Mere days ago Maion rescued a basket from an overflowing river, it was trapped inside the roots of a uprooted tree during a storm. A little bear called spike fought with all his might to save the precious cargo and had even been willing to sacrifice his own life for it.

Maion was forced to summon the Ocean to his aid to save three innocent lives (Pele, Spike and Elijah) he then carried them all to safety within the Miakoda herd before setting off to find the baskets parents.

The storm had become wild before nightfall, wiping away all clues of the baskets origin, and although he looked high and low Maion hadn't found anything or anyone -let alone the baskets parents. The basket was officially an orphan.

Maion watched as Elijah curled up around the basket, ever since he had brought the little basket home he had noticed the bear -which he had learnt was called Spike- and his little fox refused to leave its side. He often got to impression that they were trying to make sure it was warm and safe, especially after the ordeal it had gone through mere days earlier. Maion was only thankful that the little one was unlikely to remember much, maybe the sensation of cold water and the roar of the wind... but beyond that very little

He turned to his mate, nuzzling her neck affectionatly after a long day of searching. The storm was gone now but most of the creatures remained in hiding, he hadn't found any clues as to the parents of the basket... or why the small creature had been in the roots of a tree in the first place. Part of Maion suspected that perhaps it was the parents way of abandoning the basket, or maybe they had tried to keep it safe from the storm? He knew it was unlikely they could have ever predicted what had happened. "Nothing." He said at last, he hated the feeling of failure, it left a horrible taste in his mouth. "I couldn't find any signs of... well, anything. Small animals perhaps but no one that could be considered the parents of this little basket."

He paused, looking at the basket... what would become of it now?

Sengdroma had been hopeing for the sake of the basket that Maion would be able to find its parents. She wasn't happy with the idea that a parent would leave their foal behind for whatever reason.... She looked over to Elijah and the bear with a smile, they seemed to be so content wrapped around the wicker.

"You've tried, Maion. There is nothing more we can do as far as finding its parents.... Maybe one day they will return." she leaned into her mate with a deep sigh. "I can't imagine the reason a parent would leave behind their baby..." she shook her head slightly, her heart breaking for the poor foal that lie inside that basket, so innocent.

Spike had been so exhausted that he hadn't managed much more than sleeping curled around the basket for the last few days. But now his stomach growled almost loud enough to wonder if there wasn't another bear lurking in there.

Still a little clumsy with sleep, Spike lumbers up onto his paws. Looking around for the first time, he notices they are near a small lake. And while he could do without more water for quite a while, maybe the lake had fish. And Spike likes a good fresh fish.

Then he noticed that, other than the sleeping Elijah, there were others watching over the basket. His hunger forgotten for a moment, Spike blinks at the Angenicorn stallion who had rescued them and the green and blue mare beside him.

Realizing he hadn't seen the stallion since the incident in the river, Spike knows he should thank the large Soquili. Moving slowly he approaches the pair. Stopping out of easy hoof range but within polite speaking range, Spike performs something that might have been intended as a bow. If that was the intent, he isn't very good at bowing.

"Spike happy basket okay, Spike thank you for basket saving." Spike smiled at the Soquili and sat, waiting for their response.

What only Elijah might have noticed was that the basket started humming again shortly after Spike moved away. It was very soft and barely noticeable right now, but it was defiantly humming. It was almost as though the little one it the basket had been awakened by the sudden lack of warmth on that side and was 'singing' itself back to sleep.

Maion welcomed the weight of Sengdroma, she was such a small thing in comparison to his giant size but she fit him perfectly. Like ying and yang, they completed each other. He was the Moon and she was the Sun, and just like the real Moon and Sun Maion knew that without Sengdroma he would no longer shine, he was his very light. He smiled at that but felt a sudden sadness as he turned his attention yet again to the basket.

"I do not know, nor do I know if they left it or tried to protect it from the storm. Either way I can find no sign of them." A failure that hurt Maion, no basket should enter the world without the loving embrace of it's parents.... and although Maion had not been their for his own children's birth he knew that his mate Sengdroma had, perhaps even his friend Sofiel. He hesitated for a moment, wondering and imagining every possibility that could be the baskets future... but every time he considered the basket growing up alone his determination grew. This basket wouldn't grow up on its own... not if he could help it, already he predicted his mates answer but still he asked; "Would you consider adopting the child as our own?"

Maion raised an eyebrow at the sudden noise of the bears stomach and barely resisted a chuckle, not because he found the sound funny in a childish way but instead because the bear seemed just as startled by the noise.. as if it was the first time he had ever heard -perhaps it was. He had already noticed the child like nature of the bear, and as he spoke Maion saw it yet again. "I am forever in you debt Spike," Maion began in all sincerity, "Without you I fear the basket and my dear friend Elijah would have been lost. An outcome that is unacceptable." He offered the creature a smile before hearing the growl of his stomach once more, this time he failed to resist his chuckle and took it as an excuse to encourage the brave little warrior to hunt for food. "I think you have earned your dinner."

