So, last friday was the game with our rival school. I live in the neighborhood of that school, so I have friends from church and such who are in their band. Will yesterday I had a church activity and got a ride with one of said friends, and he kept bragging that his band did better then ours(I believe him not. Their band sucks.) We argued about this for a while..(i couldnt go to the game because I was ineligible. I'm eligible again1 Woot!)

Well, at the church activity we met up with a couple fo people from my band. When he wasn't around, I pointed this arguement out to them. What did I find out?

The rival schools band was marching with flipfolders!

To my band, this is an absolute disgrace! We are expected to have our music memorized as soon as we start drill for it, so the bd can say "This set starts at so and so measure, add music" and not have to wait for us to find it. So we've had the music we marched on field on friday memorized since band camp, and to be told that we were horrible by someone from a band marching with flipfolders, I nearly killed the guy. Although when I brought this poitn up, he could no longer argue, so he changed the subject.

Have you ever seen a band march flipfolders for a performance? have you ever marched flipfolders at a performance? I'm really curious now.

I have seen one where they had 5 or 6 people marching with, probably cause they didn't have the music memorized but it was early season.

Yeah. Our marching season is over 2 months in already, so stil marching with flipfolders is kinda ridiculous. We set drill for our entire part 2 tonight and we were expected to march it with music without flipfolders when we have only had the music for about a week. We have a memorization test on it tomorrow.

I also see it as disgraceful and I know a lot of the upperclassmen back when I was in a HS marching band were so against using flip folders, they'd memorize all of their stand tunes and would just never use flip folders for anything. At all.

yeah i hate seeing other bands perform with flip folders so I try to memorize music as fast as my brain can take it. even for our review for festival here, i see these schools and they have flips books. -_- except for the bigger schools though.
it's meant to be memorized, just like the drill is, and my "new" band director had kept pressing us about it, and we did great at our last performance which was like three days ago.

Yeah we're expected to have our music memorized too.
For our first show though my band director allowed us to use flip folders. smile But after that we had to have it memorized XDD

Those things drive me crazy, to be honest.
I, myself, have a seriously difficult time memorizing music and hate every single moment when I have to do it, but I think it looks so much cleaner without the music in front of you. Besides, if you aren't willing to take the time to memorize, why are you even in band to begin with?
Perhaps that's just me, though.

Our band sucks. Flip folders are required. And it's not even a ******** marching band. We used to even use music stands with the music paperclipped to it. Then I bought a flip folder so I wouldn't have to carry the stand around. XD

For an actual show I think its really, really. REALLY stupid to march with flip folders. Learning the music is the first thing you're supposed to learn before you even learn drill. Music needs to be memorized ASAP!!! Now, for pre-game and fight song times, yes I think its fine to have flip-folders b/c pre-game honestly isnt that important. To me at least. Although if you dont have your own school's fight song memorized you're kinda lame... no offense biggrin

i totally agree. I've had our school fight song memorized since freshman year, mostly because we had this one game where we literally played it 20 times in the first quarter(we scored 80+-0, and won obviously) Seriously, if someone didn't have it memorized by the end of that game, they weren't playing.

We rarely do pregame at homegames, but if we do, we treat it just like an away performance and play our full show both pregame and halftime.

We are only allowed to have flipfolders int eh stands for stands tunes. Our bd would rather we focus on memorizing our show music then stands tunes, so memorization of them isn't required. A lot of us have the older oes memorized, or about half of them. Mostly those are memorize if we play them too much, nto memorize in outside practice.

At rehearsals, if my band is 'allowed' to march with flipfolder(basically times before our memorization test on he song) the bd doesn't give us time to actually put them on our lyres. So a lot of times we are forced into memorization(I memorize better this way anyway, so I usually never march with my flipdfolder unless I have had very limited practice time on a song.) For example; I've only used my flipfolder once when we started learning Ode To joy. After that runthrough, I had the pattern of the notes down enough to not bother with the flipfolder for full runthrough.

When we are getting ready to learn a new show they teach us the music first and have separate music rehersals and sectionals to help with memorization. Then during band camp we work on putting the music with the show Then to keep the music fresh we have sectionals throughout the season.

My school used to be the biggest in the county, and ever since the current director came there, we've memorized our music. His reasoning on why we do this for our shows and parades is because it just doesn't look professional to have a folder jutting out in front of you. Now we're declining in size because nobody likes us because our administration is completely stupid. XP

When I was in HS, our show music never fit in flip folders, so we couldn't really use them. Still, some people used music when we played for drill team right after our performance. It was hidden during the show, though. I'll also say that if we didn't have each part passed off by the game we premiered it, we either didn't march or went without a horn (I don't remember which).

I hate seeing bands march with flipfolders. Blech.

My college uses them basically as music folders - you keep all your show and pep music in there and pull it out during sectionals or ensemble music time. You also have it for reference in your "nail bag" (Home Depot bag!) on the field.

My high school had school flipfolders that held all the pep tunes and were passed out at games, but we never played with the flipfolders attached.

My middle school used to use flipfolders when I was there, but they don't now. Ugh, the Flutist's Friend is a nightmare!

Hey, now now... some marching bands are more in experienced. Maybe they just need help. Don't be downing on other people!
Put yourselves in THEIR positions...
I find it mean and rude for people to just be saying that stuff about other marching bands.
