The Black Wastes
User Image

One does not simply walk into the Barren South... They trudge and toil through it. Across the northernmost region of this dark, gloomy corner of the world, beneath the Umbral Mountain Range is an expanse of shattered land known as the Black Wastes. Much of outsider knowledge of the Southern Region is really described in this enormous stretch across the south, a barren land of black rocks, gray dust and gravel. The Water here is not safe to drink, as it must be thoroughly filtered by people within Tenepolis, a city lying in the heart of the Black Wastes. The size of these lands is nothing short of gargantuan, and as such is divided into sub-regions. The Black Wastes are then cut off by the Abyssal Plain, a region even deeper in the Southern Region that was once the site of the former civilizations of the Shadows, now so teeming with Demonic activity that neither Shadows nor Exiles plan on going anywhere near it... At least, not yet.

Sub-Regions:

Tenepolis: A City in the Black Wastes, Tenepolis was founded near the mountain range but closer to the center of what is called the Black Wastes by a collaboration of Shadows and Exiles. Since most of the region has little to no terrain changes, the mountains aside, most can see the city of Tenepolis and its winding, twisting, nightmarish towers from miles away.

The Umbral Mountains: The gateway between the Southern Region and, effectively, the rest of the world. No one can get into the South without having to pass through these mountains, either passing through the Shadow Passes (The Safest way to enter) or through the caves known only as the Tomb of the Exiled. The only absolutely direct path to Tenepolis goes through the tunnels of the Tomb of the Exiled... And most would prefer going through the Shadow Passes, which are further east and west and go through the Ashen Wings, but are nowhere near as horrifying as what lies beneath...

Tomb of the Exiled: The Tomb is a network of caverns within the Umbral Mountains fraught with dangers, including the sheer structure of the Tomb that winds and twists in and around itself, and the Demons dwelling within the depths where travelers may get lost... However, traveling through the Tomb of the Exiled does have a lure that draws people into them; Clean Water and enormous Enferantite Deposits. However, rumors among those who survive the trip through the Tomb speak of a grand, Demonic City hewn from the very stones of the deepest places of the Earth, and some speculation that the tunnels of the Tomb actually spread throughout the entirety of the Black Wastes, though neither have been confirmed as of yet... However, these rumors become more and more feasible each time someone prospecting for Enferantite in other regions of the Black Wastes ends up finding a deeper tunnel that is littered with the bones of lost travelers and exiles...

The Ebon Fields: In the southern region of the Black Wastes lies an area that is slightly less waste-like; offshoots of small plants grow sparsely in this area, as do scavenging animals that seem to be remnants of the time the Southern Region was teeming with life. Demonic sightings are most frequent in this part of the Black Wastes, as it borders the deathly Abyssal Plain. Unfortunately for the residents of the city of Tenepolis, the Ebon Fields are also the safest source of water they can retrieve... Though the water is poisonous and requires a great deal of refining after being in constant contact with rotting matter beneath the surface. Also, since Demon Sightings are most frequent here, it is only reasonable to conclude that it is here that the water pools are frequently watched over by the monsters, who attack people trying to gather the water from the area and dump the bodies into the water, as to ensure that they stay poisonous for consumption by mortals...

The Ashen Wings: On the Western and Eastern parts of the Black Wastes are enormous expanses of dust and gravel known to the locals as the Ashen Wings, as per their appearance in relativity to the rest of the Wastes. Typically, those who leave the mountain passes will enter the Ashen Wastes first, though there is very little there... Which leads to the death of numerous careless travelers or lost exiles who do not make their way to the city of Tenepolis. The Ashen Wings, however, have frequent windstorms, no living creatures, no plants and no water, making any trek through it a difficult one... Any traveler coming to Tenepolis must brave this harsh and unforgiving terrain.

((OOC: This region is to function as an area to actually perform tasks or events that will occur outside the City of Tenepolis, but have started in that plotline. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACTUALLY GO THROUGH THESE AREAS IN POSTS, BUT DO NOTE THAT YOUR CHARACTER WILL HAVE GONE THROUGH IT BY THE TIME THEY GET TO TENEPOLIS IF THEY ARE NOT SHADOWS. Be sure to make a note of it if your character and others are leaving the city limits, and always remember... Danger lurks in every corner of the Black Wastes. > : D ))

Thoughts I have. - Who could live in such a place? -
Strange feeling I have. - On edge. -
The location I stand at. - The Umbral mountains } currently by the entrance of the Tomb of the Exiled. -
Who I can tell is beside me. - Nothing that is worth saying. -

The over look of the land was dark. It was as if the place was covered in clouds of ashes. The forest wasn't plentiful at all. The slightest bit of green could be some thing poisonous if not that what barley anything worth having. The land seemed old and crusted with blood old bones and other such things. It was like walking into a nightmare but in reality. Mute pulled with cloak around him tight. Hiding his blonde hair from unwanted attention so he wasn't a beacon for murder. Although the place must of had more then murder in it.

