The Candidate
Name: Ailin
Age: 16 (as of 10/23/12)
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft/Rank: Apprentice Harper - Flutist
History: Born in Atlini Hold, Ailin's parents thought they were being clever when they named him after the hold rather than the custom of combining their own names. The fact that they'd already born 4 other children and were running out of options had nothing to do with it of course. They were small cot holders and while having the extra help was nice, their place was much too small when considering the futures of their children. Thus they began sending their children to nearby craft halls for training, keeping only their eldest home to inherit the hold. Ailin was sent to the Harpers at the age of 11. While he had a pleasant voice and fit in with a chorus well enough it was discovered at the Hall that his talent lay more in instruments, particularly the flute. Three turns later and he's had enough training to be an accomplished player though he's still far from walking the tables. His dedication to learning anything else has been less than stellar.
When the Search dragon arrived at the Hall, Ailin was picked out as well as a couple other boys. While his first reaction was 'nah, I'm fine here.' The Rider and the other chosen boys pressed him. Ailin gave in rather than put up a fight. It wouldn't hurt him to go, Stand for a clutch, then return to the Hall.
Home Life: While his parents were never neglectful, they didn't coddle their children either. Complaints and tattling were unwelcome, you were expected to solve your problems on your own. While they all loved each other more or less, there was a definite under-current of every man for himself among the siblings. Ailin being the youngest was often on the bottom of the pecking order and in general it was easier to stay there and out of the way than to try and better his situation.
While they knew of dragons and their riders, they never factored much out in their little corner of the world. None of the children had aspirations of Riding and while on occasion they'd see one at a distance, none had ever met one personally. They just weren't an important part of life.

Description: Ailin is tall for his years, at 5'9" he seems stretched out and gangly, half grown. He appears to be made from shades of brown, ranging from the pale sandy brown of his hair, to his tanned skin and it's heavy coating of dark freckles, to his sable eyes. He has a rat like face with a long thin nose, matching pointed chin and straight brows. Ailin's hands are also long and thin, his fingers dexterous and movements sure. Ailin's hair springs into unruly curls if left too long so he usually keeps it trimmed short.
- After a turn at Trine Ailin has filled out into a more athletic build. He's still scrawny but he looks less like a scarecrow and more like a young man.
Personality: Passive: This kid is very much go with the flow. While that means he'll rarely get into a fight with someone, he's also not liable to step in to solve a problem. He'll look sideways if someone else is being bullied or breaking the rules. It's not his place to get involved. This can lead to a sense of aloofness or indifference.
Ailin hasn't put much thought into what HE wants to do with his life. So far it's been guided by others and never actually put into his own hands, or so he thinks. He's always had the option of choosing another route but he'd rather let others direct him than admit that he can choose himself. It can make him hard to get along with if you're also a quiet personality as he'll rarely suggest something for the two of you to do and will often let a conversation fall silent rather than offering his own opinion.
He does enjoy playing the flute and there are plenty of other small things in life but nothing has become his focus. He likes the Harper Hall and wouldn't mind possibly working with records, he had a decently legible and quick hand.
Cheerful: When engaged, Ailin can be a rather pleasant person to talk to. He's a good listener and while he's not one to go to for advice, if you need to rant you'll find an uncomplaining pair of ears in this little harper boy. He's no optimist but he's not going to rain on your parade either.
While he's not lacking for casual friendship it's hard for him to make really close connections with others. It requires a certain amount of effort from both parties that he may not be up to at this point in his life.
Naive: Up until he left for the Harper Hall, Ailin's experiences with people outside his family and neighbors was limited at best. He'd never even met his Lord Holder or been to the main Hold. He still retains some of that farm bred innocence of the world. He's almost woefully ignorant of the current political climate between the Weyrs. The tales of death and betrayal are merely that, tales waiting for the hand of a Bard to turn them into song and legend.
His own experiences with real world dangers are limited to the every day hazards of plowing fields and dealing with temperamental herdbeasts and runners. The most frightening moment he can recall was when his second oldest brother was gored in the thigh by their bull. He took a horn deep into the inner thigh and broke his forearm as the beast threw him to the ground. Faced with a moment for quick decision making, Ailin was frozen with fear. He knew his brother needed help but he didn't know how to get it for him. It wasn't until his eldest brother discovered them in the field and took charge, giving Ailin orders, that he was able to break free of that fear and be helpful.
Self PreservationGrowing up the youngest in a series of brothers, Ailin learned quickly that only his own hide mattered. Taking the hit or sticking his neck out for others never got him anything but a good 'brotherly' pounding. It was easier just to agree with whatever they said and move on with life.
His fellow Harper apprentices don't exactly appreciate it when he doesn't lie or cover for them. He does regret the fact that his ways won't earn him that kind of close friendship and trust but he's not changing anytime soon. If others want to throw themselves under the stampeding herdbeast then by all means, they're free to do so and he wishes them the best of luck. He will not be taking that risk.
