Legend of Lunaria Captain
|

While not too deep, the Great Lake is home to many dangerous creatures, including the Kappa who patrol it for Lunarians to eat.
The wind whistled through the North as though on a rampage, sweeping through the surrounding forest and capturing the sounds of the waves that rippled across the black waters of the lake. Hardly anyone dares to return here anymore, not after the rumours of the creatures that lie in wait - both human and animal alike - as well as the over abundance of spirits that can be found here. Experienced Priests will be able to discern the voices of the deceased, but lesser Soul Conduits and Academy Students will find it difficult to control the feelings of the dead as they waver in and out of their minds.
It is a burial ground - one that has not been sanctified. There have been too many deaths here, and not many trust the priestess that lives within the walls of the Shinmei Temple in the center of the lake. The lives of those who have passed on have not been put to rest as they should, and so roam through the wind and shadows like dust, unseen by almost all, even the Priests.
There is the sound of bells - or is it laughter?
Today there is a red sun lowering in the sky, casting streaks of orange, violet, and gold across the black waters, which are rippling ominously. They create a sharp contrast to the darkness of the forest.
Where does one go for safety in this graveyard?

The first to arrive is not someone to be trifled with.
"MIZUKI!"
Stalking up towards the edge of the black lake stands Boray, the man who led those that were in the Rice Paddies up towards the North. His expression is clearly unpleasant, face contorted with anger - though at whom?
"MIZUKI!"
The yell is cast again, but this time it rings alongside of the sound of slowly gaining footsteps. Boray spins around, looking to see who is coming, other than the ones he has brought -
A look of great loathing crosses his face as he catches sight of the dark haired woman from Main Street.
"You."

[ OOC: Right now you are arriving at the edge of the Great Lake in the Ancient North. You can clearly see the Shinmei Shrine, but you cannot get to it, as there are waters on three sides of it, and the only bridge that leads to it is blocked by Boray.
Soul Conduits, read the prompt carefully - you cannot see the spirits, but you can definitely feel them. Academy Students intending on becoming Soul Conduits, it is confusing and the air feels thick with the spirits; your clarity is much lower than the more experienced. Anyone who is not a Soul Conduit or Priest cannot hear or see the spirits. You feel the air is tense, but other than that, nothing.
To Everyone: Be wary of what you say and who you say it too...who can you trust and who can you not?

Kiran followed after the woman, heading for the North, without question. It didn't seem likely that Soray would give them much more information even if he did ask questions, but they might still learn something if they continued to follow her. As they walked to their next destination, Kiran's gaze scanned their surroundings, and his ear fins strained for any noise made outside their group.
A wariness washed over him as they moved farther north, entering an area that he wouldn't have dared to go alone. Kiran's eyes darted toward the woman leading them. Who exactly was this woman? What did she planned to do if she found the man that she was looking for? What were they all walking into by helping this woman? The questions swam in his mind, but he didn't bother to voice them. Anything the woman told them could be a lie. Soray hadn't given them much reason to put their trust in her. But he had already come this far and saw no reason to back out now.
He picked up a distant noise, and it wasn't until they arrived that he realized the noise had been a man's shouts. From the expression that he sent to Soray, he didn't look happy to see her. The tension in the air around them set him on edge. Kiran's hands gripped the handles of his tonfas tucked behind his back, ready in case things turned into a fight. He turned his gaze once again to Soray, trying to gauge her reaction to the man's presence.

