The scene is a muddy bamboo field with about an inch of standing water the outside of the mud is coated in thick grass and beyond that is a bamboo forrest. A light rain is falling and the bamboo is rustling as hiroko awaits his trainer, staring at the lone outcropping in the bamboo, a dark tunnel that goes out for a mile. The ring is ninety feet by 110 feet with the mud on the side opposite the enterence.

Hiroko waited timidly for his squads vice captain to arrive. His thoughts ranged over many reasons as to why he had been called here to fight, but none of them were right. "She is going to fight me because I havn't been traing. My sword is going to snap in half on the first blow." He silently paced back and forth as he awaited his superior, creating more and more far fetched reasons for his presence.

"Ugh, this sucks," Hinata said as she trooped through a good inch of soggy grass and mud on her way to the bamboo field - wishing that she had not chosen that particular location. How on Earth was she supposed to have known that it was going to rain? Usually, the secluded forest was perfect for a bout of sparring, with little outside distractions... except if a torrential storm had swept by the night before.

Picking her way through the bamboo stalks, she finally emerged into a clearing, in which her trainee was nervously awaiting her arrival. She waved a hand, changing direction to greet him.

"Hi there, Hiroko-san!” the Vice-Captain said, trying not to sink her sandal into ten centimetres of mud. “You received the message, I see. You must be wondering why I called you here. The reason is simple. I’ve seen your skills, and do believe you’re ready to learn the name of your Zanpaktou. However, you haven’t yet been pushed to a limit that you are forced to use it. That’s my job.”

Stopping to face Hiroko, she gave a rather sardonic grin. “You up for it?”

Hiroko's eyes widened, 'She's seen my skills ... rats, she must have been spying on me that one time. Or perhaps the academy files ... ugh ...' Realizing that he was still in the company of his fukutaicho he stiffened up into an overglorified attention saying, "I'm not much of a fighter ma'fukutaicho, but I can try."

Realizing now that he probably looked like a dumb a**, considering how lax Hinata had been on the last occasion they met, Hiroko relaxed a little and removed the stick from his side, the wood splintered away to reveal a thin, segmented, rapier of sorts covered in runes. Indeed his unreleased sword was as odd and peculiar as the man who held it.

"Haha, you're too modest." Hinata grinned, then, wasting no time, dashed towards Hiroko in a blur - simultaneously unsheathing her Zanpaktou. A flash of metal was seen as the blade whipped through the air to Hiroko's left side. This was followed by a spinning kick at his neck, and a vicious diagonal cut at his back. Not waiting to see if her attacks had hit, she flash-stepped back to her original place, skidding a little in the wet mud.

"Well, come at me, then," she baited, apparently relaxed about the situation. Hiroko really needed some more self-confidence if he was going to attain Shikai in training. Only then would he be able to focus his whole strength into the battle.

They hit, one after the next as she disappeared and the next thing he knew he was on the ground, bleeding from his side and neck. 'I ... don't want to fight you.' He pushed himself up again. Hiroko debated using kido, but his fukutaicho would most likely just brush them off like flies. He looked down at his now soiled robes, 'Great. Now I need to wash these again.'

He continue to glance between Hinata and his sword, fighting his inner conflict as he did, but giving no words on his thoughts. He didn't even respond to her taunts. 'Maybe if I don't attack her she'll give up.'

"Stalling isn't going to help," Hinata taunted Hiroko's hesitation, and gathered reiryoku at the tip of her blade. Slashing it in an arc through the air, a wave of green-white energy was released, on soaring towards Hiroko. "Fight back, or be incinerated. You know-"

She used a flash step to land beside Hiroko, sword pointed inches away from his neck.

"- if I were your Zanpaktou, would I really want to work for a master who didn't at least try?"

Hiroko turned his head as Hinata appeared beside him again, the blow to the back of his head must have cut his mask, because as he turn it fell to the mud. The mouthful of pirana-like teeth looked up at the vice captain of squad thirteen. 'She's egging me on. She wants this, she wants to see me become a monster.' He spoke again, "So it is, and so it must be, let the student die, and let the monster rise." His demeanor had taken a sudden change as he remembered the life life he had lived oh so long ago.

"Fine." He thrusted his swords hilt towards Hinata's gut attempting to grapple her leg with his free hand. "Just remember that you asked for this." If he could grapple her he would put his teeth to good use. This fight would be bloody.

Hinata thought she had seen everything when it came to demon transformations. She had almost been torn apart by a lycan, had her blood sucked out of her by her Captain's Shikai. However, the sudden change in Hiroko's aura was downright creepy, to say the least. When he turned, baring rows of vicious-looking teeth, her eyebrows shot up so high that they were in danger of disappearing into her flyaway fringe. She was not trying to be rude- only a Shinigami with a set of shark teeth was definitely not something you saw every day.

Instinctively jamming her palm into his sword hilt's path to protect her stomach, the Vice-Captain twisted out of Hiroko's vice-like grip on her leg. Using the momentum, she spun to his side, aiming a kick to sweep him off his feet and a subsequent jab at his neck, before leaping up and bombarding him with a complicated series of hacks and slashes.

