it was not because she was an elf that people hated her, but because she had a Sigil. Even though Reina hadn't gotten ahold of her powers, she was still viewed as a ticking time bomb by the villagers. Although she was finally old enough to appreciate the truth of being a Sigil-holder, Reina still feared that people disliked her solely for being part-elf. It had been a part of her childhood for so long, that it became an unconscious fear.

She had made one friend in middle school, a lively girl by the name of Flare. Flare had been a very vibrant girl who did not care for people's opinions and defended the quiet girl. Reina in return listened to Flare's wild (and occasionally dangerous) ideas and pranks. The two girls had been very close friends in this time. Flare was also the daughter of two Sigil-users, and was forced to endure four Sigils (her parents had two each). Flare had already unleashed one ability (she could manipulate blue fire) when she was taken out of school. The two girls had truly cared for one another, and it hurt Reina when Flare left.

Once she reached high school, her powers manifested. She had been doodling a picture of a butterfly at home when her lower back started to glow (though she'd been unaware of it at the time) when it flew off the page. She screamed, and when her parents came into the room, it took a moment or two before she could explain why she'd been screaming at a butterfly. It took many visits to the woods, the constant supervision of her parents, and many, many hours of practice before she felt somewhat comfortable with understanding the limits of her abilities. Reina needed to be very careful because if she let it slip, the sketch of a tiger could come out and either laze about on the grass or attack her. Heck, even the idea of having a tiger jump off the page was enough to scare her.

Her mother had taught her to shoot a pistol. If Reina had the ability to use whatever her mind thought up, Ayame felt Reina better have some extra abilities in case she didn't have an artistic utensil available. Reina learned, if a bit slowly, how to shoot a handgun, but refused to go for anything bigger. She also learned that if she was truly desperate, she could bite down on her finger to bleed out a stick figure to help her out of sticky situations.

After high school was over, she decided to travel to a nearby town for a fresh start and hopefully a good job. Unfortunately for her, she ran into some kidnappers (and with the help of a ragtag duo) who failed in their mission. This group contained two boys, Solar and Phalanx, who had appreciated Reina's abilities in the fight and convinced her to help them find the person who planned the kidnapping. After some time, they discovered that the person responsible for the mess was looking for all Sigil-users. The group had saved another girl from being taken away, and to Reina's everlasting surprise, it had been Flare. However, this Flare was not the same bright girl that Reina knew as a child. This Flare had unlocked two Sigil powers and was suffering the consequences of it. The group learned about the history of the past attempt at capturing Sigil-users, the plan to destroy the world, and the man behind it all: Aeon.

Now that Aeon has revealed himself again, it's up to the children and adults to work together to prevent Aeon from completing his plan. Hopefully, he will stay dead after they defeat him again.

Plotline
Do you have any goals in mind for your character? These are not necessarily things your character wants but what you want to do with them. Explain:Doing these assignments has made me understand what can motivate her to do crazy/heroic things, and now I am not worried that I've made an unrealistic character. I might want to use her in an RP later on.

Tableau
Write a brief scene introducing your character.
In a fight for her life, the best thing Reina could do was run and hide. The blonde girl didn't know why these people were chasing her, and she didn't want to stop and find out. Her mother had been very adamant about teaching Reina how to protect herself, but the gentle-natured daughter never took to the lessons. The only thing she really got good at was running.

Reina found a tree and started to climb up it. In her panicked state of mind, she very shakily took off her backpack and grabbed her sketchbook and a pencil. She ended up dropping some colored pencils, but that was alright. She had the utilities she needed to defend herself.

She heard voices not so very far from her. Angry and demanding. Whatever it was they were after, she wanted nothing to do with it. The horror stories she'd heard about what men liked to do with young women who traveled alone were enough to keep her awake at nights. The strokes on the paper started out weak, but after the first two or so erratic lines, she knew exactly what she wanted to draw.

