Ice like swords hanging from high branches threateningly. The man had made it to the clearing without a single foot print in his path. Only the small prints of the woman soon turning to paw prints rested in the snow.
Just like last time...
Caine arrived at the scene too late. The woman dressed in the soft blue kimono stood with the silver blade piercing her stomach and had he still had a heart it would have throbbed in pain. The vampire towering over the small figure as her claws disappeared leaving her to look human accept for the large brown eyes.
With a flick of Caine's eyes the vampire dispered in crimson dust that shimmered under the moonlight. Caine walked with slow stride to the werewolf woman, in time to catch her as she began to fall. His cold eyes met her changing ones. The brown fading to purple. Her shaking hands were wrapped around the sizzling blade and Caine took hold of the handle before pulling it out. She reacted by coughing blood upon his face. Her hands grasping his crisp white shirt as a small twinge of a smile came to her face.
Caine could hear familiar footsteps and knew what would happen. As her hands loosened on his jacket he slowly lowered her to the ground. Where the pure snow and her winter kimono began to be tinted with crimson.

I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only sounds that broke the falling snow was the sound of his pounding feet and his fast beating heart. They had been betrayed. The vampire clan they thought they had been allies with had sold them out to a group of rouge Slayers. Though, he supposed they should have seen this coming. Most of the pack had already fled and were getting picked off one by one. But, his fiance Emma was still out there. He was tracking her scent through the woods when it slowly began getting lost under the smell of blood.
No... Please, no! he thought. Emma was the only wolf in the pack that loved him for who he was rather than thinking him a disappointment. If he lost her, he didn't know what he would do. The smells got stronger has he neared a clearing. He shifted back into human form and charged in, bursting through the brush in a shower of snow and ice crystals. “Emma!” he called.
The first thing he saw was Emma laying in the snow with blood all around her. She stretched out a bloody hand towards him, lips moving as they tried to form words. "Aru... It's not..." the sound of her rasping breath made him dart forward a few feet closer until he was brought up short by the sight of another figure in the clearing.
It was Caine. A million questions formed in his mind. Why was he here? Why wasn't he trying to help Emma? Where had he been these three years? Why were the vampires betraying his pack? A nasty coughing fit from Emma pushed these thoughts to the side. He ran the the woman's side and knelt in the snow next to her. She again tried to speak but he hushed her. "Shhhhh. Don't try to speak Emma." He poured healing power into her wound only to feel the burn of silver running though her veins.
Despite his best efforts he felt her heart falter. Stay with me! Please! he looked deep in her eyes as she mouthed "I love you..." and then drew a last shuddering breath. The world felt like it was spinning. He looked up at Caine and that was when he saw the blood on his shirt and the blade in his hands.
This man, who had first believed in him, who had taught him to fight, who had been his secret lover for years before he had even known Emma... THIS was the man who had killed his fiance? No, it couldn't be, could it? "Caine... what happened here?" Tears formed in his eyes as he spoke. He gripped Emma's body like his last lifeline and looked up at the vampire like his last hope.
Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, And other poison devils. XXXXXXXXXX Caine didn't look at Aru as he came into the clearing. His eyes remained down cast and emotionless on the werewolf woman who stretched a hand to his once lover. Caine had a flare of hatred for the dying woman. His cold existence remembered, but when he saw Aru and the way he held the woman the hatred was buried by sorrow and yet at the same time a twinge of happiness. For a dead creature he was feeling a lot of emotion.
Three years....It had been three years and Caine had to watch Aru go through pain once more. The girl's heart beats were fading and Caine knew that she was dead. Aru wouldn't be able to heal her. The amount of silver, the area she'd been stabbed, the silver was already running to her heart. Aru would lose her, just as Caine had lost Aru...
Aru looked up at Caine and he did the only thing he could do. He gave Aru an enemy, someone to blame. He reached up with his white gloved hand and wiped the blood from his face with a cold and almost disgusted look. "Isn't it obvious...adolescent pup." After the words left his lips he took off the stained glove and tossed it in front of Aru.
If he had a heart, it would have broken. He was an expert at breaking his own heart. But he couldn't comfort Aru any other way. All he could do was give Aru someone to be furious at. Caine couldn't sell out his clan members and he couldn't bring himself to comfort his old lover. It would be better this way, so he'd give Aru someone to take his anger out on.
I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aru watched as Caine wiped the blood off his face with a disgusted look in his eyes. The spoken words cut like the silver blade in his former lovers hands. Caine was calling him a puppy, making fun of the fact that his wolf form was stuck in the adolescent stage. Nothing made sense anymore. His world grew cold and his grip slacked on Emma's body.