Sarangerel had heard the stories of the Great Lake and the Shinmei Shrine. About the Kappa who paroled the waters and of the mysterious character known as Mizuki. Yet she never expect to see it with her own pale green eyes.
She first heard about when when she started the Academy, when she was still young and naive to the horrors of this world. In truth did not know if she should fear the woman or feel sorry for her. It is said that her connection to the spirits had drove her insane, made it impossible for her to live a normal life along people. Many feared her and the great power this connection gave her, so much so she never had to pick a side to fight for - nobody wanted to be her enemy. She looked to the side, a sad look in those ghostly orbs of hers, it seemed the only way to be truly free was through power.
Goosebumps started to run down the arms of the teal haired conduit, she could already feel a force unlike anything she had known. Would she one day end up in a place like this? Her mind twisted to the point that the only company she could hope for were ghosts and monsters. It could happen, her connection was constantly getting stronger as well as her power. She heard the spirits now clearer than she ever did. It was a thought that made her heart skip a beat, she had suffered loneliness and rejection once. She did not know if she could handle going through it again, not know she had discovered the joys of love and friendship.
Dabbling in the world of the dead was not something to be taken lightly, even though she had been in contact with the spirits since a young age it did not mean it was safe. As you got stronger and opened doors which were usually beyond the reach of your fellow man you risked many things. Your mind, your body and your very soul. Sara had already seen the powers the spirits held, their ability to take control of a body and cause physical anguish.
The closer she got to this place the more unsettled she felt, it was cold, cold enough to make her hold her arms and shiver. The air was thick and even though the weather was not that harsh she felt like she was walking through three foot of snow and ice. She had never felt a spiritual density quite like it, not in all of her years of training. She bit her lip, unable to keep her discomfort from showing on her face.
No wonder not many people came here, even the fighters must realise something was wrong. That this place was unlike any other to be found in Lunaria. Surly they must...
Mizuki
The name sent shivers down her spine, why had they come here? She did not understand why. She looked back at the others in their group, holding a hand up to her chest and clenching it in a fist over her heart, over the scar that was left behind from her attempted assassination. Something did not add up here. She brought her other hand to join it, her long fingers wrapping around her clenched first and her white cape flapping in the breeze as well as a few strands of teal hair.
You
Sara's eyes snapped open, the chill in the air suddenly getting so much colder, she could hear them, all of them, the joined voices of the spirits mixed together to become totally muffled and beyond understanding. It was more of a noise than anything else, a nose that made her ear fins feel like they were bleeding. Clearly the tension that suddenly grew had startled them. Yet she could not understand what they were feeling, or what they were even saying. It was just chaos, even in the realm of the dead had been disturbed by today's events. Like a ripple crossing between worlds,
She could feel a lump in her throat, her hearts rhythm picking up speed like a drum. Something was wrong. Her own soul told her that much. Yet she remained quite, all she could do was look on and pray. A great shadow had covered the land today, she just hoped that the light would reveal itself sooner than later.
She did not know how much more darkness they could endure.

Was that the far-off sound of bells, in the air?
The woman who had isolated herself, guarded by the legion and allied to none, shifted where she sat with her legs folded under her. She tilted her head slightly, hair sliding off her shoulder and down her back in smooth motions, as if craning her head to hear a voice. She nodded, her lips moving gently, and then opened her eyes. "Where might the bells be? The lovely ringing, a sweetness of sound," Mizuki wondered to herself, stirring in the half-light and rising slowly, much as the incense smoke rose and curled to the ceiling within her shrine.
It was so distant, but she felt that she might part the spirits, might go outside to see what this was. Outside where the light curved around her, where the thickness of spirit made life undecipherable from death. Except to Mizuki, who saw the division clear, whose eyes might linger in darkness but saw light still.
So she did, she wound through the shrine, opened the doors and did not flinch as the sky came into view, but stood there without speaking for a heartbeat too long. She smiled, slowly, faintly, and whispered, "Ah, no bells, then-- just your voices, O wandering souls. I do love bells, their chiming, but another day."
Mizuki folded her hands into her sleeves, laughing as she realized it had been Shinta, Tenjou and then Hua who had come to see her. Her laughter chimed out much like bells itself, and she looked surprised for a moment, before reaching up one hand and placing it gently across her mouth. Perhaps that was the pretty sound she thought she had heard. Bells, everywhere-- forgetting that her voice chimed, that it rang with life while it spoke to the dead.
Lost in her own dreams, for a moment, Mizuki forgot that she was outside. She took one more step towards the bridge, as if thinking of approaching Shinta. Her eyes swept across the bystanders, focusing briefly it seemed on Kiran and Sara though, of course, she could not possibly know them by name.
Louder, somehow, so that her voice swept across and over everyone, without having raised it in volume at all, Mizuki began: "Are you looking for the bird's shadow? That phoenix who sang to me, once-- or perhaps it is the tortoise shell, a lyre for sweet music that you seek." She smiled, in a curious way, her eyes distant. "No, no, of course it is the way to paradise?"
She closed her eyes, folded her hands inside her robe again. "Shinta, do you have a trifle, a trouble? What makes you yell, so that I think your voice is bells, and am disappointed?"
Of course, she knew what he was here for. How could she not? But she thought perhaps there was time for a game, just a little one. Perhaps.