The picture of a gun had almost been completed (all she needed was to finish drawing the handle) but at that point, someone had grabbed onto her leg and pulled her out of the tree. "Notsa fast lil' lady," the man's voice croaked out, "We've got some bus'ness with ya." Reina's wide eyed fear only made the three men around her grin. "What's a pretty lil' girl like you doin' 'round these parts?" "I-I-I--" They laughed at her. That was alright with her. Laughing meant distraction.

"I w-wanted to g-go to th-the vill-age nearby...Please, let me go..." The leader of the trio crouched in front of the girl, "Then maybe ya shouldn' have left in the first place, eh?" He reached for her face and pulled back her hair, "A pretty lil' elf like ya shouldn' be alone out here. There's thieves, and robbers, and worse about." An dark grin appeared as he yanked at Reina's hair. "Why don'tcha stick with us? We'll take gooood care of you."

Reina started to tear up. There was no way to overpower this man with brute strength alone. "Come on, girlie. Time t'go," he pulled her hair to force her to stand. In that moment, she punched him between the legs and dove for her book. The leader had fallen to the ground, and the two men dove after Reina. The two second head start allowed her to pick up the sketchbook and run. She blindly ran while drawing the rest of the gun and tripped face first.

"Nowhere to go now, girlie," said one of the thugs. She sat up and turned around to point a simple 9mm glock pistol at them. "Get away from me!" Tear marks were down her cheeks, and she watched them stay away. A shot rang out courtesy of the ringleader. It seemed he no longer cared about having an untainted girl, if she was disabled, she wouldn't be able to run. The shot missed Reina by a foot, but the shot she aimed at his chest not even three seconds later rang true.

The two men stared at the dead thug, and then looked at the pipsqueak blonde in front of them. She got up and was the very definition of a crazed woman. "If you even pick up that gun, I will shoot you too." Her eyes were wide, and her whole body was shaking, but she looked like she meant business. "Please just go away. I-I'll give you to the count of five. One..." The two bolted off. She put down the gun and started hyperventilating. Once she had calmed down, she bottled up the emotions. As much as Reina wanted to cry and hate herself for killing a man, she needed to get to the village before sundown. Otherwise, she'd have to defend herself again in the dark where she wouldn't be so lucky.

She went over and picked up the other man's gun. It had been a .38 revolver. She placed that in her bag and left the body right where it was. She knew this was an image that would haunt her for nights to come. Reina knew she had to defend herself, but killing someone was still wrong. "I-I'm sorry. God watch over you." The only thing she did for the man was shut his eyes closed. She turned to grab the notebook that held the barest outline of a drawing of a gun. She ripped the page, and the 9mm pistol she had placed on the ground disappeared.

Reina was not strong, and she was very easily afraid. However, she was not a quitter. She wiped the tears from her face and continued down the road. She would cry about the man once she was in the safety of a room within a town.

Background
World/Genre: Roman/Medieval Fantasy. Political.
Family: The Je'lesh; the group of similar golems hellbent on learning knowledge. Which is everything.
History:At the dawn of the Era of the Gods a saurillian of capable power tapped into a strange crystal formation found deep within a mountain. This crystal corrupted the lizard and turned him into Kaifeng, Master of Rock. His dominion over all things coupled with a power-hungry mindset made him intent on becoming a god. He raised an army of golems specifically for this purpose, for in his mind the fear of the people would cause them to revere him as a god. And so the people did.

They praised him and worshipped him; trembling in fear of his mighty golems. Kaifeng’s domain became one of warped earth through his demonstrations of power, and unrest for none could challenge the god. Centuries passed under the rule of Kaifeng and other false gods before heroes arose. These heroes led armies, enacted subterfuge, decimated, and finally obliterated the false gods of Sauril.

The legacy of Kaifeng were to be his golems, wandering the ashen desert without purpose after they had crushed their master.

This is where D’cund’s people began.

The golems had finally come to the decision that without purpose there is no reason to wander, and so they stayed still and began to sink into the desert sands. They sank for nearly a decade before a few of the faster ones came through to a large cavernous area.

