What is infinity and what does that have to do with the world?

But what of the finite aspects? Infinity is still finite, minus one. A decent answer, just not quite what I was looking for.

On that note, what do you consider infinite? You claim everything is infinite, but how? Why?

Infinity is... umm.. darkness in outer space? time? the existence of matter? the existence of energy?

To some people, yes, but what does it have to do with the World?

Infinity is without a beginning or ending. It's an idea that may not even apply to time or space, because those both probably began with the Big Bang. Infinity probably lies outside those...the only way I can think of it applying to the world, is as a Christian I believe in God and that He exists in infinity, and that by being Saved, we're allowed into that existence after death.

Infinity probably has more in common with zero then with any number in between, but I'm not sure how to explain that.

The set of natural numbers {1,2,3} is a finite set. Or, the set of humans on the earth at one moment in time. An infinite set is a set thats subsets are numerically equal to the set. Think of the set of natural numbers and then the subsets even and odd numbers, they all are numerically equivalent

My friend Charlie says (somewhat apologetically, I must note) that both infinity and finiteness are "both illusions, constructs of *a* way to perceive the universe."

Well, one might ask him, perhaps half-jokingly: are these illusions finite ...or infinite? Charlie's relativism on this matter, echoing as it does a post-modernist attitude towards theory/world, must face the task of explaining why nothing else exists in reality except we (body? mind? both?) and our grand illusions and constructs? Or are we too illusions and constructs of some other mind (God's, perhaps?)? And why and for what purpose do we create these illusions and construct these grand theories of the world? Entertainment? Moreover, how come half these theories we construct as illusions turn out to be so successful in reshaping the world? And how do post-modernist thinkers explain the fact that when we look for a fictional entity (character in a fiction; pick your favorite) none is to be found (except in books, etc.,), but when I look for Charlie, he is just a click, a trip, or a phone call away?

On another note. As I just pointed out, a finite collection is easy to conjure: just pick three things and count them. If they exist, then a finite collection exist. As for the *finite set* of the three things you collected, that is a different matter. Since sets are not identical to their members, although its members are essential for the identity of any set, it does not follow that sets existence merely because we can collect things into groups. The same with infinity. The concept of infinity can be defined mathematically in a variety of different ways, all cogent. But merely because we can define a concept it does not mean that there is anything that corresponds to our definition (for those with some knowledge of these matters: this issue pertains to Frege's Unrestricted Comprehension axiom and Russell's paradox). So while we can define both concepts, it does not follow that finite sets or infinite sets actually exist.

I think of it as the number line without restrictions. You can run forwards or backwards until you get to numbers so large you have trouble comprehending them, but there's always one more. And when you get to that one, there's another, and so on.

Infinity is what you percieve it to be.
For me, it could be a never ending road.
For you, it could be the number you try and count to until you die, but never reach.
Get my meaning?

That's the closest to what I'm searching for... let's feed off of it.. any takers?

Infinite is without measure. And if you are searching for a specific answer; one with more of a metaphysical answer or a personal "we can all define our own world," answer. Well science goes out the window on that one.

I do not have an answer right now as to what infinity has to do with the world, but I do have an answer to what infinity is...

I remember a fairy tale sort of story I read some years back, in which there was some sort of a contest between some person/thing and a boy, to see who could come up with the highest number. They're contest never ended, because whenever the person/thing would say a number, the boy would reply, "And one more."

That is what I would say infinity is. Finite is a concept of things as being able to 'put them in a box'; you can collect them, count them, and be done with them. The concept of something being infinite is when you try to collect it and count it and put it in that box, but every time someone whispers over your shoulder "and one more."

Infinity is like - If the earth didn't exist, there'd still be outer space. If outerspace didn't exist, then there would be a big gray canvas of nothingness (as I imagine it). If that wasn't there....? Haha, kind of fun to think about.

Or, if you got in a spaceship and kept going... where would it end? or does it never end?
(Is it like earth - the end is also the beginning? Like if outer space was spherical?)
Then could you go up, and end up where you started?
Then there would still be some space ABOVE the sphere of outer space.
Could THAT be like a sphere too, you go up, and come back where you started?