Prey venturing into predator territory. This is what Kotone gradually began feeling like as the trek north to the destination there proceeded. However, part of her awareness of this feeling of hers was pulled away to focus on unfolding proceedings. Boray had been calling out. But, Kotone couldn't wonder long on who or what he was yelling at since her attention then shifted with the scene to him addressing someone with what appeared to be an even angrier look than before, an elegant-looking lady. Kotone's odd mind procured a memory from a couple of years ago of being reassured that two individuals who she happened to witness that were fighting are actually very close. Was this also a similar case? That the angrier Boray seemed to someone might mean he gets along better with the individual than others? Or was it that he was really in bad terms with this person? Again, Kotone was constantly finding her senses pulled from left to right and everywhere today and in commonly less than a moment's notice. When her sight landed on a man gripping the handles of his weapon, she felt her body brace itself further in its persistent resistance to trembling as her recklessness and diffidence waged a war of their own within her. She willed herself not to let her gaze linger on any one individual for long at this time. Who she saw next was a lady with her hands over her heart and then her eyes moved to a formidable-looking man. And finally, Kotone saw a lady replied to Boray's yells. Kotone's tense form where she stood did not waver as she continued to watch and listen silently. The lady's puzzle-like words, Shinta being Boray's real name or other name, Kotone took in all she could with the intention of remembering well. Was she going numb? A small part of her wondered this as she continued to witness what was taking place. From the get-go, this day and these times of the recent months as of late have been filled with triggers assaulting her mind and this little part of her was taking notice of her strained lull in outward reactions at the moment.

Maddening.
There was no other word that could describe the eerie silence that had followed the small band of Lunarians warily trailing after Shen. With lust of vengeance driving him Cais was sped along, though with some trepidation he remained quite a few strides back from their new found "leader". Clenching his fists tightly he fought the rising tide of anger, trying to keep from losing what little self control he was clinging to. With each step towards their destination the air of tension seemed to grow thicker, setting the young fighter further on edge.
As the group crossed the threshold of the Great Lake, Cais felt the air go frigid. While he stifled a chill he gazed out over the lake with curious eyes. Through his entire life he had never gotten so close to the Lake, especially not within any real distance of Shinmei Shrine. Too many tales heard as a child had instilled a wariness that even now could not be broken. Tales of monsters in the darkness and the strange woman who lived among them.
That same curious gaze immediately moved to Shen as they moved closer. What purpose would they have here?
"MIZUKI!"
Cais blinked and crossed his arms as the yell carried through the cold air and towards the shrine. He's looking for the priestess? He thought, looking past the formidable looking Lunarian and towards the entrance to the shrine. On the bridge stood a Lunarian, though from the distance Cais couldn't make out who or the look of his face. Blinking again, he finally noticed that others were already around and he heard the same call again.
"MIZUKI!"
His brows furrowed. Everything that had happened, did it have something to do with her? Or did she just know what had taken place and who had done it? Cais opened his mouth to speak but was silenced at the sight of the shrine as a woman appeared from its entrance. Cais felt the heat rising within him again felt his hands brush against his weapons before he pulled them back. There was no fury in her, no anger, in fact there was nothing he could read from her, despite the rising emotion of the three Lunarians who seemed to have led the others here.
"Nothing good is going to come from this." He muttered to his his nearest companions in a hollow voice. Adrenaline pulsing through him he remained still lest his first action be one of hostile intentions. Not here.
Not yet.

