without the consideration that there are children with mental problems and can't be watched every second and should not be blamed on parenting skills entirely. Called me an idiot about it after he states that children will loose self awareness during the development and say the leashes retards the children.

There are certain instances that leashes on children is a good thing, but if my kids are perfectly healthy, I wouldn't keep them on a leash. I wouldn't say that it's bad or lack of parenting, but I'd rather keep and eye on them than remove their freedom entirely. But then again, I came from a time where there was no leash for your kids. My parents never put me on a leash.

Some parents use leashes on their kids for safety reasons, it would limit them to wonder off freely, but it would protect them from falls. It would depend on the child and the environment. But the kid pointed out it will lower their self awareness and blablabla, but doesn't understand how kids are. Parent's aren't perfect and neither are the children. There are some stories where leashes actually saved a child's life.
Parents aren't bad if they don't use a leash or use a leash.

I would actually use one on my child if we went to a crowded place. Like the Zoo or a place that we dont know well. Its a safe thing and let the child have some independence with walking if it is a toddler but after the kid hits a certain age like 4 or 5 then the hold mom or dad's hand is prefer.

I was kept on a child leash and I turned out fine. My mom put me on a leash in really crowded places like baseball games or other sporting events.

My cousin's daughter, Lexi, is 3 years old and gets into EVERYTHING. Honestly, 100% legit, she knows how to work locks and keys and can open and lock doors. In stores where only one person is watching her, it only takes a few seconds for her to get into something. Basically a monkey backpack with the leash as the tail. She has no idea but is kept in control.

I dont see a problem with it,as long as theyre not on a leash 100% of the time, its better than them, running out into the road and getting hit by a car,I'm not saying at home,or at friends and families houses, but I would rather have my kid on a leash then be walking along in the grocery store, turn around, and have them be gone, and end up getting kid napped by someone, theyre a tool, plane and simple,I wonder how many kids could have been saved if there had been them long ago o.o

I don't really have much of an opinion them -- seeing a leashed kid in my area is like seeing a tiger roaming the streets, to be honest. (Minus the obvious danger factor. >.>)
Where I do see a lot of it, though, is on the ski slopes where I work winters. Like, the kid is skiing down the hill on a leash, and the parent is right behind them. Never turns out pretty, either -- if the kid falls, the parent can't really stop fast enough to not either hit or fall on the kid; if the parent falls, the kid usually gets yanked back. Plus the leash getting tangled up in equipment, getting tangled on the lift while they unload, etc. We generally advise people not to use them on the hills, but they do anyway.

Years ago, I only used a leash once with my almost 4 year old son, when we were planning on going to an art festival downtown. The yearly, 3-day festival is always packed with people, so to just be on the safe side, I improvised by connecting the dog's leash between his belt loops and my belt loops on our jeans. I felt the need to keep him safe and close by me as we walked around, and it worked like a charm as he was prone to wandering a bit at that age. 3nodding

My mum had one for my older brother with ADD (and I think he has some other similar problem, but I'm such a good sister that I don't even know xd ). She used it in crowded places. Better then having him run off into the crowds.

My sister would walk away when she was littler, if you'd only blink with your eyes.

That's the reason by my grandparents had her on a leash.

I think they were more common in the 80s because myself and my oldest brother both had one until we were old enough to understand the strangers are bad concept. But after giving them away between my brother and sister mom couldn't find them anymore. Ours were basically straps that went around our wrist with velcro

My mom kept me on one and it was like that, which kinda defeats the purpose because I remember undoing the velcro.

I had a stint on the leash as a kid after I nearly got skittled in the carpark after ignoring my mum's recall.

I actually liked the leash. LOL.

I read everyone's post and I'm surprised that most people are not so against the leash. xD

People compare leash on a child to dogs, abuse, neglect, lazyness and how it doesn't help the child be aware of the dangers and the parents will be too dependent on the leash. But they probably never experienced having a mischievous child.

If my mom had me on a leash I would probably never have gotten lost in crowds so much, I could have been kidnapped! When I was 3 or 4 years old I was close to running into the street, but I was picked up by some random dude on the street, he saved my life! I was lucky to be rescued by a good guy instead of one that plans to kidnap me. I was such a risk taker. After that experience I still haven't learn the dangers because I was too young. xD

I agree that the leash should be used in crowded environments or in environments where a child can get easily hurt. Leashes shouldn't be used all the time. o:
