Welcome, Welcome! Mr. Lore here ready to bring to the SDRPers a Study Group! But first, a bit about it.

What's our goal here?
To roleplay, and through hands-on experience teach the players simple guidelines to follow that will lead to improved roleplaying and character creation.

How are we going to do it?
In this, my first Study Group, the players shall join their Guide (played by myself) on an EPIC JOURNEY set in a fabled world of Kings, Quests, and Magic. It's going to be a bit of an old-school adventure tale, with action and intrigue and mayhap a little romance.

How will the lessons be taught?
Simple enough. At the end of each of my posts I'll provide feedback, making suggestions and corrections that will help the players along in their quest for improvement. In addition, I will be implementing "Awesome Points" (AP) which will be usable within the RP to allow characters to do... well, AWESOME things. They will be earned by meeting criteria I will later lay out. These criteria will be benchmarks, signs to myself and others that display one's improvement and drive to push themselves forward.

How does one earn AP?
Everyone will earn 1 AP for joing. Furthermore a bonus AP will be awarded to the individuals with:
1) The most unique character
2) The most detailed character background AND
3) The best archetype remake

The first two are pretty self-explanatory. With the third, what I'm looking for is a stereotype (dim but mighty warrior, knight in shining armor, wise old mage, etc) that is crafted in a refreshing manner. Another way to put is someone who fits an age-old character stereotype but comes across in a way that is still fresh and interesting. More on AP below.

How do I join?
Follow the instructions pertaining to character sheets.

I look forward to roleplaying with you all!

Once Upon a Time in the Land of Darivla...

Things were well. Yes, once upon a time they were- but no longer! Our rightful and noble King has been stripped of his throne- poisoned some say!- and kept many many yards beneath the earth's surface. No one knows just how deep the Prison Crypt goes, but they say it is at the bottom where he now dwells.

And why? So that greedy Pilus Manchuro could have the throne instead! He marches the armies about. They are his steel gauntlet upon his iron fist used to oppress those who speak their minds and behave as though it were still the days of old. Some even say the Rogue Raiders are in his employ!

Well NO MORE! We have had ENOUGH! I, Guiles Greenbrook, will amass as many as I can in revolt against the vile villain that proclaims himself King! And if none shall join me than I will march alone to Castle Mulstrad and face his army single-handedly. Me! Fifty and four years along and I seem to be the bravest among us!

Please, join me! Everyone! It will take many folks from all walks of life banding together to right these wrongs! Help me!

Me and You
This shall serve as substitute to a typical rules section. I just wanted to mention a few things you should understand about how I GM, and are less of rules and more of a "This is how I do things."
Third-Person: We will all write in the third person perspective.
NPCs: I will handle the actions of ALL NPCs unless I say otherwise. This may seem a little restrictive, but I assure you I will be around often enough to keep things flowing smoothly.
Introductions: I will introduce your character to the plot- do not post until I have done so.
Actions/Reactions: To counter godmoding/auto-hits/etc I implement a very simple system. Whenever you enter combat, or attempt something that has a chance of failure (magic, fighting, etc) you shall post your character ATTEMPTING the action. In my posts, I shall indicate the results of your attempt. In this way I can make sure no one oversteps their character's abilities and also institute some degree of story control when random results aren't good enough. By default, however, it is safe to assume the results of your actions are determined by something of a hidden die roll.

Darivla and You
Darivla is a sprawling country about the size of Florida and roughly the same shape. Also, it's an island all its own. Two more islands are closely clustered to each other some 100 miles south that are strikingly similar to the yin yang. Darivla's capital and Castle Mulstrad are located at the dead center of the island's bend. The army is easily one hundred thousand strong and the total population is pushing two million.

Our journey shall begin in a fishing town on the southern tip of Darivla, in a homely place named Hullaboola. There you shall encounter the strange and limping Guiles Greenbrook who shall enlist you to his cause to put the rightful King in his place and take down the greedy brother that ousted him.

Magic and You
Magic in this world is very simple. All living things possess a living energy: chi. All magic in this realm requires this essence to be performed. Ultimately all forms- White, Black, Blue- are the same, differing only in their application. But before the different magics are explained, it's best to understand the rules of magic. They are as follows:
1) Only living things possess chi. This means two things: the first is that both the animal and plant kingdoms possess chi. Second: with the proper training, one could use the chi of another living thing- thus defending their own body from rule 2.
2) Chi is tethered to these living things, and is synonymously referred to as a body's soul for this reason. As a body's chi is used, the body suffers deteriorating effects. Performing magic beyond one's ability can lead to death, and that is why it is vital to learn one's limits. More than one (heroic) story ends with the complete annihilation of a caster.
3) Chi cancels chi. This rule is the reason you can't just channel your energy into someone else's body and crush them from the inside. Their chi will cancel your own, which is why Black Magic exists (see below for explanation of Black Magic). This also leads mage duels to tend toward the bloody. As chi beats against chi, bodies are put under great duress and ugly things tend to happen- just read rule 2.
4) Magic is a LEARNED skill. This means anyone with the desire to become a mage can do so with the appropriate teachers, texts, and time (or The Three T's of Magic). Due to the amount of time it takes the vast majority of mages, however, it is rare for someone to learn, let alone master, more than one field. Those that prove themselves proficient enough in more than one field are called Sages.

Now, the applications of magic. Below are the basic descriptions as well as a list of all uses for each type seen over the course of the roleplay.

