There's not much to teach, really =3

It's mainly just about recolouring and shaping a sprite that already exists.

Unless you can make them from scratch, in which case, you should be giving me lessons.

>.>

Here, I'll talk you through how I made the one at the top of my post.

I started with the Parasol Lady sprite.

User Image

First, you remove the parts you don't wish to include from the original sprite one by one. The only thing I didn't want from this sprite was the parasol, so I removed it.

User Image

After that, the overall base needs to be altered to the position you want it. For example, my sprite now has her hand in mid-air for no reason and has short hair; wiping out the forearm, I continued the lines from her shoulder (with the same outline colour) and extended her hair length, filling in the blank with the main shade of hair colour to better see the sprite as a whole. I also coloured over the exposed ear, as my avatar has doll ears (which would be added at a later time). Next, I added a flower in the closed right hand. When you are adding new elements to a sprite, the process is very much trial-and-error; it might take several tries before you get it right, or you might find drawing a general shape and then defining it bit by bit to be easier. Finally, I altered the sprite's skin tone to reflect my own. Sometimes, the way to do this can be to create a temporary colour chart at the side of the picture by selecting each existing colour and making a type of gradient reference. Here, I took the girl's general skin tone - by which I mean the colour most used, which is the peachy clour covering most of her arms and legs - and the pinkish colours used for shadows and outlines. Then, I picked the general colour I wanted to replace hers with - the light olive tone - and created a gradient next to the original one with an alternative to each colour. Each pixel that was a certain colour, I would simply then replace it with my alternatives to create a simple recolouring without losing the original effect.

User Image

I filled in the colour on her newly drawn arm, edited the flower in her hand and added a few rogue leaves floating around her. After that, I filled in the main area of her dress with a general pink colour to help me visualize the final effect, removing the drab brown shadows of the original as I did so, and changed her eyes to include a pink tint by choosing a hot pink colour and adding a single pixel of it at the bottom of her original pupil.

User Image

For the next part, if I am working from an example, I sometimes find it useful to copy and paste a sample of the subject next to the sprite so I can refer to it and use it to colour-match. Both this and any colour charts you might have made can be removed later on. Here, I collected the colours from areas of my avatar's clothes and filled in that of the sprite's, defining the ruffles with a darker pink and highlighting the areas that would be in the light. Using the same shades, I recoloured the top sections of the boots pink and spotted them with white to recreate my legwarmers and coloured the bottom sections white with a grey outline to define them. I also changed her hair to match that of my avatar and extended the shadow beyond her shoulder. Because I felt like it, I also added coloured dots floating around her that matched the colours of the flower to give the effect of pollen.

User Image

From then it, it was all about simply perfecting the details and matching the colours. I blended in the shades and added white and pink dots to the dress to create the illusion of sparkles; I find the most effective way to do this is to use white dots on the lightest area and then use the colour from that area to dot the next, creating a believable gradient of sparkle as opposed to simply white spots. This is because white usually contrasts too much on darker shades and won't look realistic. When creating something with a rough texture, the spots can be closer together and mixed with different shades and colours for better effect. Another thing I like to do is even out the eyes of the sprite, but this is simply personal preference. I don't like the fact that most of them have wonky eyes! In this case, I just extended the left eye by one pixel at the top to level it with the other. If you compare it with the one above, you'll notice the difference. Additionally, change any other facial features you want at this point, such as beards or expression. By removing the very bottom pixel of the sprites mouth, I could turn her open smile into a serious frown.

User Image

Finally, I added the doll ears. It took me quite a long time to get them into the position I wanted them, so I left it until after I'd finished everything else.

User Image

She's finished! For a finale, recolour and retouch any minute details you might want to. I changed the orange daisy to a pink rose and its pollen to pink and silver.

User Image

Tips: Always save your sprites as often as you can, and don't save over the same file if you can avoid it. What you might like at one point you might not at another, and it may be too late then to return to a previous stage. Also, never save a sprite in a PNG. format; it discolours the image. The example below is an example of when I forgot this and saved my sprite after two hours of editing. Notice the saturated colours and diluted outline. Bad idea.

User Image

I hope that helps you! =)

Aigoo. I was wondering how people make some trainer sprites.
I'll prolly try this after I get home from buying uniforms for school later ~ D;
I'm A kid who's really bad with art and stuff. T^T
They always appreciate my older brother cause His drawings are really pretty. T^T
And I feel so useless cause I can't draw -- or write properly. T^T

Here are, in my opinion, the two best sprites I have ever made. My strategy, Copy, Paste, Cut, Erase, Recolor, Repeat.

I dislike the arms on the second sprite, the one with wings.