This was the legendary Kupaera al Keinkin. The Library of Keinkin, the first place of magic on Sauril founded in the middle of the Era of the Sundwellers. It was a sacred place, and held an artifact that empowered knowledge on all those who were in proximity.

And so it was that D’cund’s people became intelligent.

For years the golems studied within the library, learning of magic, of lifestyles, of stories and of legends. The library was the repository for all of the knowledge in its time. But as time went on and the golems learned, they eventually began to drain. The solution, they discovered, was for them to carve out their offspring from the desert rock, and with sacrifice, submit their lifeforce to it. When it was learned that some of the knowledge of the creator was passed on in this process the golems, or “Je’lesh” as they had come to call themselves, accepted it as a means of rebirth, rather than simple death.

For centuries they studied undisturbed in the library, and it was soon after D’cund was given his birthright that the library had been discovered. The Je’lesh hid among the stacks and sunk into the walls, fearful of the intruders. When the intruders began to take scrolls and books away they held back the urge to let themselves known, but the final straw was when they discovered the books and scrolls were being burned.

With ferocity D’cund and the Je’lesh attacked the intruding saurillians and the saurillians had no defense of magic to stem the fury of rock. Those that got away, however, came back with magi, and attacked the Je’lesh relentlessly in their library thus forcing them to retreat lest the magi completely destroy the knowledge within.

Displaced and unsure, the Je’lesh split into groups. All of them had different means of obtaining knowledge, and D’cund led the group that was responsible for wandering the world and learning from the saurillians. His group thinned in number as they became guardians of towns in exchange for knowledge and lore. When it was that D’cund had become the last, he chose to wander the ruins of the ancient saurillians and learned of the Aspians, which had been shunned from history. His study into them led him to more ruins, most quite forgotten, until eventually he was discovered by members of the group which had driven the Je’lesh from their home. They had been destroying the ruin, which had carvings of Aspians across it, and did not notice D’cund when he arrived. He watched, incensed, as they carelessly destroyed pottery, papers, carvings, tablets, everything. When it became so that he could bear it no longer he attacked.

D’cund had lost his arm and some of his chest in the ensuing battle and was weakened well beyond the capacity to carve his offspring so that his knowledge may live. He lay on the floor for days staring at the carvings in the ever-changing speckled light, and eventually slept.

D’cund was the first of the Je’lesh to dream.

His dreams were amazing visions of the things he had seen and learned coming to life. Historic battles, romances, magic lessons, horror stories, worries, hopes and wishes of the people he had read about came alive. Would it be that D’cund could never wake, he never would have but he was disturbed by a vibration coming through him.

And so it was that D’cund had learned the Hum.

The Hum is the means by which the Je’lesh could heal by the use of frequency, and D’cund studied it to find that it could rejuvenate them as well, effectively ending the carving and diffusion cycle. D’cund found that the Hum could be used to communicate as well, as he Hummed the Je’lesh felt it and began moving towards it, curious to discover the source. D’cund’s discovery became a revelation for the Je’lesh and they praised him as he taught them to dream. And through dreaming they, too, learned to Hum.

Plotliwne
Do you have any goals in mind for your character? These are not necessarily things your character wants but what you want to do with them. Explain: D'cund will continue learning of his Hum and of course, the people around him. He is designed to be an inquisitorial character and as such will ask question of and about those around them in my effort to make them think and in his effort to learn more about them. He is also designed to be strikingly different enough to have people after him as well, hopefully always being able to get along with others.

Tableau
Write a brief scene introducing your character.
The shifting weight resounding a small avalanche across the otherwise empty cavern told the lurking saurillian scout what was possibly waiting in the dark. He was at once terrified and intrigued, more so when a voice spoke to him smoothly in his ears, like listening to the whispers of a God.

"What purpose here, saur?"

The scout could not help but respond,

"I've come to learn of this place."

"To what gain?"