Mute wondered. His only mission was to explore and see if anyone was in need of some help. He wanted to go to the great town called Tenepolis. He had mostly lived his life in the west lush forests. He paused after hearing a faint rustle sound. He looked to his right then to his left. Giving him a glance of vision to see if anything was there. As far as he could tell nothing was there. "..." He pause for a few more moments. Nothing happened. No sound. Just the thoughts that came to his head were the only mere things that kept the silence from waking.

Mute had traveled for what seemed like hours. His legs were in a slight burn and he rubbed his Jade eyes. The place was so intoxicating. It was as if slumber filled the air for him. When coming across a dark path it was a path into the mountains. He could feel the cave calling to him like a sweet melody. He peered into the cave in deep thought. It was dark and very damp. He could need some light. Mute took no note to his surroundings and knelt to the ground pulling his leather bag out from under his cloak to get a torch and some thing to light it with.

If this cave were a devil, it'd be a truly persuasive one... For it lured those who passed it with promises of quick passage to the other side, survival and riches beyond all comprehension... Of course, such was always at a price. At the front, on the left end of the cave mouth was a crudely-made wooden plank, nailed to the wall and appeared to be written in blood hastily... It read,

"THE TOMB"

Now, normally this would be fairly foreboding, except for the fact that on the other end, there was another sign... This one was much more ornately made, an evenly painted sign that was held on a pole just outside the right side of the the cave mouth... Written in impeccable script reads,

"<— This Way to Tenepolis
Come on in and watch your step!"

There was something very strange and unnerving about this place... When the Torch was lit, it appeared that the cave, while dank, was also fairly rocky... At least, they look like rocks from this distance. Upon closer inspection, they appear to be skulls... Skulls of numerous races from unnumbered races... It would seem that you are not the first to brave these caverns.

The sweet melody ringing in Mute's mind would be interrupted by a faint, almost unnoticeable but very, very real noise that vaguely resembled a mirthless chuckle from the unseen deep... This was the most direct route to the city of Tenepolis, but this place just has "Bad Vibe" written all over it...

Dare you proceed?

A paper nailed to the center of town square in Tenepolis:

***CURRENT REPORTS ON DEMONIC ACTIVITY IN THE REGION!***

Tenepolis: Reports from the esteemed Gray Militia have said that there's been a breach of security directly after the entrance of the Outsiders. Reports confirm at least one incursion, details as they become evident.

The Ashen Wings: All Quiet.

The Ebon Fields: Increasing attacks on water-gathering groups. Scouts report collapsed tunnels leading into massive caverns littered with corpses. This may be an explanation to how the Demons find our resource-gathering forces so quickly, though more investigation is required. Requesting more scouting in the region.

Tomb of the Exiled: It's been a month since the Scouting party went there... It's safe to say they're either lost or they've been killed by the Demons that are said to dwell within.

More reports as they develop. Take answers to requests to the Militia Tower.

Thoughts I have. - Is that a intention to scare people or help them? -
Strange feeling I have. - On edge. -
The location I stand at. - Tomb of the Exiled. -
Who I can tell is beside me. - Unknown laughter thing. -

Mute took in note of the signs. He didn't think much of it. Although stories of people entering and never to be seen again were always big about the place. He could only guess that people did not care to state those who lived through the tunnels. Only those who had died inside of them. Mute didn't hesitate he entered the into the darkness. The torch flickering every so often but he only guessed that it was the little bit of air that was able to rush from one side to the other.

Mute watched his step trying to not stir up any sound that might put him into danger. But the place was head to do so. Old bonds that cracked under your feet seemed to love to scream out in loud snapping sounds. Echoes within the dark cave seemed louder then any other one he had been in. But still with no hesitation Mute walked on into the cave. dripping sounds of water from the top of the cave hit to the floor. So far there was no sign of any danger yet. The runs of the tunnel made it hard to see what was a head of him. The darkness that surrounded him also didn't help him with it. He could heard faint scurries that sound start and stop. If he stopped in his tracks it seemed like silence filled the air more.