White Magic: The most common of White practices is to guide the chi of an injured body to wounds, accelerating healing or converting the energy into the necessary mass (ie, sealing a wound). However, White Magic is any use of chi to build, strengthen, and facilitate life. This extends to include the building of muscular tissue like steroids, hastening physical growth, stimulating hormonal activity, and so forth. This leads much room for one to do evil with White Magic, so do not let the term mislead you.
Known Abilities:
Blue Magic: With Blue Magic, one learns to channel chi into defensive barriers, and the more advanced practitioners can even redirect or take control of chi thrown their way. And to top it off, Masters of Blue Magic claim the ability to recover "unused" chi.
Known Abilities:
Black Magic: Any use of chi to change- destructively or otherwise- something corporeal is Black Magic. The first idea that comes to most people is channeling chi as raw energy and flinging "bolts" of it at an enemy. Another common use is to simply blast chi to move one's self with greater force or combat an opposing force (ie, blasting one's self into a twenty-foot jump onto a roof or knocking away a sword coming toward your neck).
Known Abilities:

Thaumaturgy: Means "casting magic," and here I will explain how it is done. Ultimately, armed with the proper knowledge and skill one can cast magic without so much as looking at the individual they intend to attack, without even an incantation. However, only the true Masters are capable of such feats, and even they tend toward the the safe methods. Here they are all listed:
Evocation - This method involves training one's self to perform specific actions in tandem with an incantation, or spell. Examples: A Black Mage shouting, "Bolt!" when throwing chi at an opponent, or a Blue Mage yelling, "Shield!" while throwing up a barrier to defend against an attack. Of course, words like "Bologna" or the phrase, "Drunken kettles blaring Radiohead" would be just as effective; it is not the words that cause the magic, it's simply mental training.
Kinesthesia: Rather than using words, kinesthetics helps a mage perform by cueing magic with various body movements. Examples: White Mages pressing hands to a wound they intend to seal or a Blue Mage throwing their arms forward when forming a chi wall. Likewise a Black Mage could throw their arms forward when throwing raw energy at an opponent. Remember, it's not the movements that cause the magic, it simply makes the process easier.
Freebase or Silenturgy: The way of the Masters. Without a single physical or audible sign, they cast their magic through sheer focus and willpower.

Guild Maegistrum:
This is an invitation-only Guild that recognizes skilled and upcoming Mages or potential students. If you want to be the best of the best, this is the crowd to hang with. It's run by seven Grandmasters, and they are unparalleled in their knowledge of the ways of chi. Only Guild-recognized Mages serve in the military, although the Guild is NOT part of the government itself. The two are on uneasy terms since the change of King, and more than one member has been heard murmuring their dissent in the Guildhalls.

Terminology:
It's important to know how some words will be used in this setting as pertains to magic. Here are the important ones and I may add others later as necessary.
Chi - Also: soul, essence. This is the energy tethered to all living things, and is required for the use of magic.
mage - Any person capable of performing magic.
Sage - A person proficient in more than one field of magic.
Thaumaturgy - The method of casting magic (see above list) as well as the teaching or studying thereof.
Master - Rather self-explanatory. They are Master of some field of magic, and are ALWAYS addressed as such by their colleagues, even those of equal or greater standing.
Grandmaster - These dudes is boss. Seriously. Don't f%$# with them. They'll ruin you. And if you're lucky they may even be willing to teach you a thing or two. There are seven and they run the Guild Maegistrum.

Now I know this is a lot simply to cover magic, but it exists so as to make magic more clearly defined. Let this stand as an example of the amount of thought one should put into magic when creating their own roleplay.

So you want to be a Hero?...

Very well! But, first I have some questions for you:

Character Skeleton
What is your name? [I will not accept ANY copies from ANY known source (movies, literature, celebrities, etc). Be CREATIVE.]
Where do you come from? [Gaia Username]
And how hold are you? [No younger than 17]
Right, well, what can you do? [Pick a primary skill and a secondary skill. The list is: one-hand swords, two-hand swords, one-hand axes, two-hand axes, polearms, bows, crossbows, White Magic(healing), Black Magic(offense), and Blue Magic(defense).]
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself. [Minimum 2 6-sentence paragraphs for biography.]
And how does that make you feel? [Same length requirement for personality.]
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me. [Physical appearance. NO images. Period. This is one element of the creative part of the exercise.]

Right, well that's about everything with that. Oh! Don't forget to to title your PM "I'm Going to be a Hero!" And remember, NO BLANKS for answers. I will also NOT accept "Unknown," or "No Answer." After acceptance, I will introduce you to the story as I see fit.

Anyways, enough ramblin bout that. You should prolly know I'm a bit abrasive- and stern! Like a training commander. I been told I criticize a mite harsh, but I just call 'em as I see 'em. It's never personal, believe me you. I just like to be honest and straightforward with everyone, even when it means sayin things I don't wanna say or you don't wanna hear.
Now, I would like to 'pologize for the way I'm dressed. Been a little short of coin the last few months and it shows. Look! My greaves are scuffed and cut, m'pants are more olive than their old forest green- and m'tunic too! Luckily my belt's still holdin up the ol' trousers, and m'shoulder-sling still keeps a firm grip on m'spear. My cloak's lookin pretty shoddy too what with all the holes. And by god, my face must be a mess! Ruddy hazel eyes and my scraggly beard and my messed up ebon locks- and by gods there's some gray sneakin in! I know, not exactly the image you had in mind for a leader or a savior, but I'll do. You can bet on that.

