Lana..... Lana was truly alone. Her siblings did very little to enteract with her, and she with them. It was better to be alone. That's what she gathered from her mother and quite a few of the females in her pride. The men were ruling things and she wasn't sure how she felt about that. At least, she thinks they're ruling things. Lana didn't get caught up in pride politics, because it always made her head hurt.

All Lana knew whas that she hadn't met a boy yet, and she was hoping that she would. And wouldn't. It was a very confusing thing. Her purple eyes squinted in the sun as she walked through the pride, glad it was setting fairly slowly. It was her favorite time of day.

Grendel was finally starting to come out of his shell. He didn’t even realize he was in a shell until he stepped out into the pride. It took some time, but he finally figured out how to interact with other lions without his father watching over him. He didn’t care that the females seemed to hate him no matter what he did, for he had no intention of pleasing them. Even though the pride was full of females of cub-baring age, Grendel was choosey. Both his mother and Lulu had produced cubs with the sacred scorpion marking. He wanted to make absolutely certain that his chosen mate would pass down his marking. If she couldn’t give him scorpioned children, she was no good to him at all.

Lana could care less about passing on markings, or anything like that. No, she wanted... a friend. Maybe not a best friend, but some kind of friend. Someone she can talk too. She knew she was shelted, in her own little world of her mind. The pride was full of others, but how would they reguard a female who had absolutely no interest in mating, having cubs and keeping her blood line alive? What the little flower marked girl wanted to do was .....well, she didn't know. Maybe to explore the pride. Maybe that would bring her out of her shell. She sighed at her own thoughts and shook her head, tail flicking as she sat upon a large rock that she happened to find.

Grendel almost walked right past her. Her natural colors blended in well with the environment so that he almost mistook her for a tree stump. Besides, she was too young to be of any real interest to him, though he could see that she would soon be of breeding age. He couldn’t help but think that she would be very beautiful when she was older.

When someone walked past her, the brown female gave a start and then blinked. She recognized him; seen him around the pride, heard his name a few times. "You.... You're.. Grendel?" She asked, her voice not as weak as she thought it would be. Stopping others and talking to them... Was not Lana's strong suit. But, she had to change if she wanted friends, didn't she? Could he be a possible friend? A male? Lana wouldn't let her mother's prejudice stop her, as much as she wanted too. Give everyone a fair chance; they'd have to do it with her, too. She believed.

Hearing his name, Grendel stopped and smiled at her. He knew some of the females were talking about him. “Yes. How did you hear about me?”

He wasn’t sure what kind of gossip the females were spreading about him, but it was certainly spreading. Father always said females were dangerous in large numbers. They simply talked too much. He imagined they said the same things about him that they did his father: he was frightening (he hoped they said that), eccentric, cold, hard and unpleasant. How strange that this little girl would want to talk to him.

"I just.. I've... seen you around.... And I've heard some call your name. Your father's.... Soro? He had the newest litter in the pride?" She hoped she got her information right. News spread quickly amongst the females, but it wasn't always accurate. She didn't want to leave some kind of bad impression on the male. Honestly, she didn't know what the others were saying about him, and could care less, because bad gossip was just that; bad gossip. Why females in general felt the need to indulge in such things were beyond her. "Forgive me... I'm Svetlana... Most... call me Lana.."

She seemed to know her place.

“That’s right. We had five cubs.” He puffed out his chest, quite proud of the family his father was making. To Lana it might have seemed strange that Grendel used ‘we’ when he was speaking about his father, but this little mistake slipped right by Grendel. He simply adored his father and wanted to share in his accomplishments.

He walked over and stood beside the rock where she was sitting, looking her over. From here the white scorpion on his nose was easily visible. “I’ve never seen you around here before. Have you been hiding?” He knew that some of the Amazons tried to keep their female cubs away from the males. Why they did this was something he could never understand. He supposed they were just insolent.

Her ears flicked at that, not sure what to make of it. Once more, she didn't get involved in politics. "I... I don't know about that... I mean, about anything related to the queen... I don't... pay attention to politics.. Conflict involved," came her near mumbled reply as she cast her eyes down again. She did know that this pride used to be full of warriors. Her mother had told her that, and so did a few of the females who came to visit from time to time. Flicking her mane out of her eyes again, Lana looked to Grendel and bit down on her bottom lip. He hadn't answered her question, but he didn't have too. She wouldn't bring it up again, either. "Uhm... Soro, your father... and the new cubs... It must be a little crowded?" Way to bring out her inability to socialize.

