Yesterday I came face to face with something that has always bothered me in American Society.

My skin is light, though I carry the other traits of my tribe, so I usually don't get a lot of the rude comments about Indians. Its not fair, but then the comments that are said about my people are not fair either.

So I was sitting in the break room yesterday, and I happened to over hear a couple of comments about how minorities cannot be racist because they are discriminated against in the modern society.

I don't get that at all.

Anyone can be racist. It doesn't matter if your ancestors came from Europe, Africa, Asia, or the Americas. People discriminate against their fellow humans based on ethnicity, skin color, language, religion, and culture.

I feel the minorities are more racist than the majority. If a black person, hispanic, or other nationality, is denied something they will claim the people who denied them are being racist. It happens a lot. Many illegals have insurance from the state. How is that right? It is because the white people don't want to piss off the minorities. That is how I feel. There are many other examples also. When my husband was deployed they called chocolate milk, dark milk. Of course someone said that was racist. I really feel the minorities are some of the worst.

This pickled vegetable...

This is a logical fallacy that's always irked the crap out of me. Discrimination is discrimination whether the one doing it is black, white or purple.

I'm almost always bitching about something similar to this on pagan and witchcraft message boards when they start ragging on Christianity. They try to justify their condemnations by saying that (in the past) Christianity has done far worse. When will people learn that you cannot fight discrimination with discrimination?

... could kick your a** !!

The past few days, in my civics class, a half and half girl (ironic, eh? and no, it's not an assumption by me, it's fact.) was complaining about how much she hates white people, and basically screamed for the whole class to hear, "white people are stupid" because our teacher happens to be quite slow. The only thing anyone has said to her so far, was one of the kids next to her saying "hey", because said person is white. But that's it. No referrals, she wasn't yelled at by neither the teacher nor the assistant. None of the other students said anything against it.
And don't even get me started on the term "reverse racism"... >o<

I get angry at several of my cousins because they are biased against white people. They don't have a personal reason for this bias either, just stuff that they hear from other people on the Reservation. I have gotten ahold of a couple of them and pinched their ears about their attitudes and why it seems that the white people get more out of life... Honestly, if my cousins put half as much effort into providing for their families as they do complaining about how they got passed over at work because of the color of their skin, then they wouldn't have anything to complain about. stressed

There is also a very nice African couple in my neighborhood. Before I married my husband, we got along beautifully. When my husband (then a tenant) moved into my house, they started disassociating with me and refused to invite anyone else in the house to come over for dinners anymore. After I got married the wife of the couple informed me that they didn't trust my husband because he was Asian, and that they didn't want to have anything to do with me as long as I was married to him.

I thought WTF?

To this day, if I encounter them about town, they will turn their backs to me or use other methods to ignore my presance if possible. However, since she works as the City Clerk, she has to pay attention to me infront of the desk or she might get fired. Sometimes I have this uncanny urge to just go into City Hall and hang out to harrass her a bit, but I don't. I usually send my husband if there is something we need to take care of with the City.

Its still irritating though, and I have my suspicions that they are the ones who started the rumor around the county that my husband is an illegal alien....

Please! He is here legaly to teach. Since his papers are correctly marked and acceptable with the US Gov, I highly doubt that they will get anywhere with the rumor other than to make my husband feel uncomfortable.

Oh wow... I think if I had to chose a race that I trust most it would be Asians. The entire continent of them. They are practically the ones advancing the world right now, with a few exceptions.

But I do have to say I am bitter towards Mexicans. Yes, Mexicans. Not Latinos. Not Hispanics. I mean one specific group. They are the ones taking most advantage of America. It just irks me that they seem to get everything handed to them even though half of their family is illegal. And I have reason to say this. Our nextdoor neighbors are all Mexicans. They came from Mesico and go back and forth every year. There are approximately six families living in a 4 bedroom house. They lost their house due to a forclosure and are still living there as squattors. They have been there for months, but the bank has not made any move to get them out. The place is trashed. The screens are gone, the doors are left wide open. There is trash all over. I mean beer cans, bottles, plastic trash, et cetera. Their poor horses are walking around in a field with that trash all over. There are holes in the ground from fense posts that are feet deep. Those holes could lame a horse so badly that it would need to be put down. They already had one die on them! And it was their fault! The poor thing tripped on her lead rope and hurt her knee. She swelled so bad that her knee was the size of a soccer ball. I am not exaggerating. Then she got pneumonia and would not stand up. The humane society did nothing! They drug that poor horse in to the woods and shot and burried her there. My brother found the grave... And there have been other incidents where the humane society has done absolutely nothing. I had to go over and break up a fight between the stallion and the gelding because the gelding was tied to a tree! He could have easily been killed if he tripped and fell, breaking his neck... *sighs*

And they way the Mexican men oogle women is disgusting. I feel violated when they look at me... Plus saying "puta" when you walk past does not fly for me...