Quote:
What is your name? ”My name’s Raphael , but Raph for short.”
-
Where do you come from? ”That’d be from Keynir over there.“
-
And how hold are you? ”Nineteen years and some.”
-
Right, well, what can you do? ”I wield the bow! Aside from that I also am growing more experienced with defensive magic.”
-
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself. “Well, I guess you’re aiming on some backstory huh? Where to start.. I was born somewhere in the outskirts is the capital. My life’s been mostly quiet; meaning I was spared of disastrous family genocides and none of them were a serial killer or anything. There has been the regular bullying, stealing of food at the market and other child-like mayhem.
Ehm, got into using the bow pretty early thanks to my mother. She was an enthusiastic and skilful archer, but was too soft to ever do anything else with it than shoot targets made of hay. My dad’s also a passive guy, he’s owned a farm since before I was born. He’s not a corporate guy, and we never had that much money but the farm has always been able to provide us with food. My family and I like being close to home to care for my sister. She’s gotten traumatized after being brutally harassed by a few older guys about 4-5 years ago. Gah, it still pisses me off thinking about it. Anyway, I felt like I failed to protect her as a big brother. I always was interested in magic, but this really got me determined to master it. ”

-
And how does that make you feel? ”How it makes me feel? Are you kidding or something? It made me feel pretty shitty of course. It made me realize life can change for the worse and I’ve gotten quite protective with people I care about.
You know, a lot of people think I am a little foolish and naïve sometimes but I am sure it’s not that bad. I mean, gullible is not in the dictionary right? It’s also a little hard to maintain focus for me. Practicing with my bow helps a lot and it’s usually not as bad when I am shooting it.. But it does make listening for long amounts of time annoying. ”

-
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me. ”Ehm, I have a slightly tanned skin, a build I like to call lean and semi-muscular and I am about 170cm tall. Quite a good runner thanks to my size. My eyes are a nice clear blue, or so I am told, and I have black scruffy hair. It’s usually cut short by myself ‘cause I don’t like it to get in my eyes. I have a little silver earring in my left ear and a silver solid two inch wide bracelet with a crescent moon hanging from it on my left wrist.
Clothe-wise I wear a light chainmail top over a woolen tunic studded with leather. Upper and lower arm guards, accompanied by matching thigh and shin guards. My pants are a faded kind of green and are just there to cover my legs up. Keeping my quiver lodged on my back with a tight shoulder band, I almost never take that thing off. When I need my hands I keep my bow on my shoulder as well.“

”Well I hope you have enough information now, I am done talking.”

Quote:
What is your name?
I go by many names, but I prefer Angelo Juusan.
Where do you come from?
From the northern frostlands held by Lady Rachetgirl11
And how old are you?
27, good sir!
Right, well, what can you do?
I mostly studied white magic, and someday, I wish to branch into other magics. I am also decent with a one handed sword.
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself.
I was abandoned at birth, but found and adopted by a kind elderly couple who already had a grown son. He was 20 at the time. As I grew older, my natural intellect displayed itself several times. My parents wished to send me to one of the magic academies, but they had no money for it. I read as many books as I could about magic, hoping to be able to use it someday.

My brother wasn't around often, but one day, when I was ten, he came back calling himself a "Master". He went through town, healing the sick and wounded. Then he left. Three years later, he returned again calling himself a "Sage". He said he was going to retire from what he had been doing, he had built up a decent supply of coin. He agreed to pass onto me his knowledge of white magic and sword play. I took to the magic quite easily, enjoying the ability to heal others and myself.

After a while, he told me that in order to advance my knowledge further, I would need to leave home and adventure for a while. He called it "being a Journeymage". I agreed, and left my home behind. That was only five years ago.

Now I'm here, talking to you. I get the feeling you might need a healer, just looking at you. You look like the kind of man that has trouble just swirling around him.
And how does that make you feel?
I guess I'm a little depressed from leaving. You know, homesick. Nevermind the fact that every single place I've been was a lot warmer then home, but I wanna go home and say hi. You just don't know what you have until you deny yourself the pleasure of having it.

I'm a healer, period. I heal anyone who needs it. My only exception is when someone is irredeemably evil. I'm also an optimist, always thinking that things will look up. I guess I've got that wanderer's spirit, huh? Go whichever way the wind blows. Maybe I should find myself some direction-ah, my self-doubt hitting me again! Forgive me, I tend to flip on my emotions.
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me.
No problem. I keep my light brown hair as short as possible-I don't need it in my eyes. I keep my facial hair short as well, and my eyes have a turquoise glint to them.

As for clothing, I wear a blue tunic with green pants that are worn from my travels. My leather boots are encrusted with mud and grime-nasty. I have my fine blade, forged by my father, on my belt of black leather. Now, you'll notice that my white cloak isn't as faded or as dirty as the rest of my clothes-that's because about a month ago, a woman I met was so glad to have her boy's illness healed that she sowed me this white cloak, with an emblem made of a pair of angel wings embroidered on.

Right, i think that about wraps this up. Where are you heading? To create an army, you say? Well, lead on. I think my luck's about to change...

Quote:
What is your name? Julahc
Where do you come from? Death By Kaiju
And how hold are you? 32
Right, well, what can you do? -Primary: Pole-Arms
-Secondary: Black Magic
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself.- A foreigner to Darivla, Julahc served for most of his adult life as a Spear-man in a distant land's war band. Living amongst the harsh climate of a biting desert, he was taught how to become one with the sand; he utilised black magic to control sand and sand alone. For years his military life was one of contempt, until a careless ambush saw his comrades slaughtered. Beaten and weakened, Julahc was taken to Darivla in shackles, an exotic soldier forced into the throes of the new King's army. Though the journey took weeks, the soldier was able to muster whatever chi he could; when the slave ship docked on a bay, he was able to escape through the ruse of a mustered sandstorm. In the months that followed Julahc has served as a nomad, witnessing the injustices of the new regime.