Grendel smiled to show his approval. It was better she stay out of politics, she was too young to understand and the females in this pride would surely try to corrupt her young mind if she became involved. "Yes, it does get a little crowded, but I like it that way." What could be better than sleeping in a big pile with his whole family?

"I like you, Lana. You know your place better than any other female in this pride. What you really need is a mate." He was starting to consider taking her as his own. She was too young to do him any good right now, but Soro had chosen Lulu at a young age too. He could simply keep her until she was of breeding age and then use her to create heirs of his own. Of course he would have to consult his father about it first. Grendel never did anything without talking to his father.

A...mate? She wasn't even thinking that far ahead. Svetlana had heard her sisters being paired off already, but she didn't think she was ready. But, it seemed it wasn't up to the female anymore. The males took charge in such affairs and if she was good, she would go along and not get injured majorly in the process. That is what she was truly terrified of, being beaten into submission. But, how could Grendel possibly beat someone who was already so submissive? She flicked her tail in thought and rolled her shoulders in an unsure shrug. "Maybe so... I-I've... I've never... thought of it," she said honestly, looking him in the eyes directly for not the first time in their meeting.

What would her mother think? She didn't even know how her mother would react.

“I would take good care of you. You would be my beautiful little flower, safe in our den with our cubs.” Grendel’s red eyes gleamed like rubies in the sun. As he spoke he sat down beside her and stroked her with his front paw, starting at the back of her head and going down her back, the tips of his claws combing her soft fur and pricking her flesh.

Yet something about that flower on her shoulder bothered him. The marking was so prominent that it might over-power his scorpion marking. When he had cubs, he wanted them to have scorpions that stood out. Even though the marking looked good on her, he wouldn’t want it to show up on any of his sons. It was no matter. If she displeased him, he would simply kill her. Grendel needed a skull to match the one his father wore, and she had such a pretty face.

She swallowed thickly at the feeling of those claws parting her fur and running on the tender flesh under it. Lana's muscles gave a quiver against her will and she turned her head from him, so he wouldn't see the stain that seeped through her fur, making it more red in her face, than brown. So her first encounter with a male had turned into a mate offer. She felt taken advantage of, because she felt he just knew she couldn't refuse. Fighting wasn't in her blood. But the prospect of being able to hide in a den the rest of her life, if she lived that long, was a welcomed one. Social anxiety made her want to hide more and more every day. A nagging part in her head told her this is exactly why her mother hid her away.

"If.... it is... I mean.." What to say to that? She slowly moved away from his petting and backed towards the direction she had came, away from him, but finally looking at him. "If... that is what... you wish? I've t-to go.. M-mother will be looking for me soon." It wasn't a lie; her mother was very protective of her, so missing from the den this long would prove troublesome int he long run.

The pleasure in Grendel's eyes quickly turned to anger. Fortunately for Lana, she slunk out from under his paw slowly rather than jerk away, for if she had tried to escape in a hurry he surely would have punished her. As she lifted her head his tail thumped on the ground. For her to desire to leave in such a hurry was extremely disappointing. He might have taken it out on her, but he knew he would have to speak to his father first before he chose a mate so he supposed he could let her go for now.

He stood and went to her side. "Then you should let me walk you home. I wouldn't want you to get hurt along the way." The threat was subtle, but clear. If she wanted to leave now he wasn't going to let her go without finding out where in the pride she lived.

It was crystal clear; much like the sky on a cloudless day. She nodded and actually gave him a tiny, grateful smile. In a way, the shy, socially awkward female was flattered he would take such interest in her. The other part of her, however, knew he could, and probably would, be a very violent male or a violent mate. "That.... that is just.. what I was going to ask." Lana prayed this appeased him before... actually brushing up against him subtly, the way she'd seen other females do to their bond mates. Apparently it was considered flirting. "T-thank you, Grendel..."

Grendel smiled as she brushed up against him. If his father saw how meek and obedient Lana was, he felt certain he would approve. However, Grendel was still considered about that marking on her side. There was also the matter of her age. Maybe she wasn’t the best choice for him. Still, it was good to have options, and if she displeased him he would simply try again with a different female. There were plenty of other eligible lionesses in his pride. It might be worth his time to beat one of the more reluctant Amazons into submission.

“That’s a good girl,” he cooed.
