Your Mission:

To decide/argue about which of the characters in Final Fantasy 7 is the LEAST cliched and/or stereotypical. This means that I'd like you to find out, with your own reasons (write down the reasons, please) which character in FF7 is the MOST unique in as many aspects as possible.
(I'm going to limit this to the main characters.)

Some basic stereotypes about each character:

Cloud: The amnesiac, mentally-flogged character. Supposedly uber-strong, but obviously not.

Aeris: The "love-at-first-sight" cliche, the flowergirl "delicate-ness" of her as well as the idea that she is also a healer.

Tifa: The childhood best friend with a love interest in the main character. (Is one of my friend's pet peeves [ the situation, not the character])

Red 13: The anti-father character who then later finds out how much of a hero hsi father was. Used in MANY games, and yet STILL thought to be original.

Barret: Big, black, tough-as-nails. He's the biggest guy in the game, with the BIGGEST guns. He gets angry very easily and is a radical-extremist.

Vincent: The very depressed/depressing antihero. He seems to blame everything on himself and has "unlocked potential" (Meaning Chaos) [My personal favorite character, yet alas, highly cliched.]

Yuffie: Stinking... little... thief. She's a ninja... a "revamped" ninja, meaning no traditional ninja stuff(whoop-de-freakin'-doo). She also does everythign "for her town" and then has a "change of heart".

Cait Sith: A spy who has a change of heart.

Cid: The trash-talkin' pilot/astronaut. Chain smoker with his own set of problems.

PLEASE NOTE: The poll asks which is THE MOST stereotypical, whereas the script asks which is THE LEAST. This is intentional. Please give a reason pertaining to your vote as well as a reasoning towards your answer to the script-question.

I guess I'll get started.

I voted Tifa because I think she's the most stereotypcial... I mean, c'mon! She's the childhood love-interest with the body of a goddess... +2.

I think that Cait Sith is the least stereotypcial, as he's a walking toy, and while he's mechanized, it's still pretty different from everything else.

in my opinion barret is by far the most cliched character in the game (and racialy so, oh no!)

but by far the most unique would be cait sith the big a** walking toy, who is realy a spy not seen that one before, but unfortunetly he sucks a** major time (alittle of topic but meh).

Vincent would be the most sterotypicial character, and Aeries being the goody good. Yuffie would be the least, she's the young BRAT, her or Cloud....because he had too many perosnalities thorught the game.We don't have many of those characters in the games as like a good guy person.... But they're all pretty sterotypical....

I think Barret is the most stereotypical and cliche character. There always has to be a racial stereotype somewhere. gonk I think the least cliched characters were Red XIII and Cait Sith, probably.

I know he is not on the list but Sephiroth is the most cliche character. The good guy how is pretty much invincible turns bad and the one person how can stop him is the person who was under his command and was really weak at the time. That has been done a million times.

I think Cloud is the most stereotyped because he's the main character, big and strong, cool looking sword, with lots of problems.

The least stereotyped would be Cait Sith because, lets face it, who expects a walking-talking cat looking thing to be bugging you throughout a game only to turn out to be a part of an evil organization that you're fighting against?

Okay, just because I'm feeling a little antithesis at the moment.

Barret isn't all that stereotype, he's big, black, and has a gun, but at least he isn't a criminal (they try to make him look like one... but -errr- on the ground of sounding racist, who doesn't try making black people look like criminal? Even rappers and crap make themselves look like criminals, at most he was a terrorist... and in that regard at least he wasn't arabic or islamic (which would make him a stereotypical terrorist.)

Aeris... errr... gonna skip this one.

Vincent, he isn't REALLY goth, he's just a depressed marksman with a vengeance. His cliche is more of a woeful character who seeks revenge than a "woe-is-me" "my life is terrible" Goth.

Cloud... where to begin? Multiple personalities - we could begin there, or the fact that (despite the fact that someone here specifically said that he's the leader-type who is strong enough to solve anything) he wasn't really all that strong until later on, in the end. I believe his strength came from a determination to not let Tifa down, as well as yearning for Aeris' revenge, because if you look at who surrounds him, namely a 200+ pound guy with a gun for an arm, an assassin who can transform into a host of foul creatures, a girl who can call on the heavens ot kill things, a chick who can kick a** and has a rack that could stop traffic(had to be said) as well as a multitude of other characters for support, he isn't really all that strong, maybe his close proximity to Sephiroth so long made him stronger, like some sort of a reverse radiation poisoning.

Sephiroth isn't all that cliche, I mean, sure if you look on the surface (or just dont' know all too much about the game) he seems like the nearly invincible good-guy who's gone bad. But if you look at him, and pay more attention to the storyline, he actually has some good points to him. For instance: Whos' really in control, in the partnership? Jenova? Or Sephi? Because if you look at it, Sephiroth runs away from you until the end, constantly sending Jenova after you to "deal with you". Does this mean he's in control? Of course not. If you notice the only time he's a problem is when he MELDS with Jenova, and after those two rounds you obliterate him in a one-on-one between Cloud and him, I'd ahve to say Jenova was in control. Jenova was the stronger, manipulating Sephi as he could (obviously) move about the human world more easily, and granting him her own strength when she needed to. The final fight against Jenova is when you fight Safer Sephiroth, the One Winged Angel, not earlier, on the block-arena just outside the crater's heart.

...yeah, sorry about the rant, I just love the conflict between Cloud and Sephiroth, it's a HUGE cliche in SOOOOOOO many ways, most of which most people dont' notice.

Okay AERITH is the biggest freakin' overused stereotype EVER. She (for lack of a better term) is a Mary Sue!!! I mean, she's a flower girl who just HAPPENS to be an Ancient AND she was dating a 1st class Solider!!! That just pisses me off. /rant

As for least stereotypical, I'd have to go with Reno. Purely because he takes the attitude of a stereotypical Irishman, but he works basically for the mafia. I mean, who's ever heard of an Irish hit man? That my friend is pure unique genius. Not to mention, he is the only guy I can think of that looks good in a Mullet.

Reno has a mullet? Woo... I've never noticed. Anyways, I don't see how Aerith is a Mary Sue, she dated a 1st Class Soldier mainly due to the fact that she was an ancient, and she isn't the one who solves absolutely EVERYTHING, nor does every guy in the game want her. Mary Sue's are perfect in more than just physical respects, you know what I mean? But everyone IS entitled to their own opinion.

Boy,you guys being mean to Aeris!! crying Yes,she sweet and gentle, but she remind me of another charater-Schala...I like Aeris is because she remind of me what in all of us-church people... sweatdrop

Aeris was partially stereotypical, in the fact that she steers the main character away from his life time friend. But, if you really think about it, an innocent flower girl growing up in the middle of Midgar, you gotta wonder how she grew up the way she did. She did what she had to in order to save the planet, which any character with a conscience would have done. She isn't a Mary Sue, in the fact that she didn't have ultimate powers that would stop Meteor, the only thing she could do, she did. And it cost her.

Anyway, I would say that the most stereotypical is Vincent. Cummon, who hasn't seen the dark and mysterious girl magnet with unleashing power? Plus, the red coat and gun!!! How many times has that been used!?!? I'll tell you! Alucard, Vincent, Vash, Dante! Bam! There you are.

I think Barret is the most cliched. He is the big badass with a short fuse. I think we have all seen that in enough games.

I think Red XIII was the least steriotypical. A very unique character which brought a lot of insight into the game.