And how does that make you feel? Julach is stoic and hardened in nature. His eyes are used to the harsh aspects of a warring life; he has no fear of death. As a foreigner, he still treats natives with hostility, and has trouble learning the domestic language; it is not unlikely to see him mix his homeland's phrases into sentences. Julach has a strong credence in justice and freedom, and thus has no qualms with protecting the slighted peoples of his new homeland.

Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me: Julahc's physical stature shows his strength- at 6"4 with rippling muscles, he is capable of towering over most. His dark olive skin is covered in black tattoos of various sizes and shapes; his most notable being spikes that curl around one side of his face. One of his eyes sits slightly lazy and whightened with a healed scar running down; the result of a lucky escape. In terms of clothing, he never covers his chest with armour, believing in speed as a form of protection. Instead, Julahc wears a hooded cloak that covers one arm, serving to cloak his pole axe. A pair of white baggy trousers with a dark tattered sash, alongside a pair of long weathered sandals add to his image of an alien warrior.

What is your name? "Names are a powerful thing in a land of Magic. but, if you must, call me Rasven. Rasven Zeare"
Where do you come from? I hail from Critical Acclaim
And how hold are you?
"I have walked this earth for nearly 24 years, and am nearing my 25th year of life."
Right, well, what can you do? "I am primarily gifted with the long bow, and am currently growing in my knowledge of Blue Magic, to defend from close range, as a bow isnt really a good close range weapon"
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself.
"I was born into a normal family, and lead a normal life, until I crossed paths with a ranger in the forest one day. it changed my life, the seeing the way he tended to a wounded fox, and taking it in to nurse it back to health. I began spending alot of time with the Ranger, who called himself Daethrae. from that point on, being in the forest took on a whole new meaning, and eventually, when I came of the age of 13, he took me under his wing officially, and taught me the way of the Ranger. he trained me for nearly 10 years, and on the eve of my tenth year of apprenticeship, he gave me the title of Ranger. it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I am now accompanied by a hawk, which I have given the name of Sarin. he is my companion, but I would never be as arrogant as to call him a pet, as he is as free as I am. Sarin helps me find my way in the forest, and has been a trusted companion ever since I can remember. one of my hobbies that I like to do is use the wood from dead trees to make carvings of different animals. its a simple craft, but one I enjoy all the same. the one im working on currently is one of Sarin, and its just about done, except for a few feathers on the wings and tail. I am also a vegetarian, because in my opinion, no animal should suffer so that I can have a meal."
And how does that make you feel?
"I feel very blessed that i have been born into such an area. the forest here is wonderful, and its shady depths offers a haven and a place to explore, and tend to any animals, or people that I may come across. I enjoy helping other, and it brings me great joy to know I have positively affected someone. aside from the forest, I also enjoy spending time on the water. its so unpredictable and vast and it just gets my heart going every time I take my small boat out."
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me.
I stand about five feet, ten inches tall. my build is well muscled and wiry frame. they told me I have auburn hair, that is long enough to touch the top of my shoulders, and green eyes, my usual attire is a tan hat, with a circular brim, a forest green tunic, which extends an inch and a half past my knees. under it I a pair of matching green pants. and brown deer hide boots, that cover my legs up to two inches below my knees. when traveling, I wear a black traveling cloak. I carry my bow in its quiver, which is open at my left shoulder. on my left arm I wear a padded bracer, so that Sarin may sit on my arm without causing me discomfort. over time I got used to the new equipment. "

"well thank you for listening to this man's tale. I hope you enjoyed it, because I most certainly enjoyed telling it. good day to you, fellow."

Quote:
What is your name?
They call me Jack Magnus.
Where do you come from?
I come from Insane In Yo Membrane.
And how hold are you?
I'm 19, I guess. As long as I can kick a**, it doesn't really matter, right?
Right, well, what can you do?
I'm trained in white magic and bare hand fighting.
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself.
I come from a small village in the outskirts of the Kingdom. One day a plague hit my village and with no knowledge of white magic, people started to die. I myself caught the plague. A travelling mage happened to pass the village and saw our suffering. He took it upon himself to heal every villager and soon enough all were well. I looked up to that mage who saved me from the brink of death. The mage stayed in our village and taught us how to harness chi and use it to heal and strengthen our bodies. He took a special interest in me and taught me bare hand martial arts. A year had passed and the mage left. When I turned 18, I started my own journey to help people just as that mage did.
And how does that make you feel?
What are you a shrink? You could probably tell by now that I'm a guy who says whatever pops into my head. People have described me as rash and careless. Some comrades said I was reliable because I always had their back, no matter what.
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me.
Seriously, gramps? Well, I'm say 6'3'', 170 lbs. I have short, silver hair and amber eyes. No facial hair. Armor slows me down so I wear a green cloak and leather tunic, sandals, and belt. Oh, and pants, of course. My hands and feet are wrapped in bandages for fighting and I'm well-built as you can imagine. Am I in or what?

