Tobias's diary is a well made, leather bound book. The front has the image of the talisman he was given, a large eye with various colors. Inside, the handwriting is small, and appears to be neat until it's being read. It's clear the writer has a hard time forming letters with a pencil or pen.

Greek form of TOBIAH. This is the name of the hero of the apocryphal Book of Tobit in many English versions of the Old Testament. It relates how Tobias, with the help of the archangel Raphael, is able to drive away a demon who has been plaguing Sarah, who subsequently becomes his wife. This story was popular in the Middle Ages, and the name came into occasional use in parts of Europe at that time. In England it became common after the Protestant Reformation.

He's a blank slate, but many of his former habits still remain. He still doesn't like to talk, and can be very testy and demanding of others. He does not remember his parents, but he does know that they were very rich and he will never want for anything.]

Melinda noticed that a good deal of the families they associate with were getting children. Whether they were adopted or born into the family, the fact of the matter is that they had children and she did not. And so she begged her husband to let her adopt a child from the Academy, since giving birth would just give her stretch marks and make her fat. And so they got Tobias. She goes through phases of caring for him, where she'll read to him, teach him to paint and do all sorts of motherly things, and then there are the times when she wants nothing to do with him at all. When Myrtle first came to work for the Black family, she was simply a maid that served tea and cleaned the place up a bit. Eventually Edgar decided he wanted a farm, and so he bought up some land, moved the house and then told her that in addition to serving them, she now had to help out with the animals. She grudgingly went along with it, since she needed a job. And then Tobias was adopted. She didn't mind him at first, since Melinda cared for him, but then one day he was dumped on her lap. The child then proceeded to make a terrible mess all over the place, and she was scolded for it. Since then, Myrtle has resented Tobias's existence.

Her family is a farming family, but in order to bring money in she applied to be a maid. She doesn't work very often though.

However, he doesn't approve of Tobias. One, because he's adopted, and two, because he's not human. He keeps quiet about it though, and simply ignores Tobias's existence. He also dislikes Felicia, as she is too loud and outspoken, and only encourages Tobias to be a bother.