But it was the sight of Caine's blood covered glove flying in his direction that was the proverbial last straw. He set Emma back down on the snow and covered his ears. "No..." he whispered shaking his head. Something shattered in the back of Aru's mind and the white scene tinted red. He released an agonized howl as pain wracked his body and it began to shift violently. His arms and legs gained golden fur and claws while his muscles doubled in strength. Transformation complete, he stood and glared at Cain with glowing golden eyes where green should have been.
Under the Wolf's Rage, Aru felt his soul dieing, piece by piece. He knew what was happening but truth was he didn't care anymore. The Wolf would avenge his mate, but afterwards nothing would be left for Aru. His world was forever incomplete now...
Aru growled and launched himself at Caine. He struck out with one claw after another intending to tear his enemy to pieces. He was faster and stronger in this form, but transforming for the first time left his energy drained. He had to end this quickly or the damnable vampire would get away with murder.

Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, And other poison devils. XXXXXXXXXX Aru’s pained expression was tearing Caine apart. He watched as his most precious person broke. He could hear the rushing of the werewolf’s blood and the pounding of his heart. The signs of rage. Caine knew them well, he’d faced many werewolves in his life time. He’d been allies with them as well. He knew what was happening and had an idea of what would come from it.
Aru lounged forward and Caine brought the silver blade coated in Emma’s blood up to block the attack. With the force of a few attacks the blade went flying out of his hand. It wasn’t like Caine couldn’t have held onto the blade, but he had no intention of using such a thing against Aru. Even if he held back that blade would have a high chance of killing him anyway. So he let it go.
Dodging to the side he felt only the smallest sensation to tell him he’d been hit. His sleeve torn and a thick dark liquid slowly seeping out. Caine had a quick moment to pull free his black sword and block another set of attacks. Instead of being pure silver the blade edge was lined with it. He blocked another of the furious swings and his memory flashed to the first time he’d met Aru.
A soft smile curled his expression as he began to fight back with Aru. It was just like the first time, at least Caine could pretend it was. He wanted Aru to be angry, to show him how he could fight. Aru had always been looked down on due to his smaller form. Caine however believed that anyone could fight and no one was truly too weak. It was only those who chose to be weak that were. Aru had shown Caine that he could fight the first time they’d met. Caine would now see how much he’d improved.
They moved swiftly around the clearing and then Caine got an idea. His odd smile and intrigued eyes may have seemed cruelly amused to those who couldn’t know what he was thinking. Caine perried an attack and slashed back before taking the fight into the woods.

I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Golden eyes glowed as the two danced across the frost bitten wilderness. Caine was good. The best Aru had ever known. His logical mind watched as the Wolf made strike after strike that was swatted away by the vampire. The Wolf was thrilled when he scored a hit to Caine's shoulder.
Power shimmered throught the air. Aru's healing abilities turned themselves loose on Caine, but instead of helping it made the blood flow faster. The scent of blood sent the Wolf into faster attacks, but Caine continued to block every attack. The pure confidence in the movements reminded Aru of when he had first met. When his pack had first courted the aliance of the vampires, Aru had been young. Back then, he had been even smaller and slight.
Back then, his name had been used in the same context as useless. Eat your meal, you don't want to be like Aru. The pack alpha had laughed and said, "If you can make Aru useful, we'll be your alies." Aru remembered the laughter from both sides. His uselessness had been legendary apparently. But there had been one person not laughing.
Back in the present, Caine had changed directions and headed into the forest. The Wolf howled and chased after him. The two of them bounded through the woods dodging tree limbs and striking at each other every other movement. Aru was starting to feel the burn of the silver plating on Caine's sword. The wild swings left him open to the blade, and he was gaining more and more minor wounds on his arms and sides.
The Wolf decided a change of tactics was needed. With a powerful leap, Aru was flying into the upper branches of a tree. He jumped from branch to branch until he was behind and above Caine. "The last place most people look for an incoming attack is above. It's an advantage you can exploit. You're fast, so use that." Funny how Caine's teachings were what was keeping Aru alive now.
Aru buried himself deeper under the Rage. He didn't want to watch this macabre scene, but there was no escape from the memories...
Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, And other poison devils. XXXXXXXXXX 'Everyone can fight. Absolutely everyone is useful, if they make themselves so.' Caine's mind was playing in the past. Out on the balcony of the truce castle. Where the weres and the vampires had all joined together for a party. They were just starting the truce back then. Aru had been very young at that time. He was small and his pack saw him as useless. Caine on the other hand was the leader of the clan. He was one of the strongest vampires. And as such he'd been presented a challenge. To make this -useless child- useful.