Quote:
What is your name? Ida, just Ida.
Where do you come from? Just Before an Eclipse
And how hold are you? Don’t you know to never ask a lady her age?! You’re right, you’re right, I ain’t even seen no lady. Just don’t spread it around I’ve reached 23.
Right, well, what can you do? Many things sir, many things. Oh, you mean weapons? Well, I’m a fair hand with a glaive; I take whenever I go out and I’s got a short sword when the men pretend to be short on coin, if you know what I mean.
Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself. As for my parents, I don remember ‘em. All I got is barkeep’s memory: how I was sold to him from my whore of a mother. Mind you, sold, not taken in by his kindly heart. Still he fed and clothed me, so I have to work for him now to pay off those years—when I was working anyway. Boy would I be happy not to have to see his ugly face every morning. I gotta get up at the crack of dawn to clean up yestereve’s mess.
Anyway, you aren’t here for that. You’re wondering about my other job ain’t you honey? The one I do at nights? Don’t worry, I ain’t got no complaints. Oh, everyone here knows to wait until later to get with me. But as you’re new honey, I figured, I’d give you a hint. What? You aren’t? You think I’m ugly or something? Oh. You just wanna know about me? Right. If that makes you feel better when you go back to your wife. Well, if you don’t ask barkeep’s opinion, I’m a hardworking gal. I’m on my feet all day and half the night then my back the rest of the time. I got this charisma about me; most people like me. I can’t explain it myself, but a few words and I can convince any man in from the street for a drink. I like to think there’s something special to me.
And how does that make you feel? You’re not going tattling back to the barkeep are ya? To tell ya the truth, I’m thinking I can’t live here all my life. I make some extra coin at night, one fourth and I’ve been gatherin’ in up. I heard about the king and all, but that ain’t any of my business. Naw, I just want to get out of here anyway I can. Oh? You care about the king? I was just kidding, so do I! You can’t be too careful who you tell can ya?
Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me. Hah! You’re quite the funny man, ain’t cha? I’m a barmaid, what do you expect? If I wasn’t pretty with big boobs, I’d be doing dishes now wouldn’t I? My hair’s the feel of hay and a little darker than it. Overall I’m a big woman. A lot of it is strength, but I’ve been fed well. Nobody wants to lie with someone with no meat to grab onto. I swear though, the barkeep gives me dresses to wear, and damned if I’ll fall out of them immediately. Naw, I got to spend my own coin for a few bits of clothing that can cover all me up.

What is your name? Diane Condij

Where do you come from? Dread_Detective

And how hold are you? 25

Right, well, what can you do? My primary skill is in one-handed swords and my secondary skill is with bows.

Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself. Well, I was raised in a small village where the girls were looked to marry and make kids ready for farm work. I was a bit of an outcast for wanting to do something besides the hard life of farming. I was always playing with the boys and practicing my sword technique on scarecrows. I ran away from how when I was about 13 when my parents tried to marry me off to a blacksmith. I managed to leave with a group of gypsies that were passing through. While with them, I learned how to be sneaky and use a bow well. I was with the gypsy band for a few months when we were attacked by a group of Raiders. They killed our leader and most of the other gypsies. I was lucky enough to hide in one of the ruined wagons until they went on their way. I wandered around some more in hope of finding another group to travel with. I was half starved and sick from lack of warm clothes when I found a small group of mercenaries. At first I thought they would rape then kill me but they fed and clothed me. When I got better, I realized this was a group of women mercenaries. They taught me how to fight and how to survive in this world.

And how does that make you feel? I'm still haunted by the memory of my gypsy clan being murdered. But, I'm glad I have a chance to fight for my survival as well for a good cause. I'm wary of most men because I have been in so many situations where they threatened me or my companions. I'm always up for a fight but I don't go out of my way to find one. I am always lookin' around to make sure we aren't being followed, but I'm no paranoid fighter.

Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me. Let me try to tell ya', I'm a tall woman about five feet nine who is tan as leather from my exposure to the elements. I have dark red hair that just hits my shoulder. I have twin braids that frame my face so it's easier to fight. I wear a red leather corset that makes the gents forget how handy I am with weapons. I also wear a linen shirt under it so, i don't show too much skin. I wear a long skirt that is brown that is slit to one side so I can run, the rest of it is cinched up to my knee. Just in case anyone gets any funny ideas about looking up my skirt, I wear leather pants to aide my running. I have a large hoop earring in my ears from my time with the gypsies. I also have a tattoo of the mercenary group I was with on my left bicep. I have my trusty sword on my right side and my bow on my back. I wear tough leather boots that have a lot of dust on them no matter what. I also wear a long brown leather coat that looks like it was made for a man of larger size.

Quote:
What is your name? You can call me White Fox.

Where do you come from? That one there, a one Ronyo Storm.

And how old are you? Two and one half decades.

Right, well, what can you do? I'm fair with a quarter staff and well skilled in throwing knives. My staff is a simple wax wood staff white as natural wood can get. My throwing knives are simple with no indication of a guard to help avoid unwanted resistance in flight, but have a convenient hole in the small pommel to allow me the ability to attach a string or even a small rope when need be. This odd choice of weaponry has helped define my fighting style.

Wonderful! We could use more o' those. Tell me a bit about yourself. Much of my history is kept closely guarded for my own personal reasons, but I guess if we are to fight together then we must trust each other. Trust begins with a step and so I will take that step and confide what I feel will do for the question. I was born into a decent family with wealth enough to stay clear of most hardships and for a time my life was grand. I enjoyed many luxuries few children ever do and I do not regret any of it for it was my parents who made such a thing enjoyable not the lavishness of the event. However that life was taken from me one night after play. Highwaymen jumped our carriage and killed the driver with a volley of arrows. My father did his best to fight the bandits but he was never great with a sword and he soon feel to one of the robber's blades. My mother tried to make a break for it with me in tow but was killed with another rain of arrows to her back. The murders left me not seeing the need to kill a kid and speaking of not wanting the death of a child on their conscience.

I made my way to the local village and found guards who I told my story too. They sent a team of adventurers after the bandits who had just wandered into town. To this day I find it odd how a group of people just so happened to wonder into the village at that moment in time. I recall one being a warrior, one an archer, one a rogue, and one a white mage. It was like something out of a bard's tale spun about brave men and women crawling through dungeons and fighting dragons.

After the adventurers returned they said they had killed the bandits and each seemed to have something to say to the guards on the matter before they said their apologies to me for my lose and moved on. Those adventurers inspired me to greatness and I did everything I could to train hard so I could become like them, and maybe be able to do for someone else what they did for me.