"So that we can destroy it in honor-"

The saurillian was cut off as in the distance to bright stars shone from the darkness, coupled with the movement of something large, something heavy.

The Je'lesh.

"Please...please no..."

It was too late, the humming in the saurillian's ears reach full strength and pounded away in his head as he felt the ground give way beneath him. He was sinking into solid stone.

"This is not your place saur, and it is not theirs. The preservation of knowledge must be upheld."

The saurillian squealed in terror and agony as the stone floor began to crush him as he sunk within. His ears felt as they would burst, and his legs were pulp and gore in the grinding rocks.

In the distance the stars were gone but above him a different voice sounded, not nearly as eloquent, and sounded as coarse as the stones from which no doubt the thing was made.

"Yankta omelech, vir botten!"
(Like a pest, you will die.)

And so the scout's life ended with the crushing weight of a boulder on his head.

History:
-Planet much like ours.

-Ruled by logic and decency.

-A fellow by the name of Gauss discovers Illogic.

-Renames himself Dr. Gauss von Hammerziet, takes over an island to do his work.

-Sigma’s parents are part of a scientific commune, they give birth to one Derrick Olindo Rel (Sigma).

-Sigma’s parents give birth to his sister, Kalina Tremont Rel, Sigma is age 10.

At 16 Derrick and his sister had been sent on vacation to their grandparents when disaster struck. In an event that would come to be known as the Ziet Raids, several scientific communities were thrashed, many people were killed and many were kidnapped. Derrick and Kalina’s parents were among them and Derrick felt it his duty to join the growing military to struggle against von Hammerziet’s Reapers. His grandparents would not allow this as his grandmother was frail in her old age and his grandfather had dementia, meaning his sister would not be raised correctly. Derrick understood and so took care of Kalina as best he could with both his grandparents until his grandmother died. Derrick was 19, Kalina was 9. His grandfather went missing soon after the funeral, and the two were left alone on his grandparent’s farmstead.

Kalina had become Derrick’s world. Despite the ongoing battles and struggles in the outside world Derrick taught Kalina manners, language, math, and science with his considerable background with scientific parents, and the help of the grandparent’s encyclopedias. They maintained farm animals and had help from a few locals in the nearby town. For five years they lived alone and led simple lives.

It was soon after Kalina’s 14th birthday that the sky darkened with unnatural purple clouds, and it began to rain a glowing purple rain. Kalina and Derrick herded the farm animals into the barn and stayed there with the animals as the downpour grew. They stayed in the barn for what seemed like days tending to the animals and eating the horse’s oats. When the rain finally stopped they opened the barn to discover that the plants had become black, and the chickens they could not save had turned black as well, and died.
The animals that had not tasted the rain refused to eat the black grass and drink from the darkened waters. Kalina and Derrick decided to go into town to see what other effects the rain might have had. The town seemed to be deserted, there were no people, the pair spent all day looking in the buildings and houses for any sign of them, but apart from some signs of mass panic, there were no signs of life. The two returned home fearful that the townsfolk had met the same fate as the chickens, and spent what little of the day was left coming up with ideas of how to herd the cattle and pigs to another town further away.

Bellies full of food that wasn’t oats; they slept soon after twilight, but were disturbed in the night by shrieks and screams coming from the town. When Derrick determined that the shrieks were getting closer he and his sister fled to the cellar and barred it from the outside world. The shrieks continued and soon were right outside, and the two could hear the cries of animals being slaughtered in the night. The creatures making the noises began to bang on the cellar doors, knowing the two were within. Derrick told Kalina to hide underneath a large pile of empty burlap bags and to not make a noise, and not to come out until dawn.

Derrick stood, with pitchfork in hand, and waited for the creatures to burst through the cellar door. In that moment he was prepared to die for his sister, what happened instead was much worse. With the crackle of splintering wood, a long arm of the mechanical Reapers burst through and wrapped around him. Lifting him out of the cellar and placing him in a containment unit. Around Derrick in their own personal containment units were monsters, shrieking and clawing in the glass jars.

