So, what's your opinion on the rainbow being the symbol for the LGBT community?
Some friends and I were discussing it and I got a wide range of opinions about it, and I heard everything from "Yeah, cool, whatever." to "It's actually a really good symbol (long rant about symbolism)" to "It's demeaning and really annoys me."
I want to hear what the people here have to say about it, and I especially like hearing their reasons behind their opinons.

I think a Rainbow is great, because those colors are the "everything" of the world, and everyone should be able to accept it, and everyone can be gay.
(It sounded better in my head.)

I love the rainbow because I think it's something that can be all inclusive.

(I did not give my opinion in the original post in to avoid swaying anyone.)
I like it because it includes all members of the LGBT community. I was thinking that the different colors show that we're not all the same (both as everyone else and each other). Some people think that all gay men act very feminine, all gay women dress like men, all bisexuals are whores, etc. so I think that the different colors show that some may fit the stereotypes, but we are all different individuals.
Reading over that, I think I may have went too deep into it lol, but there's my thoughts for you all

I actually sort of dislike it because I have straight guy friends that love rainbows who are called Gay (and when you are straight its offensive) simply because the rainbow symbolizes the LGBT comunity. People will always misinterprite the symbolism anyway.

It's a symbol. Anyone would like a gay symbol would be considered gay, regardless of the symbol. So idk whats the issue is with it being a rainbow.

It may have originated with the hanky code, which is not as happy-flowery as some of these other interpretations of the rainbow have been. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handkerchief_codePersonally, I find that it has become just another symbol to market, kind of like peace and anarchy. I find it interesting that the bisexual pride colors (pink, purple, blue) haven't been quite as exploited.

I like the rainbow symbol, even though I never wear it (Except for Pride and the DOS). I think that it originated from the hippie age, when anything went and rainbow was the rage.

I personally like the rainbow as a symbol. I love the idea of all the colors coming together into one beautiful thing and it's basically like all the different people with different views and different ideas coming together to create the world as we see it. Coming together, whether you're a part of the GLBT community or straight, and actually getting along is quite a beautiful thing.

I don't like it, but I just don't like rainbows in general. As a symbol... I don't care. I'm in the whatever camp.

I like Rainbows themselves but as a symbol it's annoying but then again it does help detect fellow homosexuals etc.

But that's just from my experience. Anyways, I think the rainbow is perfect. I love it. Don't have a reason, I just love it =)

I'm kind of late, but I have an analogy of sorts.
The commonly used and most well known version of the peace sign is a circled crows foot - ☮.
Although this is used as a symbol for peace, it actually is an upside-down broken cross, used to symbolize a broken christian. This was first used by Nero when persecuting and killing Christians.
Rainbows are used to show many things, but they're also the symbol of the LGBT community, and this causes some negative connotations with the LGBT community, and arguments within it.
I don't like the Peace sign for the same reason I don't like the rainbow as the symbol of our community. I can see how it fits, but I see what people mean when they say it's demeaning.

(Since somebody reopened this thread i'm posting.
I love it!!! Yes, although people do give me dirty looks. "but with wearing the rainbow attire comes with having the courage to take the dirty looks and smile and continue with your day."