Well I got my wish a few years later when I was about eighteen in years. I had used my inheritance to buy the best armor and weapons possible, I had trained for what I thought was long enough and well enough to become an able bodied adventurer. I set out on the road and found myself a village that had just been attacked by bandits. I felt it was my moment to shine and become the hero I wanted and find some measure of justice and vengeance in possible killing a few of the bandits for my parent's sake. I found the bandits all right, five of them to be correct, and when I attempted to take them in they just laughed at me and beat me within an inch of my life. They took my armor and weapons and left me bruised and humiliated.

My injuries we worst than I originally thought and likely I would have died right then and there, but seeing as I'm talking to you we know that not to be the case. I feel unconscious after the pain got the better of me and woke up with a fire keeping me warm and an woman sitting beside me reading a book. She told me how she found me and took me to the small settlement she lived in to get me patched up. The elder was a white mage and had helped mend many of my bruises and even a broken rib I didn't know I had, I say elder but she did not look the title by any means of the imagination. Now here comes one of the odder parts of my story if you can believe it. The settlement was comprised of only women, they had moved out here to get away from everything they felt wished them harm. The fact that they had saved me was a rare thing as they had rules about men.

Nothing like those stories of wild women only using men to mate and then killing them. They simply did their best to hide and stay out of sight from men as many of them had good reason to want to. Anyways I digress the point is the settlement was kind of like a little monk village really. The women trained and practiced in various martial and magical skills to help better defend themselves when they choose to leave the settlement. Seeing the dedication these women showed was something truly fantastic and I pleaded with them to teach me. It took a great deal of encouragement and time in the area to earn their trust and show them I had no ill intent. It took a while but it was all worth it in the end for the agreed to teach me and I began that same day.

The training was beyond anything I had experienced to that point. I spent days doing pushups and sit ups with rocks on my back or tied to my arms and legs. I ran for miles upon miles and beat my fists, feet, arms, shins, elbow, and knee into tree trunks and boulders until the bleed and grew numb. Also the beatings I took the day I made the mistake thinking the bathing spring was open for me. That one took some explaining even though it had been true mistake, and it also doubled my workout for the week but in the end it was all worth it. For once I was fit enough they began to train me with various weapons and I soon became skilled with the quarter staff and found I had a deft aim with throwing knives as well. The women showed me how to switch up my fighting styles based on subtle changes to my foot work, way I held my weapons, and something as simple as tying a string to one of my throwing knives.

They also taught me how to be stealthy and silent even in the brambles of the forest and among the branches of the tree tops. I learned how to disappear with the wind and reappear just as quickly and quietly. I began combing my skills and oddly enough had begun to earn the respect of many of the women and some told me I had a few eyes looking my way but I never pursued anything about it.

After years of training I wanted to find out how my skills held up in the real world and so I joined a group of the women on a mission to save several women from a cruel rich tyrant who was using the village girls as his own entertainment. I soon found out the manner and wealth the man was using was my parents and that I had been declared dead shortly after not returning from my try as an adventurer. The man now had taken the claim by trickery and either destroyed or sold everything of my youth and of my parents. I beat the tyrant almost to death until the women pulled me off him and calmed me down enough to allow us to leave with the girls.

Seeing such evil I knew I had to do something about it and being declared dead would only work in my favor. I had grown up over the years with the female warriors and in more than just my appearance but in my way of thinking and understanding of the world. I knew a man could only do so much but after reading a few tales about old heroes I began to see that people rally best around figure heads and symbols, and so I put away the boy I was and became something more. I took on persona I felt people could get behind and dawned a mask to hide who I truly was and to give evil an image to remember. I became the White Fox and from that day I have traveled from town to town looking for wrong doings to right and helping those who could not help themselves. Now I stand ready to help my country take on a villain greater than any I have yet face.

And how does that make you feel? What you will see and hear is the persona I have become. I have lived so long as the White Fox that I have only showed my true face to the women who trained me. Back then I was always smiling and loved to laugh with the women as they would tell stories of their own journeys and training experiences. Now I keep my emotions in check and allow myself to remained focus in case anything should pop up suddenly. My old personality can come out occasionally if I was to trust someone enough to relax around them, but my face you will never see. I have dedicated my life to stopping evil and I take a strong stance against those who would wrong others.

Now, forgive me, but I'm quite along in my years and eyes aren't what they could be. Describe yourself to me. My attire is all white with only dashes of color here and there. I wear a long white shirt and white pants under my gear. My custom made tunic is sleeveless but the ends go to the ground and have become tattered a bit over the years. A white triangular tabard fits over my tunic adding another layer and it too goes down to the ground with pieces torn and ragged from my missions. The tabard has a hood I always keep up and helps create the image my enemies see in their nightmares. I wear a simple mask that covers everything but my eyes to hide any features about me, and then there is my real mask. A white fox with green lining around the eyes and red streaks along the ears and across the checks.

White arm-guards with metal covered in white fabric, over white gloves, keep my arms safe and also hide I few throwing knives. My boots are the same in both the armor and the hidden blades tucked away for quick use. I wear a green sash with a black belt over it that stores many of my throwing daggers and the pieces of string and thin rope I occasionally use. As a finished touch of show I dawn a red scarf I let flap wildly in the wind. This is the image you will see fighting alongside you, this is the image that has saved people from hardship and suffering, this is the image that keeps those of foul deeds up at night, and this is the image that will strike fear in the hearts of the false king's soldiers.

Updates:
Check back regularly as I like to keep a good running report of things. All times are CST (2 hours ahead of West Coast, 1 hour behind East Coast).