Eiji trailed along the group that ventured from Main Street. The searched turned up unfruitful but was it really meant to give positive results? He had began to wonder if the search was just a kill for time. No matter what the reason was now they are all in the North, and it seemed they were not alone. Other lunarians gathered here as well. Did they all have the same role to play? Were they all looking for the same individual? Different ones? It felt more like each came for their own reasons. Each group seemed to have a "leader" that they chose to follow. Then again he could not really assume their relationships with one another not having been with them; but it didn't stop him from wondering their stories, especially the one blocking the bridge. Eiji probably should have paid attention more; something he rarely did to a fault. He had no idea what this place was, having one, never been here before and two, a horrible memory. All he knew was that it was not a welcoming place. Just looking around put him at great unease. He was more intrigued by his surroundings then the actual situation. After catching up to the group he could not help but watch the lake, the colors catching his eye. It's as if the very presence of the lake itself was weighing upon his shoulders. He could not put his finger on what exactly was bothering him but the fact how it just was. The reasoning was irrelevant, either way he was not comfortable. "How welcoming..." he commented snidely, to no one in particular. "Not anymore welcoming then this place I guess..." he added, again, to no one, as he scanned the area before he turned to the man that broke the silence. The quiet surrounding was one thing but when the man spoke it was as if ice shattered, or at least to his rather creative imagination. Both Kiran and Sara seemed alarmed by this man, and rightfully so, but it seemed the women who stood across the bridge knew him as well. It was around then did Eiji start to really grow tense, though no where near as panicked as Sara seemed to be expressing. The air felt more thick after the appearance of the woman. Sumu's fur stood on ends; every now and then letting out a low moan. He was not happy being in this place. He did not wish to remain here. Eiji tried to comfort his feline companion by holding him to his chest instead of allowing him to ride his shoulders. It didn't seem to help as Sumu let out a few agitated meows after being moved. All it did was made the two warmer, which was a start. It was cold in more ways then one.

The search for the unnamed man that Soray had been looking for was useless, and what Lestari had summed up as a total waste of their time. Les also felt like the woman had expected them not to find anyone, considering her vague description no one would have been able to find the man. It had frustrated her slightly, Sara had seemed worried and Soray’s want to involve her into some sort of weird plan irked her even more. Plus, even after all the searching she hadn’t told them what Sara’s purpose was. The only thing she was grateful for was that they were soon making their way up towards the North, away from all the bodies and the dead. Though, knowing they were heading towards the Great Lake didn’t inspire much confidence either.
Oh she’d heard all the tales, her mother used to scare her with them when she was younger. Why in the hells was Soray bringing them there if she was looking for some old man? Lestari was getting the creepy sensation that the woman had lied to them, and that her plans didn’t involve some old man at all. They couldn’t turn back now, they were too close and Sara would want to stay for some crazy reason or feeling of duty. Lestari watched the others quietly, were they thinking as she was? Did they think this was some sort of crazy trap too? Grabbing a hold of Sara’s arm, Les leaned in to whisper into her ear. “I don’t think we should stay, it’s not safe.” Was she scared? No, she’d stared into Ghosts bloody jaws as he growled from above at her and had proved to Sara and herself she could deal with those emotions.
At the top, Lestari’s eyes snapped to the man yelling for Mizuki. Where had she heard such a name? It was then she realised he was yelling for the priestess in Shinmei Shrine. Was that even wise? “Idiot...” She murmured quietly under her breath, could he not hear the silence that engulfed the place they were in? Lestari heard no birds singing, no crickets chirping, not even the frogs dared make a sound. If that wasn’t unnerving, Sara was freezing where Lestari touched her skin. She gently let go of her to stare at the man, she wasn’t at all surprised that he knew Soray. Though it was the look of pure fury that was interesting, perhaps this was the man they had been looking for. If so, he did not look very old. There was no way she would trust what came out of Soray after all this, Lestari would stay quiet for now, she had no clue what those two were up to.
When the woman stepped out to babble about birds and bells, Lestari starred at her dumb found. She couldn’t remember anything her mother had told her about the priestess, but she’d noticed that even more people were starting to gather now. Some had come with the angry man, others with someone else she didn’t know. She eyed each, searching for familiar faces but found none. No one she could trust, not even the few that had come with their own little group. The only one’s she was willing to trust were those Sara knew. Lestari sighed, she should have stayed home today, she wouldn’t have to worry about getting back stabbed or killed up in the North.