Chills set up Mute's back. He felt like he had been in here for days but not even an hour had gone by much less how far he traveled into the cave. He could feel it, it was as if the darkness was trying to swallow him whole. But still he walked on the twisty tunnel of the cave.

As the elf entered deeper into the Tomb, the only light became that of the torch flickering feebly amidst the surrounding darkness. More scurrying and crackling could be heard ahead in the other parts of the cave, as came whispers... Whispers from creatures in the dark, as though contemplating how to greet their new visitor... Snickering and giggling echoed throughout the cavern, followed swiftly by the scurrying away of all of the footsteps... They sounded like they were heading to Mute's left, down a passageway in the tombs...

Dead silence after several moments... What was going on, impossible to tell, even for someone with perfect eyesight. Suddenly, a shrill, terrified scream pierced through the darkness, footsteps patting against the rock floor and cracking a few bones. The voice cried out for aid, several more footsteps cracking in pursuit.

"HELP ME!" Within moments, the laughter of the creatures beforehand was now being preceded by an Elven lady in tattered, torn clothing... She was fairly attractive, fair skinned, blond haired and blue-eyed, though she was covered in the dirt, water and grime of the cavern. Following close behind were her heinous pursuers, a group of human-like demons crawling along the Cavern Walls and along the ceilings, adorned with skulls and brandishing swords, axes and maces made of some kind of strange black metal... They appeared ready to strike against the woman and whoever happened to be in their way...

Thoughts I have. - I have a bad feeling about this. -
Strange feeling I have. - On edge a bit angered. -
The location I stand at. - Tomb of the Exiled. -
Who I can tell is beside me. - Unknown laughter things and elven woman. -

The sound of shuffling put Mute on edge. But in the distance he could hear even more shuffling. It was getting louder. When the loud scream hit him it echoed in his mind. He had to do some thing. Mute pulled his cross bow out and when the woman came to view he could see what was chasing her. Mute shot at the beasts. But if it him them or not he wasn't sure. Mute quickly put his cross bow back. "Get behind me!" He yelled at the woman as he drew his sword.

Mute's heart was racing and he wasn't sure what to do. He had no time to plan out his attack or what to do. All he could do at the moment was hope for the best and not hesitate his moves. Mute's touch fell to the floor. It was still light but for how long was a question. He wasn't sure what to do. As the woman came closer he rushed him to make sure she was protected. He didn't want her to be harmed any more. He was not sure about his path that was so called 'chosen' for him. But non the less Mute braced himself and took a swing at the beast in hope to hit. And to keep the woman from harm.

The creatures started swinging their weapons at Mute, first the one with the mace, then the axe, and then the sword... However, as they attacked in succession, one couldn't help but notice just how clumsy these creatures were. Their attacks were predictable, slow, and the whole bit was just terribly cliché. Did this elven maiden REALLY need rescuing from THESE things? She must be pretty pathetic...

She looked the part, too, hiding behind Mute while looking at the creatures with abject fear... One could daresay she was a disgrace to Elfkind... Well, maybe she was just stuck down here for too long and couldn't bring herself to fight back anymore. Much speculation for later... The priority was clear; However weak and stupid they were, these Demons had to be disposed of immediately, as they were, if absolutely nothing else, they were persistent.

The arrows pierced each creature and they all suddenly turned into dust! ...Good Lord, this was so easy, it was almost sad... Maybe people who get lost in here die of boredom. The Elven maiden quivers behind Mute, making sure to stay close and looking around with a paranoid glint to her eyes, waiting for another batch of the monsters to come, though so far her fear is unwarranted. With your enemies vanquished, you can now proceed forward.

Thoughts I have. - Your joking right? -
Strange feeling I have. - Confused and a bit scared. -
The location I stand at. - Tomb of the Exiled. -
Who I can tell is beside me. - Elven woman. -

At the moment Mute wasn't sure how he would handle things. But with one hit they were gone. It seemed odd. It didn't seem like a threat. If that was what people were scared of in this place why would they worry. Or was it because they ran in packs? But there were no more behind them. Suddenly Mute got a bit scared of the elven woman. It was strange that these things were so easy to kill and yet she ran from them. He knew his sister, his sister was a knight. No woman could be totally helpless. Mute could only guess that if they were made from dust that they could be created from dust. That was his only guess but he wasn't sure about it. "Come." Mute said as he picked up the touch after placing his sword back into place.

