Prowling in the grass, Mei-li had her sights set on a butterfly delicately perched on top of a rock. It moved it's wings so slowly, and Mei-li was mesmerized. It was beautiful things in life like this that made her stay away from the imaginary world her father had invented. Though, giant blue bunnies did sound rather fun.

Keeping her green eyes locked on the small insect, she stuck her tongue out of the corner of her mouth as she focused. Building her energy, she made a leap for it, making a small bubble with her body over the rock. Her eyes showed immense excitement, but were quickly disappointed as she looked down to see that the butterfly had fluttered off right before she pounced on it.

"Aww!" Sliding off the side of the rock, she kept her front paws and head draped over it dramatically. She thought for sure that she'd be an amazing hunter, but so far, she'd missed everything she had tried to pounce on. Staring out, she let out a deep sigh, deciding to stay put on the rock until she could gather herself enough to try again.

Ulwazi looked up, mouth agape as a butterfly with shimmering blue wings fluttered over his head. He turned around, watching it flutter away until he lost track of its flight, turned around again and bristled.

There was strange green cub sitting right there on that rock!

She seemed to have spotted him. What should he do? She was looking right at him, should he go say hi? He couldn't just walk away now that she knew he was there. He lowered himself until only the top of his head was visible above the grass and took a few steps toward her, hesitated a momen, popped his head above the grass and stared at her.

He still stared at her. Finally, he said, "Hi."

Flicking her ears up as she heard a voice, Mei had been completely oblivious to the blue cub's approach. Quickly straightening herself up on the rock, she stared at him kind of blankly for a few moments- no one had ever approached her before. Her father had said that with her stunningly bright coat that it was inevitable for her to meet others, but she had no idea what to do in this situation.

"H-hi." Her voice was small and squeaky, and she tilted her head down a little as she spoke, green eyes looking up at him with a sort of meekness. "Were...were you hunting butterflies too?" Squishing her lips together, she wondered if maybe he was better at it than she was. He looked like he was rather skilled at something, if not butterfly hunting, and it frazzled Mei just a little.

Did he say something wrong? Why was she so nervous? Maybe he shouldn't have stared so much. Was that rude? His ears turned back apologetically.

"Do you mean that pretty blue bug?" he asked, oblivious. The world was a confusing place but Ulwazi's mind always managed to make sense of it somehow. "No, I wouldn't hurt it. I thought it looked kind of special because it was so shiny and blue, like my brother and sister, and I wouldn't want to hurt something that looked like them. Are you hungry?"

"Oh..." Mei didn't really want to hurt it either, she just wanted...well, maybe proving to herself that she was a decent hunter really meant hurting the little thing.

"You have siblings?" Her ears perked back up at his words; maybe there were others like him that she could play with. Her own siblings seemed too familiar to be any fun, so even though she wasn't used to talking to strangers, she really liked that this one was here.

"I...not too much." Looking down at her stomach, she rubbed the fuzzy fur that ran across it with her paw. "Are you?" Her tail curled around her as she looked back at him, her eyes wide with curiosity. He had a pretty pelt, even her father would probably agree with that.

"Uh-uh," he shook his head. "Mama gave me breakfast this morning." He thought she must have felt hungry because she was hunting bugs. Mama only hunted when she was hungry, never for fun. Then again he hunted for fun sometimes didn't he? He guessed that was a silly question.

"Yep, I have a brother and a sister! My sister's called Theluli and my brother is Izulu'e... e... lemony... am... uh... well, I can never remember the rest, it's kind of long, so I just call him Zulu. My name's Ulwazi but everybody calls me Wazi. What's your name?"

"You can't remember his name?" A little bewildered, Mei found it quite odd. Though, no one in her family had very long names, and that's just how she liked it. "I have six siblings, but there names are kinda short." Pawing at the rock, she tried to focus a little more on it to calm her nerves.

"I'm Mei-li." Smiling sheepishly at him, her father had named her. It was a tradition in his family to have names like this, so half the litter got this kind of name. "Waaaazi." Opening her mouth really big as she said his name, it made her giggle a little. "Wazi." Pinching her lips together in a tiny smile, she looked back at him, to see if he was laughing with her.

"Oh, oh! You can call me Mei." Jumping up a little, she put most of her body onto the rock now, feeling all the lumps in it on her stomach.

"Waaaaazi!" He laughed, curling his tail. "That's funny! Waaaaazi, hehe!"

Feeling adventurous, Ulwazi hopped on top of the rock beside Mei and surveyed his surroundings with a smile. He could see much more of the savannah from up here than when he was down in the grass. He sat down and looked at Mei. "What's it like having six brothers and sisters?"

Giggling at him, Mei's eyes seemed to glow a little. He was fun after all!

"Um..." Looking down at her paws, she shuffled around a little on the rock. "It can fun, sometimes, but Yuyu gets distracted a lot, so he doesn't always have time for all of us." Wiggling her nose, she thought about her father for a moment- Yuyu was what he wanted to be called, since he seemed to hate anything that portrayed that he was a father. Yuyu was easier for Mei to say, at least. "But I love all of them." Grinning at him, she stretched out her paws, starting to count on them. "There's Baskhara, Akribos, Arianwyn, Lin, and Huan Ming. And then Mei!" Rolling onto her back, she stuck her paws straight up, looking at the blue sky between her paws. "I guess that's only five siblings. Whoopsies, Mei miscounted." Sticking her tongue out, she winked at him, a little embarrassed by her own mistake.

"What are you doing out here, Waaaazi?" She smiled at him, hoping that he came out all this way just to see her, as impossible as it sounded.

Wazi’s eyes went wide. Woah, that was a lot of names! He didn’t think he could remember them all if he had that many brothers and sisters. Mei must be really smart. He smiled down at her and playfully batted at her paws. “Exploring! Do you want to explore with me, Mei?”

His tail bristled with excitement. Exploring was Wazi’s favorite thing to do besides making friends. He got to learn so much about the world by exploring and learning new things was Wazi’s second favorite activity, because he didn’t always have to learn new things to be an explorer. Meeting new people was part of being an explorer, too.

Grinning at his reaction, Mei-li jumped up on her paws. "Exploring? That sounds like fun!" Her green eyes sparkled with a mixture of excitement and happiness, with her tail swaying slowly behind her. She had never explored with someone else before- usually, she just went off on her own. That way, she could do whatever she wanted, and not have anyone else to worry about. It got a little lonely, though....

"Let's go, then!" Stepping off to her right, she kept her eyes on Ulwazi, a small grin locked on her maw. She didn't really know what to expect, but she knew that with this new friend, it had to be fun, no matter what.

Ulwazi grinned and leapt to her side. Girls and boys were very much the same for him at this age. Having no father and being an open minded cub, he never thought to judge Mei-li by her gender. Some male cubs his age might have cringed at the thought of playing with a girl. As far as Ulwazi was concerned, playing with Mei-li was no different than playing with his brother. So with great enthusiasm he followed her through the tall grass in search of afternoon adventure.