Caine had initiated the battle back then too. In a similar fashion. He'd bumped into the boy spilling wine on him and making a comment about his size. Then they'd gone outside onto the large balcony and begun fighting. It was only when Caine felt the wolf had proved himself that Caine stopped the fight and bowed to the slightly beat up wolf. That had been the beginning of everything. Including the beginning of Caine's love for the young man.
Back in the present, Caine was still doing all he could. He was dodging and attacking, yet he was avoiding the fatal points. Only causing scratches and small gashes. Nothing that would kill Aru. Not with Aru's resistance to silver unless it was in his blood stream or in a fatal area. Caine knew much about the werewolf and was using that knowledge.
He lost sight of Aru for a brief moment. Then suddenly the wolf was pouncing towards him from above and behind. The irony brought a smirk to Caine's lips once more. He dodged falling to the ground before suddenly rolling out of the way and slashing Aru's arm in passing. Caine began weaving the way back towards the clearing. He was getting tired, the smell of the wolf's blood was making his head throb, and his lungs burn. All the while his wounds were pouring out blood.
I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aru cringed inside as the missed attack caused his right arm to be buried in the frozen ground and sprayed snow into his face. The Wolf snarled, bringing the free arm up to guard only to feel the bite of Caine's sword. The strike was non-vital. All his wounds were that way. Was Caine toying with him?
"Everyone can fight."
Aru pulled his right arm from the frozen dirt, not caring about the pain as ice scraped his forearm. The howl he let loose carried a strangely human note. The Rage was fading. The line between Aru and The Wolf was no longer distinct. Aru looked up in time to see the retreating form of Caine head towards the clearing.
"Absolutely everyone is useful, if they make themselves so."
"I don't like fighting. Maybe it's because of my healing powers, but... I mean... I'll fight if I must to protect myself and the things I care about... but I'm never going to like it. " Aru heard his own voice speak out of his memories. In his minds eye he saw his younger self leaning on Caine's balcony staring out at the full moon. Down below, the sounds of the Hunt were in full swing. Aru's memory supplied the image of Caine walking onto the balcony with an amused and indulgent smirk on his face. No hate or disdain showed on the vampires face.
Aru swiped the memory with a clawed hand as if he could physically tear the image in two. What did it matter if Caine had showed that face to him in the past?! Caine had walked out of his life three years ago! Since then there had been nothing but rumors and dirty looks, with Emma as his only friend. When that friendship had turned into love he didn't know, but deep down there was always a part of him that refused to let go of Caine.
As he moved to chase the retreating figure once more, Aru became painfully aware of how low his energy reserves were. The wounds he had sustained were slow to heal and his limbs felt like they were filled with lead. But as bad as he felt, Aru knew Caine wasn't faring much better. He followed the ever increasing trail of dark blood back to where this tragedy had begun.
His still golden eyes took in the scene once more. Aru paused breifly at the edge to gather his flagging energy for one last assault. There was only one thought on his mind right now. This would be the last strike. One of them was not leaving here alive.
Please.... Forgive me...
And with that, Aru charged toward Caine one last time.

Safe from pain, and truth, and choice, And other poison devils. XXXXXXXXXXCaine was far from well. His body was running on what little reserves he had. His clothes were soaked with his own blood and the splashes of Aru's. He could hear the heavy breathing of Aru and knew that this fight would soon come to an end. It would all be over soon. Caine took some peace in this knowledge. Knowing that Aru would finally get closure. Knowing that he, himself would finally be done with all of this. Finally he wouldn't have to hurt his beloved anymore.
His mind flickered back once more. He saw Aru leaning against the rail of the balcony and wrapped his arms around him leaning his chin on his shoulder. "Don't change. Whatever you do, don't ever change for anyone." Caine's voice had been so gentle and warm at that time. "I love you for who are and would throw this all away for you." But that had been before Caine realized. Aru could never be his. Aru was a werewolf, his blood wouldn't take to the vampire curse and as such Caine would live to watch him die. Caine realized this couldn't be. Even now Caine could return his resolve by remembering this.
The memories pushed Caine forward into the clearing. He made it there and then whirled around with his sword out as Aru came into the clearing as well. It appeared he had all the intention of continuing. Of attacking and finishing this. Aru lunged forward and Caine swung...dropping the sword to the snow as Aru's claws went straight into his flesh. Caine coughed up black blood and leaned forward towards Aru. His hand extended lightly to touch the soft fur of his past lover before he fell to one knee and began laughing. It was a faint sound raspy and harsh. He looked up and if he were not a vampire he would have had tears in his eyes. Instead dark blood ran like tears down his cheeks.