Mute moved on. Stepping on the dust that was once those creatures. He couldn't understand why anyone would die in here. But if they did it could be for what lays deeper inside the tomb and now just here. He would have to see. But then again he was kinda hesitant to move on deeper. Taking in a deep breath of air Mute moved on still. Hopefully with the elven woman behind him. And Mute hoped for his life that this woman wasn't some creature that was acting in the form of a elven woman. He hoped... He hoped that she was just a woman.

As you delve deeper into the caverns, there was something unsettling about this region... There was a clear and present danger always watching, always near, but you couldn't place your finger on it... Whatever it was, the Elven woman noticed it too... Every click, every noise that sounded from a rock moving seemed to frighten her, each echo making her cringe... If she was indeed a creature playing the part of a woman, she did an excellent and convincing job of doing it... Why she was so pathetic could only be explained by the fact that she had been exiled in these caverns for far too long and lost her mind in the endless, terrible labyrinth of death.

As you move further into the cavern, the shadows seem to grow deeper and the tunnel winds more and the caverns get narrower... If you were attacked now, there wouldn't be many places to run... Bones begin crunching beneath your feet, though the sound of them clattering in the distance became clear... It was indistinct, as though the rattle of the bones came from all around. The Elven Maiden shuddered in place, her fingers moving back and forth... Why she did that was uncertain, perhaps just a strange habit...

Approaching further, seeing as you have no choice, you see a creature that seems to be made of several bones of the dead spliced together, carrying a mace adorned with a Demon Skull at its top... This one seemed like it'd be tougher than the little imp-like fiends you faced earlier. Prepare yourself!

Sefas Minos
Alchemist
Location: Surrounding area of Tenepolis, En Route to the Ebon Fields

Sefas walked outside the gates of Tenepolis, the Militia permitting him and those with him passage into the outside area of Tenepolis... The Black Wastes extended for miles around, the Ebon Fields lying to the south... With their appearance, the name became very appropriate; the ground around that area to the south was distinctly darker than the rest of the area, and one with a keen and perceptive eye could tell that it actually showed signs of dampness. The walk to the Ebon Fields couldn't be much more than a few miles. The map could direct them to the collapsed tunnels... The land appeared to be deceptively empty, as it just extended in flat plains as far as the eye could see, and what the eye could see was very little.

Sefas could hardly fathom how strange this land is... He stared down the endless flat of black under a bleak, gloomy sky. He looked back to his new-found companions and nodded slowly.

"Looks like it's down that way... We should get going." He kept his left hand on one of the vials on the belt on his chest, clutching it like a throwing dagger or a dart... He seemed to be very ready for battle, despite how strange his choice in armament was... He seemed to be able to protect himself, though he looked upon the others of his group... Shinobi was the one who obviously looked the most battle-hardened. He wasn't sure about miss Neysa or the white-haired fellow, but it would be a matter of time soon enough when they knew just how much they can hold their own.

Your Prayers are heard
Outside Tenepolis
---------------------------

Everything seemed so dark and dreary outside the city. Kiyoshi now knew why they were called the Black wastes. He looked around, trying his best to take in the environment, but it was too overwhelming. Gripping his spear in his left hand, thought about what they would run into. At the moment, nothing seemed dangerous at all. Kiyoshi started to worry. It was obvious that there was something out there. The fact that it was so well hidden meant that even if Kiyoshi tried to be ready for it, any and all attacks would be a complete surprise.

The thought of a surprise attack brought Kiyoshi's attention to another problem. His right arm was still close to useless. With the damage it had sustained, he was unsure if he could accomplish anything. He was sure that nobody would try to protect him if he wasn't able to keep himself alive. Even is somebody decide that he was worth thier time, would they be able to help out somebody else while staying alive themselves? Kiyoshi didn't want to think about it. Even just agreeing to something like this made him feel awful. It was times like these that made Kiyoshi wish he took the rude way out.

It was a vantage point, in his mind. He'd traveled this way yesterday, the the Umbral Mountains, where his clan had once thrived.

His Ninjato was a warning to most that he was armed. But, he still had his main weapons, his Kama with the chains to make them Kusarigama, and his throwing knives. He'd prepared to use them, to defend the ground since the moment he got outside the gates with them. His eye looking upon Kiyoshi's back, he wondered about the injuries he sustained. Would he need treatment? Shinobi had packed some herbs for such an occasion..