5/21 12:36: Sorry for the late start, I forgot my friend's graduation was tonight and it threw off my schedule. That said, the opening post is on its way. We have 2 participants as of now, and could really use more. If you're looking for focused feedback on your roleplaying this is the place to be!

5/22 3:35: Opening post up, and we shall begin with just three players. Because of this, they are all automatically earning a bonus AP, putting my starters at 2 AP each. Also, I edited the second post to explain some of how I GM.
4:24: Updated a bunch of stuff: Magic, AP, basically a little bit of everything. Most important among them is Guild Maegistrum. Please be sure to read.

5/24 1:57: New character accepted! Julahc, played by Death by Kaiju.

5/25 17:12: New character accepted! Rasven, played by Critical Acclaim.

5/26 00:00: Added a new rule: Third-person perspective. I had come to take it for granted, but was recently reminded not everyone plays that way.

5/30 3:00: New character accepted! Jack Magnus, played by Insane In Yo Membrane. We also have a new APE. Lastly, I added a new rule: I will introduce all players, so as to avoid confusion.

6/1 2:50: New character accepted! Ida, played by Just Before An Eclipse. Sorry for the brief delay, but I will have a post up this evening.

6/2 2:01: My apologies on this delay, but new character accepted! Diane Condij played by Dread_Detective.

6/13 Sometime: Final character (for now) accepted! White Fox, played by Ronyo Storm.

Awesome Points:
How it's earned: Extra AP was awarded during the initial character creation phase. Throughout the roleplay I will also be posting a stipulation below, and it will have a deadline. Meet the requirements by the due date, and you have yourself 1 more AP. Of course, exceptional roleplaying will also garner bonus AP. Noticeable improvement may also be grounds for bonuses, as that is the goal of a Study Group.

How it's used: Whenever you wish you use AP, simply type the appropriate text in red. This could be for just about anything out of the ordinary: performing a feat of strength, rolling those double-sixes in a game of chance, finding a fantastic weapon or book at a cheap price, and just about anything else you can think of.
Example
Johnny was in a tight spot, cornered and with only his knife. In one final act of desperation he lunged low under his opponent's sword and rolled to safety.

That would have been worth 1 AP, which leads us to a common question:
How much is an AP worth?
Let's say you were ambushed, unarmed, and someone came from behind in PERFECT silence. 1 AP would be enough to get you out harm's way. 2 AP would be enough to cast magic to counter/defend (assuming you know magic). 3 AP would be enough to disarm your opponent despite the perfect surprise. 20 AP and you could catch his sword-arm with one hand, disarm him, insult his mother, put him on the ground, interrogate him for his boss's secret hideout, tie him up, and convince his best friend to join your cause- all while blindfolded. AP will be your best friend if used at the right times and applied in the right ways.

If you're uncertain how much an action will cost you, or don't know if you have enough feel free to PM me with the matter, or just make the post. If it costs more than you have, I'll simply tone down the matter.

Current Holdings:
Keynir: 3
DuskDash_DawnDash: 2
Lady Ratchetgirl11: 2
Death by Kaiju: 3
Critical Acclaim: 2
Insane In Yo Membrane: 2
Just Before An Eclipse: 2
Dread_Detective: 2
Ronyo Storm: 2

Current AP Earner (APE):
Starting Lineup: In 5 separate posts (posts must be a minimum of seven sentences in length to qualify) begin each sentence with a different word. This is to encourage the players to avoid repetitive writing (ie, He did this, then he did this. He said this, then saw that, and so on...). Using a contraction will NOT count toward a new word if the word has already been used. An example would be using "It" and "It's" or "I" and "I'm" or "They" and "They're." Due by 7/1
The Count:

Old APEs:
Opening APE: Find 5 words to which you don't know the definition (dictionary.com) and use them APPROPRIATELY in your posts. They do NOT all have to be in the same post. Be sure to UNDERLINE THEM so I know which ones they are. Completed by Keynir and Kaiju.

And Now Our Story Begins...

When all others had finally dismissed Guiles Greenbrook as a loon, three outstanding individuals approached him there in the Steaming Whiting inn. He offered them all a seat at his table which conveniently enough had seats for a quartet.

He smiled at them all in turn. "Well at least some folk still have their national pride. Warms my heart, it does." He took a deep breath that seemed to only fill him with more excitement. His eyes were alight, and practically gleaming despite the measly size of his "army." It didn't matter. Four was three more than he'd been just five minutes ago when he decided to start this revolution. Seemed like a pretty good rate. If it kept up he'd have something of a mercenary band in another hour.

"So here's my plan. We stay for the night. If you don't have the coin, I'll pay your fees. Consider it my down payment on your services. I'll harbor no disagreement.

"Also: first drink's on me, so make it a good one." While they all pondered their favorite alcohol, he summoned a very skeptical and nervous-looking barmaiden. "One round on me, whatever they want. I'll have the home-brew." The home-brew was a very pleasant ale, and a personal favorite of Guiles Greenbrook, a regular patron.

The first floor of the inn was more of a bar than a greeting room, and was treated more often to the former than the latter. Sixteen tables were arranged in a four by four grid across the room. Stairs up to the rooms crossed the left wall, and the kitchen tailed off to the right. Toward the back was the owning family's rooms. The whole family was part of the scene. Kids- even the nine-year old- were either serving or preparing food with their parents. It was quite the sight, really.

Perhaps even more interesting, though, were the customers. More than one struck a mental chord as the big, burly, brutish type, but everyone seemed very well mannered. More than one was a sailor and yet none were carousing obnoxiously or hounding what few young women were present- not even the maidens serving them. Several men were armed and yet there was nothing to indicate anyone intended to use one. That was the thing about the Steaming Whiting. Many a sailor, mercenary, or other vagabond or "rough" individual favored this particular inn for its laidback and easygoing atmosphere. Fights were a rarity, horndogs were scorned, and a good tale was the best way to free drinks- among the sailors in particular. They were prone to ignoring exaggerations of a whale's size if you could spin a story well enough.

