The rocky lands of the Eastern Territories was full of wealth as the people here at Crystal Mines dig for jewles and rare gems. Its not bad here once you get use to it. The people here make their livimgs by trading or even sometimes buying as there were different shops like a clothes store, vases, jewlery and anything else. According to my father who hs lived longer then I since I was born in a family of Minstrel. People who are gifted with singing or playing an instrument that can play tricks on ones mind or if in danger to use as defense.

My father lived here when this place was discovered and when the people settled in. According to my father, the Eastern Territories were always in disagreement as many centuries ago, there was war. My father wouldn't tell me who won but we now live in peace sort of. Again the,Eastern and Western are at a disagreement.

I shook my head as it was early morning and some of the people were off to work and opening up their shops. "Did you hear that the territories are fighting again." I heard two ladies speak. "Yeah and I heard they said not to let any western people here." One of the men jumped in the conversation. "I heard that too but we need to trade or else we throw off the others trade like Ravenheart the Sourthen Isles."

I drowned out their talk as I pulled out my violin and started playing about bringing peace. I fear that if they don't come to an agreemen, war will once again break out and if that happens the others will soon follow.

Thomas trudged his way up the muddy lane, finally relieved of his duties at the front lines for two weeks. But now that he had some time, he was at a loss for what to do. He heard beautiful violin music streaming from a nearby second floor window. He stopped in his tracks and felt filled with a sorrowful peace. Thomas cleared his head and forced himself to keep moving. Suddenly, he found himself at the door of a local tavern - "Wyndam Tavern". He looked down at himself. He was still in uniform, his blonde hair tied back but he had no clothes of his own since the vampire army had set his camp ablaze. He sighed sadly. "I suppose this'll have to do," he told himself. He opened the door.

Immediately, a beautiful aroma greeted him. He made his way over to the bar amid whispers and watchful eyes. He sat down and retrieved a generous pile of coins. "I'll have today's special and a tankard of ale." The barkeep nodded, slid the coins from the bar, and wandered to the back. The whispers ceased and the conversations continued at normal volume. The man returned with a bowl of stew, a large chunk of bread, some soft spreadable cheese, and the ale. Thomas nodded his thanks and began to eat.

"What news do you bring of the war," the barkeep asked him. Thomas froze; he could feel everyone watching him again, though the conversations continued. He put down his spoon and cleared his throat a bit. "There's really not much to tell. Vampire armies aren't giving any ground, nor are they gaining any." The barkeep was examining his uniform jacket. "Two stars," he whispered, "On your right collar... Please," he said looking up, desperation in his eyes, "Did you know a Matthew Wyndam?" Thomas's heart lept.

"Yes, sir... I did." Mr. Wyndam's eyes widened. "Is he alive?" The whole tavern was silent; his breathing was the loudest sound in the room. He felt a lump rise in his throat from the attention. He swallowed hard. "He's alive."

Cheers errupted and the conversations began again, more lively than ever. Wyndam wiped his eyes on a rag and moved away. Relieved, Thomas continued his meal.

I put my violin away as I walked into the bar. Everyone looked at me. "Hey Ms. Trinity lovly music you played this morning." I smiled as the old timer who comes in every morning and drink old brandy. "Thank you very much. I am happy you enjoyed it. My fathwr told me to tell tou he has the order you have wanted." He gave me.a toothless smile. "Thanks."

I turned to the bar and saw.a guy in an solider's uniform. I looked away aa u looked at the bartender. "Hello my father sent me here to pick up his order." I held on to my violin.

Thomas surveyed the woman from the corner of his eye. She was beautiful, to be sure. Yet there was something about her, a certain clarity and wisdom to her eyes... She caught him staring and he looked away quickly as Mr. Wyndam scurried to the back room once more to fetch her order. He continued to drink his ale, wondering what he would do with himself today. He was far from his home on Belvanue - an island for pirates, shady dealings, gambling, and businesses of ill-repute. He closed his eyes and longed for the simpler days of making swords for the armies. Now, he was conscripted into the army and his whole world had changed.

He refilled his tankard and thought long and hard about his life on the front lines. The battle raged in the land between the Eastern Territories and the unexplored parts of the Northern Territories. Some platoons were stationed on the southern side of the Eastern Territories by the shore. The vampires were growing restless and seeked to expand their hunting grounds. Unfortunately, this made them more violent and daring than ever. More than once he had gone to sleep expecting never to wake up again. And that fire... It was almost as if he could see it right there in front of him. Once more, the peaceful feeling flooded through him. Strange, he thought, Why does this keep happening? I wonder... is it her?

