User Image Nippon had been surprised at how quickly and easily he had made friends when he and his sister arrived in this new area. The fox he was most grateful to meet had been Rylee. She was sweet, intellegent, energetic and beautiful. She wasn't dating anyone at the moment either.

Nippon blushed and realized that he had fallen behind while lost in his thoughts and picked up the pace until he was next to and slightly behind Rylee again. Rylee had offered to show Nippon her family's meadow and he had readily agreed. Aside from wanting to learn more about this place, he was happy to spend more time with Rylee.

Rylee led her new (and only her second) friend deeper into the woods. He wasn't saying much, which was a change from Orin. But she didn't exactly mind either. She was kind of nervous, actually, and didn't want him to see or know--she had a reputation to keep up, after all!

But still, she was a bit nervous. What would he think about the meadow? Would he like it? Rylee knew she liked it, but that wasn't any guarantee Nippon would. He hadn't grown up there like she had, didn't have memories of time spent with mommies (and, unfortunately, time also spent with the two sets of twins in her family) like she had.

But soon the inevitable happened: they reached their destination. The meadow.

It was part of a large clearing in the woods--large enough that in the center, the sunlight shone down, completely unblocked by the trees. Lush green grasses covered the entire place, with many multicolored wildflowers dotting the area. And, on the border between forest and clearing, there was a strawberry bush: Rylee knew that Stripey Mommy had picked this meadow for just that reason, because it had a strawberry bush, because strawberries were Grandmommies' favorite food.

"We're here," Rylee said as they came to a stop--perhaps unnecessarily. But she felt like she had to say something, had to introduce her home somehow. She just hoped that she didn't sound as nervous as she felt.

Just as Nippon caught up to Rylee again, she stoped and announced that the two of them had arrived. Nippon looked up into the clearing, flipping his long hair back over his shoulder, and let loose a soft ‘oh’ sound in amazement. The clearing was lovely with its many flowers set in a background of emerald green grass. The male could really see why Rylee’s Meadow…er…her mothers’ meadow, was such a special place for her. Especially when considering all the fond memories she most likely has of the place.

“Wow,” he said, finding his tongue again after a brief silence, “it’s gorgeous.” Nippon turned to Rylee and smile gently when he noticed she was a little tense. “I like it here, it seems very peaceful and…are those strawberries?” He asked before he could stop himself. Berries of any type were rare where he came from, grapes and strawberries being the only exceptions. Still it was just a tad rude to mention food seconds after being shown such a special place.

“Excuse me.” He said softly, a light blush crossing his muzzle.

Rylee grinned when she saw that Nippon liked her Mommies' meadow.

"Yup, that's a strawberry bush! I don't think they're ripe yet, though," she said, poking at one of of the berries with a paw.

"You're excused," she added after a moment. She didn't even get what he was excusing himself for, but she was sure it was because he thought he had done something rude. Her sisters Shimmer and Glimmer were doing that all the time. 'Excuse me for bumping into you', like she cared; 'excuse me for getting mud everywhere', like mud wasn't something that was natural, and all over the place.

Some days, Rylee didn't really feel like she fit in with the rest of the family, who were all very girly, while Rylee was clearly not.

Nippon smiled in response to Rylee's grin, his tail waving behind him. He too poked a berry with his paw. "I have to admit to a weakness for these. Strawberries are one of the few plants I not only eat, but actively seek out. We had so many bushes on my island." He looked at Rylee and sent her a full blown smile of joy. "I'm very glad they have them here as well."

He looked back at the bush and poked a berry again. "Pity it isn't ripe yet. But they'll get there eventually."

He could sense that Rylee didn't quite know what she was excusing him for, but didn't want to spell it out. In fact, he was glad she hadn't taken offense. Relaxing, Nippon withdrew his paw out of the strawberry bush and looked back at Rylee. "Will you show me more, Rylee? I'd enjoy strolling with you and seeing the rest of the meadow." Nippon had a love for peaceful places, but he recognized that he liked the company more.