A chill ran up the Shin-Mu's spine as she followed along with the others that had offered their assistance to Shen. Like Cias, the dark noble was hanging back, weary of their guide. At the moment though he was the least of the young woman's worries. As they approached the uninviting waters of the lake, the very air around them seemed to thicken. It was hard to breath, hard to concentrate, and she reached out for Cais' hand, cool fingers closing around his wrist.
She knew what she was feeling, or at the very least had an idea. Everything was chaotic though, far less orderly then she was used to dealing with. There were spirits everywhere, surrounding them, too many to count. What in the name of the Goddess was going on out here?!
Her resolve was crumbling around the edges, and the shouting made her flinch, pale eyes going wide and darting about before settling once again on the back of Shen's head. She squeezed the young man's arm all the tighter, pressing close to his side. "Agreed," she murmured quietly. Her chest rose as she took a deep breath, a vain attempt soothe unraveling nerves. Usually the presence of the dead brought her peace, but not this time. They gave a sense of restless energy, things undone and unspoken, and she could not read them.
Finally she turned her attention up to the shrine, staring at the figure standing on the bridge. She didn't recognize them. There were others though, faces she did know, though none she would have labeled friend.

Kiran remained tense as his gaze drifted between Soray and the unknown man glowering furiously at her. Between glances, he took notice of the other Lunarians that had followed that man and another man that Kiran didn't recognize. He noticed that each of these "leaders" had groups of Lunarians following them to this destination. He knew of the stories about this place, his parents having told him when he was young. Why were they all gathering here, where Lunarians normally feared to tread?
His attention to the hostility between the man and Soray broke as a new Lunarian appeared on the scene. After he turned to stare at the woman standing upon the bridge, Kiran relaxed a fraction as his grip loosened somewhat on the handles of his tonfas. Judging from the fact that she came out of the shrine, he guessed that this woman was Mizuki. He doubted there was anyone in all of Lunaria that didn't know who this woman was. He tried to follow her words, but the whole talk of bells and birds and the other stuff was lost on him.
But the name of Shinta stirred up in a memory in him. Kiran recalled the name of the Noble Captain, having once served in his camp. His gaze darted back over to the angry man, who had called out for Mizuki earlier. Kiran hadn't actually gotten a good look at the man before with other Nobles blocking his view of the Captain as he barked orders to them. Kiran's gaze snapped back to Soray. If that man was indeed the very same Captain Shinta of the Nobles, did that mean Soray was a member of the Legionaires? That wasn't necessarily a correct assumption, but it would certainly explain the fury of Shinta's glare toward Soray. Kiran frowned deeper at this development. What exactly was going on here? He looked toward the priestess again, deciding to remained silent still as he waited for answers.