He glanced back to the girl. She was looking away from him. He could hear Wyndam tinkering in the back; he knew there was little time left. Finally, he gathered his courage. He turned to her. "I'm Thomas Beaux-Borden. I believe I heard you playing the violin this morning?"

I was getting nervous as I felt his stare. A couple of times I would catch him and he looked away when I looked. The bartender Mr. Wyndam was looking in the back as I heard him rummage through. Waiting felt endless but of course I learned to be patient as I have been alive for at least a century.

I finally got a look at him as he turned and talked to me. I looked at him and saw that his blonde hair was pulled back and he wore his uniform proudly but his eyes says he wish to be home. I blushed at his complament. "Pleasure to meet you Mr. Borden, I'm Trinity Aurora. Yes that was me playing out near the shoos. I play in the morning, afternoon, and night."

Thomas loved the sound of her voice. It was beautiful, almost as if she was singing. He smiled and returned to his breakfast. He had to think quickly; he hadn't really planned much more to say. "It's very beautiful music," he said glancing back at her. She smiled. They were silent.

Eventually, she sat as they heard a crashing from the back and cursing. Thomas supressed a chuckle. The memories of the fire threatened to push through again. He forced them back. After all, he didn't want to remember why he was given a week's leave... and what he was really meant to do with his time.

The very thought of his secret mission chilled him to the bone. The fear threatened to come to the surface and consume him. He calmed his fear and returned his thoughts to Trinity. He felt calmer when she was around, he realized. Whether she was playing music or simply sitting, he felt at peace. He wanted to know more about her, more about this entire town, as a matter of fact. But how?

A million scenerios flashed through his mind. Most of them ended in rejection and more ale. He forced himself to stay calm and think logically. He needed something to do today, and her father's shop seemed like an interesting start. He knew he would never get to know her better if all he did was feed her flattery. He changed tactic. "So, what kind of shop does your father own?"

I smiled as I turned my attention back to Thomas. "Is it alright to call you Thomas?" I tilted my head as my blue eyes looked into his. I smiled again by his complement. "Thank you. I play what I feel and seeing you in your uniform made me get an inspiration. Are you here for a reason?" I knew it was a stupid question. "Never mind don't answer that."

It was silence as I didn't know what to say to him until he asked about my father. "My father owns a gem shop. He sells rare gems or if special orders by making them into jewlery. Of course Crystal Mines is popular for its gems but trading out beats it though."

Thomas smiled at her, "I tell you what, you can call me anything you want if you show me around. That is, if you're not busy. We can start with your father's shop." He waited anxiously, feeling he was going to be shot down. Just then, a man in a similar uniform came bursting through the door and covered the distance between them in three strides. "Urgent message," the man said, "Maybe we can step outside?" Thomas bowed to Trinity. "Just one moment, madam. I'll be right back." He felt the eyes on him once more as he rushed out with the other soldier.

"What is it, David," he asked once they were safely outside. He could see some of the people from the bar peering out the window intently, hoping to hear. "It's your orders. Here, see for yourself. I already read it." David handed him a parchment and Thomas rolled his eyes.

Soldier Thomas Beaux-Borden --
Your orders are as follows: seek out the vampire lord hidden within the city under the name of Matthias. He must be killed within the week. If you fail, this will be the death of us.

Thomas folded up the note. "Brilliant. Anything else?" David shrugged. "Nope. I'm headed back to the front lines m'self. I overheard out dear commanding officer say that they hid him in the city to grow stronger and once he does..." He drew a finger across his neck indicating death. "Oh, and did you hear we have a new prince? He's to be corronated soon and sent to the front lines. Wonder how long this will last. The older prince died two weeks ago. I heard it was something about a fire." Thomas paled. "Yeah..."

"Well, I'm off," he said cheerfully. "David, wait. What about the younger prince? Isn't he supposed to take the throne?"

"Naw, he married a human. Can't take the throne now, can he? His cousin is taking the throne. They're both going to join our 'valiant efforts' soon. Hey, while you're here," he said a bit quieter, "Try and recruit some females, eh? Good man. And cheer up," he called over his shoulder, "You're the best Runner we've got." He departed. Thomas hung his head and tried with all his might to forget the fire as he entered the tavern once more. Trinity was waiting, packages in hand.

"So, how about that tour?"

I smiled as I walked outside. Once he followed I looked at him. "Are you alright? You seemed uneasy after your friend left." I touched his head with my hands. "Your temprature is normal so you can't be sick. If you don't mind me asking, why are you here Thomas?"