Still leaning against her mate, Sengdroma listened to his thoughts. She was just amazed that there were no signs...at all. She was about to answer just as the little bear started moving. She lifted her head and righted herself so that she could address the bear more formally.

"You are very brave, Spike. This little one is blessed to have you guarding it." she offered him a smile. She would have nuzzled the creatures cheek had he not taken up so far from them.

She paused for a moment, then looked to Maion and back to Spike.

"Spike, Maion has just asked if I'd like to adopt your basket to care for it... and I would," she beamed proudly, "Would you and your little one like to become part of our family?"

"Spike and Pele' basket have new family? Family good, Pele' basket need new family, mean river eat Auri basket and Basket Momma. Spike like family too, family good. Spike eat now." That settled, he got up and started moving towards the lake and the hope of fish.

Spike didn't really understand interpersonal relationships. He knew family was good and that the basket needed help and help was good so family must be help and that was good. Beyond that, the grumbling in his stomach was much louder than any thoughts he might have managed to chew through.

The basket's humming started to get a little louder and now it was . . . vibrating? No, wait, rocking? But rhythmically, as though the little one inside the basket was trying to dance. It didn't seem like the moment of a basket about to open, but it was defiantly doing something.

The fact that Sengdroma had asked the bear brought a smile to Maion's face, after all it was not their place to simply claim rights to the basket -not when it obviously already had a protector of sorts, still he was pleased further when the little bear rambled about family being good and accepting their offer. "Pele?" He repeated, looking at Sengdroma with a curious yet sad expression, the basket had a name.... and the reason why he had found no sign of it's parents was because their mother had drowned in the same river that had nearly claimed it... and his or her brother or sister had also been claimed. It was a sad thought indeed, one that caused Maion to close his eyes and say a little pray. The river had lead to the Ocean so it was likely they had been swept out to see, he would say a pray for them next time he visited the Ocean, a pray to lay their souls to rest and to tell the mother she could move on -that he and his mate would forever guard the child that had not followed her to the watery grave. He fell silent, knowing his mate would understand.

Elijah stirred slightly at the soft humming and now the vibrating, she had been sure she heard the noise before. Placing her ear to the basket she realised it was indeed coming from what ever was inside. That made her smile, at least it was safe. "I think we have a dancer on our paws!" She chirped as she curled up on top of the basket and let the soothing vibrations thunder through her little body.

Sengdroma's smile faded as Spike spoke of the mother and other basket that had not survived. On one side, she was glad that the mother had not just abandoned this child, but she was terribly saddened that this situation came at the loss of not one, but two other lives. She watched as Spike walked off to find food.

"Pele..." she repeated. She noted that Maion had fallen silent, she knew that his heart would be burdened by the facts that just came to life. She would give him a moment. She moved to her feet and got closer to the basket.

As she approached it, Elijah was making her way on top, Sengdroma smiled and laughed. Elijah had such funny antics sometimes. She lowered her head and whispered into the basket.

"Little Pele, you are safe. I will give my life to protect you as though you were my own," she gave the wicker casing a gentle kiss before laying down next to it. It was now her main concern to protect whatever secret this basket held.

Spike was completely unaware of the melancholy his words had brought as he reached the edge of the lake. Peering for a moment into the clear waters, he could see the silvery darting of fish and his mouth watered.

No matter that he was slow of thought, catching fish was one thing Spike was quite capable of doing well. He waded into the shallow waters and held himself very still. The fish had scattered when he entered the water, but if he stayed still they would forget that the strange fur and rock creature wasn't a normal part of their world and soon come back to where he was waiting.

Spike's stomach rumbled again, but he ignored it, he would be eating soon.

As if it heard Sengdroma's words, though more likely it simply felt the new warmth of her body against it's side, the humming of the basket grew louder. The sound was still less than musical, though it seemed to be made of two tone, though rather flat in quality. And the movement of the basket as it rocked matched the change in note from the humming. Perhaps it understood that it was safe now.

Maion found his composure, hearing of a mother and a child lost made him remember things that were best left forgotten. The first insident he had found himself in upon leaving the safety of his foalhood cave had been a mother being attacked by a skinwalker while trying to save her three foals.... Maion had been arrogant and after the battle was done, found lacking. He had taken a hit to his legs, the life of the mother had been lost and the skinwalker was only scared back not destroyed.... lacking. The discovery had deverstated him, the words of his mother had vibrated around in his head again and again but no comfort came from them. Realising his weakness and lack of strength he took the three foals to a friend so they would be care for properly. After that he had started to train, started to hunt and soon became consumed with destroyed the vial race he had been sure destroyed his family as well as the mother he had failed to protect. The truth was different..... but that was another story.

