It's official! Derpy now has a canon name...and it's DERPY!!
Our wall-eyed princess is now canon...and she has a voice!

For those of you who have not seen the new episode yet, check out the thread in the Show Discussion Sub-forum.

Needless to say this is causing quite a stir in the brony community, this is quite possibly the best news we've gotten in a long time...now if only they could do the same to Vinyl and Octavia...but I digress.

EQD post
Derpy scene!

And so...by the power vested in me by...nopony in particular...I declare Jan 21st to be...DERPY DAY! Break out the muffins and Bacardi!

Post Le Derpy stuff!

*UPDATE*

As we all know by now, the appearance of Derpy Hooves in the episode was more than a little controversial. People seem to think she is offensive to the mentally disabled. It is quite obvious from the information we have that this was completely unintentional and came as a shock to those who worked on it (including the writer Amy Keating Rogers who's son is mentally disabled and is an advocate for the mentally disabled, who watched the episode and quote "found nothing wrong with it" [sic]). However apparently intent, circumstance and context make no difference. Therefor Hasbro re-dubbed the scene and made some minor alterations to the Itunes release in order to placate those who were offended. Let it be known that they have not, and will not alter reruns of the episode for use by The Hub and the DVD release. Therefor, even though they removed it for Apple, Derpy's canon name is still Derpy.

This thread was supposed to be one of joy, celebration and fun, but this controversy has turned it into a device of division and angst among our own little community, and the fan community at large. This kind of thing is not what MLP or this guild is about, therefor I will be locking this thread.

I do not believe in ignoring this incident, so the will not be deleted and will remain here for those who wish to understand exactly what this whole issue was about.

Now, can we all kindly move on?

I'm a bit put off since they just characterized her as mainstream Western media usually characterizes those differently abled mentally, which is to say offensively. I checked the forums for it and I was not surprised at the people defending the characterization and deriding those who were offended.

The only why I could see that is if you were only going by her voice alone, aside from that it's only shown to be a klutz. Neither of these things say anything about her mental capacity, and even if they did, we'd love her anyway, so quit TRYING to be a stick in the mud.

She's a walking stereotype. They did not have to portray her that way, and it is inconsequential if the fanbase loves her. Southerners loved the portrayal of Uncle Remus in Song of the South but it didn't make the film or his character any less racist.

How? How is she a walking stereotype? You're assuming she is mentally disabled based on your understanding of a stereotype. YOU are the one stereotyping here, not the show.

I cannot say I did not expect that response.

She fits the usual negative media stereotype of those who are differently abled mentally. Your response is akin to saying I was stereotyping for complaining about a black person being portrayed as criminal with a strong love for fried chicken.