Suddenly Hiroko was lying prone as a series of attacks assaulted his stomach and chest. He tried to get up, using his sword as a cane to no avail as it wobbled and eventually bent from the pressure. He looked at the bow bent curve in his blade as he stood and sighed. It was useless now, the blade was only good for slashing and hooking people now, but nonetheless he staggered towards Hinata and poured his strength into a single slash towards her midsection, it was slow and heavy, but it held all the strength he could gather as he felt the wounds on his stomach tear open deeper with a sharp pain in his gut.

"Oh, dear." This was all Hinata had time to say, as she hurried to block Hiroko's slash with her blade. However, the attack had been stronger than she had counted on, and soon the two Zanpaktou were grinding against each other with a shrill, metallic screeching noise, generating sparks as they went. As she bent to twist her sword from underneath Hiroko's, she saw the horrific wound she herself had inflicted on his stomach, and blood that was not hers peppered her face and arms. Just when she had freed her Zanpaktou, his slipped - a flash of metal was all she saw as it sheared off a good two inches of her left pigtail.

"My hair!" Annoyed, the girl lashed out - not with her blade, this time, but with the hilt of her Zanpaktou, and struck Hiroko at the base of his skull, rendering him immediately unconscious.

(Fun part starts now)

User Image

Hiroko felt a sudden blow to the back of his head as he fell into the mud face first and lost consciousness.

When he awoke he was on a metal platform overlooking a waterfall of pure chrome. The platform appeared to be anchored to the moon itself as he stared at it against the dark blue sky.

The air here was frigid, yet occasionally it became hot, muggy, frigid, dry ... 'This is odd.'

He found what may have been the answer, the scene below the platform kept changing from a forrest, to a waterfall, to a jungle, to a hillside, to a swamp, to an ocean, to a volcano, to the Arctic, essentially it changed on a whim to whatever it so desire, between each scen it melted before the next appeared.

Hinata sat patiently, pulled out her other hairpin and stuck her Zanpaktou vertically into the ground before her. Before she began meditating, she glanced once more at Hiroko's still figure - he jerked suddenly, as if surprised.

Heh. Well, it's not like I wasn't surprised either.

Closing her eyes, she transported her consciousness into her own Zanpaktou's world.

Hiroko stared for some time before the sound of clanking metal appeared behind him and he was suddenly knocked off of the platform. As he fell he stared up into the sky, watching as some kind of metal, skeletal, spider-man fell behind him. It flattened its body and rushed him, grabbing Hiroko as they sped towards the ground and crashed.

They had landed in the arctic setting. The chilled metal burning Hiroko's skin as he layed there on his back with the skeletal beast pinning him down. The mech said nothing as Hiroko stared up at it, but it suddenly let go and walked off a ways. This must be his zanpakuto spirit, he had read about other's experiences in the inner sanctums of the zanpakuto realms while reading in the squad thirteen library, but this seemed to span on forever. Hiroko knew that learning the zanpakuto's name would let him escape, but what if this mechanical beast didn't speak?

Hiroko stood as he awaited something, anything that wasn't complete and utter silence. Nothing came forth but that odd silence. The spirit didn't even look at Hiroko, choosing instead to admire the scenery.

(((Sorry, I was just unmotivated for a while.)))

The words finally came. Powerful like thunder, but as soft as the summer breeze. "You bent me. You hid me away, you denied me, then you bent me, yet you now desire my power? I refuse to be wielded by such a pathetic excuse of a man."

All he said was true. Hiroko didn't like fighting anymore, something within him told him that it was wrong.

"Oi, idiot." The voice, crystal clear as the peal of a bell, echoed through the deserted landscape. Hinata didn't open her eyes, instead choosing to focus on the fresh night air, the rush of a breeze carrying mist past her, and the faint tinkle of chimes disturbed by the wind.

"Please stop pretending to be tranquil and sophisticated. It's so unlike you," the emotionless voice remarked again. Sighing, the Vice-Captain lifted her gaze to her Zanpaktou spirit, who as always, had her back turned, as if not interested in her Shinigami in the least. Harikaze’s silhouette stood out in perfect contrast with the vast, silver-white moon sitting on the horizon beyond her. “What is it you want now?”

“For your information,” Hinata replied resignedly, “I came here out of pure enjoyment, not to beg something out of you.”

“What happened to your hair?” Harikaze said in a tone of great amusement, half-turning to inspect her choppy hairstyle.

“The Hiroko kid lopped some of it off,” Hinata replied with a hint of annoyance.

“-Then maybe I should do the other side to match.” Abruptly, and with a speed Hinata could only match by flash-step, Harikaze brought a katana down – seemingly out of nowhere – and lashed out at the right side of Hinata’s head. The sword whistled through the air, and was met with a metallic shriek of steel on steel, as sparks flew and fizzled out into the endless night.

“I didn’t come here to pick a fight, Harikaze,” warned the Shinigami.

“Oh, but you knew that it was coming. Why delay the inevitable?”

“Why indeed.” And with this, she launched into a retaliation.
