I know what this is about.

"Former Minnesota Senate majority leader Amy Koch has been a vocal opponent of gay marriage, and in 2009, she tried to amend the Minnesota Constitution to add language stipulating that “a marriage between a man and a woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in Minnesota.”"

She's pro-family and Christian and the type of closed-minded bigot I hate. But the kicker is, she cheated on her husband and had an affair with a staff member. xD I really love when people say gay marriage will cheapen straight marriage. Straight people do that themselves. But a gay man wrote an apology letter to her, apologizing that him being gay (and all gay people being gay) for ruining her marriage. I found the letter to be a great read. I'll paste it below.

Dear Ms. Koch,

On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community’s successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage. We are ashamed of ourselves for causing you to have what the media refers to as an “illicit affair” with your staffer, and we also extend our deepest apologies to him and to his wife. These recent events have made it quite clear that our gay and lesbian tactics have gone too far, affecting even the most respectful of our society.

We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love has cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry. And we are doubly remorseful in knowing that many will see this as a form of sexual harassment of a subordinate.

It is now clear to us that if we were not so self-focused and myopic, we would have been able to see that the time you wasted diligently writing legislation that would forever seal the definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman, could have been more usefully spent reshaping the legal definition of “adultery.”

Forgive us. As you know, we are not church-going people, so we are unable to fully appreciate that “gay marriage” is incompatible with Christian values, despite the fact that those values carry a biblical tradition of adultery such as yours. We applaud you for keeping that tradition going.

And finally, shame on us for thinking that marriage is a private affair, and that our marriage would have little impact on anyone’s family. We now see that marriage is more than that. It is an agreement with society. We should listen to the Minnesota Family Council when it tells us that marriage is about being public, which explains why marriages are public ceremonies. Never did we realize that it is exactly because of this societal agreement that the entire world is looking at you in shame and disappointment instead of minding its own business.

From the bottom of our hearts, we ask that you please accept our apology.

Thank you.

Straight people do that themselves

I think that's out of line on the fact that it attacks Straights for cheating while ignoring the fact that some LGBT people can and do cheat on their partners- making it a bigoted and biased statement against Straights.

It also ignores that Bi's can be in hetero-relationships and can contribute to the "Straights Cheat" numbers even without being straight.

Making blanket statements about a group based on their orientation isn't very ethical for someone who dislikes bigots.

She didn't say that all straight people cheat. She basically said that there are some straight people that gripe and complain that gay marriage will degrade straight marriage, yet some of those same people cheat on their spouses, thus degrading it themselves and breaking their supposed 'holy bond.'

Let's reword it then and see how you feel "Gays do that all on their own". There is no qualifier like "some", or "a few" it is simply "straights" or in my sentence "gays".

Ya, it was pretty bigoted.

She said " I really love when people say gay marriage will cheapen straight marriage. Straight people do that themselves."

If someone came in here and said "I really hate it when gays try and get married- gays cheat on their partners." It's the same kind of broad brush that ignores the fact that individual couples Do Not represent whole groups, so it's not ok to treat gays as a threat to marriage any more than it's ok to treat straights as people who degrade marriage.

Hm... maybe I misinterpreted it myself, or read what she said and decided to decipher it in the way that pleased me (no sarcasm). If so, my bad, but what I did was, instead of taking her words for face value, I sifted through the metaphorical cr*p to try and find what I thought she was really trying to say.

That's the thing with words that are read, not spoken; not everyone interprets them the same way sweatdrop . I have my interpretation, you and Blackrose have yours.

But interpretations- what we think, doesn't erase the bigotry in the words. Changing the words will. Apologizing to the Straight people she spoke about would help- but when people say bigoted things- pretending it didn't happen isn't going to fix how it effects others.

Which is why one must be extra super careful to be clear when there is no intonation and non verbal cues.

Again, it's only a bigoted statement if you interpret it to be so. I thought she was speaking about the straight people that cheat, and you think she was speaking about all straight people. Different people have had different experiences, and may have different opinions about certain events. What's important is that Kayura herself knows what she meant, and, if anything, explain what she meant, not necessarily apologize for someone else's way of thinking.