He opened his mouth to speak and lurched forward placing a hand on the snow to keep himself up. His once bright eyes were now dull and almost black. Yet he was hanging on still and looked up to Aru with a soft smile. "I-I'm sorry...." He had to pause and grit his teeth. "I'm so sorry...I just...I...wanted you to be happy....you couldn't have been.....not...not with...me." The words left his lips and his hand tightened into a fist before he began to fall. He tried to stop himself and only managed to turn himself so he fell on his back looking up at Aru with a pained expression.
"I love you."

I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Whatever you do, don't change for anyone."
As Aru made what he was sure would be his final, suicidal charge, his mind played back that happier time on Caine's balcony. He heard the voice, soft and warm and just for him. He never thought, in all his years, that the owner of that voice would be the one to kill him.
"I love you for who are and would throw this all away for you."
Reality snapped back into place just as Caine released his grip on his sword. Too late, Aru tried to pull back the strike. Unable to stop his forward momentum his claws landed a direct hit. Caine coughed, then reached up to pet his cheek before collapsing. The look in the vampires eyes was just as Aru remembered. Pain wracked Aru as the Rage disappeared and he was left in the broken human form.
Caine's raspy laughter reached his ears, but it was the black tears that made Aru stumble into action. He knelt next to Caine and tried to stop the flow of blood. His powers failed to respond, too busy keeping Aru from death to devote any energy for Caine. Regret flooded him bringing tears to his eyes. He listened to Caine speaking his last words and Aru found himself unable to respond with anything but tears and frantic attempts to heal.
"I love you."
Aru's breath caught as Caine's eyes closed and he went completely limp. Aru suddenly felt very small and painfully alone as he held on to the empty shell of his lover. He looked up to the sky just as it began snowing again. How fitting... The heavens are crying frozen tears... He knew that his dark thoughts were partially the cold and blood loss, but he didn't care.
Deciding that the least he could do was give his lovers a proper burial, Aru started digging. The frozen ground tore up his hands and took all the feeling from his fingers, but he paid that no mind. When the two bodies were safe in the ground, Aru found two large rocks and placed them like grave markers. The smears of blood on the stones seemed oddly appropriate.
With the job done, Aru curled up next to the stones and watched his breath turn into steam. He wasn't sure if anyone would come to find him. After all, the two people who cared about him the most were in the ground beneath him. So Aru simply closed his eyes and hoped that Fate would be on his side for once, and put an end to it all. He knew it was a lot to hope for. Fate, as he well knew, was a fickle thing.
 Momo Nel Dolce So what if it's only 1 o'clock in the afternoon? It's never too soon to send out all the invatations to the last night...[[Of Your Life]] The clinic was running a bit slow that day, so Momo had let Rika go out to the market and to gather herbs while she watched the place. There was only one other patient and he left after getting bandaged up. Then again with two girls running the clinic it was no surprise there weren't many people there. Momo was getting bored so she had started cleaning the place from top to bottom. It was the least she could do for Rika. If nothing else the few people they treated couldn't say anything bad about the place.
Momo had been in the back for about ten minutes when she heard the door open in the front. She could tell by the foot steps it was Rika. But, they were heavy as if burdened with something and then there was a dragging noise. When Momo came out she was met with a most unpleasant sight. A young man with blond hair was covered in blood and wounds. Lying on one of the cots as Rika looked up. She was out of breath a little smeared with the blood. "WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?!" Momo protested and went running over to check on her darling Rika. Seeing that she wasn't wounded she listened to the explanation. "Well he was hurt and I found him in the forest in a pile of snow. I couldn't just leave him there."
Momo was practically steaming. "So you just brought him here! What if he's a demon? I can't believe how careless you were. What would I do if you had gotten hurt? Do you know how dangerous this is?" Rika was a soft hearted woman. Much too kind for her own good. Momo loved her because of it, but it caused her great distress as well. "But, we're doctors. We have to help him."
There wasn't really anyway around it. Momo sighed and shook her head. "Well hurry up and get the herbal creams. I can't bandage him up without it." Rika smiled brightly and ruffled Momo's hair. She was a short s**t, and she knew she looked like a child. It annoyed her, but Rika loved it. Momo couldn't really do anything about it, so she had an attitude to make up for it. As Rika left Momo began taking off the mans shirt and cleaning him up. Once the blood was washed off she could see how fast he was healing. It was quick, but not quick enough. Though Momo felt a little sick to her stomach. There was something odd about this guy, almost like she could smell it. But, like Rika said. She was a doctor so she had to fix him up. [[It's Electrifying]] ...Wind me up and watch me go! Where she stops, nobody knows! A good excuse to be a bad influence on you! Where: Clinic.Who: Rika!