-Derrick gets taken to the lair of Dr. von Hammerziet and experimented upon to create a smart Infected. He holds on to his sanity by believing his sister managed to escape the Raid, but slowly succumbs to the madness of the disease.

-After a while von Hammerziet restores him, and Derrick becomes Experiment Sigma; The Imperfect. Sigma maintains a few mutations from the infection, but for the most part looks like his old self but for white hair and one black and yellow eye and one glowing purple eye.

-Sigma attempts to escape, intent on finding his sister. During his attempt Dr. von Hammerziet taunts him by telling Sigma there is nowhere to go and he already knows what Sigma wants. Through a series of elaborate traps Sigma is recaptured and taken to see the Dr. The Dr. continues to talk to Sigma and eventually gets to the point. Dr. Gauss von Hammerziet had his sister all along, and she had become Experiment Chi; The Perfect. He sets them together in an arena to fight to decide whether her ability to mutate at will against his imperfect mutations would win. Through no will of her own she fights her brother. His speed proves greater than hers and he escapes the arena and out into the world, vowing to find a way to cure her.

Plotline
Do you have any goals in mind for your character? Explain: Sigma is intended to be a bit more dramatic than D'cund. He is supposed to be the type of character that comes from conflict and is played straight. As an exemplary kind of character one might find coming from a world of black comedy and dark humours.

Tableau
Write a brief scene introducing your character.

Drip, drip, drip.

The cell washed with cold air, a breeze from outside filled with the smell of the sea, but no comfort.

Drip, drip, drip.

The man writhed on the ground, feeling beneath his skin the grit of sand and rust.

Drip.

Somewhere in the block a man screamed, though his voice tapered to gargles of incoherency and finally went quiet.

This was Derrick's home now, a cell in the bloodworks, Dr. Von Hammerzeit's human experimentation laboratories. How long had it been? Derrick would never know, but when he looked out the high window the moon stared back at him, a cold eye in the night. The young man shivered as he rose from his spot, the cold air struck his bare skin as he had been stripped of clothing. He looked down to see what might've been left but found that the only things which covered him were dirt and rust.

As Derrick wrapped his arms around himself he hoped, hoped beyond hope, that his sister was spared the fate he had found for himself. That she too was not standing naked in a cell by the seaside shivering as the damnable cold wrapped her body in its embrace.

With the energy of this hope he moved to the bench and sat, his skin repulsed by the coldness of the rusted metal bench. It was all so cold. And yet it was not death.

His ears perked when a rhythmic sound of singular footfalls sounded down the hallway outside his metal door. It stopped close, and Derrick heard the sound of metal shifting and then the sound of a human voice, though muffled by the distance.

Another breeze swirled in from the window and made the cell more unpleasant, and the footfalls started again, this time coming to a stop right outside his door. The young man stared expressionless at the rusted metal rectangle for what seemed like hours. He heard the noises of scribblings and even a few hums and grunts. Then the viewport slid back on the door.

"Ah, yes, subject sigma. Good you're awake, we'll start with you after dinner."

It slid shut.

Derrick began to weep.

The boy yawned as he looked up from the book. He gazed at the drawing and frowned. Sighing, he closed it and stood. Walking away would be good for him. He can't just sit and draw for too long.
"I guess I should get going," he said to himself. He stuk the pencils in his pocket, picked up his sketchbook and left the place he was staying.
"Come back anytime," the kind woman said with a wave. The boy waved nervously back.
As he left the town, he was approached by a stranger in a mask. "Where are you going, boy?"
"Just looking for a place to settle," he replied, not looking at the man.
"What is your name?" The stranger's voice didn't sound agressive.
"Evan, now will you let me go?" The boy desperately wanted to leave and avoid making a friend he knew would end up trying to hurt him.
"You can call me Veil. How about you come with me? It is always better to have a friend."
Evan looked at the man. "And why go up to a random stranger like this?"
Veil smiled. "I am just offering you to join me. Like I said, it is better to stick with others."
