I know that certain stones are used in a number of spells, so I have a few questions.

1) What's a good price range for stones like quartz, agate, turquoise and other stones that are commonly used? There's a store downtown that sells crystals, but I have a feeling they'll be overpriced there. So I'd just like to know a general price range so I can have a good idea of what I should be paying vs. what they want for it, so if it's too much I'll look elsewhere.

2) What kind of crystals do you use and find most effective, if any? I know they're all supposed to have different properties, but I'm just curious which ones people like best and get the most use out of.

It depends on the size of the crystal.
Small ones that fit in your palm should range between 50C to 1$ (US currency)
Larger ones do cost more.

I wouldn't buy any of those "blessed" or already worked on stones if the price is doubled. If its the same then it wouldn't be a problem. In another words don't fall for any "Fancy" wording.

As for what stones I use- mainly crystal quartz, rose quartz, and emerald.
my BOS has a yellow saphire stone in it. My altar has a crystal quartz on the goddess side and smoky on the god side.

Hmm, it sounds like most of the shops I checked out had the stones overpriced, then. I'll keep looking around to see if I can find something more reasonable.
Yeah, quartz is what I'm mainly looking for, and amethyst, citrine and sapphire would be nice too (though those will be more expensive I'm sure). I have some peridot jewelry since it's my birthstone, so I may be able to use that too. I used to have a lot of crystals when I was younger, but I have no idea where they are now, I wish I had kept some.
Thanks for your help!

Amethyst is a type of quartz stone actually. Citrine and Amethyst are very common stones and will be around the same price as the quartz stones will be. Turquois stones will range from about the same as quartz to moderately more than. Sapphire will be a lot more expensive though. Like CilverCyanide said the price for stones is dependent on size mostly. They do tend to range from around .50 cents to a couple of dollars for small polished pieces and little spear shaped wand like ones. Though the spheres will tend to cost you around $20-60. There are also geodes that cost more as well.

On my altar there is a quartz geode and an amethyst one. I also use hematite, fluorite, kyanite and calcite on a regular basis.

Thanks for your help. I figured sapphire would be most expensive, but I wasn't sure about amethyst or citrine though, so I'm glad I can get ahold of those. I found a few reasonably priced pendants recently (rose quartz, tiger-eye, and some others I can't remember now) so I might buy a couple of those once I get paid.

if you go to certain shops, then you can get really good prices. if you ever go to monterey, they have a really good shop that sells some really nice stones for very low prices. also, small shops near state parks also have some pretty good prices. i usually use either quartz or amethyst in rituals.

Monterey in California, where the aquarium is? I've been there before! I went into a few gift shops while I was there, I wonder if I ever went into that one. Although that was a couple of years ago, so I guess it would be hard to say now. XD
Gift stores at state parks do sound like a really good place to get stones, I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks for your help!

I've gotten a lot of good stones online, through Ebay sometimes. I got a handful of uncut citrine pieces for around 5 dollars and i got a cut sapphire for less than that. I actually wanted an uncut gem but they sent me a cut one by mistake.

Wow, you got a cut sapphire for less than $5? That's a steal. Hmm, maybe I should finally get around to getting an ebay account. Do you have a link to the seller's page, by chance?

I use stones occasionally in my work. But really, if I use stones it's for ritual jewelry of some kind. I make bracelets, Komboloi for myself, necklaces, anklets, earrings, pendants, ect. I usually work on commission for certain pieces but I make some to sell, too.

But occasionally when I come across a nice branch or a nice quartz point, I'll make some wands to sell along side my jewelry. The last wand I made was for a dear friend in college. Haven't made one in over.... six months? yeah. That. xD

Ah, nice! I like making jewelry too.
A wand would be fantastic, I would really like to make one sometime, once I find the right wood for it. I have a book that talks about making and decorating them, but never actually gives instructions. How do you attach stones to the end of the wand? I was thinking of using hot glue and then maybe tying it in place, but I'm wondering if there might be a better way.

Well, you can do it a number of ways. If you have the skill you can wire wrap the end stone to the body of the wand. If you have the tools you can drill/file a hole in the tip and put the point there. You can glue it, and then hide the glue with wire.

Personally, I like to use polymer clay to attach the stones. You can make awesome designs in the clay around the crystal, and then set the wood in the oven on 275 for 15 to 30 minutes for the clay to harden. The only tricky part is making sure the wood is properly dried before popping it in the oven, because if it isn't, the moister in the wood can cause the clay to bubble and crack. sweatdrop

I assume one could also use air drying clay, but I'm not sure how effective it is. I've never used it. xD