I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thing that registered to Aru was the fact that he was warm. For a moment, he wondered if he had gone to hell. The reality wasn't much better as someone poked the nasty wound on his forearm and the smell of herbs assaulted his senses. His automatic jerk was weak, but served to prove that he was indeed still among the living.
He forced his heavy eyes to open if only to face his attackers. What he saw was not some hardened Slayer come to finish him but two blood smeared young women. The "attack" had come from the woman holding his arm applying some sort of cream to it. The numbness from most of his other wounds told him these two had been hard at work until now. He relaxed and let his head loll to the side.
He was still so tired, but he couldn't just go back to sleep yet. As awareness got momentarily stronger his senses told him these two were human. He knew his pack had been dangerously close to one of the major human cites, but he didn't think a human would take in a stranger with no precautions. Humans liked to shoot first and ask questions later.
These two were obviously healers, as the woman holding his arm efficiently wrapped bandages as she finished with the cream. Aru worked his mouth forming soundless words until finally he could speak. "Wh...Where.....am I?"

 Momo Nel Dolce So what if it's only 1 o'clock in the afternoon? It's never too soon to send out all the invatations to the last night...[[Of Your Life]] It was a good thing Rika had just stocked up on the herbs. They were using a lot of the cream on this guy. He was soo cut up it was ridiculous that he was still alive. Then again the more Momo worked on him the worse the smell started to get to her. She actually had to pull away for a minute and let Rika work. Taking a few deep breaths she was able to get back to work. Momo only had a little more work to do anyway. So she could survive through this, and not get sick.
She didn't know what it was, but occasionally she met people like this. It wasn't that they smelled bad, just overwhelming. It was like a thick musk around them that just kinda smothered her. She often times had to take a moment to gather her breath. She wondered if it was just the people from villages in the forest. Maybe she was allergic to something out there? She couldn't be sure, but there was nothing she could really do about it.
When she was almost done and only had an arm to bandage he jerked. She acted instinctively and snatched his wrist to keep him from bending his arm and reopening the wounds. Her grip was firm but gentle at the same time. She waited a moment so she could watch him. When he didn't jerk again she started wrapping it before he could jerk again. He opened his eyes and tried to speak. Momo didn't say anything at first, she was focussed on finishing what she was doing. Once the bandage was secured she leaned over him and took the wash cloth off his forehead.
"Safe. This is a clinic in Castle City." She stated simply and refreshed the cool water on the rag. "No more questions. You need to rest." She spoke firmly, sounding more her age then she looked. Placing the rag back on his head she smoothed his hair gently. "You're safe here." She assured him and her eyes softened. No matter who he was or what he was, Momo was kind to patients. When she was in doctor mode she was a different person. [[It's Electrifying]] ...Wind me up and watch me go! Where she stops, nobody knows! A good excuse to be a bad influence on you! I keep holding on to you But I can't bring you back to life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aru didn't get an answer to his question right away. Like any good healer, the woman's first priority was to finish securing the bandage. It was only after she had taken the cloth of his head that she answered him. Safe, she'd said. A werewolf safe in the middle of THE major human settlement in the region? Was that even possible?
She was being unbelievably nice to him. She spoke with authority, but as she replaced the cool rag she smoothed his hair with a gentle touch he hadn't known much in his life. In fact, the only two people with that kind of gentleness toward him were buried in a cold clearing. He looked the woman in the eye, grief shining in his gaze. "You're too kind." he spoke before he let his eyes fall closed and succumbed to sleep again.
When he woke again he was alone, but he felt infinitely more healed. Whatever those herbs had been, they worked well with his healing powers. He slowly tested his limbs to see how well they moved. He was stiff, but it shouldn't be too much hassle to get out of the city. And do what... Aru thought. He had nowhere to go. His family probably thought he was dead and didn't really care either way anyway. Hell, they were probably glad he was gone. All he had left was right here and now.
Aru pushed himself into a seated position and waited to see if there was any lightheadedness. His stiff and still healing muscles protested but his head was clear. He ignored the slight pain for the time being. He wanted to thank the women for taking care of him. He may be a worthless runt who did more damage than good sometimes, but he was not ungrateful.
Standing up was a rather simple process, but walking proved to be a bit more difficult. He stumbled to the door of the room and leaned against the frame. Using the wood to keep him steady he looked around to see if he could find any sign of the women healers.