*shakes head* Gotta love it. But like I said the minority {AKA white people} do not want to piss off the minorities...

Question! Why are white people, white people? Then you have Indo-American, African-American, Asian-American??? Why aren't white people German-American? Or Irish-American? Or, here's an even better one, English-American!? The category ?Caucasion is not on many forms... It's always White... How is that not racist? Huh?

Sorry, ranting here...

That's ridiculous. I don't think I've ever even met someone who distrusted Asian people. I understand that everybody has biases, but to shun somebody because they associate with someone who's race you hate, that's really disgusting behavior.
I really can't understand people who want to be treated with a marginal amount of respect but refuse to give it.

@Aakosir: I understand that your neighbors are jerks, but it's unfair to blame all Mexicans.

When you have a terrible example of a nationality, its hard not to paint the entire nation in the same like or dislike... I have met some very nice Mexican people. Some of them are dear to my heart... Others... well, I guess it would be fair to say that I really wouldn't miss them if they walked off the face of the earth so to speak. But there are good and bad examples in every society. Personally, I hate the word race. It really doesn't adequately define the group in question. There really aren't multiple races of humanity... we are all members of the Human race, and yet we act as if someone whose skin is just a little lighter or darker than ours is another species altogether... Its insaine.

I know redface But it is hard not to assume. I have met a very nice mexican lady that I worked with. She would make the best enchiladas and salsa and these really tough potatoes. They were amazing...

I like learning about cultures, and food.... I love learning about food. Learning about my Husband's culture through food has been interesting.

Its always hard not to assume or paint all with one brush... Usually the negative examples end what hopes of good examples about a particular culture that there are for us to see...

Yea. Food is so neat. I love watching Bizarre Foods.

I have been doing better with my assuming, but I still can't stand being oogled by men. I'm not a piece of meat in the butcher's window. I do not like cultures that treat women like that.

The fact minorities seem to get more opportunities bugs me. It seems like if you give a certain group/s more, you're still setting them apart. It's not tolerance or equality then, but just a failed attempt to be fair.

(rant against Arabs. You can skip it as it really doesn't have to do with the topic) I have to say, as a group, I don't like Arabs, not because of terrorists, but because within our culture they're exceptionally rude! My friend and I, were waiting in line for a coaster at the amusement park, and we were next to go on. We looked away for maybe two seconds, and these two Arab guys were in our seats! I was so mad stressed , though my friend kept telling me not to make a fuss. My mom had an Arab man pinch her cheek too, like she was a little girl or something, but she gave him such a look, he jumped away as if he'd been burned. xd There's also horror stories, like Arab men marrying American women, and if they take you to whatever Middle Eastern country they're from, they have all the rights. They can kill you, take your child, whatever...one man did kill his wife because she admitted to adultery. He had his brother ignite her with gasoline as soon as she stepped off the plane, and there wasn't any trial or anything. Some of them also think all American women are prostitutes (like a certain Saudi Princess's brother), which bugs me to no end. I don't even believe in premarital sex, but just because I'm American they'd think I was fast. I hate the cultural attitude towards women...if any guy ever pinches my cheek like that guy did to my mom, I won't just glare. I'll break his hand.

I guess the point of my whole rant up there is there is good reason not to trust certain people based on ethnicity. If you actually know something of a culture, and avoid people of that race for something you know is common to their culture, that's just being smart, not racist.

I've a a few problems with Middle Eastern lads over the years. I was propositioned by not one, but two while walking to class at university. One even suggested (in broken English, so it took me awhile to catch his drift) that we go back to a hotel, while calling me 'my friend' repeatedly. Apparently they find pale skin and dark hair attractive...and think that NZ European women are loose. After that I started wearing my engagement ring all the time.
I've also run across a middle eastern vet who actually took over an op being done by a female vet because she "wasn't doing it properly". I was the circulating nurse at the time, and she seemed to be doing the routine spey just fine. He also made snide remarks about the nurses who wore pants and tops that weren't long enough (we usually wear tunic tops that come to elbow length, and at least 3/4 black pants).
Having said that, I've had no problem with Middle Eastern women, one of my mates at highschool was from Iran...I hope she's alright everyday.

I can't think of any other ethnic groups I've had trouble with off the top of my head...other than the odd Peruvian lad saying 'muy guapa' suggestively and leering at me while I was over there.

As for the more opportunities thing, that irks me. Here, you can draw part of your far-flung lineage and claim it as your own, even I can (I'm 1/40th New Foundland Inuit apparently), but I feel bad about using it to my advantage, then I see someone who's red-haired, blue eyed, and pale as milk claiming she's Maori and getting into vet school because of that and it just...gah...needless to say, I'm so very, very tempted to play their game.