"Well, in that case, I'll have a mug of your finest mead. If you don't have any, then i'll have what my friend here is having." Angelo knew that his childhood friend, a warrior named Rafe Ravel, would beat Angelo over the head with Angelo's own blade if he didn't at least ask for mead. "Well, now, I don't believe we've introduced ourselves. I'm Angelo, a Journeymage of White Magic. Now," Angelo said, looking to the others sitting at the table, "care to tell us who you are?"

"I'll have the weakest ale you have, water if nothing else."Siraon didn't care for alcohol in the least, but didn't want too look rude."My name is Siraon Howl, knight with black magic."He answered Angelo.
PostPosted: Sun May 22, 2011 12:58 pm

Now Raph finally met the Guiles he'd heard about before, his thoughts about a great warlord kind of imploded on him. Though he quickly waned his wonder, remembering he'd have to keep an open mind.

As they sat down at the table, he cheered up at the mention of a free drink. "I'd like some ale as well, any will do I suppose", he told the waitress with a slight smile in attempt to ease her nerves.

His attention shifted to the person now known as Angelo as he introduced himself. He hadn't heard of the term Journeymage before, but his imagination left him enough supply to ignore his questions. Then when he wanted to speak, the other guy was just a tad quicker. After he were done introducing, Raph quickly followed: "I'm Raph, an archer. But you might have guessed that by my apparel already."

Angelo smiled. "Well, if nothing else, the two of you are pleasant to talk to." He pulled a small, leather bound book from his pack and opened it, as if reading. "Siraon, you call your self a 'knight with black magic', but you didn't address yourself as 'Sir' Siraon, as any actual knight would. I'm going to take a wild guess and say one of your parents was a knight who taught you skill with their preferred weapon-perhaps a blade of sorts? As for you, Raph, you wear quite a bit of armor-I can see armguards and a light chainmail shirt from right here, and I'm going to assume you have some form of armor on your lower body. You want to protect yourself...for what reason? To protect others, perhaps? If I am correct, then am I also correct in guessing that you might just be a blue mage? Both of you, please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this." Angelo closed his book and placed it on the table in front of him-he had given that entire monologue while not even glancing up at the people he was questioning-one might even say he was more interrogating them. "These are all base assumptions, by the way."
PostPosted: Sun May 22, 2011 8:33 pm

The maiden smiled, silently agreeing with Angelo; this was a pleasant bunch, a direct contradiction to her presumptions. "Alright, so two home-brews, a Slagon for you, sir," she nodded toward Siraon, "And a mead." At the last she nodded toward Angelo. "I'll be right back." She made her way to the kitchen.

Meanwhile Guiles listened intently to the exchange amongst his first three recruits. Friendly, which was good, and it was clear that at least one of them had a solid set of smarts on him. Things were definitely starting off on the right foot!

((Starting off on the right foot, indeed! I see someone's jumping right into the game for some good ol' AP. Glad to see you take so quickly to the game. Both good words, but I must comment on your use of wane. Wane is used without an object. An example would be: "His wonder quickly waned, though, as he remembered to keep an open mind." You don't "wane" something, things "wane," if that helps. That said, both words still count. Three more to go, Keynir.

DuskDash. It's a good start with the character, but I have one request and couple suggestions. My request is that you reserve italics for thoughts only. Colors are welcome, but italics has a stern ruling in my book. My suggestions: Give us more inner monologue. Because your character intends on speaking so little, tell us what he's thinking: of others, his situation, the future, his surroundings... Actually, there's an easy way to remember. DOTS: Do, Observe, Think, Say. Be sure to incorporate all 4 parts into every post, and you'll see not only detail but depth improve in your writing and characters. This goes for everyone, myself included.

Rachetgirl: A strong start! You're already giving us a great glimpse into your character's personality, and in addition it gives us an easy way into introductions and getting to know the basics of one another. Keep it up, and don't forget about that bonus AP for the week.))

Raph was taken back by the waterfall of words and, sadly, right assumptions. It irked him he supposedly was this open to read, or that the guy took notes of him, or that he poked around in his life just like that! At the same time he felt challenged to try the same as a childish requital.
Though, not wanting to look like a foul stick-in-the-mud, he suppressed the urge and nodded. "That's quite right!" He said pretending to be cheerful. "Did you make these notes on us before? I wonder when you got the chance to do so, seeing you were reading them from that book. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen you before."
PostPosted: Mon May 23, 2011 7:51 pm

Angelo kept a smile on his face as he kept his hand on his book. The book was completely blank. It was only to throw people off, he guessed it all from people's mannerisms. Giles was a bit of an oddity. Angelo couldn't pin him down. But since he didn't want the others to know his skill, he resorted to one of his favorites dodges: "The book knows many things. It just might know more about you then you do."

Guiles's eyes lit up as Angelo made mention of the book's contents. A book that knows more of an individual than they themselves? Intriguing... "Hm, and what does it say of me?"

Just then the door opened and a very alien man made his entrance. His dress marked him a foreigner and his wounds and toughened skin declared him a warrior. He left little to the imagination, dressing only in baggy trousers and sandals, and draping a cloak over one shoulder. This man, Julahc, caught Greenbrooks's attention immediately and the latter moved to intercept the former before he could take but three steps into the room.

"Hello! Name's Guiles Greenbrook. You look quite the fighter, m'friend. Mind me asking your name?" His prior question to Angelo was already forgotten in the arrival of another potential recruit.