I turned and walked as he followed as I waited for him to answer. We past many shops like clothes, vases, and others. I stopped as I pointed to a cave. "That's Crystal Mines. That's where people who works in the mines dig up the gems."

We moved on as I finally reached my father's shop. "Father i'm home." I called as I heard shuffling in the back. A few minutes later an ancient lookimg man walked in as he looked over Thomas with piercing blue eyes.

Thomas bowed to the man. "Hello, sir. You're charming daughter was kind enough to show me your shop. May I take a look around?" The man nodded slowly, his eyes still fixed on Thomas. He felt uneasy, as if her father could see right into his soul. He made a quick tour of the shop, peering into display cases at finely crafted jewelry and polished gems. He couldn't supress it any longer. His memory took over and flashed through his mind. The room distorted; it was no longer the cozy shop, but the front lines of the battle field.

"Your highness, we have to get you out of here!" The prince drew his sword. "No! I will stay and fight!" Thomas grabbed the prince's wrist, "With all due respect, sir, I can't let you do that! I swore to get you out of here." The prince seized Thomas's collard and dragged him forward until their faces were inches apart. His eyes were burning with fire as was the camp arround him. "And I swore to defend my kingdom to the death. Let me not run away on coward's legs, but stand and fight with a brave man's heart!" Thomas looked at him for a long while. A splintering beam crashed to the ground, spraying sparks everywhere. He snapped out of his train of thought.

"Yes, sir." The prince embraced him as a brother and ripped a royal medallion from his own neck, handing it to Thomas. "Tell your superiors 'the hawk flew free.' Give them my medallion. They will know what to do. Go now. RUN!" Thomas flew from the tent, hacking his way through the horde of vampires. He heard the prince screaming in rage as he engaged a few in combat...

His vision dissipated and he found himself collapsed on the shop's floor breathing heavily. Trinity and her father were standing over him, trying to revive him. He stood quickly to regain composure. "I'm fine, I'm fine. No, really. I am," he reassured them.

My father and I was talking in a hush voice. "My dear child you shouldn't have brought him. As time passed I watched as soliders come.and take women as if they have the right. I will not lose you to some solider in a mission." My blue eyes stare that matched his bore into him. My father yield as I smiled. "Father please that's not going to happen. And what makes you sure he is on a mission?"

"You forget I am old my daughter. Over he past centuries I have never seen soliders come here without reason." My father stopped short as ge looked and sas Thomas collaspe. We both went to him and he opened his eyes. "Your not alright. Come and sit." My father commanded as he took the package from me.

My father poored him a class of water and looked into Thomas's eyes. "Tell me boy why you are here? I doubt its just to have a tour and taking advantage of my daughter of her kindness is the last thing you will regret." I gave my father a sharp look but he ignored my stare.

Thomas heaved a sigh and met the old man's gaze. "I see nothing escapes your attention, sir. I have come here with a purpose - not to your shop specifically - but to this town. I come to seek a vampire lord hiding out among our people. He's dangerous, but not yet powerful enough. By the end of the week on Devil's Night, when the moon is full, he will have all of his power and will be able to destroy our army. If this happens, they will take control of this territory and massacre everyone in it. My job is to find him... and kill him."

Thomas handed him the note. When he had finished reading and looked up, he passed the note to his daughter. "Your daughter, Miss Aurora, was kind enough to show me around. I was hoping to get more familiar with my surroundings in order to complete my mission. It's only for today and only to show me around town so I may get my bearings. I promise no harm will come to her, and if you wish, I will gladly compensate her for her time."

He took a deep breath to calm his pounding heart. He felt her gaze on him and clenched his hand into a fist to keep from trembling. He waited for what Mr. Aurora would have to say.

It seemed an eternity before he spoke; he was weighing his options carefully and observing him with his piercing blue gaze. His heart sank. He felt as if the man was going to throw him out of his shop. He pushed the thought aside and forced himself to be optimistic. At last the man spoke.

"My dear boy I have been alive before Crystal Mines ever been settle. I have seen countless wars between the vampires trying to claim these lands." I read the note and gave it back as I looked at Thomas. "Dear Trinity please be a dear and help with his tour around Crystal Miness and no need. Ee have too much money. Trinity don't forget to tell him what you saw."

I watched my father leave as I looked back at Thomas who seemed nervous. "Forgive my father. He's been alive for too long that I am the only family let. He's right when he says he seen it all." I motioned for him to follow me.
