I've been wondering lately about adopting pets from animal shelters. It's generally agreed to be a good thing, of course, that's not my question. And I'm not looking for a pet at the moment (my dorms don't allow it. sad ) but I wanted to get all of your opinions. Where is the best place to adopt from?

I have often heard people say that although they support no-kill shelters, they won't adopt from them because they want to save the animals from the kill shelters. This makes sense to me. But if we don't support the no-kill shelters, how will they be able to continue to operate? If we adopt only from the kill shelters, the no-kill shelters will eventually overflow with unwanted pets and will be given no choice but to humanely destroy them. Thus, defeating the purpose of the no-kill shelter. But, if we only adopt from no-kill shelters, then all of the animals at the kill shelters will meet the same demise that we just saved the no-kill animals from.
Quite the paradox, no?

So what is your opinion? Adopt from the no-kill shelters and support a humane cause? Or adopt from the shelters that destroy pets that don't find homes after a certain period of time to save them from this fate?

Um...Now that you bring it up, I have no idea. confused I suppose in that case, the no-kill shelters are pretty pointless since the whole idea of NOT KILLING gets destroyed, so I'm not sure. I guess it really doesn't matter either way. I agree that it definately is quite sad when a shelter that's supposed to TAKE CARE OF and LOVE the pet has to euthanize it, but they don't really have a choice. sad

I'll just pick shelters in genereal, over paying $600+ on a dog.

Although, most of our pets just showed up:

Two of the cats showed up in our backyard July 5th, 1997. mrgreen
Two of our dogs came from other people.
The other dog came from a shelter. (2 of her siblings died of medical problems sad )
Another cat was found by the dog of my dad's coworker and given to me.
The last kitten was kidnapped and saved from the life of a feral cat.

Then add on the feral cats we care for (Now at 5. I think)

Yea, why go to a shelter when they arrive in your backyard. Definetely my favorite place of adoption. 3nodding

Wow...You're pretty lucky. You have so many pets! That's pretty cool that they just showed up. xd I just got my dog from a breeder cuz we were looking for a smaller dog (we have a small house), and most shelters don't have small dogs. sad We signed up for a waiting list for a small dog from them, though, and they finally called us AFTER we got our dog from the breeder. They had a wittle Shih-Tzu!! I wish we could have gotten him, but we were already REALLY busy with our Cavalier. *hugs him*

Yea, the dog we got from a shelter is.... 100+ pounds? And we have a relatively small house, but we can't say no to the cats. And probably the reason we get so many cats is because we have a greenhouse in our back yard that offers them shelter.

Definitely adopt from a kill shelter. They only make you pay for the operation they give the pet. I adopted my two kittens from a kill shelter, one of my dogs from a kill shelter, two of our kittens from a stray litter, and one of our dogs not actually from a kill shelter but from a local person who had rescued the poor thing from an abusive owner.

well, this is a hard one. i'd probably end up adopting from both. we found pookie(my dog) in a newpaper. we adopted ehr from some lady and when we got her her ribs were sticking out so i think it's good that we did.

Yeah, people selling dogs on newspapers tend to get the dogs from puppy mills. You know what those are? It's really sad...

Can't wait to see them! We have a greenhouse at our school, but we never use it. XD haha. We tried last year in biology, but we didn't water our plants enough (cuz he never let us stare ) and they all died....they're still in there. xp

I'd get an even amount from both non-kill and kill shelters. That way I support the lives being saved as well support the lives being saved (if you just got what I said).