Sengdroma had been the only thing that had broken him from his quest of darkness and blood, the light... his light. She helped him accept his sister Kimi, though after her attempt to destroy his herd and family his thoughts towards her were strained at best....

He turned to look at his mate cradle the basket, once again reminded that he had never got to see his own children as baskets.... what would it have been like?

With a shake of his head and a wave of his mightly locks of hair he removed the thoughts. He could not change the past only grow from them... perhaps in this basket he would find a sliver of peace and redemption?

He walked towards his mate and settled down behind her, his head resting softly on his back as he took in the sight of her and the freshly adopted basket being cradled by Elijah. Without really thinking about it he asked; "Have you ever thought about us having more children?"

Not knowing of the thoughts going on inside his head, Sengdroma just smiled at him as she watched him come take his place next to her. Again, she reclined back, leaning into him as he leaned forward resting on her back.

His question caught her quite off guard. Though she had thought of more children, she had not expected Maion to want more so soon. She wouldn't deny the fact that missed having foals of her own running around, but the thought of the actually pregnancy again did not flatter her. She turned her head so that she could gently nuzzle his cheek before resting back against him. "I have thought of it often..." her voice faded for a moment, "I just wasn't sure when would be the proper time to tell you." They had been going through so much lately within the herd.

As she fell silent, Sengdroma noted the humming coming from the basket she had curled around. It had started moving slightly, though she was unsure why. She smiled and lowered her head to the ground next to it as she spoke to both the foal within and her mate, "Perhaps this is our blessing to tide us over until the time comes again for us,"

Spike's still waiting paid off as soon several little fish were swimming around his legs. Still he waited. A little fish would barely make a dent in his hunger. Slowly, darting in then swimming back out, the larger fish returned. Still Spike waited. As the fish began exploring him, darting forward to mouth at bits of debris caught on his legs, Spike saw the fish he wanted.

In one great and swift motion, his paw darted out and swatted a fish. Something as clumsy as Spike shouldn't be able to move that fast, not to mention something that seemed to be wearing rocks around it's torso and front legs. But move swift he did. The large silver fish didn't notice in time and was clubbed, stunned into immobility. The other fish scattered, some even jumping into the air to avoid the suddenly deadly bear.

With silent efficiency Spike leaned down and snagged the fish in powerful jaws. It flopped in his mouth, feeble but trying to escape. Teeth sunk into the fish, Spike wasn't letting go of his catch. Lumbering up out of the lake, water dripping from him, Spike found a patch of deep grass to lounge upon. Dropping the fish, he watched it flop about for a moment before pinning it with a large paw. "Thank you fish for dinner." He rumbled softly at the fish before mercifully biting off it's head. Ending it's suffering and making a tasty first bite.

The basket was warm, surrounded by bodies that breathed and hearts that beat. It could hear murmurs from outside, sounds it didn't understand. Lulled by the comfort surrounding it, the humming faded away and the rocking stilled as the little one inside again found sleep.

Maion smiled at his mates words... she had been thinking of children too? He wished she would have told him sooner, but he understood why she hadn't. Things had been busy and they were still trying to ensure no one dared challenge them, so far no one had... but perhaps that was because they had shown their worthiness time and time again. They had protected the Miakoda herd, led them straight, found a fruitful and bountiful safehaven for them to live.... but Maion wasn't foolish enough to think they had done it alone -oh no, without their herdmates the herd had no strength... what use were orders if there was no one to follow. Yet, the fact that his herdmates, friends and family members alike had followed his orders without hesitation made him understand the true weight of leadership of power... it would be so easy to abuse it, to use it for his own gain.... but he had no intention of doing that. It would be an insult to the very soquili that he wanted to protect and keep safe.

As he watched Sengdroma whisper sweet nothings to the basket, and the delicate smile lit up her face making her features all the more beautiful he knew what his purpose was. To stay strong... for THEM! For all of them. Including his new child, this delicate little basket that had already been through so much.... Maion vowed he would make sure the little one was taught of it's mothers bravery, the more he thought about the situation the more he came to the conclusion that the basket had been smuggled into the roots in an attempt to save it... it's blood mother having given the ultimate sacrifice and saved it's life. He would take the little one to the Ocean.... find peace.

But that wouldn't be until they could understand it, until then Maion and his mate would care for the little one as if it was of their own flesh and blood. He smiled, every day his family seemed to be growing, seemed to be gaining strength.... he couldn't help but wonder what suprises lay inside the precious little gift. "Yes," he said at last, "I think you're right about that...."

His attention turned to the bear and another smile crossed his lips, it seemed even he was finding his place here. It made Maion glad.
