Quote: The Decision has been made! Please check my last post on page 3 for the results and a lengthy explanantion. I'd like everyone's opinion on this please before I make a decision. Due to recent events that I'm not really wanting to get into at this moment, I'm considering making this guild private or even hidden. FYI: Currently, we are a public guild. This means all members of Gaia can read our threads and post in them whether they are GPG members or not. If we were private then only GPG members could post in our threads, but all Gaians could read them. If we were hidden, then ONLY GPG members could read and post in this guild. Non-members couldn't read past the homepage. So, I want to hear your opinions on this. Should we go Private or Hidden and why? I have always maintained that this guild would ALWAYS be public so everyone could benefit from our knowledge, help, and support without having to join. But, like I said, due to recent events I think it may be best if we change. It's unfortunate that some things have to ruin things for everyont, but that's life for ya! Anywho, please let me know what you think. Crew and all members!

I don't know what the situation is that is making you consider making this private/hidden, but I can definitely see the value in the GPG being a private guild. People could easily see what kind of guild this is so they'll know if they want to join, but they won't be able to post until they've been approved. We have the pregnancy/childbirth thread in the main gaian forums for people who just want to drop by and ask questions. If we did go private, we should probably have an announcement for non-members who stop by directing them to that thread.
I would hate for us to go hidden because then it would be hard for people to preview the guild and know if they want to join. Making us a private guild would alleviate most troll problems. However, if someone has acted out in a way that could pose a potential danger to our children, I can understand why you would want to make us hidden.
I am not going to vote in the poll at this time because I can see the value in keeping us the way we are or in making us private or hidden, depending on the circumstances.

Well, you already know how I feel about most of this...
Is there a way to make the other forums hidden and the main one private? Due to the most recent problem, being private isn't really going to solve it, sadly. Meaning we could be listed as private and then all we have to do is click an option on the forums? I've never made a new forum so I have no idea what they can do besides be for the crew or for the whole guild to go into.
I'm just upset that we have to consider this at all. Because it has always been the goal of this guild to be public so that anyone can stop in and get help or look at the threads but we've been abused too many times and that's not ok, either.
So at the very least, I'd like to go private and if there is a way to do it, make some of the forums hidden so that non-members can't get into them and be poking around.

Unfortunately it's all or none. There is no way to hide parts of the guild while keeping other parts public/private. I wish we could, but it's just not possible. And you're right, going private wouldn't solve this most recent problem.
Also, to allay any fears, it has nothing to do with our children or anything like that. It's mostly to do with other Gaians behaving in a very immature manner.

Mmm... If it's something bad enough for you to want it discussed, then I'd say it's probably worth doing. I'd say private, for all the goodly reasons mentioned earlier. heart

I still lean, even with the most recent problem towards staying public, it has always been one of the goals of this guild to be open for the public to post their questions etc.
If we have to go private I agree with making a thread for non members to find out more about the guild etc in just the normal forums.

I agree with Brad. Being public is a nice idea, but if it's this serious we might want to consider becoming at least private.

badloki Unfortunately it's all or none. Well, if that's the case then I vote, "all." I'd rather be hidden and not have to deal with all these issues that have been popping up.

I say all as well. I hate that it has to come to this, but with the issues (including trolls and liars) it's just come to this point.

I have to say, I would never have discovered this guild had it not been for a banner in someones signature.
Like a few other members, I don't yet have my own kids (however broody I am, other things need to be tied up first!) This guild has helped me in choosing paths I wish to take. When Jeff and I got together, we knew we wanted one another to parent the others offspring, but the guild has helped me not to rush my decisions.
I guess my point is that this is not just a parenting guild, but an educational tool in a way, helping others to realise the depth of their own choices. I know when I do become a parent, I will have so much to thank this guild and it's members for, and I am sure others feel the same.
If the guild were to be made private and hidden then this would no longer be an option for alot of curious people, but if it were made private, it would at least stop any unwanted types from posting?
It's a shame that a decision has to be made, I don't know what happened but I will support whatever decision is made. 3nodding

I would say Private sounds like a good idea. My guild is private, so that way other Gaians can preview the guild and view the information if they choose, but they have to be a member to post. My guild has never really been anything other than a source of information for teens (and people in general) who don't have knowledge about certain topics. So for me, having my guild Private isn't a huge deal.
I also have rules in place stating that anyone who lies is automatically banned from my guild. And people who troll will get a reminder, a guild warning, or an automatic banning from my guild (depending on the severity of the offense). Since I am also a Dedicated Moderator, I have also let members know that violations of the Gaia ToS and rules will result in that person being reported to another moderator. It's not a threat, just a reminder, in an effort to keep insults and flaming to a minimum.
I welcome people to join my guild, but I have limits. My guild is to be a positive, welcoming place for people who need support and information. People who choose to break rules and disrespect others are not welcome in my guild, and will be banned from my guild, or treated appropriately (in the case of a reminder or a guild warning, etc).
So that way if they apply to join my guild, I can screen applications, and decide who is allowed to join. But I'm not a total b***h about it - right now my only limitation is that the person who is applying to join gives me a reason why they want to be in my guild. It can be simple, even as basic as "I want to learn more", as long as it's a reason.
So that's my 2 cents.

Private. It seems the best compromise. I know you always said this guild would be open for everyone and in an ideal world, that would be great... but this is Gaia and like any open forum it will have it's share of bad apples.
It's free to join and at least that way people can still read what goes on here. They can decided to join if they want to after reading the discussions but unwanted/needed posts and threads can be kept at a minimum. You'll always get someone joining and then causing problems but that's what the admins made the ban button for.
My 2 pence worth.

Thanks for the input y'all. I REALLY appreciate it!
And I agree, for the trolling and other similar problems, going Private would be perfect! However, this newest issue that the GPG Staff is currently dealing with is what is making me consider going hidden. You see, it isn't trolling that is the cause of this problem. Without going into too much detail, it has to do with people seeing/reading certain things in our guild, then acting immaturely with that info. So that's why the Hidden option has come up. If the guild were Hidden, then these people couldn't see the info and therefore couldn't use it in the fashion in which it is being used. If it were Private, then they could still see the info.
And that's the crux of the problem. My stand and goal was to ALWAYS keep this guild as Public and accessible to EVERYONE as possible. But because of the actions of a certain group, this is now jeopardized.
I don't want to isolate ourselves from our primary function (being a place for people to come get info/ask questions with no pressure added), but at the same time, I don't want to expose the guild to certain people who wish to behave in an ill manner.
