If I'm not mistaken, I think it's a symbol of ultimate knowledge.

Might be a representation of the fall of man, which is usually symbolized with a strange fruit or weird apple of some kind.

Name three separate religions that mention a Golden Apple... No picking religions that could have obviously put the myth in a transition, ie, Christianity has the Ten Commandments because it derived from Judaism.

I'm partial to the Havamal when Odhin speaks of his sacrificing himself unto himself and hanging from a branch of the world tree and at the end of 8 days, wins the wisdom of the runes. also, on topic, It's also interesting to note that with the norse "Golden apples of Idunn" they don't necessarily grant wisdom but youth and vitality, but they are still forbidden for mankind to eat.

If you had ultimately knowledge and wisdom, wouldn't you be able to have vitality and youth?

Norse: The golden apples of Idun Sumerian: The Hercules/Heracles myth has a lot of similarities with the Gilgamesh epic, including a part dealing with apples/fruit (depends on what translation you read). Also, the entire creation story in the biblical Genesis is almost directly lifted from the Sumerian creation myths, including the E.DIN and "tree of knowledge".

Obscurus If you had ultimately knowledge and wisdom, wouldn't you be able to have vitality and youth? With age comes wisdom. also, Intelligence/knowledge and wisdom are not the same thing. Wisdom is more of an awareness and logic sort of thing. This is why a person can be intelligent and have no common sense whatsoever, and vice versa. also, in nordic tradition, Odhin "gave an eye for a drink of meade (to "see" better), and was granted wisdom supreme". so in that case, wisdom is not granted by the apples.

You would still have ultimate knowledge and you can have vitality with age. It really just depends on what one means by "youth". Do they mean physical youth or total youth (which might result in the loss of wisdom)?