"My, my," came the crooning voice of the one who called herself Sorray, as she sauntered forward, one hand resting against a voluptuous hip. She gave Boray a flirtatious smile, but there was something else in it - something sharper, as though she were seeing right though him...
"If it isn't Shinta, of the Nobles. What brings you here, my darling?"
Boray - Shinta - merely snorted in derision, flipping dark hair from his eyes. He gave a calculated glance towards Mizuki, the priestess still giving him that mild, curious look as though trying to determine what sort of species he was. She was of neither alliance, Mizuki - yet none dared to touch her, as she was the only woman within the boundaries of Lunaria who could see the future.
And the added fact of the misfortune that would obviously fall upon them should they even touch a strand of her hair.
Shinta scowled.
"I could ask you the same question - Hua An, Western General of the Legion scum. What name are you calling yourself now? Sorray? How pathetic."
There was a practiced sigh, a flip of the hair.
"You're too assuming, you know," she said, and walked in a slow circle around the one called Kiran, running a finger across his shoulder blades. "Don't you remember, Shinta darling, what they say when you assume?"
The sword came out faster than anyone could see, the blade pressing smoothly against Kiran's throat. It was not touching his skin, but an easy flick of the general's hand could change that.
She was, however, not the only one that moved.
The one called Shen had stepped forward, his hand pointed towards the throat of Lestari. It seemed as though there was something sharp beneath each finger...
Hua-An let out a laugh.
"Are we at a stalemate, then, Tenjou? Why so silent, my old friend?"
There was no answer from the leader of the Noble Retainers. Instead his eyes traveled upwards to the priestess, still swaying on her own.
"Mizuki," he said, in a low, calm voice belayed by the anger clearly evident in it.
"Where is the emperor?"
[ OOC: Lestari and Kiran are being held hostage at the moment - it is not recommended that you try to escape, considering you're at the mercy of two extremely experienced leaders of the factions. As for the rest, you may try to help your friends / acquaintances, but it might be wiser to listen, ask questions, and/or plan quietly before suddenly leaping...]

When the true names of the well-ranked Lunarians began to fall on loose lips, Cais blinked a few times, moving his eyes among the three with a bright and curious nature. He couldn't bring himself to be surprised with how they had appeared to him - battle-worn and dangerous. In a single flash of steel any doubt he had of their identities - not even he could have prevented such an attack. That thought chilled him to his core and he felt himself jolt out of Shin's grasp. Not even her calming nature could pierce him when so much was going on.
As Shen moved Cais moved a few steps warily but halted immediately as his name was spoken. Tenjou. His father had spoken of him many times in their household, he doubted there was anyone of the Noble faction not heard of him. Out of the countless patrols Cais had done all on his own charge he had yet to run into any of the Noble leaders - he hadn't even caught a glimpse and now here he had been, following him to some cause.
A knot churned in his stomach while his mind refocused into the conversation. "The Emperor is missing?" Even he couldn't help himself from posing the question to anyone nearby that would listen. Not that Cais gave one way or the other about the man himself, it was unprecedented - something not even he would have thought to have happened or, for that matter, have anything to do with what had been happening in the Imperial City.
Shaking his head clear of the question he took a hard look towards the two Lunarians locked against weapons. Cais had never seen the girl before but from the looks of it she was younger, probably an Academy student. Moving his gaze to the woman and her blade his eyes rested on an acquaintance of his. "Kiran.". He muttered while his hands reached to his side quickly. It was a near involuntary movement as his weapons slid over his hands as his arms moved back to his sides
Though anger in him was swelling his eyes rested on the blade near Kiran's neck. Not even with his speed could Cais attempt a rescue against someone so high in the Legion's ranking. Though the admission of such was a poison in his mind, even the greatest impulse he had couldn't break that truth. He cursed under his breath as he eyed both Tenjou and Hua An.
Whatever control he had on bodily impulses were far stronger than that of his mouth however.
"I expect the use of hostages from the Legion." He muttered bitterly with a sympathetic glance to Kiran. "However, even in desperate times and on matters like this, it's not something I expect of Nobles." He said, glancing back to Lestari. He felt a hotness in his cheeks, as some part of him did know better than to question the actions of his superior specifically, as his bright eyes rested on Tenjou. "I doubt two innocent lives taken will be enough to answer your questions. Even if you kill all of us that goal seems far off."
While his eyes darted back and fourth between them his entire body tensed. He doubted his idle words would have much of an affect, though he felt the need to prepare for anything that could possibly come his way. Pining for some sort of break he nodded once back to Shin. Something had to be done for them, but he was doubtful that the solution would come from him.
Cais wasn't good with rescues.
